Luke was stunned that the SUV was still able to turn over, and without a second thought he said, "Buckle up! We're heading for the country!" Luke had no idea which way they were heading actually, but as long as it was away from here it was good enough. He dropped his foot on the accelerator like a sack of hammers, and the SUV was moving it. Luke looked in the mirror and saw the approaching hoard becoming somewhat smaller. They were on what appeared to be the main street of the downtown area and it was a straight shot out of town . Luke smirked for a second and looked at Ryan and said, "I even like the paint job on this one who knows maybe...." just then the SUV began to lurch and eventually die out. Luke looked down on the dashboard and saw just about every light was glowing.

Luke looked at Ryan and said, "I swear of it wasn't for bad luck we'd have no luck." To make matters worse the approaching hoard was starting to close in on them again. Luke said, "Well looks like this is where we make a stand." He shrugged his shoulders and said, "I guess, and in terms of strategy surrounding them is off the table." Luke looked just down the road less than 50 yards and saw a set of stairs leading off of the main street. Luke smiled and said, "They might have the numbers and have us outgunned, in a sense, but I say it's time we go underground." Luke glanced back at the SUV and said, "The SUV can be pushed in neutral. We get it to that opening we can make it into a barricade, and then give them a little bit of a surprise."

Luke put the SUV into neutral and said, "Let's move! It won't be long before they get here." With that Luke and Ryan jumped out of the SUV and began pushing it. Inspite of the fact that it was in neutral pushing the SUV was like trying to push a boulder through an ocean of wet cement. Both men grunting and straining and the sweat was starting to roll as their muscles were aching. Luke wryly said, "Next time look for a Prius. Only about ten more yards come man we get this first down and the game is all over." They managed to position the SUV right in front of the stairwell opening, and Luke said, "It goes without saying don't worry about scavenging right now. Let's go downstairs."

Ryan and Luke bolted for the bottom of the stairs. Once they got there Luke pulled out an arrow and said, "Before we lave the city once and for all we gotta stop off at a sporting goods store, and hope they got some arrows. I'm almost half way through my stock of quality arrows, but in this case I can't trust a homemade one." Luke struck the arrow on the ground twice and it sparked. The arrow tip was now on-fire and Luke loaded it into to his bow. He said, "The second I let this go we bolt, because that gas tank still had some fuel in it. When this arrow hits it's gonna be a glorified do not disturb sign. Firing in 3,2,1!" As soon as Luke called out 1 he could already hear Ryan running away, and once the arrow was released Luke was right behind him. Luke said, "What happened? There was supposed to be..." Just then the unmistakable sound of a an explosion occurred combined with the sound of several things screaming in pain. Luke took a few steps back towards the opening and said, "Yep we got 'em." He walked back to Ryan and said, "It's a shame I really did like that paint job." The two men chuckled and high-fived one another and Luke said, "Good job my friend." Luke cut on his flashlight and said, "Let's see what we can find down here." With that Luke and Ryan began to head further into the subway.
Ronnie made her way up to her quarters which was more like a glorified broom closet. She didn't mind it too much it was four walls and a ceiling and during these times that was considered a luxury. As she gathered her gear the words about Marcus being sick hit somewhat of chord with Ronnie. It would explain a lot about what really happened to him, because Ronnie refused to believe that anyone could ever get the better of Marcus. Although Ronnie did admit to herself that her opinion and point of view concerning Marcus was somewhat biased. The man not only taught her how to use her leg to her advantage, how to survive as Peace Keeper, but they were lovers at one point in time.

Ronnie gathered her gear and then saw an ant crawling across the floor and remembered an important lesson that Marcus taught her; things aren't always as they appear. She looked at the ant for a moment as her mind drifted back to a barren wasteland that at one point in time had cornfields as far as the eye could see. It was a scorching day in Iowa Ronnie was just getting used to her leg as Marcus and her were out for run. Marcus told her unless she could keep up with him there was no way he would allow her back into action. For the 7th time Marcus smoked her on open terrain and Ronnie was sitting on the ground near some rocks another 2 miles away from the finish line.

Marcus approached her and said, "So is that it kid? You're just gonna give up and call it? What a waste of my time and your talent!"

Ronnie snapped back, "HEY! In case you haven't noticed I'm not half the woman I used to be!"

Marcus shook his head and said, "You think what you see is all that there is to life? Wow! I'm amazed you've as long as you have Veronica."

Marcus knew that Ronnie hated being called that and just glared at him for a moment. Marcus walked over to the rock pile and said, "Come over for a moment." Ronnie walked over and Marcus said, "What do you see here?"

Ronnie replied, "Rocks. Wow are you saying I'm being stubborn?"

Marcus shook his head and said, "Look closer. Do you see the ant here?"

Ronnie nodded and said, "Yeah. Is there a point here?"

Marcus nodded and said, "Yes there is. Outward appearances say that this ant is small, frail, and weak, Yet it still lives on. It doesn't see itself as small and frail and weak. It sees itself as a living being that is more than just it's outward appearances. For the next two hours I want you to sit there and stare at that ant."

