Personality
Fiercely practical, Miri is someone desired in a pinch, but she’s never been the “fun” one. She dreams, but her dreams are relegated to the back burner at all times – after all, they’re merely dreams. This does not mean she is gloomy or unhappy, but rather that she finds pleasure in what’s attainable and doesn’t bother with faith whatsoever. Romantic stories, religion, myths, ghosts, all those things that people believe in, Miri simply cannot. If there’s a leap that needs to be taken, it’s not one she sees the merit in taking.
Though honor has become something antiquated and alien, Miri stands by her promises and therefore rarely gives them. She does not, however, expect others to keep their words and asks that promises and vows are not made – she’d rather not lose respect for anyone for a common ailment of modern society. A fairly mellow, noncommittal sort of person, Miri doesn’t often get her feathers ruffled and gets along with most on a superficial level. She never gets past the in-depth getting-to-know-you phase, since Miri expects a lot from others –though not nearly as much as she expects from herself.
Mental stimulation in the forms of books is a pleasant distraction, but Miri much prefers the outdoors. She’s by no means skilled with sports, and has never desired to get involved in competitions, but hobbies such as hiking, kayaking, rock-climbing, and similar activities have always been enjoyable. While she does take precautions, Miri often does the aforementioned solo due to her less-than-charismatic persona. Though loneliness sometimes chafes, Miri has never been adept at fostering relationships, particularly the maintenance part.
History
Miri was raised with several siblings in what could only be called a fairly typical working class family: absent, working parents that left their kids to fend for themselves from an early age out of necessity. No cruelty or neglect littered her younger years, though socialization was perhaps lacking due to the frequency with which they moved around. Miri's life went the typical penny-pinching route to community college (high school having been average and not earning scholarships) to become something easy, affordable, and sufficient to support her simple goals. Her life adopted a pattern that she enjoyed for the most part, and she moved easily through the motions.
When she turned 20 and completed her 2-year degree, Miri became restless. She left her current boyfriend for no particular reason except she simply wasn't compelled to stick around, resigned from her job, sold her belongings, and went trekking. Her feet took her along many roads, her backpack first growing lighter as she shed the unneeded items, and then heavier as she acquired desired items. Occasional jobs kept her funds in an acceptable state, and sometimes she spent enough time off the beaten track that she wasn't aware of the date or location.
Two years into her nomadic lifestyle, Miri had lost most contact with her family (though she often sent postcards and took time for phone calls to her mother). Frustration at some yet undiscovered destination began to worm its way into Miri's mind, causing her to stick around a nothing of a town somewhere in West Virginia, waiting at a diner until she felt the pull again. It finally came, compelling her deep into the forested hills, her worn boots struggling through the ravenous underbrush. A tree, gargantuan and dead, formed an open shelter in its broken trunk during a seemingly endless deluge. Sometime in the night, Miri woke to the feeling of trembling earth and people whispering. When she tried to get up, the wall of trunk at her back gave way, sending her toppling into Wonderland - which she entered from a dizzying height amidst the clouds.
A few weeks have passed and, true to her nature, Miri is getting along just fine. Being cautious and a little dazzled, she's mostly staying out of sight. She's met a few Wonderlanders, but hasn't taken up with anyone just yet. She's still working on things.
Crush
"Familiarity breeds contempt, right? So I'll just enjoy the crush from a distance." Other
Always be prepared. It's sometimes surprising what Miri has stashed in her backpack.
