I'd like a bit more information on her relationship with Atermis and why she's chosen as her deity. Especially since she has a problem with what other gods have done to her.

It's 1930, and the light of the gilded age has faded. An age of excess and luxury has collapsed to a decade of poverty and despair. Faith in governments and economies across the world has fallen, and millions of lives are left lost in a maelstrom of economic turmoil, fanatic ideologies, and the heartbreak of a promised bright future turning into a nightmare. The promises of growth and wealth have come to naught, and now everyone must find a new place in this turbulent time or risk being swallowed by the waves of change.

That's the story on the surface, as everyday people understand it. Unknown to them there are hidden actors pulling the strings from underneath these waves. Ancient and powerful spirits and gods call from their retreats for a great new spiritual age as the light of Christianity wanes. The gods and goddesses of old demand to walk the earth again, and for their names to be on the lips of new followers. Some seek devotion, others blood and revenge. They poke and pull at the veil separating our reality from theirs. They cause loving husbands to murder their family, devout priests to curse their God, and committed killers to renounce their ways and devote themselves to new purposes. Monsters reappear in corners that humans dare to tread. New religious cults are arising, for Athena, Mars, Odin, Eris, Ra and other classical mythological figures. They claim to wield incredible magics and powers from their familiar gods, and are eager to show the world what they are capable of, both good or bad or inbetween. Existing religious orders in Christianity, Islam and Judaism reject these uprising revivalists as demons and lunatics. The chaos in the material world reflects the spiritual, or maybe it's the other way around.

The walls between worlds is crumbling, and anything can come into this reality.

You find yourself caught up in this storm and left with two choices. To either let yourself become a victim of circumstance and see how this wind will take you, or to dare to try and lead the charge and make a stake for yourself in this era of depression and violence. For some this is a nightmare, for others it's an opportunity.

New Haven is a fictional city set off the coast of California. It is considered the jewel of the west coast and a achievement creating a flourishing modern city out of what was once a set of grassy hills and untamed woodland. New Haven is on the cutting edge of society, technology and culture. A burgeoning film and radio industry, aeroplanes and automobiles and one of the hottest immigration spots in the world. It is also directly on the frontline of this spiritual and material cataclysm that's befallen civilization, as both the worst of the depression and religious agitation can be witnessed here.

In this setting a detective agency has been established by an ex cop and catholic priest to begin to investigate and solve the crime epidemic related to the ongoing crisis. Unofficial and with very little public backing, this agency is on the frontlines in attempting to make sense of the coming apart world around it. Montag Detectives Ltd have contacts in this world and the next and are often visited by all sorts of potential dangers.

Your characters are potential recruits for the new detective agency, and may be whomever you wish. Other than having a reason to work and try to solve cases, your character is mostly up to you. Here are some starting rules to help get you started.

On how the myths will work for your characters, each character has a god or goddess they may worship and commune with. This can give them benefits and perks of all sorts depending on what god they communicate with. For example, a character who has chosen Ares would do better in battle while an Aphrodite follower would be more charismatic. Gods aren't collectible cards though, and will require favors and tasks of you in order to maintain their good standings. You can also switch your chosen gods and follow whomever you please of the major pantheons, just keep in mind this can easily anger whomever you left behind. The benefits you get and the relationship with your chosen deity are largely up to you as well and subject to approval.

The only do nots are to not make characters who are omniscient, time warping, or other powers that are too much for a detective style premise to maintain.

I look forward to seeing all of your designs. There is only room for about six people max planned for right now, so please do not take it personally if you are not selected.

I'm @LightComposer and I'm bumping this interest check as I'm going to revive this setting. I'll probably write a new interest check tonight or tomorrow.

Valeria had arrived to the Marrywell entrance in the same volkswagen she had created some time ago. It had been decked out with a few thrusters and exhaust ports to handle much higher speeds than the commercial models allowed for. For no other reason than it looked cool, the tanned girl sported some black shades across her eyes. A grin on her face and a cigarette in the side of her mouth completed her edgy older sister routine.

"What is it they say in America...Howdy! Hallo! Come take a ride, Maria. We have children to torture and witch's brew to make. Hehe!" She'd open the side door for Maria to join her in the passenger seat.

"It is the big patrol day everyone. You're real magical girls working for the academy right now, so wear it with pride and represent everyone well or Ozma will get mad. I hope you made your teams, because you're going to be using them a lot today."

Val would pause to glance at Ozma, noticing that something was up. She knew the redhead would never tell her plans directly, only letting them to be discovered in action. She'd move her sights on to the newcomer Nessie, who had just returned and probably didn't have a group yet.

"Hey! Lochness girl! Come here in the backseat. You can come with me if you want if you don't have a team ready yet."

