Jael had turned back to watch his friend's second attempt at Firebending, but by the end he could only gape. A small part of Jael was wondering if Toku would get in trouble for breaking the wall (way to take the Fire Sage's command to "overcome the wall" literally). But mostly, Jael was simply impressed by his friend.

"That was awesome." Jael said, running over to congratulate.

Faedric too was looking at Toku with a sort of awe. But also, part of him was frightened.

The flames Toku conjured; they were far larger than Faedric's own. Faedric hadn't quite put his all into those flames he conjured. He could've put more effort into his breathing, his stance, his will. But it was not too far from his best. He was a firebending master, and this boy; he had outdone Faedric in an instant.

Faedric knew the Avatar was powerful, but he hadn't anticipated this. Faedric had much power politically, but physically someone had finally surpassed him. No, that wasn't quite true; the boy's form and control and theory were all pathetic. Faedric could still surely defeat him in a duel. But in the future, once Toku had been properly taught, that might not be the case. And that was, quite frankly, frightening.

No! Faedric could not be weak like this. He pushed any fears he had out of his mind. They didn't matter. As long as the Avatar was under Faedric's control, Faedric had nothing to worry about. Quite the contrary; the Avatar was a powerful asset to the Fire Nation. Faedric had to ingratiate himself now, to ensure that the boy remained loyal.

"You should be proud," Faedric said to Toku. "Your power is already at master level. There is still much to learn; a flame does not become a bonfire without kindling it first. But you have a strong foundation to work with. If in the future you have doubts about yourself, remember this moment. You have no need for those doubts."

This was the proper way to go about molding the Avatar. Wise, proper instruction that would make his learning one of quick progress and invoke an expectancy for him to do as asked. Followed by praise for success, which would inspire the boy to do well in the future. Sometimes humans could be rather simple.

A servant had come out to survey the disturbance. "Servant," Faedric said. "Tell the people gathering outside that there is no cause for alarm. I wish to continue my lesson with the Avatar, and do not wish to be disturbed."

He turned back to Toku. "We shall proceed to the next part of the lesson, yes?"
"Hm, I understand your hesitation. Everyone, even us Fire Sages, have great expectations for you. And indeed, you must fulfill them. The world need's its Avatar, and barring an early death there is no way out of the role. I can only surmise that that was the choice made, when the Avatar spirit fused itself with its first human body. The spirits are wise, but not always kind."

"You are the Avatar. You might perhaps think that failing our test said differently, but that is not true. Every nation has its ways to find the Avatar, without fail. Never have the visions of the fire sages failed us on such important matters."

"We knew you were the one, with certainty. We simply desired to test your immediate aptitude. For some Avatars, the other elements come quite easily. For you that is clearly not the case. But the other elements will come later. For now, we will focus on fire."

"Fire is a part of you, and always has been." Faedric's eyes widened, and he put his hand to his heart. "The Avatar can control all four elements, but it is their first they learn that comes most naturally to them. Througout your years, you have bent fire countless times. Fire pours from your limbs, over and over until it becomes instinct. And that instinct remains with you all your life."

"You have not lost that instinct. Your mind has merely clouded over it. But you can part that cloud. You can overcome the wall that blocks your path. You will!" He shouted, attempting to inspire.

"Take five breaths, make your stance, and bend as much fire as you can. Go!"
Jael tactfully looked away from Toku, hoping to spare him the pain of failing in front of a friend.

Faedric simply continued focusing on Toku. "If you say you've done better in the past, I believe you. However, the key to bending is consistency. Before you can rely on your element it must do as you want it to, 100 times out of 100 times."

"Hmph. You are clearly not in balance. This can happen when our fates are torn about by the torrents of reality. Are you, perhaps, having difficulty coming to terms with the new direction your life is taking?"
"No problems? Then show me, how fierce the flame of your soul burns. Muster the largest amount of fire possible. Like so."

Faedric inhaled then punched upwards. A vast, continuous stream of fire shot several yards into the air for a few seconds. Once Faedric finished he looked at Toku expectantly.

"Well? I'm waiting."
Jael stood calmly on the sidelines, watching the beginning of the lesson with mild interest. A lesson between a Fire Sage and the Avatar wasn't something most got to see, but as a non-bender Jael's interest was nothing more than academic. He'd pay attention for now, but if it got boring he'd probably reach for the book in his pocket.

