Vincent grew up in the woods of North Carolina. He was raised by his mostly single mother and grandparents who moved down from Queens, NY. His father was out of the picture since he was very young, a sore topic for his mother. There was some sort of violence followed by prison.
He found his purpose during high school when he experienced the panic of 9/11. He would have his chance to be part of something big. It would be an outlet for his delight in all the war stories he heard from his grandfather, a Korean war veteran. He enlisted immediately after graduating high school right into the pipeline for Ranger Regiment.
Vincent deployed to Iraq late 2005 with the 75th's 3rd Ranger battalion after a slew of schools and training. It was a fast-paced kinetic rundown in Sadr City where he was regarded as a stud on the M249. When they returned to the states he was given the opportunity to become one of their snipers. In 2006 he deployed again to Iraq and befriended Mike Greene who was tasked on a more specific recon and denial job with 2nd battalion. They were paired together by chance when Mike's former shooter was wounded.
Half-way through the deployment they were faced with a choice that would end their time in 3-75. Mike and Vincent were rapidly clearing compounds for overwatch positions while a platoon was hitting an objective. In one courtyard they discovered an al-qaeda cell preparing to ambush the others with small arms and suicide vests. With Mike's encouragement they took to eliminating the cell on their own even though they had radio trouble. There were several civilians that were wounded or killed in the reckless and aggressive cross-fire. One squad took casualties on the ground because the sniper team pursued the threat without first establishing communications in a sensitive engagement. Despite their good intent and success, the two strikes would see them dismissed from Ranger Regiment.
They were saved enough to be reassigned to a fitting billet where they could be used outside of SOCOM. They were placed with 1st Infantry Division's red-headed 1-26 Light-Infantry Regiment, reconnaissance platoon. Here they met Luiz Mendoza who ran the platoons weapon squad and Dillon Retfield during their first deployment together in 2009. Retfield was an older shady fellow suspected to be CAG or CIA "paramilitary something" working out of their outposts between the Helmand and Kandahar provinces.
Retfield had lofty goals for his last assignment in Afghanistan. He was impressed by the caliber of soldier that were posted with him so he opted to hand-pick his own personal entourage in lieu of receiving coordinated support from the other SOCOM assets. He knew that regular infantry didn't receive the same support, meaning much less ISR circling overhead. He could get as dirty as he wanted and they were always with him. The boys he picked, including Vincent, were more than happy to oblige. For 8 months they participated in sordid direct-action operations in the shadow of 1-26 Infantry Regiment.
Retfield and Mendoza leave service. Vincent and Mike go on a 4th deployment in a sniper and recon/surveillance capacity. It was as exciting as the last with the exception of various RPG shrapnel wounds he received and the loss of a close friend in an ambush. It was a defining moment that struck his ego. He chose to fight rather than turn back and possibly save a friend. He alone questions his judgement and vowed to himself to never make that decision again so thoughtlessly.
Vincent and Mike exit the service in 2014. Retfield attempts to round up his old entourage to jump on some money-making plans doing what they do best. With the help of some of his shadier DEA contacts, Retfield, Vincent and crew turned a living putting clamps on border drug funnels under the radar. For the better part of 4 years they leeched intel from the DEA and border agencies to drop mules and pistoleros with little discretion, lest they pay a substantial fee. Even though they are a small time crew their ruthless efficiency gained them reputation with border gangs and cartels, called "Los Depredadores". Several US agencies have taken notice of their activity and are putting together case files, however sparse.
The good. Sincere, focused, patient. Vincent keeps to himself if he's not making light of a disturbing situation. He'll find some hard-bright-deep-philosophical approach to whatever atrocity is writhing around at his feet —in his hands. His devil may care attitude in life comes from the competitive and brutal atmosphere that shaped his early adulthood being a gunfighter. The bad. A thousand yard stare framed by a half-smile. He never learned to express his emotions in childhood and this trend continued with the shark-tank brotherhood in service and the disassociation that comes with combat. He's secure in his muted feelings, but they prevent him from getting truly close with others. It's his passion that drives this. He questions whether or not he can put down the rifle, it's his worth in the world. The ugly. Life is suffering. It does not seem so valuable in a jungle of guns, so he rarely hesitates to pull the trigger. His dirty view of the world means he believes he needs to be ready to strike back always. He will dare where he shouldn't. Life, even his, is expendable. He'll fight to a bitter end.
