Alexandra Rosalie Thorne is the granddaughter of Rupert Thorne, a corrupt politician and crimelord in Gotham City, and the niece of Commissioner Jim Gordon. Alexandra’s mother, Jocelyn Gordon, was a wild child with a heart of gold, and her father, Antonio Thorne, was a smooth talking gangster working for his father.
Jocelyn’s familial ties to Jim Gordon, the only cop in Gotham who couldn’t be bought, displeased Rupert and he warned against his son’s relationship with the former gymnast and acrobat. Antonio and Jocelyn discovered she was pregnant and eloped, despite his father’s wishes, and her brother’s warnings. Rupert visited the couple at their run down apartment not far from his manor in the East End, apologizing to his son and daughter-in-law and inviting them to stay with him to keep his grandchild close. Not long after, Alexandra was born at Mercy General Hospital on December 21st.
On her daughter’s eleventh birthday, Jocelyn took Alexandra to see The Flying Graysons perform with the traveling Haly’s Circus. She explained to her daughter about her childhood, and losing her parents, living with her older brother Roger, running away with the Circus for a free ride to Gotham just to be closer to her brother Jim. The Circus became her family and John Grayson, and Mary Lloyd were her best friends. That night, before the performance, Alexandra met the Graysons and their son Dick. That night would be the first and last time she saw the family perform.
Following the tragedy, Jocelyn held her daughter tight and met up with her brother, the lead detective on the case. Jim warned Jocelyn to take Alexandra home, but Jocelyn refused. She wouldn’t leave without knowing John and Mary’s son was taken care of, to which Jim assured her that someone of reputation had already come to take care of the remaining Grayson. Jocelyn carried a tired Alexandra home, in a state of grief, she failed to notice the group of men that made their way out of the shadows and circled the mother and daughter under the only streetlight on that stretch that remained in tact. Her pleading fell on deaf ears, and the sound of a bullet is what would wake Alexandra from her slumber. Jocelyn fell, and Alexandra tumbled to the concrete. When she stirred, the men were gone, and her mother’s cheeks were stained with tears, her blouse and coat soaked in blood. She crawled to her side and sobbed. The first to respond to the scene was a figure dressed in black, with pointy ears, and a cape. He comforted the child in his arms until the police arrived, Alexandra’s uncle second on the scene, devastated by the sight.
Two children lost parents that night, but no one knew how close it would bring them together. Try as he might, Jim was not granted custody of young Alexandra. Instead the judge granted custody to Rupert until his son was released from prison and only then would the case be revisited. Without her mother there at the home to preoccupy her, Alexandra roamed where she otherwise could not, and overheard her grandfather’s conversation with a man about a payment for his services. Upon further listening, Alexandra discovered names, and that the crime was not random, her grandfather had ordered her mother killed for collecting information on his organization. She was murdered before she could pass it on to her brother. Distraught, Alexandra escaped from her bedroom down the fire escape in an attempt to find her uncle and bring justice to her grandfather and the men he hired. Unfortunately, she didn’t know Gotham well. She attempted to use a payphone near the boarded up Monarch Theater but the line had been cut, when she turned around, she was confronted by a group of boys, not much older than her, but the formation reminded her of the night her mother died and she stepped back, cornering herself in the phone booth. Before the boys could speak, an older woman dressed in leather with her hair cropped short approached and told them to run along. As if they knew her, and respected her, they bolted off in the opposite direction and the woman turned her attention Alexandra, whose fists were clenched and shaking. She introduced herself as Selina and told Alexandra she had to be tough, or she wouldn’t survive out here in Gotham. Alexandra trusted this woman. She asked the elder woman where she could find the nearest Police Station, and explained she had to speak to her Uncle. Selina laughed, thinking Gotham’s police a joke, but she escorted the girl to the nearest Precinct and left her on the step, telling Alexandra that she would keep an eye out for her in the future.
When Jim saw Alexandra, he embraced her, telling her that he heard from one of the other officers (presumably in Rupert’s pockets) that she had gone missing, she struggled to explain what she had heard, but before she could finish her conversation with her Uncle, Rupert came, escorted by his driver and muscle to pick her up. Alexandra begged, and pleaded to speak to her Uncle, but Rupert dismissed it, asking Jim if the men who killed his daughter in law had been caught, to which Jim replied with malice in his voice that they had a suspect in custody. It wouldn’t be discovered until years later that Willis Todd was wrongly convicted, but instead took the fall for a crime he didn’t commit after making himself an enemy of Rupert Thorne.
