I don't see it as wrong if you credit the people involved. I said it in the topic post, and I'll say it again. Concerning video games too, it becomes free publicity if it IS done right, and when it's done wrong, it is wrong.

I wouldn't know about 3/4'ths of the artists I do now if it were not for me seeing pictures they had done posted in youtube videos, or on websites like this one.

I still think permission matters, though. It's their work of art, they decide what gets done with it. And just because its free publicity doesn't really mean people want their art used without permission
Name: Mysaren Fortier
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Nationality: Black // French
Physical Description:
Before the augmentation, Mysaren stood about 6'3, at 180 pounds. She's muscular, with a chiseled, prominent jaw, and square face. She keeps her hair in a frohawk, which is generally dyed a light pink, although her hair is naturally black. She has dark blue eyes, dark brown skin, and freckles covering her face and body. After the enhancements, she stands about 2 inches taller, due to her leg enhancements. She also has noticeable cochlear implants in both ears. She stands in a strange manner as well, due to the fact her spine was replaced.

Skillset:
Definitely more street smart than book smart, she knows most of the city by heart, making it much easier for her to move and travel with efficiency. She's well versed in most criminal behaviors, breaking and entering, how to trespass, etc. She knows how to get to where she wants to be with minimal trouble. She also has a wide knowledge about the majority of drugs that are currently on the streets.

She's also very good at reading a person, their tics and behaviors, in order to manipulate (or sometimes seduce) them. She knows a lot about the human mind and how it works, mostly from years of experience. She also knows that everyone comes with a price, and it's not hard for her to figure out how to get people to do what she wants.

She also has many connections to the underworld, whether it be for scrap parts, drugs, weapons, sometimes even blood or people.

History

Psychological Profile:
The character's outlook on life, including any psychological trauma they've endured.

Modifications: (The ones already listed are standard issue for all characters)
  • Communications suite, HUD and neural-computer, all standard issue – Vigil agents are able to text by thinking it among each other on a heavily encrypted wireless network. In fact, the computer works off brain impulses and is easily one of the most sophisticated and useful implants they have; what's more, its capabilities have yet to be fully exploited. The downside of this implant is that it includes a cortex bomb with an anti-tampering device. A captured agent can set it off, destroying the hardware inside, or a signal from control can do the same. This is to prevent the enemy from learning the capabilities of implanted agents.
  • Internal air supply and aerial toxin filter -- this also has the added advantage of making the agent immune to vampire pheromones, as some types of vampires are known to use this to seduce their prey.
  • Blood/liquid toxin filter -- the obvious is at work here -- vampires use their blood as a means of controlling mortals, and this system (and everyone, even non field agents, in the Vigil organization have this implant) screens out one of most subtle weapons a vampire has, rendering them functionally immune to being controlled through ingested blood the way mortal thralls of a vampire might be.
  • Eye augmentation; a HUD showing all sorts of system data, such as the status of implants, as well as allowing for low-light and ultra-sound modes of vision, the latter being thought to be more effective than thermographics when dealing with vampires, who tend to run cold if they haven't fed lately.
  • Other implants as you see fit. Be creative, the Vigil is experimenting.

Equipment: (The items already listed are standard issue.)
  • Mimetic Camouflage (Predator) coat, though this is designed to look more like a trenchcoat -- no doubt some project engineer with a penchant for the dramatic, or an interest in fashion design. The coat is actually stylish, which serves a dual purpose as vampires tend to dress stylishly and surround themselves with the stylishly dressed. This allows Vigil agents one more edge. Of course, they call it the Predator Coat. Because the engineers are geeks. (This is a standard issue Vigil item)
  • Modular, caseless assault rifle/carbine. Bullpup, caseless ammunition, synched with existing implants and capable of mounting a variety of accessories including a 25mm grenade launcher whose munitions range from conventional high explosive to nano-guided scattered mines. It also syncs with HUD implants for improved accuracy in a mechanism similar to a bluetooth link. The trigger is electric and the weapon includes a biometric security system; anyone but someone authorized to handle it and it will blow; that is a standard feature on most any weapon the Vigil has in service with its teams. (This is a standard issue Vigil item)
  • A number of electronic accessories, including a PDA tablet and other items to assist in making physical connection with computer equipment. (This is a standard issue Vigil item)
  • Grenades, mostly white phosphorus. The organization has designed a 'grenade' that involves a strobing UV light that damages vampires -- it is known as 'the disco ball'.
  • Other items as you see fit.
True. I won't protest that.

But again, you have measures that you can take to prevent your artwork from being stolen: Not uploading it. Choosing to upload it means, again, you silently accept that someone, somewhere, is going to take it and use it when your not looking.

Okay. That's fine, and that's a fact of life. Sure. I'm just saying that it's wrong, and people shouldn't do it. I'm not saying that I'm going to stop it from happening ever again, fine, whatever, I'm not asking for a miracle. I'm just asking for people to maybe look at their actions and realize that what they're doing is shitty. Most people who take art and use it in RP posts don't even know what they're doing is wrong.
Though when I did type out a description of a Maus undergoing repairs, you said that people weren't looking for a 900 paragraph description.

