Icon lowered his head as he drove his body through the small, single pilot alien craft. The ensuing sound which was reminiscent of a freight train colliding with a tractor trailer was deafening. It was a sound that one felt as opposed to heard. The cobalt and silver clad hero quickly glanced over his shoulder just as the wrecked craft crashed down into an empty park below. He made a quarter turn midair, then raced toward another craft. His heart pounded as he raced toward the oncoming craft, feeling a slight pang of guilt from the satisfaction he felt at the destruction of the last ship, however, he shook that feeling off in time to unleash an optic blast which utterly obliterated the oncoming vessel.

“Take it easy Flyboy, you're making the rest of us look bad.” He heard Radiance say. Though their com devices had been fried in the EMP that helped bring down the massive war machine, Icon was thankful that his enhanced hearing made the coms obsolete, for him anyhow. He looked back at Radiance and gave her a brief grin, however, it was fleeting.

The large cigar shaped ship, which seemed to serve the same purpose as a navy battleship cast a long shadow over the city, blocking out the sun as it took a position over the Lost Haven Harbor just off of the coast of Little Ulster. From his position, Icon could see movement on the craft itself. Parts in motion, pieces sliding in and out, revealing multiple batteries of armaments, all pointing toward Lost Haven.

They're going to raze the city. Icon thought to himself as he realized just how far the invaders would go to protect the Purifier from any external threats.

“Not today, you son of a bitch.” Icon said as he rocketed toward the massive ship.

Lyger wasn't going to let the others have all the fun. While he couldn't fly, and thus was more or less useless when it came to dealing with the alien fighter ships that had descended upon Lost Haven, he was determined to get to that tower and find a way to bring it down. The sudden arrival of the tower had really shaken Flux, and she seemed sure that the emergence of the tower, this “Purifier” meant that the fight was lost. But he'd been down before, he'd seen the heroes of the world come together and pull off miracles...and he hoped that they had at least one more left, because if the world was ever in need of a miracle, it was now.

Lyger fired a grappling line from his wrist gauntlet and ascended to the rooftop of a nearby building. Once he made it to the roof of the building, he ran, jumped and bounded from rooftop to rooftop. His instincts had proven correct, he had run into no alien resistance until he reached the sixth building. A lone Arlaaekan crouched at the far ledge of the building, looking through the scope of his long barreled blaster. Before the alien sniper even knew that he was there, Lyger grabbed the alien's head and drove him face first into the stone ledge, then bounded away before the alien's limp body hit the rooftop.

It wasn't long before he came across more of the alien butchers. Just ahead, on the next roof he was able to see a pair of heavily armed alien gunmen. Unlike the sniper which he had so easily dispatched, these aliens were not worried about discretion. In fact, the weaponry that they carried looked to be designed to cause as much damage in as little time as possible. Aside from the now familiar Arlaaekan blaster rifles, the pair also carried what looked to be the Arlaaekan equivalent of rocket launchers. Lyger quickened his pace, and as he neared the pair of aliens, he jumped toward them, hitting the first armed marauder square in the back, driving the air from his lungs and sending him crashing face first on the rooftop. Before the stunned alien could finish letting out a wheezed breath, Lyger had turned his attention to his partner. The feline hero struck at the alien with a barage of open and closed fisted strikes which kept the alien off balance, before shattering his left knee with a sudden well placed thrust kick. The alien gunman crumled to the ground and clutched his leg shouting out in pain. Looking down at the injured alien, Lyger silenced his cries with a single punch, shattering his jaw in the process.

Without missing a beat, he bounded to the next rooftop where he came face to face with a pair of armored aliens.Unlike the others, they were not taken by surprise. As he rantoward the pair of aliens, he could hear them speaking to one another, and though he could not understand the words being spoken, he understood their meaning. They were frantic, almost in a panic as he approached. Even as they leveled their weapons at him, they did not seem as sure of themselves as they might otherwise be. Lyger anticipated their reaction, dodging to the left and then to the right as plasma bolts fly past him. Lyger dodged another volley of enemy fire before leaping towards the pair of alien soldiers. His foot connected with the firsts just under his chin, sending blood and tooth fragments into the air. He had barely touched the ground before he turned and drove his elbow into the temple of the other, a shot which staggered the alien, but did not topple him. Lyger did not relent; he struckthe alien with a series of quick kicks and punches, be fore landing a knife edged thrust to the invader's throat which finally put the alien down.

