Senna backed off of the dazed man squirming on the ground. The language Ruso used was familiar and understandable. It resonated in her and yet she had never heard it spoken from a man. She made quick distance away from the man, sensing the mystery and danger. This ironbristle was patient and protective. Achieving a fair distance she started prowling around her prey to flank. This man, Ruso, shot off all her warning instincts but it was clear from his position and posture that he and his ally meant violence against her friend.
All the bristles in her hide flicked out and she began growling as menacingly as possible at the two. She would pace behind them cautiously and wait for an opening, glaring specifically at Ruso.
--
Rem marveled at how reliable Senna was. Highwaymen had tried in the past to kill him but these two weren't simple thugs, they had an agenda or a goal. Were they here for Sulfrax? Were they here to kill Rem himself? This violence made a storm of uncertainty. These men had not made their objectives clear and they tried to cover the truth as to their intentions. Not some travelers lost on the way. Ruso and Florence had to be hit men.
Senna however successful in her surprise attack had been surprised herself, even spooked. That Ruso's incoherent bellowing could startle a beast clearly bigger and possibly more dangerous than he was troubled him. She even backed off, it was clear that his companion had lost her mettle against the bigger of the brigands. What did he do?
There was still ringing in his ears but he ignored it as he focused on what was about to happen. If this Ruso could intimidate Senna so easily it was clear who Rem needed to worry about. Rem sidestepped toward Sulfrax as he used his overwhelming offensive power against Ruso. "Master, finish the little one if you can. " Rem pointed toward the thicket of trees Senna had charged out of mere moments before. Hopeful that his enemy still had issues hearing, considering he himself was still a bit dazed, he continued. "We won't last against this adversary if we don't make distance. They're trained for close slaughter." He peered warily at his enemy. "If we can make it to the trees we may just have a clear shot. I'll buy us some time."
Rem steadied the staff in his right hand and raised his left forward, fingers spaced apart and palm down. The energy that he focused into his hand felt right, he was ready. Rem spoke his words of power. "Unro dagoon." A mist of glowing amber drifted from his outstretched hand. The hue of the ground changed taking on a darker tone.
That was the fun thing about diversifying your tricks. Your adversaries would never know what something did until they triggered it. The ground stretching forward toward the assassins turned into a viscous and difficult to traverse mud.
Rem turned toward the thicket and readied himself to help Sulfrax run if he needed it. Hopefully he wouldn't be stubborn and try to stay to fight them. Their powers, though more clear now were still unknown. Being outsmarted now meant death.