"I am told you have not had any formal Firebending training." Faedric spoke. "So it would be prudent to begin by first explaining the underlying truth of firebending. Firebending is, above all, about strength of will."

"The people of our nation have the strongest of wills. They all desire something; whether it be the tempering of a blade, the acquisition of a warm home, the protection of those close to them, or even the changing of the world. Their will, their desire to achieve those goals; that is what drives them. And firebending is a manifestation of one's own willpower."

"You draw the power to create fire from yourself. The fuel is your willpower. With each blow you strike, you project a part of yourself into the flames. Tell me Toku, do you have a strong will?"
Jael smiled. "Glad you asked. I'd been thinking the same thing. It's a heavy burden, too huge for one person. I'd be happy to support you."

Jael yawned a bit, then leaned back on his bed. "'Course, it's getting pretty late. It was almost sundown when they sent for us. I still think ya should check out the library some time, but right now rest sounds good." He closed his eyes.
"How 'bout I start from the most obvious and work from there?" Toku gave a nod of approval. Jael cleared his throat.

"Ah-hem. The Avatar is the only person in the world that is capable of mastering all four elements." he spoke clearly, like a historian might. "Like all human beings, the Avatar Spirit has existed since time immemorial. It is born, lives its life, then dies before reincarnating into a new life. But unlike every other human, the Avatar is capable of learning how to speak with their own past lives."

"The Avatar's duty is that of a peacekeeper. The Avatar is meant to maintain balance in the world, especially the balance of the Four Nations. The Avatar must prevent people from abusing their power, and protect people's lives and culture. Additionally, the Avatar is the bridge between our world and the world of the Spirits. Balance between humans and spirits must be kept as well."

"For the sake of fulfilling their destiny, the avatar is provided certain special treatment. No official laws, but people are generally taught to treat the Avatar with special kindness and respect. The Avatar typically keeps a symbiotic relationship with each of the four nations. Being provided with skilled bending masters and other favors in exchange for fulfilling their duty. There is also a large amount of authority that comes with the role. People tend to respect the Avatar's decisions, whatever they may be.

Jael relaxed a bit. "That's the gist of it. Beyond that I know a few less important general details. I also know a decent amount about the previous Avatar, and have a passing familiarity with a few of the others. Still, you should probably study up on it. I think the Palace has a library.. Though I suppose we don't have to look into that right away unless you want to."
"Tch, my "folks" are no problem. That official made sure a letter was sent out to them while you were meeting the Fire Sages. They don't know all the details, but I bet they're thrilled I'm staying at the palace."

"And your firebending...what can I tell ya? You don't have a teacher or scrolls, and you like to slack off. Miracle that your firebending's as good as it is. Basically, stop degrading yourself."

Jael wondered how much of his words were being taken to heart. He hoped his friend would start presenting himself better. Being Avatar meant commanding respect, but acting so humble was a good way to throw all that away. He really didn't know the first thing about politics.

That was just secondary though. The most important thing was making sure he took the job I the first place. Jael didn't want to mention it, but bad things happened to Avatars who shirked their duty. Which was one more reason Jael needed to back Toku up.
Toku was so flippant. That would probably never change.

"The Fire Sages are a really big deal, in case you hadn't noticed yet," Jael said incredulously. "You're just gonna ignore them? No way all that prophesizing is false; if it were a lesser event things would be ambiguous. But the coming of the Avatar is the most important event of the century. The signs would be clear as day."

"Look," Jael said with a touch of amusement, "who ever heard of someone bending their element on the first try? Just because you couldn't do it right then and there doesn't mean a thing. It doesn't change the fact that the Avatar is you. It's overwhelming, but don't worry, I've got your back." Jael gave his friend a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
Jael opened the door to their chambers. Smooth wooden floor, two silk beds, a pair of dressers, among other things. It was a very spacious and lavish room, better than even Jael was used to. Jael noticed his friend taking the room in; for someone like Toku, this was probably heaven.

Jael saw Kozai off then closed the door to the hallway, turning his focus to Toku. Jael's thoughts were on the future, and seeing as Toku was still in a state of denial, there was a need to press the issue. Jael took a seat on the side of his bed, and motioned for Toku to sit opposite him.

"So what did the Fire Sages tell you? What happened in your meeting?"
