- Flying: Being of the Avariel race, Zephyra was born with a pair of wings that allow her to fly in the sky. She has years of experience under her belt that allows her to pull off stunning ariel tricks. - Good shot: Zephyra has become known for her use of bow to hit targets, even from far away or moving. - Speed: Wheather it's in the sky or on the ground, Zephyra has ways to get around quickly.
Flaws/Weakness:
- Little protection: Zephyra can't fly fast or well if she's too weighed down. Because of that, she's not very well armored and thus more susceptible to attacks. - Plays it safe: While Zephyra will go into battle, after some events that have transpired in her life combined with how little armor she can wear, she fears getting hurt again. She most likely won't take a risk that will get her hurt, even if that means losing a strategic advantage or letting an ally get hurt. - Useless when wet: Zephyra can't fly well in storms as rain and snow weigh her down and make it difficult to move. She'll refuse to fly in thunderstorms as the risk of getting struck by lightning is too great.
Bio:
Zephyra has always lived a rather nomadic life. When she was young, she traveled with her parents around the lands as they taught her how to fly and how to hunt and live off the land. Later when she became an adult she traveled on her own, preferring to make her own way in life. When the monsters appeared, she fought to protect herself and those that happened to be around her. That slowly turned into mercenary for hire as things calmed down. Zephyra was happy with that life for a while, ready to show off her skills with flying and a bow as she took monsters out as they descended, even being hailed as something of a hero by those that she protected. But eventually, she tried to take on something that she couldn't quite handle.
She was at a small village at the time, she was the only one there that was hired to fight, not that they needed a lot of people as there were only a small amount of monster sightings in the area. But on that day, the sky opened up and several monsters came out. More monsters then Zephyra knew she could take on her own. But she still flew up to meet them. She managed to take down quite a few before something happened. A monster had managed to reach her and attack, hitting her left wing. The attack sent her plummeting out of the air and to the ground. The only things that saved her life were that she wasn't too high up at the time, she was able to somewhat slow her descent with her wings, and the trees.
When Zephyra came to, the battle was over. The village was in shambles but the villagers had managed to run the rest of the monsters off with only a few casualties. The villagers had done their best to tend to Zephyra's injuries, but even their best hadn't been enough to save Zephyra's left wing and the best they could do for her was amputate it. While eventually, Zephyra's other injuries healed, she was never quite able to get over the shock that not only one of her wings were gone, but her ability to fly was as well. But not long after she recovered enough to be able to travel on foot again, she received an invitation from a man that might be able to help her fly once more.
Extra:
Usually has a dagger hidden in one of her boots in case she needs some up close protection.
I've been thinking about a character and I was wondering what you would think about a flying character like an Avariel since the monsters come from portals in the sky?
It wasn't supposed to be this way. That was what had been going through Ruby's mind for the past two months ever since the bodies of her mother and the other elder Chosen had been discovered. Her mother hadn't had much longer left, they both knew that, but she wasn't supposed to die like that. Ruby could still fear the knot in her stomach when she felt that surge of power in her, that signaled her mother's death or rather her murder. Ruby wasn't ready to lose her, nor was she ready to take on the sole responsibility of the chosen of Shadow. But like always ruby didn't have a choice. She spent the two months that came after with her father, morning and trying to heal. They both knew their time with Alyssa was limited, they both told each other that they spent as much time as they could with her and let her knew that they loved her as much as they could, but it did little to help ease the pain in their hearts.
And then Ruby was ordered to leave with the others. To go deep out of the city and find rifts and an ancient relic, so that the city would be safe. Ruby didn't want to leave her father behind, nor did he want to see her leave. But neither said anything to this effect, as this is what the gods wanted and instead said their goodbyes as if this could be their last.
So that was how Ruby found herself outside the city with the other chosen, in new territory. To be honest, it felt like Ruby knew her surroundings better than the other chosen. Ruby was a quiet girl, not one for much interacting with others over years, even at the meetings they all had to attend. She knew them all well enough that before this, she could have seen them on the streets and go "yes, that is one of my fellow chosen" but honestly that was about it for most of them. It made traveling with everyone kind of...awkward. She at least had Cecilia with her, her loyal companion who was draped over her shoulders as they traveled, that being her favorite spot when Ruby had to move around. But now that they were taking a break, Ruby was just sitting in the shade of the tree, waiting to see what would happen next.
