Bio

I am an old roleplayer from the days of Dial-up where everyone went home to roleplay anime adventures after watching their afternoon toonami run, and probably older than that. I started around the late 90s distinctively because I recall playing Final Doom and Metal Gear Solid while trolling Compuserve chat rooms and roleplaying so maybe a year before 99 or 98 generously? Speaking of Compuserve.

After the amount of FUN I had in AOL I switched ISPs because AOL sucked in terms of service. I got to taste blood in PVP beyond the scope of what I already obtained in AOL.. my own blood. I saw the contrast between different fighting styles and fell in love with such an idea of an infinite universe of roleplay fighting, but not before my bewildering OTK. AOL had its great fighting talent, but Compuserve's original Zones pvp was a different beast entirely. There was no rhyme or reason. There was only fighting and permanent (almost) killing. People spent days researching frivolous AskJeeve science articles, obscure words, not-established supernatural theories, actual unproven theories, and overall cheapness to kill other players. I changed. I went from barely spelling to spelling decently. I vested time in the ability to put my wit against the locals on a daily basis and the excitement of dueling, raids, or simple death matches.

Then I forgot there was an entire universe, and fell in love all over again. I lost internet but gained determination. I'd discover free-form roleplaying on RPGchat back in 2003 and changed once again. I was introduced to a more laid back but sensible scale of power-efficiency. These people were more concerned about player positioning and simplicity than abstract and absurd metaphysics, and though Compuserve's meta had remain true to function it didn't offer the tone to level down a bit to something comprehensible. Scale the pointless and streamline your idea. The universe was a big place for me and I think that excited me more. My ambition for battle and war matched now a bigger scale and I would fight randoms all over to just prepare for it. RPGchat was good for one specific thing and that's style in writing. Forum based roleplaying focused specifically on how well you actually wrote circa 2004 and up, and my propensity for verbosity had to adjust. Transitioning is a term I'd use but you'd think I was talking about an operation.

2005 got my net back and suddenly my 3 to 4 paragraph barely able to post a day became a tremendous 7 paragraph and up epic for a specific fight because I. Love. This. So. Much. Ask Reno. My fight bout back into the game was by-far the most intense nights of my career because I was active, fierce, and finally took in everything I've learned. My character then is my main now. Jhieten represents that drive and dedication I put in from hours of even attempting to get one hour of net in a forum that demanded a decent level of quality in modern-fantasy clan feuding. An addiction is one that requires a fix from a fiend. You can't fix passion. I OTK'd Murrocko something nasty he never recovered from. I wonder till this day if he still thinks about that. Reno's proposal to go around wrecking shit titillated me more than the act itself. I think that's what makes me fight PVP. The idea of just fighting and killing itself is much more exciting and keeps me focused; however, let's ignore the paranoia some of my Ls awarded me. No one talks about their defeats. Shhhh.

2005 is my best year. Fighting here. Killing there. Being apart of a big clan and being its main big bad enforcer guy. I messed it up introducing Delve to Reno and had to kill the operation. I lament that still. Poor Reno. He was in the way of our cross-fire. Fellow zoner rivalry has its casualties I'm afraid, but it isn't like I didn't suffer. I became a moderator on Animeleague. That's pain. I became a new moderator for a new clan nation section thanks to Rita and... yeah, Delve; unfortunately, that was short lived because of a combination of both roleplay shenanigans and personal issues that were concurrent and intertwined. I broke my own separation of business and personal. We all learn the hard way. Back to RPGchat.

2006 is a year I don't like talking about. Let's talk about 2007. I did absolutely nothing of value on RPGchat because I got a little too caught up in making trouble ooc, arguments, and playing DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. Sorry Ru; however, this is the year that changed everything. TheZones Duel League. A tournament I made to just run a tournament on a forum no one cares about but me. I modeled the damn thing out of my love of Compuserve's zones which precipitated my penchant for unwarranted violence and murder. Compuserve no longer had its actual players in it so it's time to reinvent the wheel -- make it better. What a year to learn that players will cheat to win and cause drama. Taste of my own medicine (except the cheating part). TZDL2007 didn't change how I viewed the game anymore than just restructuring the definitions of rules and being more concrete; by the way, changes that are huge are usually subtle and slow. I say that unironically.

