(My ideal party size is 3-4 people. My goal is to create a thematic narrative with you, of what it means to find hope in chaos and destruction. This game will allow for adult themes. Simple die-roll elements will also be used to keep the narrative fresh. If you're interested in building a grimdark story about survival and the human spirit, read on!)

Doom, Eternal: A Story of Survival

The age of man has come to an end, their works destroyed, empires fallen and people scattered. The Earth itself has cracked, spewing forth the fiery demons of the abyss to haunt the world and torture its last inhabitants. Amidst all the evil that Hell can conjure and all the wickedness that mankind has produced, there is only you.

You, who remembers a time before the war. You, spared by luck, grace or deeds. You, the last vestige of a dying world. Carried upon your shoulders is the last hope of humanity, the final ember of our species' great spirit. Beaten but never broken, adrift but never lost, wounded but never tamed.

This story will follow a group of humanity's last living members as they struggle to survive in a desolate world. Together they will try to find meaning in each other and in their suffering, and eventually become the champions and saviors that humanity needs to survive. Tried through the rage of Hell and tempered through the fires of war, you will rise from the ashes, taking your place as humanity's last, best hope for survival.

Setting

This roleplay will borrow from Doom's monsters and setting for convenience - that's the world, demons, and other elements - but will focus on the existing figures within the story very little. In the beginning, the efforts of Samuel Hayden and the ARC resistance are insufficient, failing you immediately. In the latter days of the war for human survival, they are left only as mythical fantasies. Overall, I'd prefer to avoid mentioning them entirely. Amidst the ashes of your fallen world, there is only you.

The society you inhabit was itself once quite advanced, taking advantage of hell's energies to produce wonder-weapons and technologies once thought impossible. Amidst its ruins, even the scraps can sometimes defy explanation, but this roleplay will focus on transforming this setting and its oddities from science fiction to science-fantasy.

Mechanics

Rather than playing as a character with you, I as the GM will periodically change the environment and your goals and challenges in order to guide the game. These narrative-focused posts will accompany heavy OOC interaction here in this thread as we discuss the goings-on of the story, and the outcome of challenges will be determined by a simple set of character stats and dice rolls, then elaborated on through the story by you.

When creating your character, you'll be given a set of numbers, which you can then assign to a simple set of stats (empathy, combat prowess, agility, intelligence, etc) as you please. As the game progresses, you'll be asked to roll a d6 to use a given stat against a problem - if the roll passes the score needed, you'll succeed. If not, you'll fail.

If needed I can provide expected minimums of response, but I'd much rather allow you room to explore the character you want to write, rather than forcing you strictly onto rails.

Plot

This story follows the player characters from their first days of the apocalypse, through their survival of the end of days and into their redemption and ascension as the chosen of humanity. Like above, this will be accomplished by focusing on the mythos and mysticism of the end-times - your character's story will be as much or more about spiritual enlightenment and inner strength as it is about physical prowess. (Do note: that enlightenment need not conform to a single culture's standards or ideas - whether your character's enlightenment is rooted in Buddhist, Christian, Indian or entirely original ideas, the journey and power of the idea is the focus, not the semantics).

If you find this prospect intimidating, don't. All you need to know how to do to play is a firm understanding of a character arc - I'll be there to guide you the rest of the way.

Interested?

I'm not going to take character applications in this thread. However, I will provide a template of what I'd like to see in the hopes of inspiring you.

Name:

Age to Start: (Please no characters under the age of 15 or over the age of 65)

Gender/Pronoun (if that's your thing):

Height and Weight, Ethnicity, Appearance:

What Was Your Great Flaw Before the End: (did you drink, abuse your family, or destroy the environment? Were you a womanizer or a whore? Nothing is off the table, though I would ask you to keep your decency as a writer if you decide to explore a darker theme. The harder the fall, the greater the path to redemption!)

What Family and/or Friends Did You Have, Before the Apocalypse: (if you'd like, you can request one of these characters to survive - they will appear in the story initially at my discretion, before being placed into your charge)

Where Were You When the Invasion Began: (try to stay away from geography and stick to a location that will allow me to place you with the other players initially)

How Have You Dealt With Living in the Week Since:

What Was Your Most Shameful Moment - Something That Will Haunt You To Your Grave:

What Brings You Hope/What Has Kept You Going:

Assign Yourself up to one 3, two 2s, and a 1 in any of the following categories, as it makes sense in the context of your character: Intelligence | Agility | Dexterity | Empathy | Physical Prowess | Custom (if your character has a special skill from a job or lifestyle, for example being a marksman in the army or a doctor, you may assign a number to that skill)

Other Backstory - Where Did You Work, How Did You Get There, etc:
Geez, it's been what, 7 years? I joined up a few years before the site reformat at the turn of the decade, and used to play a lot during middle and high school. This site jump started my writing career and I met so many awesome people, some of which I really wish I'd kept in better contact with.