As Marcus walked away Ronnie shook her head, but still kept her focus on the ant moving about. How it went about it's life with a sense of purpose and focus. Ronnie finally began to understand what Marcus was trying to get her to do.

The next day when they ran...Ronnie got smoked again, but she finished the run. For two weeks her and Marcus ran their 5 mile race everyday until finally Ronnie tied him, and then two days later she finally broke through.

Ronnie nodded at the ant in her closet and said, "Keep an eye on the place while I'm gone, and no wild parties." She grabbed her gear and headed for the well.
Well it looks like this one is D-O-A.

If I see another Firefly one I'm up for it.

See ya all up the road.

I listen intently as Charles tells his story. A librarian is a powerful ally in a war such as this. They are guides to where we have been, where we are, and where we're going. I know Charles is a young man and that is putting a lot of pressure on him, but he chose to become a part of the fight and obviously someone in the revolution has seen something in him, One thing I've learned in my time with the Police is that you never know what's gonna happen until the bullets start flying.

I've seen men and women who were tough as nails in the boxing ring, or during war-games wet themselves and cry for their moms at the first sign of a real fight breaking out. Then again I've seen men and women who weighed maybe 110 soaking wet, and looked like they belonged in the records room become raging beasts the minute they hit the street. So the bottom line for Charles is I need to give him a chance to prove himself.

Mario turns to Charles and says, "You I see greatness in you. You are smart and you have a quality that we all must have in our cause." Mario puts his hand on the back of his neck and says, "Courage. You showed courage by coming here this evening. By trusting a man who could have us both arrested, and either being re-educated or killed. You are now one of us Charles. We will be in touch with you for we are getting ready to launch many offenses." Mario looks at both of us and says, "We truly for the first time in many years have the momentum in this war, and now we are ready to seize it. We are recruiting many others to our cause, and we are making ready to strike."

Mario nods at both of us and says, "We will be in touch, but for now it is time to go. Study those books my brothers for our time is drawing near." He only nods at Charles, but Mario looks at me and says, "I am proud of you. Not only to have called you son, but now we are brothers." I don't even think twice I embrace Mario and we just hold onto one another as I say, "I love you papa. I love you very much." Mario replies, "And I you my brother I you."

We break our embrace and I look at Charles and say, "If you need an escort home I'll get you home, but in the mean time I suggest we get going for our own safety. It sounds like the fight is getting a little too close for comfort."

I turn back around to say something to Mario, but he has already disappeared. I say, "I gotta get him to teach me that one."

Just then I hear some shuffling in the nearby dumpster. I raise my hand to Charles and I glance over to the dumpster. I open the lid and my mouth drops open as I see Ellen Westlake laying in there.

I say to her, "What are you doing in there Miss Westlake?"

She replies, "Believe it or not I want to join you all in the revolution."

I say, "Sure you do and I was born yesterday."

Ellen pulls out a transcom link. It's used by the propaganda office to record live events for immediate broadcasts and she says, "Well then Happy Birthday a day late." She plays back our entire conversation. The video is horrid but the audio is perfection. I look at Charles and say, "I think things just got complicated."
Jon watched as Wes walked away and a couple of others came up to him and Jon was cordial to them as he began to sip on a Gin & Tonic. However in the back of his mind he remembered the time in college when he stood his ground. It almost backfired and nearly cost him everything in a class that was crucial for him in terms of graduating.

Her name was Penelope Rogers and she had the talent to make it in show business. She was beautiful and charming on every level, sadly though Penelope had one fatal flaw. All it took was one drink and she was 180 degrees from beautiful and charming. Jon was in a theater group and everyone warned him about Penelope in that she was high risk high reward. This was a project everyone needed to do well on in order to graduate and that playing it safe was what was called for. Jon though dug in and fought for Penelope and eventually they went along with him.. Penelope was everything everyone wanted in a colleague. She was on time, ready to go, and took direction without an issue.

Then came the night of the performance and Penelope was no where to be seen. Until about five minutes before the project was due to start and she showed up; bombed out of her skull. If she went on stage in that condition Jon and company were dead in the water. Luckily for them Jon had talked to the Stage Manager and got her to read up on Penelope's part, and he worked with her privately as an understood. Mary Taylor pulled off the part brilliantly and saved everyone's grade. If it wasn't for that they all would've failed because they were responsible for each other's conduct.

Wes had a reputation as being a rather extreme method actor, and at times being semi-unpredictable as result. That was one of the unwritten rules of why people shied away from working with him. Jon though felt there was a brilliance to his madness and Paddy was the part to catapult from working/well-known actor to bankable superstar. Where Jon really saw this brilliance he couldn't pin-point it, but Jon could feel it as though it were a tangible item. He watched Wes and then walked away outside to the pool area.