2009 though. I got Paradox, Ru came around, Argryia... what a player. Basically I got some veterans I knew from AOL and one from MSN (Mystic). Decoy got training to get into Vertex (we were going to crash RPGchat) and ran another fun tournament. This was a bit different though. I got to see Ares get completely crushed by Ru. Holy hell I didn't know she can play that way. Oh snap Argryia is actually pre -- THE $%#@ IS STRING META?! WHAT?! So that can be done.. I always wondered that. Huh.. guess Mystic couldn't handle that. Poor guy. Paradox why did you even use an EMP bomb that early? Now I have to call Meta-game. Everyone seemed to LOVE the definition list though. I learned that I've acquired a new talent and love for the game that transcended even violence itself. I discovered there's order in what people believed is chaos, and they didn't know because these phenomenons didn't have definitions. They were never invoked by name but by action. Man this universe gets bigger the smaller an object actually is. Then TZDL2011 hit and blew everything away. There's a demand.

At first people just like the definition list and some sites asked to borrow it. Ok cool, but now they are asking me to write more. They want to know these terminologies. There's a name for occurrences. I overhauled my baby, made live-streams, podcast interviews, and general fun asshattery in our ooc or phone conferences. I got to meet the wonderful people of ZEJ (once was called CoU) and that's how I got acquainted with Keileon (known as Jason at the time). Draven finally joined. Argryia and Ru is there and the first clan rivalry between the AoA and.. Vertex? Well can't really have a clan rivalry in a tournament that has people representing themselves but Lokanas sure believed he'd beat Argryia. I warned him not to underestimate her cause she's a girl. I know he thinks I fucked him over but that OTK is now legacy to a player who became the literal embodiment of top tier play at the time. She'll thank him moreso than insult the guy, but I'm sure his scorn is much more lethal. TZDL2011 was the height of some of the ooc memes and fun but I learned a lot about being a judge and running an event, a community, and myself. I've learned to calm down. I want my players, assets, to have fun. They like the balance, meta, and information. I will give them even more next time. They'd have to just wait 8 months for a semi-finals round... oops. $#@! Skypark.

TZDL2012 is when I learned the meta from a much more bigger picture and every year since my understanding grew. I became content in watching my players compete and perform to expected levels though Argryia just kept growing. Really. I got to see Paradox and Seth Mayvus come around, Draven compete, Keileon compete, Goliath debuts, Ru come back, and Argryia showing everyone she is a legitimately good player. I was not defanged -- quite the opposite. I realized my fangs needed sharpening, but it isn't your bite that's lethal. It's the force. What I saw there changed everything and it all came together again.. until certain shit happened but we'll just not bring it up. Sorry Seth and Paradox because your match suffered because of it.

From there on my love for exploration overcame the game itself.. by exploring the game itself.
vertex.wikia.com/wiki/Home_Page

Instead I invested my time understanding concepts, tactics, theories, and even functions of the game I thought I knew and I kind of actually did. That's not the thing that surprised me. What surprised me is that EVERYONE already knows.. they just don't know they are invoking these concepts, at least not by name or a uniformed jargon.. maybe lexicon? I'm not in the mood to synonym this. From here on I am much more interested in seeing new applications of the meta or how it's used rather than beating someone up.. but that's because I want to see order and structure to some degree. Prometheus Project. Not related to NASA. Dabo Ignem. I'll be punished accordingly, but first the mission. I dedicate a lot of my brain power into roleplaying and not just going in a thread and pretending to be a weeb because that doesn't interest me.. not in the conventional way. It's full-circle here. The competitive streak of the original zones and the free-form liberty of 2005 where RPGchat's c/g and Animeleague's.. CN? I don't know. Whatever. Anyway the free-form thing. Yeah. That. Bring back a time of roleplay where pvp was fun as much as it was deviously competitive, but this time with some uniformity and some structure. Definitely NO POLITICS.. unless IC where most people's attention SHOULD BE AT!

