Announcement of Utmost Importance:


I, your almighty and sometimes irrational GM, have decided to speak regarding an issue.

As Arawak and others have brought up a couple of times now, our empires are not nearly large enough to fill 1/4th the galaxy, but the map makes it appear as though they do.

I've decided, therefore, that we should assume the area we are RPing in is only a small part of the alpha quadrant. In other words, we are in a small fraction of a fraction of the galaxy, because space is enormous and it would take hundreds or thousands more years of expansion to actually fill the Alpha Quadrant to it's complete capacity.

Our explorers, it can also be assumed, are not necessarily exploring the part of the galaxy depicted on the map. If you want, we could say that your character has flown off somewhere to the left (or right, or south, or north, or up, or down- it's all subjective in space) of our map to explore the mostly uncharted territories of the Alpha Quadrant.

That is all. You may return to your regularly scheduled programming.


Understood. And makes sense, the galaxy is beyond huge. Even the biggest of our empires are tiny compared to the galaxy as a whole.

Nation Name: The Meknik Union of Worlds

In theory, the Meknik Union of Worlds is governed by a parliament of representatives from each civilized world of the Union, with an elected Prime Minister among them acting as supreme executive with power of veto.

In practice, the Union is a very decentralized nation with considerable autonomy granted to individual worlds and megacorporations within it. More akin to a coalition of oligarchies than a centralized commonwealth, they are more unified by a need for common defense than a common culture or government. But despite the seeming anarchy and near-breakdown of the system, it is a functional compromise for the Mekniks as individual worlds are permitted self-governance while Parliament functions as a common legal overseer and basis for national defense.

During the Establishment Wars, the Union Parliament’s powers rapidly expanded in order to take charge of the war under the conditions that the militarization of planetary assets would be temporary and expire after the war. But after its conclusion and the lack of post-war direction from planetary rulers, the Union as a whole wonders who should take charge in the post-war world. A debate still ongoing today.

The Union Military stands at approximately ten billion standing personnel under arms and over ten thousand warships.

The large size of the Union Army and Fleet is due to large amount of real estate to patrol and protect, as well as several alien worlds to occupy and keep under control as annexation is underway.

The Union Military is divided into the Union Army, Union Fleet, the Planetary Defense Forces.

The PDF are the standing garrison and local militia on every world, charged with the self-defense of their home planet and to hold out until reinforcements from the Union Fleet can arrive. The quality of PDF forces is highly variable based on local funding, infrastructure, and standing military presence in-system, often more reliant on static emplacements and orbital satellites than mobile forces on planet or in orbit.

I'm pretty lenient, so all of those things are acceptable.

I don't have an official number for fleets, because that depends so much on your economy, technology, the type of ships you use, and so on. For example, the Xim have many millions of ships, but that's balanced out by the fact that each of their ships can be killed in a single hit


Alrighty then. I'll still try to err on the side of caution in these matters. I'm here to RP, not "win the game" afterall.

And if that entails losing, I'm not afraid to RP that too.
Okay, still tinkering with nation sheet, but still interested in joining. @HaelA few questions first before I post the Meknik Union:

1) Can I build the Meknik Union at absolute max limit of planets? The idea being they just finished a war with several stellar neighbors at once, and are now trying to consolidate their hold on them. They have a lot of territory, but a fair amount of that is hostile, rebellious, or nuclear cinders. If thats not preferable, I can shrink them down and say they let their enemies be instead of trying to occupy them.

2) What size fleet is permitted? TThe ballpark idea is the Meknik Union Fleet is big, but has a lot of territory to cover and the capital ship fleet is kept strictly in drydock unless in a state of active declared war. But I would still like to know what is reasonable so I don't powergame.

3) Will it be acceptable for the Meknik Union to make nuclear weapons a regular part of it's war arsenal and a pointed danger of fighting their primitive armies on the ground? Instead of spending lives, they are liable to just nuke a heavily defended area and pave it over later with their own stuff. If not, I can work around that. But I think it would be a interesting RP plot hook to have when fighting Mekniks.

Thinking low-tech dog-like hyper-industrial race that got into a war with several of it's galactic neighbors a while ago due to over-expansion and pissing off some more "enlightened" races due to strip-mining garden worlds and extensive usage of WMD's in ground warfare. Now after coming to an uneasy armistance, the Meknik Union of Worlds now wonders "what next?" and "er, how many black ops projects and wildcat colony launches did we really fund when we thought this war was going to be apocalyptic?"

Former desperate underdog conquering empire, now busy trying to clean up it's messes and find new purpose.

I find your proposed system to be simple to learn, yet potentially a great concept to try and execute in-game. Very intriguing.