Suddenly, just as Lyger was getting ready to move onto the next rooftop, something hit him.

Hard.

The impact knocked him off his feet, sending him into a nearby electrical junction box. The collision crumpled the large green metal box sending sparks shooting into the sky around it. Lyger sat hunched over against the ruined junction box as he tried to recover from the shock of the sudden attack. His eyes darted around looking for the source of the attack as he tried to regain the breath that had been knocked out of him. However, much to his surprise, there was nothing. Then there was a shimmer in the air, and a form began to materialize, like a ghost making itself visible, right in front of him. This Arlaaekan was different than the others. This alien was much larger than the others, standing at about seven feet tall. It was an imposing figure, and for an instant he could hear his father's voice in his head, describing the bruiser of an alien as only Jack Porter could.

“Man, that fucking thing is built like a brick shit house.”

As Lyger would soon discover, his attacker was not only large and powerful, but he was also incredibly fast. Before he could get to his feet, the large Arlaaekan was on him, his massive hands gripping his face and head, much like someone palming a basketball, and yanked him up, and then slammed him back down to the rooftop, again knocking the wind out of him. Lygerinstinctively rolled over to his stomach and forced himself up on his knees, however, before he was able to get to his feet, the alien brute took a bounding step and landed a well placed kick to his medsection, a kick that sent Lyger hurtling through the air, landing in a lump about a dozen feet away.

I can't keep this up, this son of a bitch is going to kill me. Lyger thought to himself as he forced himself to his feet. The kick had actually been a blessing in disguise, it had given his the separation that he needed to gather his bearings somewhat. Just then, the bruiser charged at Lyger. Using his cat like reflexes, the hero was able to jump out of the way, barely escaping what wouldcertainly have been a catastrophic impact. The large alien lunged again, and again, Lyger was able to dodge the attack, but not before landing a strike of his own, a hard open palm strike to the alien's temple. This staggered the brute, sending him backwards several steps while he tried to clear his head. However, Lyger didn't give him the chance. He dove in toward the brute, getting as close as he could to his massive opponent. Once Lyger was in close, too close for the stunned brute to strike, he unleased a series of knee strikes, to the alien's midsection, followed by a flurry of punches, forearm, and elbow strikes which battered its he and neck.

Though the alien brute had been staggered, it still stood. Lyger jumped away from his larger opponent, who had recovered slightly from the hero's assault. The alien let out a gutteral roar and rushed towards Lyger, who just like before dove out of the way, easily avoiding the charge. However, in the brutes rage, he did not notice that this time Lyger had been standing in front of the damaged electrical junction box. The alien brute slammed his fist into the box, sending hundreds of thousands of volts of electricity coursing through its body. The alien cried out in pain for several long moments, that to both combatants seemed to be an eternity. Finally, mercifully, the alien brute fell silent as its body slumped to the ground.

Icon counted three smaller alien craft coming towards him from the West, and another four from the North. Icon veered toward the first three ships, which began firing plasma bolts at him as he approached. Icon took immediate evasive action, barrel rolling to the left and returning fire with an optic blast which nearly vaporized the first craft on impact. Icon lowered his head as he flew through the resulting fireball, slamming into the second craft which had been trailing close behind the first. Then, with a quick turn of his head and another optic blast, the cobalt and silver clad hero felled the third of the Westwardly alien fighter crafts.

Before Icon could look to get a position on the other four fighter crafts, a plasma bolt struck him from behind and above. The sudden attack was painful, and nearly knocked the wind out of him, he quickly realized that he had been on the receiving end of far worse. Suddenly he stopped his forward momentum and hovered in place. The first of the alien craft was moving to fast to register the fact that its target was no longer in motion. Icon reached back and drove a fist into the bow of the craft, sending a mixture of sparks and metal debris into the air an instant before the entire fighter exploded from the collision. The second fighter made its approach, firing multiple plasma bolts at Icon in rapid succession. Two of which hit him, however, Lost Haven's hero was able to steel himself against the incoming volley, and return fire with an optic blast which reduced the fighter craft to little more than a fireball falling from the sky. The two remaining fighters were eliminated in short order. Icon circled around and went in pursuit of the third craft, firing off a pair of optic blasts, one which sailed just to the left of the fighter, however, the second clipped the craft's wing, sending it into a tailspin where it crashed into Lost Haven Harbor. The final craft made its approach, firing hot plasma at the hero in rapid succession, however, Icon easily flew out of the way, avoiding the enemy fire. Icon circled around and flew through the alien fighter craft, sending the fiery wreckage crashing to the waters below.

