I was actually shunned for doing that very same thing once. Attending the memorial for someone I barely knew. Was a very surreal experience. Had to argue the merits of caring about life even if it's unfamiliar to you with an angry grieving person. Still not even sure I handled the situation correctly. Perhaps I should have just said nothing, retrospectively, but that was a long time ago.

Yea sometimes people get a little weird whenever someone's death hits them close to home. Nothing really registers and when you try to talk sense, sometimes they just block it out. You did the right thing by trying to attend.