He finished his drink and put the glass out on a table. Jon took a long look at the pool and finally he said, "Springsteen is right. It takes a leap of faith to get things going." Jon smiled broadly, put his phone and wallet under a rock behind some bushes, and full dress he executed a perfect head first dive.
Ronnie listened intently with no expression her face. When Boyd finished she took a swig of her water and then got up and slowly began to pace. The members of the group knew that when Ronnie did this she was weighing all the information in her mind. She stared out into the night and began to nod. Ronnie walked back to the table and sat down taking another swig.

She looked at Boyd and said, "I'll tell ya boss-man a disguised assassin is nothing to screw with. This guy may be just getting his kicks off of taking out Peace Keepers just for kicks, because I knew Marcus he was as deadly as they came. This guy had to some kind of special to take him down." Ronnie dropped her head slightly and when she brought it up her eyes had tears in them. Ronnie took a deep breath and said, "He and I worked together a few times. Marcus saved my life twice and yeah we got close but we both knew it was for the better if we went our own separate ways."

Ronnie closed her eyes and shook her head. The tears fell from her face and she wiped them away when she opened her eyes there was a look of anger and hatred coursing through them. She said, "Assassin or not that son of a bitch will pay one way or another." Ronnie finished her water and said, "Besides 5k around here will go a long way around here. There doesn't seem to be any commitments on the social calendar for this month, so yeah I say we go." Ronnie looked around said, "Okay yes I will admit that this one has personal angle for me, but that being said I swear I will not let my feelings could my judgment. I will grieve on my own time and in my own way. Not to mention the folks in Dallas they ain't exactly known for treating assassins with kindness." She took a deep breath and said, "I've seen them take care of assassins especially ones that go after Peace Keepers. If you're lucky you'll just end up in front of the firing squad, and that's if they're in a generous mood. Those folks can get very creative. I'll tell you all about the one involving salt, and an open wound on the back of someone's neck sometime."

Ronnie finished her water and tossed the bottle into the trash can. When it landed she looked at Boyd and said, "Say when and I'll be ready in 10 minutes."
No problem...this looks like it'll be a good one. I should have something up in the next 24 hours.
I'm in the same boat as lydyn...I've been writing for Atom (off and on) since 2006...I'm starting to run dry in terms of being creative for her. Would like to keep going with her...right now though...it's kinda tough going.
The moonlight bathed the upstairs room the stronghold through a skylight as Ronnie danced around a feed bag hanging from the ceiling. It was a crude punching bag stuffed with sawdust and foam but it served it's purpose. There heavy pieces of metal on the floor along with various other items that could be used to get a decent workout in with. Boyd and the others did what they could to help furnish this room and make it a workout center and it was serviceable. Her black sweat pants, pulled back red hair, and white tank top helped keep her some what cool on the hot night, but only to a point.

Ronnie often times would come up here to either blow off steam, or to prove to herself that she still had what it took to be a member of the crew inspite of her artificial leg. Although there were times that leg got in her way Ronnie also knew ways to sucker others in with it as well. She would play up the "poor helpless me" angle and then a couple of quick sucker punches to the throat and one to the solar-plexus was all it took. Ronnie studied "The Art of War" by General Sun-Tzu and this tactic was known as enticing the enemy by giving them bait that tactic many times saved Ronnie in the field. She understood that the true art of war which the General spoke of was all about deception. When they were weak they had to feign strength, when they were strong feign weakness and so many other tactics. Ronnie had them all committed to memory and she lived them out.

Just as she was getting ready to throw a combo her artificial leg pulled and Ronnie grunted in pain as the leg pulled on her stump. She bent down and found that her foot got caught in a nail. She signed and shook her head as Ronnie felt the sweat fly off. Ronnie said, "Well I guess that's God's way of telling me that I'm done for the night."

Ronnie freed her foot and made her way over to a corner and sat next to a candle that was flickering. She picked up a towel and rubbed the sweat off of her face. Ronnie then removed her leg and wiped out the sweat from inside her leg. No matter how many times she had seen that stump it was something that Ronnie could never get used to seeing. Usually this led to a moment where in her mind she could still hear the shotgun blast, the smell of gun powder in the air, the sickeningly numb feeling in her leg, and worst of all the feeling of falling back and hitting the floor. Just laying there helpless and trying to get out of the way. If it wasn't for Chad Weston pulling her out of the way who knows how many more shots she would've taken. The last thing she remembered was hearing Chad call for the field medic, and then waking up 2 days later in a make shift hospital.

Ronnie shook her head as though she was trying to get rid of annoying bug. She strapped her leg back on and made her way down the stairs. She walked over to the bar and got out a bottle of water and began to drink. After a couple of gulps she joined Boyd at his table and said, "Well another day above ground about finished." She raised her bottle and said, "All in all not bad."

Works for me. So was she a member of Boyd's crew that got (mostly) destroyed? Or is she one of his father's soldiers? Basically I'm asking when did Boyd recruit her, was it before or after his own group got wasted in Minnesota?

After the group from Minnesota got wiped out.