Alexandra was expected to continue her scheduled lessons following her mother's death, Piano, Ballet, Gymnastics, etiquette, Italian, French, and Latin as well as regular schooling. He expected much from her but the big bad Don doted on his precious little 'rose.’ Alexandra's distaste for her grandfather and his 'business' only grew as time went on.
When Rupert was away on extended business trips, Alexandra would slip out the window and down the fire escape from again to traverse the streets of Park Row, better known as Crime Alley. The streets of Gotham, however grim they may be, were more exciting to her than the confinement of her grandfather’s home. It was in the same Alley her mother was killed, and Bruce's parents before her, that Alexandra would officially meet Jason Todd. In the instant they met, Alexandra and Jason weren’t fond of one another. From first impressions, he believed she was a stuck up princess who had no idea of life on the street and she believed he was a no good punk with a bad attitude, the kind that ended up working for her grandfather. Jason would pick fights with Alexandra, while the other boys edged him on. Eventually, he said the wrong thing, and she decked him in the jaw to which he replied "you're lucky I don't hit girls, doll,” the beginning of a nickname Alexandra despised.
Despite their initial dislike for one another, Alexandra was respected for her guts and attitude and welcomed by the Park Row alley kids. She took an active interest in free running which to her was a nice change from traditional Ballet and Gymnastics that was thrust onto her. With time, their first impressions crumbled and gave way to a partnership, and friendship.
The night Batman caught Jason lifting the tires from the Batmobile was not Alexandra's first meeting with the Bat, but it fueled her fascination with him and what he did. After Jason was placed in a home for troubled youths, and Alexandra therefore saw him less, she took it upon herself to utilize her time by researching Batman, and his known associates. At a young age, Alexandra soon realized what she wanted to do; she knew GCPD was no match for Gotham, as hard as her uncle did try, but Batman had the right idea. Alexandra set to cleaning up Gotham, and putting a stop to the wrong doers, including her grandfather.
The Birth of a Hero "I like the sound of 'Nightingale,' don't you? After all, child, you are quite the little songbird." --- Selina Kyle Months went by, and after crafting a mask for herself, Alexandra began to scout the rooftops, under the watchful eye of Selina Kyle . Catwoman had been keeping an eye on Alexandra since the day she witnessed the girl’s mother gunned down in Crime Alley, watching her, protecting her. One fateful run in with the Cat, whom Alexandra did not realize was the same woman that helped her, was all it took for Alexandra to fall on the Bat’s radar. Selina approached her and made her an offer to take her in and show her the ropes of life on the street but before Alexandra could refuse Batman and Robin swooped in. Bruce went toe to toe with Selina, while Robin, brash and assuming, chased Alexandra across the rooftops. He managed to grab her, in turn, she punched him in the face (again.) The two wrestled for the upper hand, Jason managing to find dominance just before Batman called him off, and like that they were gone. Alexandra couldn't help but feel there was something familiar about that Robin, and Jason too felt the same about the masked girl on the rooftop.
Eventually, Alexandra made the trek to Bristol to see Jason upon finding out Bruce Wayne had taken him in. When no answer came from the loudspeaker at the front gates, she climbed the wall around Wayne Manor and jumped to the other side. Poor execution and an improper landing caused Alexandra to fall through a soft spot in the earth and into the Cave.** When she came to, Alfred, Jason, and to her surprise, her cousin Barbara, surrounded her. Appearing from the shadows of the cave was the man that cradled her the night her mother died, he removed the cowl and revealed himself as Bruce Wayne. He told Alexandra that she could not speak of the cave, or even mention visiting the manor, or else she would be a target. Jason pleaded with Bruce, explaining that Lex could throw a mean left hook and she was the smartest girl he knew, Barbara reasoned that she was her cousin after all, and eventually Bruce caved, and allowed her to stay, that is, if she could prove herself.
And thus began Alexandra's adventures with the Bat.
Year One "You put on a brave face, but how long before fear consumes you?" --- Jonathan Crane Alexandra took her training just as serious as Bruce did his own, and it was just as brutal. It would be some months after she arrived that Bruce allowed her to accompany him and Jason on patrols, but she was patient. When she wasn't training her body, she was training her mind; reading every book in Bruce's study cover to cover, old reports she found in the computer, manuals, journals. She found she was quite skilled at networking, like her cousin, but she was far better at building things. She enjoyed tinkering and even went as far as dismantling and rebuilding the BatComputer so it ran smoother than ever. She didn't stop there, Alexandra studied the Batmobile and knew every part and every function. Grease on her cheek was the norm.
Alexandra's favorite part of the job, however, was being in the field. She took her patrols just as serious as she did her training, except maybe a few wise cracks here and there. She and Jason proved to be excellent partners, they played off each other well; communicating through body language, and understanding and executing strategies at the drop of a dime.
