... Luck shenanigans inbound?

Also, I don't think you should worry too much about stats. Although saying an increase or decrease of 1 does give a very precise idea of how much it changes, we aren't really rolling dice or anything, so the numbers aren't something you need to worry about too much.
Astrophel

There were a few children in the scene outside of the building receiving adventurous hopefuls, most of them either playing or watching the duel. However, in the small line at the door, there was a child, likely in his preteens, standing in wait as well; the odd one out in an already-diverse group.

"Hmm," Astrophel knocked on the wooden exterior of the building. It seemed a bit shoddy, as if the city had just set it up a few days ago. He wouldn't have been surprised if it did, but Astrophel doubted that it was so poorly done for it to break under normal conditions. As he was thinking about this, the ring on his right hand let out a faint, pale purple flame-like glow.

"'Twould it not be wiser to stand over yonder?" A youthful voice--not too unlike his own, despite the archaic speech--entered his ears with a windy tone, as if whispered into his ears. Although that was the natural response from the people he knew, the concern was strangely touching to Astrophel when it came from his demonic friend.

"Thanks for worrying about me Aery, but it's fine," he whispered back. In reality, it would sound like Astrophel was talking to himself, but he didn't particularly care.

"F-fool, thy appetency for this one's companionship is going to thy head. 'Twas but to safeguard our contract, naught else."

"Well, thank you anyways, Aesrfel."

While Aesrfel began to spew out abusive words, Astrophel shifted the bag on his back. He could roughly tell where the contents were when he did this, but he'd mainly just taken them for his parents' ease of mind. Useful, yes, but nothing valuable nor anything he was particularly attached to; he'd often lose its contents in an accident, or have it confiscated upon entering a city.

In fact, the latter had almost happened to him at the gates. Since he was convinced that the guards were trying to extort him, Astrophel called them "the slimiest, most disgusting blackguards he'd ever had the displeasure of meeting" and booked it past them into the city. Used to running from his problems, he used the small alleyways and vertical paths(aka, climbing up walls) to escape. Thinking back, that was probably not the wisest choice he could have taken, but he had managed to get far away and deep into the city, and it wasn't likely that they were stupid enough to report that they were chasing a child who ran after they tried to extort him.

... Probably not anyways.
IT BEGINS
Might jump on if my other RP isn't going.
Gods, I know it's helpful to explain, but I have an aversion to regularly-sized text and people have a hard time reading the small text.

I went off on a rant about the varying systems of magic regarding the laws of physics when I wasn't even playing a character that could use it.

like
if that crap were regular sized,
you'd have enough bricks of text to build an apartment complex

@Diexsmiling
the numbers i got were calculated
but man
am i bad at math

Anyways, luck ‘n’ stuff.

Let’s assume that a person’s luck can be represented by a line on a wave graph; above the center is good luck, below is bad luck. Whenever someone’s luck increases above the norm, there will be a “rebound” that pulls their luck down by an equal amount before returning to normal, and vice-versa.

The way a wish works is by forcibly pushing up a person’s present fortune enough to grant the wish(asking for material wealth or something that doesn’t exist is much more costly; the material would have to come from somewhere, and EXTREMELY specific conditions would have to occur for something new to be created). Thus, at some point in the future, their luck will decrease equal to the amount of fortune they used up.

Because of Astrophel’s (un)natural tendency towards misfortune, he is unable to increase his luck unless he decreases it first. Therefore, if he makes a wish to stay safe during a dangerous situation, the events follow this order:

His luck decreases to even lower than before, practically guaranteeing that another unfortunate event is going to affect him => his luck increases, causing the second event to turn in his favor(albeit still possibly dangerous for him) => the two events cancel each other out, returning his luck to normal.
-----
While wish demons do have the ability to both increase and decrease luck, there are two reasons that they generally only increase it:

Firstly, decreasing a person’s luck requires more energy, which they get from feeding on misfortune, than increasing it. Unless the wish demon is altruistic(not a trait that demons normally have), they have no reason to do so.

Secondly, they are only able to manipulate the luck of a willing being; the only people that enter a contracts with wish demons are either greedy or foolish, generally both. Since those people are looking for quick gains, the demons are really only ever given the opportunity to increase luck.

Partially because Astrophel’s perpetually bad luck cancels out those two reasons(unlimited misfortune, making him unlucky actually protects him A.K.A. the unlimited buffet) and partially because he’s actually happy about being his friend(despite what he says), Aery stays with Astra.
