FTFY. After all, Dark Souls should get some credit. Anyway, I'd imagine not all souls (aka memories) are equal. Some of them are more powerful than others, right?

Naturally. Those that hold the most emotion are most likely to manifest as memeria.
Hmm... As I mentioned, this concept of mine is rather dependent on memories also changing and being added and replaced rather than being only removed - meaning that rather than 'remove one or several with each death', the result of death would be closer to 'remove one memory, alter two more existing ones, add three new ones since the last awakening which may be either real, partly real, stolen, or utter bogus'. Also, everything not listed will be gone, should they die. Each awakening would be a "fresh" start, so to speak.
The physical changes would be fairly gradual (an inch of height, mild alteration of facial features, scars disappearing and appearing, more or less musculature, eye or hair color - while they might become something else entirely after a hundred or thousand cycles, they definitely won't after a mere couple of deaths), and somewhat reflect the changes to memories (and self).
They started out as normal human, but might not be entirely so anymore - after some (or some dozens of) cycles, anyway. Essentially, once they will have no recollection of being human or amongst them, either in life or this undeath, they would probably become a monster of some description. Not 'empty', but with only new, stolen, and bogus memories. Mad...? Depends what they ended up with and your definition of mad. Hostile? Same deal.
So ... yeah. Perhaps not exactly 'played character as intended' as I expressed originally, but nevertheless one which came to mind when I read the opening post and I - if allowed - would love to try out now that I have the concept built up (it is a rather vocal and persistent concept, too). Should I begin writing the character sheet, or at least the memory sets, to give you a better feel of what I want to do with them?

And certainly good to know that absences, when announced early enough, would not be an issue.

My only concern with a concept like this is the issue that somebody who simply replaces memories upon death becomes immune to the phenomena of becoming empty, and as such, a character having what is essentially an infinite supply of random memories wouldn't fit quite so well with the setting. The physical changes, I have no issue with, same with the extreme memory jumbling upon death to facilitate it, but realistically nothing should be capable of coming out of more than 6 or 7 cycles with their mind in tact. Perhaps this character has already gathered a lot of false memories, and, due to their unstable nature, cause the erratic personality and physicality of the character; the memories could alter with each death, but this would still fade with each cycle.
Hmm. Interesting.

But what about the opposite? Is there any feasible way for a character to regain their own memories? Is there anything in this crapsack world that helps?

Of couuuurse :)
I have an idea.

But, as with many ideas, this one comes with some doubts.

One of them, the more boring and mundane one, is that of simply time - from mid-April to early May, I'll be out of country, and since it is work rather than vacation, I may just come to be that I'll either be only able to cram in a short reply or two, or not be able to reply at all. Would that be something you can work with? (Alternatively, would this RP be open for applications later on?) What do you expect the average turnover for posts to be in general? I personally only dare to promise roughly one post per week to take account of all possible times of excess preoccupation. At worst, I will still post once in two weeks.

The other doubts are more related to the RP itself, and the world it takes place within. I have a very distinct type of character in mind, as well as a potential progression through subsequent awakenings, should any come to occur in the story (naturally depends on whether said character of mine gets themselves killed or not ... I'm actually rather inclined to start out with my character's second or third awakening, not the first - but I fear it might go too far from the intended purpose of the RP, so I'm not sure whether I could actually do it).
Without revealing too much, I'd focus less on hopelessness and fear (not all people are the same, and thus won't react even remotely the same, either) and more on transformation, for the lack of a better term. Progression. Would that eventually lead to a monster like those described wandering the planes - who might not be as mindless as implied - or something else entirely, not even I know yet. It all depends on the IC and what said character is subjected to.
Now, some integral questions. Is it possible for the physical form to change from one awakening to the next? Same - is it possible to the personality to alter in ways it simply could not in living beings? Do beings generally retain the memories from previous awakenings, or are they "wiped" after each? I would like my character to only retain some (brief scenes or images of whatever left the strongest impressions on them in IC), and for those to mingle with the "living" memories and perhaps contort them, slowly replacing rather than erasing them. I'll also hint that not all memories may necessarily be true to begin with, but rather snippets of dreams or imaginations - even the human brain simply makes things up all the time without us realizing it, after all... Finally, would it be feasible for me to start out with a non-first awakening (to ... further along things a bit)?