Icon hovered in midair for a moment, quickly looking all around for any more of the pesky alien fight craft when a massive bolt of energy whizzed past his head on its way toward the city below, where it struck one of the city's skyscrapers. The building's ensuing collapse reduced it to rubble.

“NO!” Icon cried out as several more of the energy bolts rained down on the city. Icon spun toward the source of the attack, and came face to face with the large cigar shaped vessel, its cannons bared on the city below.

Bill Hoyt watched the events unfold in the city in horror with the rest of the employees who had remained in the office at Winstone International. As a member of the board of directors, he could have remained in his office and watched the events from there. However, he had never seen anything like this in all his years, and he didn't know if he, or anyone else for that matter would live to see another day. He started his career as a front desk receptionist for Alexa Winstone's grandfather over forty years ago. He worked his way up through the company to Executive Vice President, a position that he was so proud to see Alexa, who he had seen as a daughter of sorts, take over when he was again promoted to President.

He had sacrificed so much for Winstone International. The company had occupied so much of his life that he never had time for a wife or family. So he looked at his employees as his family. There was nothing that he wouldn't do for them, so if this truly was the end, he wanted to be right here among his family.

He hoped that somehow the world's heroes would again pull off a miracle and save the day. He had seen them save the world from Dr. Diplodoc's meta domes, he watched as they defeated the Hounds of Humanity and their space laser. He was also there when they repelled the actual forces of Hell and sent the demonic forces back to where they belong during D-Day. But somehow, this felt different, and he didn't know if the newly minted Guardians, even with help from the rest of the world's heroes would be enough this time. He still had a sliver of hope. However, that hope quickly evaporated when he saw the massive ball of energy, which to him appeared to be almost as bright as the sun, coming right toward him.

The impact eradicated everything, and everyone in the immediate impact zone. Metal beams twisted and melted, and the entire building trembled. Then, Winstone International, the third tallest building in Lost Haven cried out as it fell to Earth.

Radiance waited for her opponent to get closer. She had already taken down several of Arlaaekan flight suits, which in a way reminded her of the suit of armor worn by the Iron Knight, though they were not quite as stylish. The purple and black suits also seemed to be quite susceptible to electricity, which she found to be exceptionally convenient. So she waited, and when the suited alien got close enough, she wrangled the speeding suit of armor and released a powerful electrical discharge, which fried the suit's flight system, causing it to quickly lose altitude until it crashed to the city below.

She didn't have time to celebrate, as a bright bolt of energy lit up the sky as it raced toward the city. Then another, and another, each impacting buildings throughout Lost Haven, each target collapsing moments after impact. She wanted to be sick as she looked over the destruction in the city below. Then, as she surveyed the destruction, an icy chill ran down her spine as she saw the pile of rubble that sat where Winstone International had once stood.

Icon slammed shoulder first into the large, cigar shaped vessel just to the left of one of the massive cannons that adorned the side of the craft. He reached over and tore into the cannon's housing and yanked. He strained to pull the cannon free from the side of the craft. The metal groaned and whined in protest until finally, Icon separated the cannon from the ship. Then, like an oversized baseball bat, Icon swung the cannon, connecting with the cannon housed next to it. Black smoke poured out of the side of the ship as Icon moved onto the next cannon.

He flew around the ship, hitting each of the cannons with an optic blast, reducing each to smoldering craters in the ship's hull. Once he had taken out the cannons, Icon moved above the ship, only to find that it too was heavily armed. The ship's defenses began firing, rounds of hot plasma flew past him as he dodged to the left, and then again to the right. Once he was again over top of the ship, he let loose with a massive optic blast as he flew toward the ship. He maintained the onslaught as he crashed into the ship. Metal crunched as and surprised Arlaaekans cried out in shock as he drove himself all the way through the ship, emerging from the bottom of the hull. Thick black smoke poured from the ship's wounded hull, but Icon was not done. He flew along the bottom of the craft, releasing a sustained optic blast as he went. Once he had moved past the ship, he looked back just in time to see the craft separate into two halves, bout of which crashed down into the harbor below.

