The Nidos or Rhy-whatever have earthquake [which is much better than fissure solely because of the hit rate] and are effective enough without having to use swords dance, so eh. <__<

To be honest, any Pokemon that needs power-ups [except in battle tower scenarios] in order to become useful has already lost, for me.

If it were me, I'd rather grind and save up the slots for something better later on [a Nido-something, perhaps? Rhyhorn?]... Sandslash is great in the beginning, but it becomes a paper behemoth once you get to the later stages of the game. =/

You've got plenty of other options since this is FireRed... Although to be honest, doing some crazy grinding with the basics was what I always did in this game, so eh. =/
