Akihiko really is lucky that he didn't go to the Tower.

The Tower is basically the Mage Circle that all the big successful families prefer(well one of them), if they do send their children to a Mage Circle for formal thaumaturgical studies. This means that most everyone there is pretty well-off in terms of magical quality and talent.

Theurgy is seen as an "ugly" shortcut quite frequently.

In-setting there's at least one occasion of a Familiar being not only not treated like a person but immediately being erased from reality(or at least seemingly so I kind of feel a little bad about having them actually erased so I'm not sure there. ^^;) when her creator decided she had betrayed him.

... The creator was at least shot with a huge beam of mana though.