Icon took a deep breath as he watched the remains of the ship slip below the waves. With the immediate threat taken care of, Icon turned his attention to the massive black tower that now stood prominently over the Lost Haven as he raced back to the city.

Jen Harris sat with her knees curled to her chest as she pressed herself up against the living room wall of the apartment that she shared with her twin brother Jalen. Fear had gripped her from the moment that the alien ships had first appeared in the skies over Lost Haven. That fear only strengthened its grip with each explosion that sounded in the city, and became almost unbearable as she could hear the screams of panicked Lost Havenites as they tried to escape the invading hordes. However, those screams no longer only emanated from the streets, but now from the hallways of their apartment building. The sounds of what could only be described as blaster fire from some sort of laser gun resounded off the hallway walls, as did the sounds of running and screaming.

“They're here!” Jen mouthed to her brother as panic began to rise up in her in a way it never had before.

“It's gonna be alright.” Jalen's voice came called out, not verbally, but from within her mind. She looked to her brother, who was twelve minutes her senior, who gave her a reassuring nod. A sense of calm suddenly washed over her, and for a moment Jen thought that her brother just might be right.

Then the sound of strange voices and even more blaster fire came from the hallway, as did the sounds of footsteps coming toward the doorway to their apartment, and once again Jen Harris could feel the panic begin to rise up in her chest.

Ground Zero

The Guardians and their allies stood and watched as the massive tower, now taller than the Chambers Building, dominated the Lost Haven skyline. The Purifier was like nothing any of them had ever seen, save for the Arlaaekan fugitive Flux. The tower was a solid structure made of a sleek obsidian material. The glowing orange-red light at the top could almost remind one of the infamous All Seeing Eye from Tolkien's works.

Flux's words rang in Icon's head as he looked up at the ominous structure.

“That...is the end of the world.”

“We've heard that before.-” Lyger said gruffly. “-How do we destroy it?”

“I don't know.” Flux said before pausing briefly. “Nobody's ever destroyed one before.”

“Flux, what exactly are we looking at?” Icon asked.

“That's a Purifier.-” Flux said, pausing as she looked at the massive matte black tower with a mixture of awe and unadulterated terror. “It's the Autocrat's ultimate weapon. Once it's charged up and it activates, it releases an energy wave that is specifically designed to eradicate any organic being within its blast radius without Arlaaekan DNA.” Flux explained.

“How long do we have?” Icon asked.

“Not long, maybe ten or fifteen minutes.” Flux told him.

“That's all the time in the world.” Radiance said with an uncertain grin.

“Right, I suggest we take the fight to that thing now.” Lyger said.

Suddenly, a long shadow cast the Guardians in darkness as a large object blocked out the sun as it passed over the city. The heroes looked to the object, a large capital ship which had come to a stop between Ground Zero and the Purifier.

“Alright guys, looks like we have a fight on our hands.” Radiance said as dozens of smaller craft, and what looked to be men in flight suits emerged from the massive craft like angry hornets from a nest.

She crept through the hallways of the apartment building, ducking around corners, doing her best to remain undetected by the teal skinned aliens. This was not how Haze had envisioned her return to Lost Haven. She had come back to warn Icon about some troubling developments that she had uncovered, however, the apparent end of the world made those discoveries seem completely irrelevant. Shortly before her comms went dead, she had been alerted to a group of the alien invaders who were acting as an extermination squad, going door to door and killing anyone they happened upon.

It didn't take her long to find the alien death squad. She had been given a general location before the comms went down, all she had to do was listen for the shooting...and the screams. She had made her way toward the commotion, and much to her dismay, found that she already may have been too late. She saw at least a half a dozen heavily armed aliens strolling through the smoke filled hallway of the apartment building. Almost instantly, she was nearly overcome by the smoke. Her eyes burned and teared, and she found it incredibly hard to breathe, so she knew she had to move fast to save everyone that she could, although, in the back of her mind she wasn't sure that there was anyone left to save. She moved on the first alien fast, vanishing in a cloud of mist and reappearing directly behind him with her blade at the ready. She slit the alien's throat before he even knew that she was behind him, then slipped a hand over his mouth to muffle his cry.