She didn't have to wait long, as Ka'ora got up on her familiar Iarzu to announce that they should all introduce themselves to get to know one another better. It took a minute for someone to get up, but when someone did, it was Ethan, who seemed a little nervous about being out here. But considering what Ruby knew about him, that wasn't too surprising. Next was Lachdonon who introduced himself after trying to get Jonah to pay attention. Lachdonon was probably the guy Ruby knew the best because he had been born into the same boat as she was, as his father had been the previous earth chosen. It was a weird kind of connection to share in which Ruby didn't know if it made her more comfortable around him or more...awkward (because talking about how you were slowly killing off your biological parent by just existing wasn't exactly a fun topic to discuss). Then came Vita who offered to listen to anyone that needed to talk which was kind of her considering the situation must have been as hard on her as the rest of them. Then Amalthea who was rather curt but at least kept her introduction short, though Ruby felt like she was going to have some trouble interacting her. Then finally Sammael, who introduced him and his sister Esmeray. Honestly Ruby didn't know how to feel about either of them. Sammael because he was the opposite element as her, Light, so that kind of made Ruby feel uncomfortable around him already and while he seemed like a nice enough person, her mother also rarely let her interact with or even get around him growing up. Esmeray on the other hand, well there elements were the only ones that liked one another, and yet Ruby hadn't interacted with her much at all over years either. Probably because of who her twin was, which was a shame. Though maybe that would change over the adventure.
Well, besides Jonah, she was the only one left to introduce herself. Ruby got up and came a bit out of the shade so the others could get a better look at her before taking a breath and saying "Um, Hi. My name is Ruby Dewer." She said it, not a nervous tone but more of an unsure one. "I'm the chosen of Shadow, and um...My mother was the previous chosen of shadows." She faltered a bit at that but quickly tried to recover, "U-Um this is my familiar Cecilia," She gestured to where her familiar was resting on her shoulders. "And um, it's really a pleasure to be working with all of you." With that Ruby quickly retreated back into the shade of the tree and sat back down, resisting the urge to sink into the shadows over how that just went.
Name: Ruby Dewer Age: 22 Gender: Female Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Chosen Marking:
This is located at the base of the back of her neck.
Appearance:
Familiar: Name: Cecilla
Chosen Element: Shadows
Shadow manipulation: Basically she can manipulate shadows to look different. She can make them bigger or smaller, can turn a man's shadow into a beast's and so on. But the more drastic the change, the harder it is to do and it gets harder to keep up over time. There are also times when Ruby can't manipulate the shadows and nothing happens to the owner of the shadow because their shadow is being manipulated. So essentially, all this is good for is possible scares and so Ruby can be the best shadow puppet champion.
Entering shadows: Ruby can go into shadows and stay there. Its like it's own little pocket dimension that is only limited by how big the shadow is. Ruby can only enter if the shadow is big enough and she can't breathe inside of a shadow so she'll eventually have to surface for air. Also if the shadow moves she'll be moved (think if she's in the shadow of a buggy and that buggy moves she will be taken along for the ride unless she gets out) and if someone shines a light on the shadow to make it disappear, she will be forcibly ejected from the shadow. She can not manipulate the shadow that she is in and she will cease to manipulate a shadow if she enters it. She can bring other people into the shadow with her if the shadow is big enough.
Shadow balls: Ruby is able to take a shadow, ball it up and throw it at something or someone. The ball can be made in various sizes, with the bigger ones hurting the most but being harder to throw. A baseball sized one would hurt about as much as getting hit by a baseball would but it's easier for ruby to throw. Meanwhile, a beach ball sized one would hurt significantly more but would be harder for Ruby to throw, so she would need to be close by.
Night vision: A passive ability that allows Ruby to see in the dark. Oddly enough her Night vision is better than her normal vision.
Shadow tendrils: Essentially tendrils that come from the shadows and latch onto something or someone, either holding them down tossing them. The Tendrils can reach up to about 10 feet, with the more stretched out it is the thinner it is. While they can be cut, depending on how far out they're stretched it could be as easy as cutting through paper or cutting down a tree. They also can be burned or frozen or potentially destroyed by other means.
Shadow spikes: Much like shadow tendrils, but instead spikes shoot out of the shadows. The spikes size is restricted by the shadow's size and they can not leave the shadow. Spikes can get up to five feet in length and like the tendril can also be cut, with the close you are to the tip being the easiest to cut and the closest to the base being harder to cut. Unlike the tendrils, they can no be burned but if you were to freeze them you could then smash the spikes to bits.
Weapon:
She has two that she keeps with her in sheaths on her waist. They're slightly longer than her forearm and only the outside is sharpened to cut, the inner curve can be used to bludgeon.