Just a brief announcement -
  • Dirge will no longer be a judge or work in TZDL in any official capacity.
  • Accepted Profiles have been placed in the original post of the thread (the ooc section with the rules and stuff)
  • The deadline for new applicants was reached last night. We will still be grading profiles as normal submitted in the thread.
The way you seem to be arguing it, these two would be completely unable to defend against each other's abilities and whoever shoots first wins, because 'Ki' doesn't interact with 'Prana'.

Why should it? There is no universal law that dictates the energy infrastructure of free-form. People create all sorts of things that behave in all sorts of ways with a multitude of fluff to either justify its properties to keep others from using it or for flavor. There are and were profiles of completely custom builds using energy types only unique to them to avoid abiding by "realm energies" which is a testament that not everything has to be connected by the way YOU describe them.

Also whoever shoots first wins is the ideal situation of combat, but that's unrelated to what you are subscribing.

The most we can do with compatibility is compare it to each other and their properties. We determine the behavior based on what was described. Dread energy deteriorates shit. So we throw lightning in? Well the behavior and ability of dread behaves one way so we abide by that. We cannot say lightning is unaffected; however, lightning is fast so we take into account its property and behavior equally. In this case it'd be based on what was constructed in the fight, how players described them, and what inherent properties they manipulate if any. In that situation it is word for word. The conflict is HOW both of them behave when in contact. Pollen's shroud, for example, describes how dark particles attack and slow down fast moving objects. We ranked it as S3 because despite what it can do it is limited not just in volume, but in ways I won't describe here without ruining a player strategy. It can still be interacted in a variety of ways meaning you don't need a specific build to handle it. How would this be compatible with Ether? From what I can see Ether is the engine of energies in a universe for magic or whatever, but who else abides by that? What if my world doesn't have ether. Are you going to say it does because you described it as such? Who are you? Do you understand where this is going?

We do not adhere to realm energies. We don't mind you having it to a specific extent (stacking not withheld) because that is how your characters operate. You use "ether" to generally pull from a variety of different types of energies to "fight" opponents with more specific builds and the potential to broaden its application for things that are more unique or obscure makes it a catch-all for stacking. You can draw from it or generate it, but to describe your opponent as using Ether when they explicit never used the term is Godmodding. This is the same debate from Discord "My magic vs your not magic" and my stance has always been:

If it isn't what you describe then it isn't your type of energy.

That is one of the basic free-form functions back when people used "chips" or devices to cancel out all magic in an area. Players will go "well I don't use magic" and then another will bring up the definition of magic in a fruitless attempt to blanket their foe in reclassification; however, the definition of magic works against them by virtue of "well just because YOU don't know how it works doesn't mean I don't" which can reclassify what you believe to be magic as not magic. The opposite is also true because if I copy and pasted how a m1911 works from ammunition type, powder, to the simple hammer ad decided to classify it as magic in my profile then it is magic.

Luchalliance players, however, have adopted a system whereby just about all mystical/supernatural phemonenon fall under the broad heading of 'Ether', and in which any/all users of ethereal abilities are able to match with any/all other users of ethereal abilities. Player A's Ki-based defenses and manipulations work against Player B's Prana-based manipulations and defenses, and vice versa. The system is intended to universalize applicability between different schools of magic or energy manipulation to better facilitate play.

Which is why I said "We don't do what you do in your own roleplay". Your personal energy catch-all is incompatible with whoever says it isn't to them.

This concept is so fundamental to how we play that I'm not actually surprised nobody ever explained it, we just assume it without thinking about it,

That was a critical mistake on your part entirely because you assumed it is universal on an ooc level. It isn't. It is only universal when people accept it as such. The main issue we had in this tournament are people not reading the rules:

Stacking - To place many different and/or unrelated powers/abilities on a character is regulated. There is no determined number of power(s) a character has access to, or how many different abilities a character can enact due to a specific power. An endless stack of limitless potential is restricted based on how wide of an application each power has in perspective to their potency; likewise, numerous applications of one power may also be regulated. This ruling will encompass any and all equipment too.