The second alien gasped in surprise when she suddenly appeared directly in front of him, however, before he was able to bring his weapon to bare, or even let off a shout, she slashed him across the throat with her blade, then across his chest, then in one fluid motion she brought the blade around and sunk it deep in his chest. She repeated her attacks twice more, and another pair of invaders fell.

She continued down the hall, until she saw a pair of the aliens attempting to get into an apartment at the end of the hall with murderous intent. She vanished in a cloud of smoke and when she reappeared, she met the first of the aliens with a swift kick in the chest, knocking it back several steps before she spun and drover her blade into the side of the second alien's neck. Blue-black blood spurted from the wound as the alien grabbed his neck and stumbled backward, where her slumped to the ground against the wall. The first alien had recovered enough to level his weapon at her and fire an energy blast, however the blast sailed harmlessly through where she had stood, as she had again vanished and reappeared behind him, burying her blade in the middle of his back.

Her lungs burned as she kicked the door of the apartment in, causing the two teens who were cowering inside to cry out in terror. Fortunately, unlike the hallway the apartment itself was not filled with smoke, the heavy fire doors had done their job and provided some degree of protection, and for that Haze was grateful as she drew a deep breath. She looked down at the two teens, who were still frightened, but visibly relieved that she was not one of the teal skinned terrors.

“We don't really have time for introductions. But if you want to get out of here alive, I recommend you come with me, now.”

Working on some stuff, and I've got some stuff in the works that I'm excited about

Icon watched as S.T.R.I.K.E secured The Outsider in restraints and began loading him into their prisoner transport vehicle. Suddenly, the ground shook as the massive battle tank was split in two and then exploded. The explosion blew out windows in the buildings surrounding the battlefield, and knocked a number of S.T.R.I.K.E. Agents, and heroes off of their feet.

Nice job guys. Icon thought to himself as he gazed upon the wreckage of the alien battle tank.

"By the Gods...my people did this." a familiar voice saidas she surveyed the damage, sadness and anger tinged her voice.

“Flux?” Icon said as he turned toward his ally. [b] “What do you mean, your people?” Icon asked.

"Like them, I am of Arlaaek." She said remorsefully. "I had heard tales of the ferocity of the Arlaaekan military, but I have never seen it until today. It's...horrifying. " She said.

“It is. But now it's time to--” Icon was suddenly cut off by the shouting of several S.T.R.I.K.E. Agents approaching them, led by yet another familiar face, Marcus Ryder.

“Icon, step away from the alien, we're taking her into custody.” Ryder ordered the hero.

“No, I don't think you are Agent Ryder. She's with us.” Icon told the agents.

“The hell she is, she's one of them. She's coming with us.” Ryder said he stepped toward Icon and Flux.

“If you want her, you'll have to go through me.” Icon said.

“That's how you want to play this?” Ryder asked incredulously.

“It is. So stand down. This is a waste of time, and this war isn't over yet. So we can argue about her fate, which is an argument you won't win, or we can work together to end this thing.”

“Fine. For now, but we WILL continue this conversation later.” Ryder said angrily.

“I'll be looking forward to it.” Icon said as he turned to Flux, “Let's get to work.” Icon said and with that, he and Flux rejoined the other Guardians near the wreckage of the battle tank.

The Autocrat sat alone in his quarters aboard the Arlaaekan mother ship. There, he reviewed reports from the battles raging across the planet. For the most part, the Grand Arlaaekan Army had easily overwhelmed the planet's defenses. Just as he expected, total victory was within grasp. However, there had been pockets of resistance which had proven to be troublesome. The cities of Lost Haven and Pacific Point in particular had proven to be more of a problem than has advisors had thought, as well as Paris and London, and then there was the country known as Charonia which also proved to be an issue.