...Also, what is a "mer"? I do pardon myself if it is a silly and ignorant question.

Those things said and asked, should it be at all possible for me to fit in my character as I intended and envisioned them, I'll put together a CS by next Monday the latest.

To address your first question: yes, I can indeed work with your down-time. I understand that all people have different circumstances and are able to post at different frequencies. I'm sure we can find a way to explain the absence of your character during that time. If you wished to present an application after being away, that would also be agreeable. It really depends on what would be preferable for you. I think it would be bad to essentially lock the RP to new cast members after the initial influx. You've got to keep it fresh, right?

Like Ashgan already mentioned, his/her character is already past the state of first awakening, and I imagine several other characters are too. The Awakening field in the CS is a historical recount of the character's first moments, and is no way indicative of the actual amount of time any given character has been trapped in the world. That is a fact that is left to each player's design.
Okay, so memories, awakening, and reawakening happens in a couple of stages that I, so far, have left mostly to imagination. A newly awakened character will have a whole bunch of memories intact because they are the closest to their world, and every subsequent 'death' strips characters of their memories. This leads to them getting madder and madder at this disconnection to themselves. When all memories have been depleted, they become 'Empty', just wandering husks of people who will kill just to attain the memories of some other creature so they can once again feel like somebody. If an empty soul is killed, they will reawaken again, but their reawakening is not like before, as they have no memories to sustain them. From here they begin to deform and change – they become the myriad of creatures that walk the land, depending on who they were, of course. From this point, one cannot revert themselves back to their human form, and memories gathered through the act of killing –once they have become these horrific creatures– simply serves to temporarily sate an otherwise insatiable hunger.
Whether or not your character could 'change forms' between awakenings depends really on how drastic these changes were.

And you're right, after a time, not all memories will be true. You will eventually find yourself with a score of false memories, taken from others (on purpose, or accidentally) that will seem real but do not seem to fit in with the other, true memories your character retains. You could start in IC as far along this cycle as you saw fit.

Mer, as Ashgan pointed out, refers to other humanoid races. It was only really added in to cover the RP in case anybody wanted to play a non-human, but I fully expect the cast to be 95-100% Human.
Alright, looking good. I'll be looking to set up the IC within a day or two, depending on how long the rest of the sheets and applicants take to be compeleted to a workable level.
What about me? D:

Wait i just realised what you're doing oops

Character finished, I think

Sounds good to me, stick her in the character tab when you're happy with the final character.

@Komamisa Looks good so far, just send a little reminder my way when you finish Oblivion.

@Ink Blood Loving Rook, take him to the character tab immediately. That is an order ;)

@DJAtomika Yes, yes. The Jester is a thing of beauty. Yesssss. YESSSSSS.
You're not alone, this is my first roleplay since a hefty absence. Maybe we can help each other get back onto the swing of it! But yeah, i've always found the lest generic settings can bring out creativity in people, especially if you force them away from the norm.
"Sanity is the Surety of the Soul."

Application sheet coming up. I love what I see and don't have any questions to ask so I can hop right into making something. This entire premise is a thing of beauty.

Why thank you, I've found it to be a somewhat different setting to most RPs. It should be fun :)
Glad to have you on board, though! Looking forward to reading your sheet.

The Turncloak Blade King
§

S t a t u s
Dead / Unknown

Here is a Man who shows not his face as he walks, and walk long and far does he. His armour is heavy and stifling, yet it phases him not. Few are graced with conversation with the Turncloak Blade, and fewer still are given the honour of traveling alongside him. He seems to have come from no place, and his memories are all but faded. Some say he is a wandering husk, ready to strike out against those who approach on a whim. Others disagree and say he is a gentle heart contained within an irremovable clad of cold steel. His halberd seems to be coated fresh with the blood of a new creature every day, whether the blood is of human or otherwise origin is not known to many.
Perhaps you have caught the glimpse of his footsteps amidst the dust, or perhaps you have even seen his suit glistening in the horizon, befallen by the thin, wintery light. He seems to have purpose and direction. Those wise souls who have been granted the chance to trace his steps would do well to take the opportunity. But do not anger this hulk of a Man, and do not push him. His blade hungers for the kill, and he is only so inclined to disregard that desire.
