Collab between RogerD & Sundered Echo
The shuttle from Andromeda had just returned Rhea's medical staff and departed only moments before the shuttle with Captain Weston aboard arrived in the bay. The whole process took an irritatingly long time considering that the bay had to be shut and pressurized between each arrival, and this bay was not designed for that. Only once the bay doors had shut could Rhea, Valerie and a small security detail enter to meet their new arrival. Inside the bay, the shuttle he had arrived on looked very out of place - its form very blocky and square next the elegantly curved High Guard drones that took up nearly fifty percent of the bay’s space, though some had obvious battle damage and one was stopped half way through construction.
Rhea immediately recognised the man that stepped out of the shuttle as the same one from the video communication earlier, tacky uniform and all. He appeared to have no equipment of any sort on him save for his badge and a small angular device that looked more like a primitive comm unit than a weapon. That was a very trusting thing to do, and certainly not something Rhea would do. She had expected a sidearm at least. In the absence of that, she had to assume he was a very skilled combatant. No human could really be that trusting of a complete stranger.
“Welcome aboard the Valorous Intent Captain Weston.” If he were Nietzschean, or even respected commonwealth, this would be where she introduced herself by her full name. But he wasn’t and she doubted he’d be interested in her genealogy, and he wouldn’t have a clue what the stereotype was that came with Kenja pride would be either. Normally, she would also be greeting visitors with Lieutenant Mirrors of Starlight at her side as well, but she would not expose these people to the more exotic aliens aboard the crew until she knew it wouldn’t cause issues.
“If you’ll follow me to the observation deck we can discuss the situation in some degree of comfort. This hangar is not designed for this kind of use and it would be best to keep it empty of living beings.”
Peter nodded but could not help as his gaze wandered towards some of the crew, which were decidedly not human. In fact he was fairly certain they looked like robots, lacking any outer skin or semblance of humanity. In fact he was fairly sure Rhea was subtly watching, out of the corner of her eye. So far he’d only glanced at bones protruding out of her uniform, unsure whether they were part of her, or the uniform, although he suspected the former. Short of running any kind of scan – which could easily be interpreted as rude, or some odd breach of protocol, thought it better to ask the question later.
Other than what he saw, could not help but idly wonder if all the aliens onboard were human, or if there were any nonhumans on board. It would be a question he’d ask shortly. His eyes moved left and right as they wandered the hallway.
“So tell Captain. Are all your crew humans or are there any nonhumans on board?”
“The Systems Commonwealth accepts all species willing to join.” Rhea answered carefully.
He smiled he knew a veiled answer when he heard one. “I’m glad to hear that” he replies gleefully. “So would it be safe to assume that you’re keeping nonhumans out of sight, so as not to avoid scaring anyone?”
“Assuming you don’t scare easily, the answer is yes.” Rhea said with a sly smile. “This ships compliment consists primarily of Than, Perseid and Humans. There are several Inari aboard, and a few others of less populous species. I am the only Nietzschean aboard. The species encountered by the Systems Commonwealth haven’t always responded well to the variety encountered within our crews, I am glad you are not among them, however I shall continue to hide the presence of the non-humans until I know more about all of our companions.”
“You know it had never crossed my mind to do the same. I’ll make a note next time I’m on my ship.” Taking a brief pause, “We also have lots of humanoids on board too.” He let that sink in for a minute.
As she answered they were approaching the room, the door opening to reveal a rather plush room. He waited until she sat down, courtesy and all that. Rhea took a seat facing the large window that presently gave a view of the Andromeda’s prow off to the side and the Aurora and Illustrious in the distance ahead. She was careful in phrasing her answer to gauge the man's reaction before giving him any real information.
“It seems to me that none of the ships present here have arrived where they intended. Even if we all used Slipstream drives, I would find it hard to believe that we all suffered the 0.001 percent chance and arrived here, far beyond the known worlds, by accident. Have you been able to discern anything about how we arrived here, or how we might return?”
He shook his head negatively.
“Unfortunately not, but it seems that one of our sister ships – it is still to arrive, has informed us it may be something to do with quantum realities. We are all from other realities.” He held up a hand. “They’re over one hundred years in advance of us in many areas, and this kind of scanning is second nature to them.”
Rhea gave the other captain an incredulous look. “That, sounds ridiculous. Time Travel in the Slipstream is a recorded, if exceedingly rare, phenomena… But alternate dimensions… I’ll believe that when I see it proved.”
“It is quite troubling I have to say, but the Illustrious has had some encounters with beings claiming to be nigh-omnipotent, so they could easily be behind this. Personally even hearing myself say the words, I feel….kinda crazy.”
“You sound it too.” Rhea began before changing her tone a little. It wasn’t a Perseid or Vedran scientist she was dealing with here, he wouldn’t know that Nietzscheans tended to be blunt about things that seemed impossible. “Forgive me if I sound abrupt, but it is Nietzschean nature to be skeptical. Nigh omnipotent beings and alternate dimensions all sound a little far fetched to me. Though on the infinitesimal chance you are right, I relish the chance to be the first Nietzschean to travel through dimensions.”
“As much as it is an opportunity to explore, being a universe away and no way home is somewhat depressing, to say the least. If you know what I mean?”
“I do.” Rhea said. She hadn’t really thought about the fact that she was the only Nietzschean in a mind bendingly large area of space. She had always assumed that after a good tour of duty in the High Guard she’d find a nice Nietzschean alpha male to settle down with. Maybe start a Pride. That would be difficult now, unless she could get back. “I dare say I’d already be the envy of many a Nietzschean with my actions thus far. But its all a waste of time if I never see another of my kind again.”
“You mentioned slipstream, I presume this is how you go faster than light?”
Rhea smiled at that. Slipstream was complicated to explain and not really knowledge he needed right now, but he seemed worthy of at least a cursory explanation. “Slipstream. Its not the best way to travel faster than light… Just the only way. Or so the old saying went until it was apparently proved wrong a few hours ago. We shift into a sort of alternate dimension and travel along gravitational strings between large masses in the universe. Navigation is something more of an artform than a science, when the string encounters a branch, the pilot must decide which route to take in an instant without any indication of which is correct. A machine has a fifty percent chance of choosing correctly. An organic pilot has a ninety-nine point nine nine nine percent chance of choosing correctly. The amount of time spent in slipstream does not relate to distance either. It can be faster to travel to the next galaxy than the next system on occasion.”
“Wow….And I don’t mean to sound…….” Weston took a moment to think about it. “It is almost as though we’re going over basics as things so different where you’re from. I mean if Starfleet could ever utilise slipstream to travel to other galaxies. It is mind boggling. Not sure we’re ready for that yet though.” He paused, before continuing. “Exactly, and I suspect many of us use different forms. We use warp drive for instance which many have thought has similarities to the old idea of the alcubierre drive. But it is different.”
He took a breath. "We invite you aboard our vessel, and are willing to transmit any navigational data or historical data you desire."
“I guess it is turning out to be some kind of party?” He smiled, although it was overlaid with an intense tiredness, and an almost imperceptible sadness. He was hoping the other captain did not notice. “Well what do you think Captain, do you want to cut our discussion short and visit their ship?”
Somehow he knew her answer would be yes, but in delicate situations such as these it paid to wait for an answer.