Her first year as a Vigilante was coming to a close, when Alexandra encountered the Scarecrow. The rogue incapacitated our young hero and carried her to the sewers beneath Arkham where he conducted a number of experiments on her. First, he introduced a number of airborne toxins to her to stimulate hallucinations such as rats, and bats, and spiders. Her reactions were considered irregular for most in her age group, as she showed little to no sense of distress. Then he probed her, making an effort to uncover what the girl was truly afraid of. When his efforts proved fruitless, he decided to take things to the next step, and he introduced her to a new formula of his fear toxin. He kept her strapped to an old morticians table and gauged her reactions while steadily increasing her doses of the course of a month until he finally received the desired results. The higher each dose, the worse her reactions to the fear became, until eventually, she was left in a catatonic state-- becoming effectively useless to Scarecrow, as he did not have the tools to study her brain which remained quite active, so he fled. Alexandra remained in the hole, strapped to the table, and lifeless while she withered away to practically nothing. It would be Jason and Dick who found her, Jason swearing up and down he heard her voice from the streets. Jason and Bruce set out to find Scarecrow while Alfred and Leslie Thompkins tended to Alexandra. She did not wake from her coma for another 4 months, but she could hear voices calling to her from beyond the nightmare; namely Jason's, and Alfred's, sometimes Barbara and her uncle's, but the voice she heard most clear was Bruce's; expressing his apologies for his failure.
A Death in the Family "And that was how the world ended, not with a bang, but with a whimper.” T.S. Elliot The years following her rescue brought many changes in the Family, many of Alexandra’s greatest fears came to be; the first being the events of with Barbara in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, the nightmares didn’t end there. As time went on, Alexandra watched Gotham change Jason. He became more reckless, more punishing to the criminals they were trying to apprehend. Bruce noticed the change too, but he was less understanding than she was. The night Jason nearly killed a man, was the night that Bruce fired Jason and forced him to hang up his cape. Alexandra followed Jason when he left the manor, accompanying him to Crime Alley where they both grew up. It was there Jason discovered secrets about his family that changed everything. Catherine Todd wasn’t his real mother, that is, according to his birth certificate. His mother could still be alive, so Jason left Gotham in search of a woman with the initials S.H. Alexandra remained in Gotham, waiting, worried. Bruce discovered Jason’s plan and followed him, promising Alexandra he would bring him home.
Bruce did keep his promise; however, no one ever expected Jason would return in a coffin. He did not share all of the details involved in Jason’s death. He claimed the explosion was random, and that Jason died a hero, fearing anything more would drive her to seek vengeance. Unsatisfied with this answer, Alexandra accessed the files via the Computer and read the detailed notes. After she discovered the truth, her disposition drastically changed. Taking on an aggression never before seen in her, she hunted the Joker, working her way through his goons to discover his whereabouts. When she found him in a warehouse on the dock she cut the lights and jumped him. Clad in Jason’s suit, she dealt punishing blows with a crowbar she found outside the warehouse. She could have killed him, and if it weren’t for Bruce interfering, she would have. The Bat forced the crowbar out of her hand and pulled her into an embrace, restraining her with a hug. She broke down and sobbed. Bruce realized there was no reasoning with her, so he sent her far away from Gotham, and far away from the Joker.
Titans "Lexi is everything a person should be. She's nice, but not a push over. She's cool, but not too cool to hang out with. Basically, she's just a huge badass." -- Garfield Logan
Nightwing introduced Nightingale to the Teen Titans, and the team welcomed her with open arms. They knew of the tragic loss, and mourned for Jason too; although she could not recover the part of heart that was gone with Jason, she opened up once more and found solace. She worked well with the team and learned by watching and working with each of them. She watched Dick lead his team in a way that Bruce never could. He trusted them and was open with them. She learned how to be a leader. Raven taught Alexandra how to meditate and relieve herself of negative emotions. Jericho taught her sign and Vic taught her how to reassemble his arm, which she found absolutely fascinating given her background in technology. Wally West became one of her best friends and taught her patience, because there is no one more patient than a speedster living at normal pace. Roy became a shoulder to lean on, and she to him. They both had their demons and confided in one another. Of course, Garfield taught her how to balance work and play.