Personality: Ruby’s not that great at first impressions. Blunt, serious, and standoffish, she seems aloof at best, and hostile at worst. Her socially awkward nature and directness make her come off as unfriendly, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Ruby wants friends, doing her best to curb her blunt tongue and practice small talk, but socialization is hard for her to understand. She feels inept both in company and in her place as one of the chosen, though she had no real choice in the latter. She feels there must have been some kind of mistake when she was chosen, and that everyone is waiting for her to show her worth. She trains hard and works hard, desperate to prove herself, but because of that, she has often neglected friends she has made. Again, that’s not to say she doesn’t want any, but with her limited time and energy, she just doesn’t know how to balance her life very well.
History:
The day Ruby was born, and her mother, Alyssa, held her and looked her over, she couldn't help but laugh. She and her husband William had been trying for years to conceive a child. With each passing year, the hope that they would be able to hold a child in their arms that they could call their own dwindled. Adoption was an option but they wanted someone that would sure a closer connection to them, something that could only be shared by blood. And then one day to their surprise, they discovered that Alyssa was expecting. The joy the two felt only grew as each day brought them closer and closer to meeting their child. And then, they welcomed Ruby into the world, ready to give her all the love they could give. It wasn't until they saw the mark on their little Ruby's neck that they realize the gravity of the situation. Their daughter had been chosen the God of Shadows. William was somber but Alyssa couldn't help but burst out laughing at the irony.
"Well dear, I was wondering when my successor was going to be born." She told William as gently traced her daughter's mark, the very same one that was on the back of her own neck.
It was hard for William to accept at first. He knew that more likely then anything, he would outlive his wife by quite a bit. It was the hazard of being married to a chosen and he had accepted it. But he wasn't prepared for the gods to pull this kind of cruel trick on him. They had wanted a child so badly so that even after Alyssa passed on, he would still have a part of her with him. And now the Gods were claiming that as well. While Alyssa wasn't thrilled about the situation either, she quickly accepted it. They couldn't change anything and be hurt by it would only hurt their daughter. She knew too well from experience. Alyssa knew that this situation wouldn't end well for their family, she was determined to make it something that William and Ruby could recover from in the end. And with Alyssa's help, William was able to come around to be the father Alyssa needed him to be.
The two tried to give Ruby as happy of a childhood as they could, one where she could grow up happy and make good memories. For a while, they were able to do this but eventually, they had to tell her about her future. It had been...rough for Alyssa when she was told the burdens of being a chosen. That her life meant the death of her mentor and that she to would one day die so that her successor would live just for that cycle to repeat. It didn't help that Ruby was 8 when they told her. Ruby had taken it worse then Alyssa had. When the information finally sunk in, Ruby spent days not saying anything, just holding onto her mother silently, as if terrified that at any moment, she could disappear. Alyssa did what she could to reassure her that things would be okay, that she wasn't going to leave her anytime soon and though she was able to get Ruby to interact with the world once more, she knew that her daughter wasn't going to be the same.
Ruby spent the next two years before training spending time with her family, not so much out of fear of losing her mother anymore but to get as much time as she could with them. These memories would be the ones that she looked back fondly on for the rest of her life. Shortly after her 10th birthday, Ruby's training started. It wasn't hard for Ruby to compare herself with her mother. There was no one else like Ruby in the world and...she was supposed to take her mother's place. It wasn't hard for Ruby to find flaws in herself, in her skills and abilities. Even normal things like talking to people outside of her family were hard for Ruby. She didn't feel like she was someone as great as her mother or the other chosen. But outside of her death, there was no way to get a different chosen and that wasn't an option for her, she knew that. So Ruby threw herself into her training, and in doing so she created more cherished times with her mother, like the first time they hopped into a shadow together, or her and her mother manipulating the shadows for a show for her father. Any shortcomings she felt she had, she tried to fix herself or keep to herself to keep her mother from worrying. She even tried to make friends over the years as well but she kept those at a distance, not willing to put the time into them to let them grow stronger yet, convinced that she needed to grow stronger first.
Theme: Winter (The Wind can be still) Dialogue Color: Dark Purple Other: - Ruby's father William, a blacksmith by trade, made her weapon, as he did for Alyssa. - Cecilla is completely blind in her baby form but not her grown form. While in her baby form, she prefers to stay on either Alyssa or Ruby. - While Ruby is not blind without her glasses, unless its dark where she's at, she prefers to keep them on.
Figured I should post this here first since I updated the weapon section slightly to add in the fact she has 2 now.
I've been really interested in getting into DnD but I don't really have much experience outside of playing a bit of a DnD-like game called Masks (a superhero game not fantasy) and listening to podcasts like the adventure zone. So I don't really know if you're looking for more experienced players or will take non-experienced ones too.