Yet here your saying that it's lazy to use artwork in place of a description or as a supplement.

Then what are we, the roleplayers, supposed to do? Nobody wants to read brick walls of text and all the artists around the web don't want their work to be used. It seems like the REAL victims of this whole debate are us, rather than the artists.

You don't have to write out a 900 paragraph description, but a few more sentences won't hurt anybody. You aren't the real victims, because your art isn't being stolen.

Also, that post you wrote wasn't really a description, but more of an RP post.
I pull most pictures I use while roleplaying primarily from google images, therefore who they exactly they belong to is usually unknown, since I have far more important things to worry about. Odds are, I'm using pictures taken by someone else, from someone else, and then there's a long change to the actual source. Yet again, this isn't of much consequence from me, since I'm only using the artwork/picture, not "stealing" it. When I say use it as "supplemental" material, I mean to use it only to enhance your writing, such as putting a picture of a location when you make a RP for instance. If this makes me a poor writer, then I don't really care, since I only do what I do for the enjoyment. I don't care and neither should any of you.

That's laziness. Plain and simple, that's laziness, and I care because I am an artist. I put effort, and time into my art. I make art because I enjoy it. I don't care if you enjoy roleplaying, if I don't want you to use my art, plain and simple, don't use my art. I made it, and I decide what, in theory, should be done with it. I'm not saying it's going to put someone out of business if you use their art, I'm saying is a dick move, and it's a lazy move for people who can't seem to type out a few more words.
Again, it's not stealing, since it's still the work of the artist, unless I were to lie and say I was the one who created it, which would actually be a "shitty" thing to do. You're just using it in a way to supplement your writing. Asking for permission is irrelevant, since the use of the art is not taking away anything from the artist, nor is it belittling the work that they put into it, or causing any kind of damage.

if you need to steal someone's art to "supplement" your writing, you're probably not a good writer.

asking for permission does help, because then the artist can be like "yes, go forth, do this thing." at this point, stealing art or using art that does not belong to you is nothing but laziness. why not just. write a description. make your own art. you don't have to use someone elses art. and taking someones art without permission and using it and, very likely not crediting it or crediting it to the wrong source because one was too lazy to go back and see who belongs to does take away from the effort they put into it, because you are taking something that someone created and using it in a way that it was not intended to be used.

the artists opinion is the only opinion that really matters, even if you don't think its stealing/takes anything way, because they created the fucking thing.

@Valor

its wrong if you didn't ask permission/they specifically said no to others using it
Though really, Ethan does have a point.

If an artist truly didn't want people to EVER take their pictures, simply not posting them would suffice. They could privately message people them, thus avoiding putting them in their profile. Set everything to private so that only people given specific links could view it, or Email the person the artwork. By posting them, every artist has to silently accept that someone, somewhere, will download it.

That's simply how the internet is. It's not a nice thing to think, but we would be in a utopia if it were not.

but, as an artist, if I do something I'm proud of, you're damn right I'm going to post it somewhere. Why? I'm proud of it. I don't want to just PM it to a few people, I want people to see it, give criticism, whatever. I'm not asking for world peace, I'm asking for a bit of courtesy and for people to realize that it's shitty to steal peoples art.
I hardly see the point of making a cake and showing it to a wide variety of people with only the purpose of looking at it. At the end of the day, making a cake is to usually have the intention to share it with others, unless you only want to eat it yourself, which you have the freedom to do so, just don't put it in front of other people. Obviously, that analogy is the same with artwork. People put effort into literally everything in this world, and using someone's artwork for something so minor like a RP is not even worth caring about. If it bothers you, then you're free to abstain, I just see no reason why I really should give a damn.

It's still something that someone put time and effort into it, and I'd be pretty damn disappointed to see a bunch of people I don't even know using my artwork for something I didn't give them permission to. It doesn't matter if it's just an RP, it's still someone's art that they did not give you permission to use. You should give a damn because it's stealing and incredibly rude to just take someone's art and slap it into a post with no rhyme or reason or permission.
You're inserting morals into something that's hugely insignificant. If you find some art online, then just use it. It's just a roleplay after all, and there are millions of pictures, arts, etc already readily available online and trying to curtail people using someone else's artwork in this manner is pointless and a waste of everyone's time. Besides, artwork should only be used as supplemental material to enhance your writing, and because of this, you might as well consider using their artwork for this as a big whoopdeedo.

Stealing someone's art that they spent probably a significant amount of time on is not insignificant. Lets say you made a cake. It's the best cake ever, and you decided to put it on display because you are proud of this cake. Suddenly, people start coming up to the cake and digging their hands into it, taking huge chunks out of it and throwing it all over the wall. You just wanted to show off your cake, you didn't want a bunch of people you barely know stealing it and using it very haphazardly.

Stealing art isn't just something that's 'no big deal." Someone put time and effort into that, and having a bunch of people use it without your consent and knowledge is wrong.

@Valor

No one is asking for a huge 900 paragraph wall of text, they're just asking what your character looks like.
I'm definitely interested.