With the team she found routine, and once more became strategic and analytical instead of rushing in for blood. Her skills caught the attention of Deathstroke, the Teen Titan’s most deadly enemy, a skilled mercenary for hire and a master tactician. Deathstroke once infiltrated the Titans by means of a young girl named Terra, presumed dead; however, Slade had a different plan for Nightingale. He separated the Titans, and cornered her, threatening to reveal not just her secret identity, but the identity of each and every one of Batman’s sidekicks and in turn the Bat himself. She didn’t believe him, until he said Bruce’s name. Defeated without so much as a punch thrown, Alexandra surrendered.

<br><br>When Jim saw Alexandra, he embraced her, telling her that he heard from one of the other officers (presumably in Rupert’s pockets) that she had gone missing, she struggled to explain what she had heard, but before she could finish her conversation with her Uncle, Rupert came, escorted by his driver and muscle to pick her up. Alexandra begged, and pleaded to speak to her Uncle, but Rupert dismissed it, asking Jim if the men who killed his daughter in law had been caught, to which Jim replied with malice in his voice that they had a suspect in custody. It wouldn’t be discovered until years later that Willis Todd was wrongly convicted, but instead took the fall for a crime he didn’t commit after making himself an enemy of Rupert Thorne.<br><br>Alexandra was expected to continue her scheduled lessons following her mother's death, Piano, Ballet, Gymnastics, etiquette, Italian, French, and Latin as well as regular schooling. He expected much from her but the big bad Don doted on his precious little 'rose.’ Alexandra's distaste for her grandfather and his 'business' only grew as time went on. <br><br>When Rupert was away on extended business trips, Alexandra would slip out the window and down the fire escape from again to traverse the streets of Park Row, better known as Crime Alley. <br><br>Despite their initial dislike for one another, Alexandra was respected for her guts and attitude and welcomed by the Park Row alley kids. She took an active interest in free running which to her was a nice change from traditional Ballet and Gymnastics that was thrust onto her. With time, their first impressions crumbled and gave way to a partnership, and friendship. <br><br>The night Batman caught Jason lifting the tires from the Batmobile was not Alexandra's first meeting with the Bat, but it fueled her fascination with him and what he did. Alexandra set to cleaning up Gotham, and putting a stop to the wrong doers, including her grandfather.<br><br><span class="bb-b">The Birth of a Hero</span><br><span class="bb-i">"I like the sound of 'Nightingale,' don't you? After all, child, you are quite the little songbird." --- Selina Kyle</span><br>Months went by, and after crafting a mask for herself, Alexandra began to scout the rooftops, under the watchful eye of Selina Kyle . Alexandra couldn't help but feel there was something familiar about that Robin, and Jason too felt the same about the masked girl on the rooftop.<br><br>Eventually, Alexandra made the trek to Bristol to see Jason upon finding out Bruce Wayne had taken him in. Jason pleaded with Bruce, explaining that Lex could throw a mean left hook and she was the smartest girl he knew, Barbara reasoned that she was her cousin after all, and eventually Bruce caved, and allowed her to stay, that is, if she could prove herself.<br><br>And thus began Alexandra's adventures with the Bat.<br><br><span class="bb-b">Year One</span><br><span class="bb-i">"You put on a brave face, but how long before fear consumes you?" --- Jonathan Crane</span><br>Alexandra took her training just as serious as Bruce did his own, and it was just as brutal. <br><br>Alexandra's favorite part of the job, however, was being in the field. She took her patrols just as serious as she did her training, except maybe a few wise cracks here and there. She and Jason proved to be excellent partners, they played off each other well; communicating through body language, and understanding and executing strategies at the drop of a dime. <br><br>Her first year as a Vigilante was coming to a close, when Alexandra encountered the Scarecrow. <br>It would be Jason and Dick who found her, Jason swearing up and down he heard her voice from the streets. <br><br><span class="bb-b">A Death in the Family</span><br><span class="bb-i">"And that was how the world ended, not with a bang, but with a whimper.” T.S. Elliot</span><br>The years following her rescue brought many changes in the Family, many of Alexandra’s greatest fears came to be; the first being the events of with Barbara in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, the nightmares didn’t end there.<br>As time went on, Alexandra watched Gotham change Jason. Bruce discovered Jason’s plan and followed him, promising Alexandra he would bring him home.<br><br>Bruce did keep his promise; however, no one ever expected Jason would return in a coffin. <br><br><span class="bb-b">Titans</span><br><span class="bb-i">"Lexi is everything a person should be. She's nice, but not a push over. She's cool, but not too cool to hang out with. Basically, she's just a huge badass." -- Garfield Logan</span><br><br>Nightwing introduced Nightingale to the Teen Titans, and the team welcomed her with open arms. Of course, Garfield taught her how to balance work and play.<br><br>With the team she found routine, and once more became strategic and analytical instead of rushing in for blood. </div>