Suddenly the doors to the Autocrat's chambers slid open, and Admiral Keelan entered. The Autocrat had known the Admiral for years, in fact, it was the Autocrat who hand picked Keelan for this post, and together they had conquered countless worlds. However, as Keelan approached him, the Autocrat noted that there was something different about his Admiral. He seemed less sure than usual, and as he approached he did some pensively. Indeed, the Autocrat knew that the Admiral came bearing bad news. The Autocrat turned his head slightly to meet Keelan's gaze and let out a sigh.

“What is it Admiral? You look troubled.” The Autcrat said coldly.

“There have been some...troubling events in the Lost Haven theater.” The Admiral admitted.

“Go on.” The Autocrat said with a disapproving sigh.

“The resistance on the ground has taken The Outsider, and destroyed the War Reaper. The forces in Lost Haven have been routed by the so called heroes. Among them, is the Staff-wielder...as well as the fugitive daughter of Arkaaek.”

“Hmph...interesting.-” The Autocrat grunted as he got to his feet. The towering despot looked down at his Admiral. “Perhaps we have allowed this game to go on too long. Deploy the Purifier, we will burn those who would oppose us from the face of the planet.”

“Forgive me, but do you think it's wise to deploy the Purifier in the heart of the conflict?”

“You worry too much.” The Autocrat said, his tone lightening ever so slightly. “The heroes of this planet have fought valiantly, but The Purifier will be a monument to their greatest failure.”

The heroes on the ground gathered near the burning remains of the battle tank, although the tide had seemed to turn in their favor, there was an unsettling silence, almost as if they were waiting for the next shoe to drop. And as if on cue, something entered Earth's atmosphere, a trail of fire followed it as it landed only several blocks away from where they stood. Whatever the object was, the impact caused the ground to shake for several moments.

“Well, that can't be good.” Radiance said as the they looked in the direction of the impact area. Suddenly there was a loud sound, similar to the sound of a locomotive roaring past. And from the impact site, a single, matte black tower began to rise skyward.

“Definitely not good.” Lyger confirmed as they all looked upon the massive tower which now dominated the Lost Haven skyline.

"On no..." Flux said almost silently, but even so, Icon could still hear the terror in her voice.

“Flux? What is that thing?”

"That...is the end of the world."

“Let's finish this.” Icon said as he took several steps toward toward the approaching Outsider, with Terra Firma flanking to the left. Icon left his feet, and hovering several inches off the ground he launched himself at the Outsider. Lowering his shoulder, he barreled into the invader, knocking him back several steps. Terra Firma, not far behind, tagged the Outsider with a hard right hand, which knocked the Outsider back into Icon's fist, who then hammered the Outsider back to Terra, together they traded a combination of simultaneous blows, to which the Outsider could only stagger in between as he was hammered into place as the heroes pummeled him from behind and the front. Outsider tried to fight back, but his strikes failed to make contact as Icon and Terra Firma continued their assault. Finally, Icon struck the villain down with a back hand just as Terra Firma spun around and let loose a downward fireball which exploded upwards, shooting the outsider high through the air, where he crashed into the side of a nearby building, slid down the brick façade, then finally coming to a rest, slumping against the building.

Suddenly, there was a loud roar and a rush of wind. Icon couldn't believe his eyes as he watched as a bizarre bone dragon creature cut a swath through the alien invaders as it moved across the battlefield. He didn't know what he was looking at, and he was fairly certain that he had never seen anything quite like that before in his life, but he was thankful that whatever it was, it seemed to be on their side.

“Well, that's not something you see every day...-” Icon said as he watched the dragon move out of sight. “At least...unless you're us.”

Suddenly, Icon's attention is brought back to the battlefield as a series of explosions shook the ground. Frantically, he looked around and quickly found the source of the explosions- the massive battle tank had begun firing indiscriminately. The tank's explosive rounds impacted apartment buildings and businesses within the immediate area. Then, they seemed to find a new target.

No! Icon thought to himself as he came to the realization that the tank had spotted a group of civilians and journalists that had taken shelter just outside the lines of battle.

Icon lifted off his feet in preparation to engage the tank himself, when he noticed movement out of the corner of his eye, only to find that the Outsider had gotten to his feet.

“You take the tank, I'll take care of this.” Icon said to Terra Firma as he motioned toward the Outsider.