4th sentence of that ruling. The Stacking ruling is regulated because it is hard to determine how much or how little something can be considered stacking making it a very hard rule to enforce; however, a blatant amount of stacking, such as Ether, can easily be identified because it is a universal "realm energy" that can be used for anything and everything. Read the rules. The problem isn't compatibility. The problem is that you, and your crew, don't read. That isn't an attack on you. That is an attack on your ideaology to roleplaying because you cannot take the time to accommodate to the game you are playing, and then make the assumption that I will accommodate to you. This is what got Ultron rejected.

If it was such a fundamental law we wouldn't have this kind of discussion. No one would.

but nobody here is trying to get one over on the rest of the tournament. Our stuff works on you because you're a body and that's what it's targeted at, but in turn all of your stuff also works on us, because they're ethereal abilities and they interact with our ethereal abilities in the way they're meant to.

That is an assumption you are making. My main's doesn't use ethereal shit (not anymore specifically) and is classified at best as "natural" or metahuman at best. The core function of MY character is physical down to the brain, but it doesn't subscribe to how you'd describe ethereal. We are compatible as we aren't. I don't even know what Ethereal is outside of the definition, and this is a HUGE problem with regards to how powers work. No one has a clear-cut agreed way of something working in a particular way because it doesn't exist. Roleplayers in a chat server somewhere in a tavern setting probably don't even know what your brand of ether is and if they do agree they had no problem interacting in roleplaying without it.

Because that is literally the point of Fair Play.

Fair play can be misinterpreted for anyone's individual benefit.

Official announcement. I will make them here instead so they aren't buried under the ooc. I don't know if I said this in the ooc but I have mentioned it in Discord so I'll reiterate.

Since we're running behind schedule we'll have to move Preliminaries to May 8th. This is very annoying for me and I imagine everyone else, but the amount of profile sheets don't seem to stop. The judges are trying as hard as we can but our rate is slow because we are extremely thorough in assessing what you guys submit. We hammer at it every night.

For the deadline: That is unchanged. Today, April 28th at 11:59PM EST GMT-5 we will NO LONGER accept anymore profiles; however, we will still be assessing profiles submitted and giving pendings and rejections when necessary. That means ANYONE who joined before the deadline will be given their fair chance as if like the deadline wasn't reached. We haven't had this many profile sheets since the original TZDL in 2007 (this one exceeding that record).

For those in pending: bare with us.

For everyone else: be super patient. We're doing the best we can.
<Snipped quote by Devil>

I would think that's rather obvious, and I'm not sure why you would think anyone was planning to do anything otherwise. Hence why the sheets offered have been tailored specifically for this event and are not the ones normally used. Any paranoid assumptions to the contrary, I guarantee you that anyone from this little band of brigands will be following your rules to the letter, and we have ways of policing our own if they don't.

Thanks for your work thus far, here's to an entertaining tourney!

The only real profile sheet tailored for the tournament was done by DLL himself so far. The rest of the lucha group, save you and everett, have had pending on them. It wouldn't be fair to make that an indication of your group, but rather a little disingenuous on your part. The reality is that his comment was referencing aspects to things not spoken to directly to Enki (that I'm aware of). The more in-depth of those suggest he, and the rest of you, are given a little more or little less information than necessary or permitted. When DLL spoke about grandfatering specific stuff your group does (FFL's YGG and so on) it was when I decided to say "you guys do your own but not here" because some of the exact problems stem from either universal "realm energies" like Ether or ambiguity in unspecified objects. This actually validates my point.

We don't adhere to "multiverse" principles or "realm" energies or whatever.

So when entering a tournament of this free-form nature: you must explain your abilities a bit more thoroughly and understand it may not operate as widely as it does back at your home site(s). This is why Dias's profile has an addendum noting TZDL's version of his Ether Burn.
I'm getting information from Enki, who's expressed frustration with the process. Wherever that frustration is coming from on his end, I don't know. All I've seen are snippets here and there of PMs he's received.

