"Sure. See you then." I said with a nod, before I grabbed the handle of the door closest to me and pushed it open. Inside was a dark small room, with only two beds, both of which were empty, the sheets tucked in smartly, as if waiting for a new occupant to fill it. Reaching out, I flicked the light switch, flooding the small space with a bright light. Like the corridor I'd just stepped out of, everything was white, the bed, the side tables and even the water jug that seemed to be just as empty as the room. There was only one cupboard opposite the doorway, and when I opened it, all I found was a stack of neatly folded stark white blankets. "This room looks like it's never been touched." I muttered to myself as I closed the cupboard door. There weren't any drawers to check, so I looked around the room one last time with a shake of my head, before turning of the light and leaving the room.
I raised a hand to my chest, the ache coming from my ribs making me uncomfortable and sore, but I couldn't do anything about it as I followed Daisy inside the infirmary. There was no time to stop, we were under time pressure, and the pressure of being caught, and then we were gone. Out of here and on the run, which was only going to make the pain worse. "In and out. Agreed." I muttered as the white hallway opened up to us, it's emptiness obvious as our footsteps echoed off of the closed doors we passed. "You take the left, I'll take the right. I think most of these are empty wards but we should check them anyway. Who know's where she is."
I looked past Daisy, glancing around as she told me what she saw, just to double check. Turning back to her, I nodded, hoping to God that this wasn't a trap. "Lead the way." I told her. "And don't lose that bag. We need those papers. Once we're in, we find Glenda, a new bag and you shove anything you can in that one. We've gotta be quick."
I followed behind Daisy until she came to a stop. "See anything?" I asked as I tried to peer around her without giving away our position, looking for any signs of guards or trouble. I only hoped Glenda was still inside and willing to help, she was our best bet. If we couldn't get her help, we probably wouldn't be able to get what we needed, hopefully she would forgive me for the things I had said to her in my anger and irritation.
I looked ahead to see the guards she nodded towards. "Lead the way." I said and followed her away to safety. I kept my eyes on the guards the whole time, making sure they didn't see us as we crept to our right, moving behind a nearby building.
"How far do you reckon we are from the infirmary?" I whispered to Daisy, following close behind her.
I nodded as we passed the white front desk, with the ignorant young man sitting behind it, his glasses pressed all the way up his nose as he read over his papers.
"Good idea, there are bound to be bags at the infirmary." I said as I held the door open for her and followed her out. "Although, it'll probably be more difficult to get inside, I would assume it'd be quite heavily guarded." I added once I checked no one was around to hear or see us.
"It's going to have to be enough, we haven't got time to double check, you said so your self, we're running out of time." I said as I stood up beside her and glanced around the rest of the ransacked office.
I wondered then how the others were doing, if they were being more successful than us. Hopefully they were okay.
"Come on, let's go." I said and turned back to the door.
"Shove those in here." I said as I went back to the chest with the bag, gesturing to the pile of papers Daisy had made on the floor. "And, if you're worried, then let's just put it all in. I'm sure there will be something in there." I said as sat in front of the chest and started grabbing everything I could get my hands on, stuffing it into the bag between us.
"You're right, we've been here too long." I sighed and glanced over at Daisy. "They might have a map room, they might not, but I don't think we should risk getting out of here to get it. So let's get this stuff and get out of here. We still need to go to the Infirmary." I added.
"But do you think there's a map there? I mean, that's what we came here for." I said as I looked down at the full chest. "And secondly, how are we going to carry this?" I asked, then quickly spotted a thin storage cupboard across the room. Moving away from Daisy and the chest, I went over to the cupboard and opened it up. Just what I thought, a few suit jackets hung from a bar across the top of the small space and below that was a plain black duffel bag, empty and ready for us to use.
I looked up at her and pulled the bobby pin out of the lock. "Give it a try then." I said as I stood up, stepping away from the chest to let her get closer and try the key she had just found.
"I hope it works... I don't really think my way was getting us any where." I admitted.