In a flash, Icon rushed toward the Outsider, who threw several wild punches trying to fend off the cobalt and silver clad hero. However, Icon easily avoided contact with the Outsider's fists, while hitting home with an upper cut of his own. The impact sent the Outsider skywardseveral stories, and as he began his descent back toward the earth, Icon caught him in mid air, and with a singular motion, he hurled the villain back toward the sky.

Icon raced behind the Outsider, catching up to him and delivering a series of earth shattering strikes to his head, each blow knocking the Outsider higher and higher into the sky. Icon again caught up to the Outsider's hurtling body and reached out, grabbing him around the waist, all while altering his course toward the ground. Icon sped up as he raced toward the earth. He suddenly stopped short as he reached the rooftops of the city's skyline, and released the Outsider, sending him crashing into the pavement several hundred feet below.

As Icon descended toward the ground, there was a sudden flurry of activity as military vehicles, troop carriers, and a number of black, unmarked SUV's raced into the area, some of which surrounded the crater that the Outsider created when he crashed into the square.

Nice of you boys to show up. Icon thought to himself as he rejoined his allies on the ground.

Lyger's heel connected with the jaw on one of the alien invaders, sending a mixture of blue/green blood, teeth and spit flying from the alien's mouth. He had barely reset his feet on the ground before leaping toward another of the teal skinned marauders. With a flurry of quick strikes, he felled his target before turning his attention to yet another.

“We can't keep this up all day, they just keep coming.” Lyger said into the communicator.

“Well, do you have any suggestions?” Radiance's voice came back through the device.

“At the moment, no. Just keep fighting.” Lyger said with resignation in his voice. It was all they could do. They had to fight, the entire world was counting on them. However, doubt crept into his mind, and he couldn't help but to wonder if this time, they were completely out of their depth.

“Right.” Radiance said in agreement, even as she watched even more of the teal skinned invaders pour into the battlefield. As the invaders attempted to overrun the square, Radiance dug her heels into the ground and braced herself for the incoming horde.

Icon rolled to a stop in the middle of the street. His head was ringing and though he wanted nothing more than to get up and get back into the fight, he just couldn't.

At least, not yet.

The strange being that had attacked him was different from the others. He had even hinted at being human, but regardless of where this man had come from, he had hit harder than the hero had ever been hit before.

Icon tried to get to his feet, however, his legs wouldn't cooperate. He mentally berated himself, tried to force himself up, but the fact was, for the first time in a long time, he was hurt- and he didn't know if he could do it.

I just need a minute to... he thought to himself, however, he realized that he wouldn't be getting the time he needed. His attacker had emerged through the hole that Icon had punched through the front of the building when the man had sent him crashing through store front. Icon dug down deep and forced himself up. He had gotten up to a knee when he became aware of an outstretched hand.

"I'm backing you up! Are you hurt?" Terra Firma said as he aided Icon to his feet.

“I'll live.- Icon said. “-Let's take him together. But be careful, he's stronger than he looks.”

They were running out of time. Earth, was running out of time. The Guardians knew that they were facing an uphill battle, a fact that made more clear by the sheer number of alien invaders that were rushing in, threatening to overtake the super team and those who stood beside them in battle.

“Icon's down.” Lyger's voice came over the Guardian's communicator.

“What?” Radiance gasped as she frantically looked around the battlefield, finally spotting him as he was helped to his feet by Terra Firma. Though she was relieved to see that her love was alright, she found a new resolve begin to form in the pit of her stomach. She turned her attention back to the waves of invaders that were rushing onto the scene, and she unleashed her power in a way that she had never done before, and in a way that she had not been aware that she was able to until that very moment.

The very ground shook as the sound of thunder clapped , nearly on top of all of the combatants in the square. Then what only could be described as a wall of living lightning came crashing down upon the alien invaders, moving throughout the battlefield as she commanded it, avoiding the Guardians and their allies, while decimating the alien hordes. The entire display only lasted for several moments, but when it finally subsided, the battlefield was littered with teal skinned bodies. Most were motionless, though some were writhing in pain from the massive jolt that they had just sustained.

“Holy Shit.” Lyger said into the communicator. “I didn't know you could do that.”

“Neither did I.” Radiance said as she saw that their victory was a fleeting one. “Get ready, we've got incoming.”
