"It's a tricky one, but I think I'm getting there." I said as I peered closely at the lock, twisting and turning the hair pin in an effort to unlock the chest.
"But why take the key and not the chest? Especially if he's gone for good, I mean he's not the General anymore so he would have moved all of his stuff out, right?" I asked glancing over at her as she searched through his desk, looking for a key I desperately hoped she would find. I wasn't so sure this lock would crack like the others.
I looked from Daisy to the gold lock, gleaming brightly as it rested upon the black of the chest. "Maybe... but it does look pretty new, those cell locks were old. Under normal circumstances I shouldn't have been able to pick them, it was a fluke to be honest." I glanced back to Daisy. "But I guess I can give it a go."
I reached into my pocket and pulled the bobby pin that Nina had given to me earlier to help them break out of the cells.
"Maybe start looking for a key, just in case this doesn't work?" I suggested as I gently knelt down beside the chest and grabbed the lock in my hand.
"What is it?" I asked turning away from the cupboard I was searching through, looking over at Daisy as she knelt over a large black chest.
"Was that here before?" I wondered as I walked over to join her. "I didn't notice it earlier, and I feel like that's something one tends to notice."
I ran a hand along the top of the chest, the black wood was soft under my fingers. "I wonder what's in it."
Thumbing through the folders that sat on top of the sideboard, I shook my head. "No, it doesn't look like anythings in these. They're mostly bills for power." I threw the folder I was holding aside and picked up the next one. "Gas." I said flicking through the sheet of invoices, casting that folder aside and grabbing the next once. "Water..."
"I'll check these drawers and cupboards." I said tossing the last folder back on it's pile and gesturing below to the sideboard they stood on.
"Well," I said as I stepped into the room behind Daisy and scanned the tidy room, "this is a nice change."
I couldn't decide if this would make it easier or harder to find any maps that could be here.
"I guess, I'll start over here." I gestured to the left, towards a table with various stacks of papers piled on top of one another. "You check the desk, there could be something useful in that."
I nodded, agreeing with her as we rounded a corner and saw the building we wanted dead ahead of us.
"Okay, we're here." I said wanting to get this done just as much as she did.
Moving up to the stark white building, I made sure Daisy stood beside me before I pushed open the door.
The man behind the desk didn't even blink as we walked in, doing exactly what he was doing last time. We didn't say a word as we walked past him and went down the hall towards the ex-General's office.
"I wonder if he's still in here." I murmured to Daisy as as we stopped outside the closed door.
I hesitated before answering her. Would we make it out of here safely?
"I don't know." I sighed truthfully. "I'd like to say yes, of course we'll get out of here in one piece, all of us... but I really don't know. How can I?"
I glanced over at her. "You know they'll be expecting this; rebellion. Jaxlor's and The Tilerian Guards, they've got to know they haven't got everyone in custody or under lock down. They'll be expecting this." I said voicing what I'd been thinking since this began.
I watched the others jog off, going to complete their assigned jobs. "Yeah," I said turning to Daisy, "Let's do this."
A new found determination had spread within me, I wasn't going to let either one of this group down, I couldn't.
"C'mon, General's office first. Hopefully it'll be just as deserted as last time and we can just be in and out." Turning around, I led Daisy in the direction of the Ex-General's office, wondering if that smarmy guy from earlier would still be sitting there, going through his papers, not knowing what was going on around him.
I looked over them all, how everyone could be looking to me for guidance and plans was bizarre. I wasn't a leader. I wasn't even a good son.
"Uh, well Daisy and I will go and get the maps and any other information we can find from the Generals office then we'll head to the infirmary on our way to the fence and pick up some medical supplies. Em and Joe, you guys can get as many weapons as you can carry, fills bags, we'll definitely need them." Once they nodded I turned to Nina and Spencer. "You guys concentrate on food and gear. Anything that could be useful grab it; torches, matches, a tent if possible, sleeping bags if not. Anything. Got it?"
They all nodded and I felt my chest tighten with nerves. If someone got hurt today it would be my fault, I was the 'Plan Man' after all, all this was my idea.
"Now be careful, we can't risk getting caught or letting them catch on to what we're doing. We'll meet by the artillery shed in an hour. Joe and Em you guys will probably get there first seeing as you're needing weapons and that's where they're stashed, once you get what you need, hide just outside the fence line. In an hour, if someones not there leave. Just leave. The more of us that get out the better, but let's not risk it."
I looked down at Daisy for a moment before nodding. "Okay." I said and turned away. Maybe they'd already escaped, maybe they were in that prison block, either way I hoped they were okay.
"Okay let's go, do you want to split up or stay together?" I asked the others, they were only just reunited, I wasn't sure how keen they'd be with splitting up again.