And now I'm back for a different reason - mainly, looking for a way to connect and work with other writers and a social outlet that's healthier than video games. I love to create, and I love to create with other people. With all my experience nowadays, I'm really hoping I'll be able to make something amazing.

Looking forward to jumping into at least one game and GMing another, and looking forward to seeing where this experience takes me!
It's been a long time since I participated here, but a milestone like this deserves my praise. Congratulations Mahz, and be proud. You're at the head of something wonderful.

I found RPG around 2011-12, and immediately fell in love. With only a bit of RP experience behind me, I jumped in. Expecting a similar experience to when I roleplayed with in-game groups in the past, I instead found an incredibly passionate, friendly group of players that couldn't wait to explore worlds with me. Where I had previously dabbled in writing, the passion ignited - my love for creating worlds, characters and stories that can live and breathe with the people experiencing them, persists to this day.

That passion in writing was one of the only reasons I was able to scrape out of high school. It got me my first serious job, which has led me to the beginnings of a successful career path, today. It taught me to respect my fellow authors - that no matter what someone's experience might be, the most inspiring stories occur from the most radically different backgrounds.

And although most of the people I used to play with seem to have set the site down as well, I truly think I made some real friends here during my time.

In this day and age, it's difficult for me to find someone who I can bond with. Most of my relationships are professional, and few lead to true friendship. Even in a field of shared interests, my buddies often lack the true depth of character that I wish I could see more of, in the world.

But when you write with someone, you open a doorway to the soul, and by getting to know someone's character, you get to know that person, as well. It's been my privilege to write with everyone who I've known on this site, and I hope, someday, I'll have the privilege of knowing them again.

So, to RPG, I say thanks. This site helped fill a role in my life that I didn't know I needed, at the time. And now, years later, I still think of it fondly, and think of it weekly. This site is a wonderful place, and a place that someday, I hope to be able to come back to again.
Brief introduction: I'm Prometheus, long-time(ish) site user and lurker. I've found myself in the unfortunate instance of being incredibly bored as of late, and as I've had Mass Effect on my mind lately, I was wondering if someone would like to join me in a little venture. A few details of what I had in mind:

Whether or not it ever actually sees a publisher, what I want to do is write something that would be worth publishing. A tangible story within the mass effect universe that's broken up chapter-by-chapter, rather than post by post or thought-by-thought. To that end, I'm looking for someone who is more of a co-author than anything else, who I can not only bounce ideas off of (and be able to respond to their own in turn), but who prides themselves in a clean writing style and the ability to properly edit, as well as being able to write for multiple characters, some of who may not necessarily be their own creation - they might be mine, or they might be preexisting in the Mass Effect-verse. In regards to the plot and characters, I'd like to sit down and brainstorm with you as a partner, and toss ideas back and forth about what we might do.

As explained in the title, the primary focus will be adventure and action oriented, but by no means am I condemning anything else. Think of it like the games - action and combat are certainly at the front of the player's focus, but there are a lot of layers behind that - dialog and conversation, and just as importantly, setting and relationships.

Needless to say, I'd appreciate it if you know a bit about the universe. Playing all three games is one thing, and that certainly provides a good background, but being interested in reading what's in the codex and the context for how stuff works is another.

Look forward to writing with you!

*hit the frigging enter key before I was finished with the post, and somehow that ended up submitting it early -_-

Oh well, it's finished now.
Alright, so I know this has been brought up before but I'm still kinda confused about Chico; how much of it is actually bordered off from the outside and converted into a safezone?

something like this, maybe?

I'd never thought about it too much, but Chico's kinda my thing.

Here's the old description, if that helps. It's not really pretty or formatted, but it's something.

Also, I just had a thought: should we create a third doc where we can store all of the old posts in the event the website crashes again? Or is that too much unnecessary work?

It'd probably be better to trust individual RPers with keeping the posts that they post. If it's got your forum handle on it, you should save it.

At least, that's what I've been doing.
Nice IC post! Can't wait to see what's cooking up in Chico... :)

Also, Daryl's built his own economy on digging car batteries out of abandoned vehicles. 5 years later, they're still charged.

As long as it SOUNDS feasible, you're fine by me :)
Hey, I wrote a thing for Daryl in the OP, if you want to add it.

She could hear the walkers pushing and shoving against the entryway behind her, but the sounds faded away quickly, despite such an enclosed area.

The rooms she ran through were more of the same, some with walkers, some with bodies, some with neither. She was exceptionally mindful of where side passages were, now, and how far away alternate exits were. If she ran into a dead end, she didn't want to get caught by the zombies that were surely shambling along behind her.

