In-setting there's at least one occasion of a Familiar being not only not treated like a person but immediately being erased from reality(or at least seemingly so I kind of feel a little bad about having them actually erased so I'm not sure there. ^^;) when her creator decided she had betrayed him.... The creator was at least shot with a huge beam of mana though.