@FrogRFlowR

Valeria was flattered by Maria's high opinion of her abilities when she remained a fish out of water just as much as Maria if not moreso. The substitute teacher didn't think her position was worth all the formal language, and saying she had 'knowledge' of the Ministry she so loathed would've been insulting had Maria not spoken so carefully.

"Oh it's no problem at all! Of course I can assist you, we're on the faculty together after all! If we cannot understand these students, I'm sure we can mold them into shape with hard steel! I kid, I kid!"

Valeria laughed, and smacked onto Maria's shoulder with her heavy metal arm. A friendly gesture that would leave the teacher's back sore for the evening.

"I suppose I need a team too, so you can count on me. Ozma is off on her own adventures. As usual..."
I'm interested in this, if the OP returns.
@Lewascan2

You will have a lot of homework due when you return.

Valeria's lessons were not clicking like she wanted them to. She had hoped to be the cool teacher that let the students do the fun stuff the more conservative staff would not allow, but things were not so easy. Perhaps she wouldn't be a natural fit for this role as she had thought but she quickly cast those doubts aside.

"Oh I wanted to go easy on ze kinder. Now I am regretting my choices. They performed very well! No problems on the surface."

Valeria greeted Ozma with a wave and her trademark enthusiasm. She'd clap her metal hands together and return her attention to her protesting students. Suzuya's glare did not go unnoticed, and Valeria was tempted to respond back by sticking her tongue at her. She'd have to remind herself she's supposed to be a good role model and Ozma was counting on her. Instead, she'd take all three girls together in a tight group hug enforced by her steely metal arms, bringing them all together. Probably not much more mature, but Valeria was a hugger.

"Listen. My comments were not meant to be so harsh! You destroyed that hulking beast in a single maneuver, very impressive and your power is in no doubt! But the Ministry does not like lone wolves, I learned that the hard way." She'd pause a bit, recalling very specific memories. "It is not about who is strongest or who is weakest, Lilac and Tensi. I thought that way myself once! I am a big angry German war machine, and I can summon anything I want at my disposal! Why would I ever want to work with a team, they'd get in my way! I thought that way for a long time...and then one day my arm was nearly destroyed in the middle of a battle against a Pageless. Ozma actually saved my life there, with her grimoire. Our stories make us strong but stories are not told alone, they are shared in a group. That is what I've learned. To value what the stories of others can bring to you, and they can make the grimoires you carry even stronger."

Valeria blinked after she finished speaking, shocked to hear herself open up so much. She's left wondering if she was spouting complete bullshit or very insightful teacher commentary. She'd let everyone else be the judge of that. She'd release the students and give them a wave goodbye.

"But either way, don't hide your feelings. I appreciate the honesty from you all. Now if you'll excuse me I think I am being called away..."

Maria finally arrived, and summoned Valeria away from her students. She'd give her farewells and last minute commendations before observing the lovely new lady. Drossel had her items to offer to the class and she did not want to get in the way of her. Always had to help a fellow German.

"Don't call me Miss! Val or Valeria is fine! What do you require of me? I don't think you plan to become my student too, ja?"
@Lonewolf685

No. She even said to speak with her if you had questions and she was just sitting on the hood.

Regardless I get it, everyone just wanted the upgrades anyway.

"Never considered being thrown as a method of attack before!"

Riku liked where Akiko was going with her thinking, deflecting strikes from incoming Nephunas all the while with her wide scythe weapon. She'd take offense to the bard's last comment.

"I don't make a habit out of dying! I promise!" Though it's clear she's quite upset over what's happened. She quickly refocused herself onto Akiko's shoulder, braced up like a ball and ready to be catapaulted.

"Okay! Are we doing this on the count of one or threeaaaaAAAH!" She'd get her answer as she finds herself soaring through the air like an arrow.

Nephuna was in sight! She'd raise her scythe high and poised to land a great cleaving strike that would've cut anyone in half. She's oblivious to the large tidal wave of whale powered water that knocked her off her course and caught her up in the wave, slinging her against a pair of rocks. She grunts as she collides with the hard surface painfully. From there she's left as a stranded witness to the ongoing fight beneath her.

The battle before her is incomprehensible with various powerful being unleashing their complex and devastating attacks. Kanbaru's great wave nearly sent her flying and she'd have to stable herself with her scythe. Thomas's attack was most concerning of all. She could barely recognize the boy from Fable she'd grown fond of. He was possessed by that strange woman and his eyes were pure gold, speaking and moving like an entirely different person. A much more violent and bloodthirsty person. When she's recovered she's left stranded on a giant hunk of rock as the battle progressed on without her.

She'd commit herself to helping Thomas, not wanting to see him have to become like that again. She felt this floor was getting to all of them and bringing out the worst in everyone. She was at a lost of actions she could do to change this, left only bearing witness to all the awfulness of this all stakes battle.

I guess I really need to stop fooling around and take this more seriously. For Kiara and Thomas's sake...I'm supposed to be a leader and this is the best I can do?