She began to get hungry, and could hear her stomach rumble angrily at her, demanding sustenance. She hadn't been walking for more than an hour or two since she'd woken up, but she hadn't eaten anything for some time before that. She'd gone without food before, and it wasn't an experience she was keen to repeat.

The tunnels went on endlessly, this one not narrowing or widening, instead just going around and around, like a rat maze. She heard the Voice yawn a few times over the loudspeakers that were everywhere, and had time to think while she walked. Who was it that was watching her? Was he the one that had set up the area she was in now? Why? To what end? Where was she, anyway?

She was still pondering these questions as she rounded another corner and came to a T-section. She made to keep going, but froze when she saw the pack leering at her from the tunnel ahead of her.

At some point she must have been turned around, so that she was going back the way she came, and the sight in front of her was absolutely terrifying. The walkers had packed themselves into the tunnel in front of her, taking up space where there was none. They'd evidently spent the last little while trampling over each other as they'd walked, since most of them were sporting new wounds on their faces and bodies. Broken noses, mostly, which didn't help their appearance. She could see them grinning at her, lips peeled back and rotted away, as they gazed emptily down the hallway. They advanced slowly but surely, hands pressing against the side of the tunnel, feet tripping over themselves. She watched as two at the front fell down on their faces, looked up from the floor and continued to crawl. Their fellows stepped on them without any concern.

Acacia realized that as she'd been frozen, staring at the scene, they'd advanced another 10 feet down the tunnel. She tried desperately to remember which direction it was that she'd gone when she'd reached this intersection last time, and decided that she'd definitely gone right. That meant this time, she was facing the other direction, she'd have to go right again.

She took the path and hurried along, glancing back to see the pack shuffle past, some of the walkers following her down, others paying no mind. She kept going, and wondered how badly her claustrophobia would be after she got out of this.

The pipe ahead of her took an abrupt turn into another wall, and Acacia followed, only to find herself scrambling back, having just run into another zombie.

It leered at her, and lunged forward immediately, groaning and opening it's mouth. Acacia pushed it back, and it staggered away. She backed up without looking, and felt herself hit the curved side of the turn. She fell, her hands flying over the walls for something to hold on to, and landed on her ass, hard.

The pain had barely registered before the zombie fell on top of her. She tried to push it off, but it was heavy – a fresh corpse. The side of it's face had been mauled away, exposing it's left eyeball in it's entirety, looking like it was about to fall out of it's skull. It's nose had been bitten off.

The two stared at each other for half a moment before the walker leaned in, going for a bite of Acacia's shoulder or perhaps her neck. Acacia grabbed it around it's neck and pushed it up, off of her, pulled herself to her feet. A hand caught at the front of her shirt, and tore off a chunk near the midriff. She scrambled away, fell down again, and the walker was on her.

It sunk it's teeth into her ankle before she could even react. Her entire leg lit up like it was on fire. The area normally would've been somewhat protected – a shoe or sock at least, a pant leg. But there wasn't anything to stop it from tearing a chunk of skin and outer flesh straight from her ankle.

Acacia didn't even think. She didn't scream at the pain, or cry, or allow herself to be overcome. She'd seen people go down like this before, and she raised her other foot, brought the shoed heel down on the top of the monster's skull. It knocked it's teeth off of her leg. She brought it up again, and smashed it's face into the floor. Then again. The skull collapsed slightly, but the walker groaned. Again.

Again.

Again.

The head was reduced to a pile of decay-colored mush, laying on the floor. Acacia finally allowed the pain to register, and gave a single scream as she tried to stand. Her bitten leg would barely support her weight. She could feel pain bolting up her leg, her spine, to her brain, telling her to sit-the-fuck-down. But she wouldn't. She knew that there were more walkers, all around her. She had to move. She had to get to safety. Then she could figure something out. Anything.

She tore off the rest of the lower half of her shirt, leaving enough to cover herself, if only barely. She wrapped it around her bite. The pain was bad, but not anything she hadn't felt before. She'd been sliced once, in the stomach. Mostly a shallow wound, but that's what the bite felt like. The pain wasn't as bad as it had been. She could already feel it reduced to a throb, and the rest of her leg had stopped aching. She wondered if that was a side effect of the infection, or if she'd gone into shock.

She tied off the makeshift bandage, noticing that the bleeding had already gone down. She could see her own bits on the floor next to where the walker's head was, and she looked away, feeling nauseous. She limped down the tunnel, keeping as much weight off of her new injury as possible, continuing the way she had been going before.

She had no other option.

She'd figure something out.
I just recently whitelisted someone, and Shon and Aweena should have privileges now. That said, sorry for the delay. Would you mind posting or PMing me your gmail address, so I can make sure it gets taken care of?

Oh, wait, secondary doc. Fallen, you're actually the only one who has privilages for that. Would you mind taking care of it, and giving Shon and Aweena's addresses the ability to?

New post going up soon.
