This is a great idea. I love how the concept is broken between medieval times and a modern era. Personally, I would stick to a more medieval kind of Roleplay. This makes character description more fun..to play about with. When it comes down to pokemon, the realistic point of view is one of the better ideas I've seen. I understand the pokemon will have movesets. To make it realistic, wouldn't these have to be learnt over a progressive period of time? Personally I would start out with a Riolu; it's loyal, understanding, and can communicate very well with its owner through telekinesis. It's one of the harder pokemon to train as it is a steel as well as a fighting type pokemon and..Medieval era is more of it's era..than a modern concept pokemon. If I were to choose a modern pokemon; I'd go for a Axew...simply because I love Haxorus :)
