He sighed and looked between the two of us. "Well if you want to talk to the General, you've lost out. I'm not the General anymore." He stood up wearily and moved over to his desk. "I've been stood down. I didn't agree with the governments choices to close down the camp and send you all off to the front line. So you're wasting your time, I can't help you."
I stepped forwards into the General's office, rubbing my now throbbing ribs gently with a frown. "I don't think so." I said as I noticed an official looking man sitting in an armchair in the corner of the room, his head in his hands. "Uh, hi... Mr. General sir?" I rolled my eyes at my own ridiculous wording.
The man glanced up at us, looking tired and stressed. "Sorry. Who are you?" He asked with a sigh, obviously not in the mood to be chatting.
I shrugged gently, my ribs beginning to ache from all this walking. "Who know's, maybe the security left to help contain the riot in the food hall." I suggested as we reached the third door on the right. From inside I could hear low voices talking quickly and urgently. Raising an eyebrow at Daisy, I knocked twice and immediately heard the voices drop, seconds later the door was being hauled open and a menacing looking man was snarling down at us.
"Sorry to interrupt, we just wanted a word w-" Not letting me finish, he scoffed and pushed us aside, striding past us and out of the building.
"He better be, I haven't got enough energy to be running all over camp to find him." I said as I followed her inside the building. The foyer was small and warm as we stepped inside. There were a few chairs dotted around the walls, but the desk that sat against the back wall took up most of the space. A young man sat behind it, his glasses slowly slipping down his nose as he read intently over a stack of paperwork.
"Hi." I said, announcing our presence and he started, pushing his glasses up his nose as he looked up at us. "Know where we can find the General?"
I nodded and set off in the direction that I remembered his office to be in. Not even five minutes later, we were pushed off the pathway by a group of armed guards who were running in a solid group towards the cafeteria. I shook my head. "Glad we got out of there when we could." I said shooting a glance at Daisy. "Hopefully no one gets hurt."
I looked down at the ground, tired and irritated with the situation we were in. "I'm sorry too. I just don't know what we can do. There's just no outcome that looks good to me." I said sliding my hands into my pockets. "Let's just go and find the General, he might be able to shed some sort of light on this, get rid of the confusion."
"How? How are you getting out of here?" I asked suddenly frustrated. "We don't know anything about this place, you can't just up and leave, they'll kill you. How do you expect to last out there? We don't know where the nearest town is, we don't know the terrain, we could be a hundred miles from anything and you want to leave. Just walk out of here like there's nothing stopping you. Well I can't. I can't leave, I won't last out there any more than I'd last on the front line."
Letting my hand drop from her arm, I surveyed the area around us. It was quiet, all we could hear was the sounds of anger from behind us. "I guess they can." Maybe they were sending us out for that purpose exactly. We were taking up space after all. After our first base had been attacked and we'd intruded into this camp, what I thought was generosity had apparently been a burden. None of us had trained in weeks, they had to know that we weren't ready to fight. We needed time and they weren't going to give it.
I gingerly pushed myself up from the table and grabbed Daisy by the arm. "Come on let's get out of here, we don't want to be in the middle of another riot." I told her, trying to keep calm as I guided her out of the room. "We'll go to the General, see if it's true and if it is we can try and change his mind."