I am interested in the other stuff I read up their about your character's JRPG elements to your build

i'd like to think it's obvious at this point that I'm not here to stir up shit. I'm simply doing my job as the front man for my group. Enki's having a rough time of it lately and not just here, so I figured I'd step in and explain, take a load off of him. That's what I do for my buddies. I'm not trying to piss in your coffee or spy on your clubhouse or whatever, I'm trying to help a buddy of mine have some fun here.

The fact you and Enki are saying some weird specific things make me a little suspicious of the information given, but I am not accusing you of being an antagonist. I know what you are doing, and I would be doing the same if I were in your position; but, I am not in your position. I am in my position. I ask questions for answers. You guys have a way of playing over there, but as long as you are over here, in TZDL, you have to abide by the tournament standards.
The back-and-forth and constant sniping has been difficult on a few of us, especially after the Ultron shitstorm.

Enki, like myself, comes from a group of players with a collective storyline and history over fifteen years in the making, where the JRPG elements people keep poking at Enki to clarify, quantify, or cull are accepted as standard parts of the toolkit. They've been grandfathered in by now, and certain players are more steeped in the old traditions than others. I could cull my weapons, Runes, and Materia easily enough; others don't have it quite so fortunate.

I request patience and understanding, if any can be spared. The original Rosa profile is still available if it's requested, but Enki talks to us about the progress he's making over PMs with Mobius, and that progress has been slow and somewhat fraught. Ergo, a less objectionable profile offered to, as they say in Cancoun, "GET IT OVER WITH ALREADY".

Where are you getting information from that says otherwise? We've been patient as possible. Are you and Enki privy to some information that I am not aware of or that you shouldn't have access to?
Announcement:

  • Doll Maker has become a judge. This is to help and expedite the amount of approvals. I didn't mind having 5 anyway but Lest opted not to be screened.
  • Due to the stupidly slow pace of us reviewing characters (much, much arguing in the judging channel). I've decided we'll continue the deadline (or extend if necessary). Friday 11:59PM is the final day for all new entries, but those who are on pending may still be guided across to finalization before rejection or approval. For those who are not pending right now, we will get to you very shortly even after the deadline in the severe case of lag. Essentially, profile after the date will be declined.

We are behind because of how extremely thorough we're being. Please be patient with us.
I keep being told mobi wants more elaboration, but nothing on what. I'm pretty sure the guy who was dual accounting his own tournament and particpating did better than this.

Who are you hearing these things from?
I can't be arsed. This isn't a typo. This is intentional.

I cannot be arsed. I cannot be bothered. I cannot be damned. I cannot be assed to your homework for you. The judges already have a hard time playing catchup since were going over every entrant fairly and thoroughly. Each player who participated had at least one issue minus DLL who deserves a banana sticker. Everyone else took the time to craft their profiles or at least make them before the tournament and just adjusted accordingly. So since they can be arsed, assed, fucked, and damned to take the time then so can I and PM them about any discrepancies IF any; however, I cannot "guarantee" the same treatment for you Metal. It is in the very rules. You decided to copy and paste to cut time. I decided to not give you anymore than one full chance. Had you read the rules and understood the b/r and scheduling system you would have attempted to make any additional changes.

You would have accommodated much like everyone else has. There is no rule about canon characters or even blatant thievery; however, it doesn't mean I am obligated to give you more than one chance. You must take responsibility for not screening Ultron beforehand and wonder "is THIS ability acceptable?" because if you had you would have been given a PM and not a straight rejection. This IS the official stance on your verdict. From here you either submit a new profile or don't, but turning this thread into the fiasco it has will ultimately get you barred from TZDL and perhaps even permanently. The decision is yours.

Ultron was not truly dismissed upon inspection since there is no real rule saying not to use fictional characters with sources of their info from another site (copy and pasting Ultron); however, the scale of Ultron's defenses, laser hypnosis, and ambiguity for his weapon creation means the author didn't read the rules thoroughly enough. This implies he picked a character without reading the rules so I can't be arsed to truly give him a chance. Please resubmit a new character.

Today I came on late. We'll bust our ass tomorrow for more sheets.