Family, Friends, and Associates: Might replace Jinme Son: F, 31 Ex-fiancée. High school friends. Reacquainted in 2015, after Vincent was discharged from the service. Engaged in 2017, then not in 2018. Tensions with work and her worsening depression has held off any wedding plans. One of two people on the planet he has a soft spot for but can't seem to connect the way he needs. They remain friends.
Mike Greene: M, 40 Former 3-75 sniper. Good friend who worked with Vincent in Afghanistan. Moved over to regular army together after a sour mission. One of the big influencers in getting dirty on the border. Devil on his left.
Luiz Mendoza: M, 37 Former 1-26IN RGT Scout. Served together, roomed together, slugged cartel goons together. Angel on his right.
Likes: Desert heat, frilly drinks capped with hard liquor, punk, grunge, blues, weapon drills, ass-man, lolita (stfu), fishing, and reading.
Dislikes: R.O.E., condoms, suburbia, carbonation, cartel, computer work, a bad batch of blueberries, ghouls/ghosts/goblins/green men.(Not that he believes in them, but he'll kill a strange motherfucker if he has to.)
Fears: Vincent dreads the idea of failing his team. He will hold himself accountable for a death so far as to obsess in his spare time. What could have been done differently, how could he better control the chaos of battle? Hurting his ex-fiancée. They have had a rocky relationship since before the engagement and his lack of emotional expression damages their bond. He deeply cares about her, but may be confusing it for love despite what she needs. She has been depressed and expressing suicidal thoughts lately. He's not sure how he can help her, or how long either of them have left before someone gets seriously hurt.
Weaknesses: Vincent was diagnosed with PTSD when he left the service. He responds to certain trigger stimuli of scents sounds and physical exertion with extreme alertness and unsympathetic prejudice. This can be a boon in combat, but a hindrance elsewhere in his life. In a similar manner he goes many nights with little sleep, though not quite insomnia. Vincent is starting to experience chronic back and shoulder pains, possibly from the shrapnel wounds or a bulging disc. As long as he's moving it seldom bothers him. He fears one day something is going to pop.
Tools/Equipment: Satellite phone, a silver watch, and in the "trunk": a skullcrusher head-mount and monocular night vision [PVS-14].
Assuming he is an operative in the program. The following is given that he has access and that it does not compromise the mission.
Clothing: Locale dependent. Typically neutral colors. Lightweight jacket/hoodie or long sleeve button-up and fitted hiking/work pants. Hiking shoes (Sticks) or all-black Chuck Taylors (Urban). Black knit skull-cap.
Tools/Equipment: At his discretion; plate-carrier (ranger green body armor kit), slim battle-belt, Joint Tactical Radio System, throat-mic & earbud (solo/duo ops) or headset (Peltor, team ops), IR beacon, wrist GPS, first aid kit (incl. trauma shears, tourniquets), fixed-blade thrusting knife, heavy leather gloves, rappelling harness, zip-tie cuffs, 9-Bangers, incendiary grenades, smoke grenades, star-cluster flares, IR chem-lights.
Grey hiking pack, high-cut ballistic helmet, dual-tube night vision (PVS-31), weapon-mountable thermal scope (PAS-13Cv3, 1-10x), spotting scope (10-60x), satellite communication antennae system (SATCOM), 70m static rope. Drop guns (Cheap and light small arms).
Hello,
I'm 32 years old and I was lured into this forum because of our sick hobby. I come from a background of poetry and roleplaying starting in high school. I was a much better painter than I ever was writing, much less writing other than poetry. Today nothing has changed. I would love to become better and I welcome any critique.
I can handle something like 2 RPs at a time. I can guarantee at least 2 posts a week, typing 300-1500 words between dialogue and detail-oriented posts when the going is good. I can't function without some of that sweet OOC chat.
If you're looking to start a RP, my only restrictions are based on site rules — of which I frequently forget — and I think that a 2 paragraph bottom-line is reasonable. I prefer original characters and original stories.
I'm good for medieval, fantasy, horror, sci-fi, space-faring, western, or especially military/war roleplays. I always have a tiny itch for traditional pirate RPs; however, I've accepted long ago that I can't do it and no longer pursue them. I like gritty settings, tragedy, fast paced scenes, crawling tense scenes and a drop of natural romance. Also, nonsense is always fun.
