"Greetings, ojou-san. Pardon me for the inconvenience of having to share a single meeting room. If you don't mind, I'd be glad to allow you to meet with Mitsumine Ryuunosuke-dono first, before I would seek his audience." Kitsune nodded to the lady. "Oh, pardon me for my manners. My name is Hatamoto Kitsune, a visitor."

"My lord is most gracious to a mere keeper of books and numbers." Hana replied respectfully. This young man was interesting. Judging by the fan he carried and the retainers at his side, it seemed the heir to the Mitsumine was not the only young lord on these grounds. "My name is Hana, here to represent the Mitsumine Master of Coin Matsuran Tenzin. I thank you for your patience, but I doubt the words I bear are worth the same import as yours. If you so wish, I shall be the one to wait."

She had to admit, this was not what he expected the Boar clan to send to the new heir's coronation. Already she was beginning to picture the interplay of personalities collecting here today. Expecting the lord to assert his due precedence, she idly pulled out a stylus and a small vial of ink and opened her red-covered book in front of her to continue her musings on a new form of bookkeeping. Hana wondered if this lord would pay attention to what she was writing, and that it was in a cipher code unlike the usual forms of bookkeeping. Many lords saw themselves above the work of scholars and bureaucrats. Would this one think the same?
Call me interested. NS coming up when I can build one.
Hana stepped onto the grounds of the Mitsumine manor with mild trepidation. It was an honor to represent the capital branch family of the Mitsumine and the family's master of coin indeed, but this was new ground of her. She had heard little of the new heir or what kind of man he was. And it was master Tenzin's order to assess this heir and report back, and if necessary to educate.

Walking up to the gate and knocking softly three times, she then turned to her shoulderbag and shuffled around its contents to remove a few key items. The first was a letter from Master Tenzin to the young heir to recognize his coronation and to explain that the crimson-clad woman was sent in his stead due to age preventing him from leaving the capital, and that she was also here to assist his ascent to power. The second was a personal gift for the lord, a bound book summary of the lands he was to inherit, to better appreciate. The third was one of Hana's private red-covered books, containing her greatest pride and secret. To share it or not to share with her lord? That was the question.

Well, she was looking forward to learning the answers. If she could find them in the midst of all the other envoys to greet the new lord that is.
Thirded. The longer you wait, the more time I have to research how to game a medieval Japanese economy. Or add more to my character. Both work.
Is there room for more nations? I'd like to join in a sci-fi NRP, and I got a couple good ideas up my sleeves.

That would work quite well, Skylar! Given how Ryuunosuke is at the moment not so recognized by all the powers in the Mitsumine lands and the branch family are pretty much ruling things in the Capital, Tenzin could remain at the capital while sending her as his subordinate to keep and eye and court favor with the young heir to appraise him. Hmmm also, her double entry bookkeeping could be something she's still figuring out and doing early tests on so that she can make the breakthrough and employ it for the first time sometime in the RP.

Yeah yeah, I can do all that. For double-entry bookkeeping, it could be that she's still having to deal with the major issue of long-term bonds and loans with interest. She can handle immediate affairs well, but long-term banking and deals are a problem. Then theres also the issue that she goes through a lot of expensive ink and paper for her books, even for a bureaucrat.

Really looking forward to this game. This is gonna be fun!

Hana: Very interesting character as I expected! I quite like Hana, however, I feel like she needs to be toned down a little. At the moment the Heir of the Mitsumine is young and barely coming into his responsibilities... thus him and by extension, his entourage have a lot of leveling up to do. And as she stands, Hana seems like she's already the ultimate version of what she is. I do want her to have the talent and promise to be one of the greatest economist of the realm, however, I don't want her to already be there by the beginning.

Hm. Glad to know I need to done her down rather than scale her abilities up. That way I know what I can grow up into. Okay, how to tone her down:

Reducing her immediate financial savvy and strengthening Master Tenzin's hold over her. Ultimately she is a subordinate to a long-standing Mitsumine servant, and she's an adopted outsider to boot. While she has been nominally accepted, she's withholding major trade secrets from the clan, and thats a serious point of contention.
Name: Hana, "The Crimson Scholar" "The Mistress of Whispers" "That Crazy Bean-Counter Woman"
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Appearance:

Hana is an attractive woman, and not even the folds of the red kimonos she favors can completely cover up curves to rival a geisha. However she does have a branding scar on her left shoulder she refuses to speak of, in the form of a black crow wing. She often wears red kimonos, red being her favorite color.

Personality:
Hana is at first glance a archetypal yamato nadeshiko woman. Dutiful, wise, mature, loyal, humble, all while hiding true steel behind a silken appearance. The last one she has trouble with as she doesn't hesitate to show her skill in economics and accounting. She always strives to be the best she can and doesn't hesitate to rise to a challenge in her field of finances, even if it means stepping out of the conservative role of a traditional woman.

In general, she rarely loses her calm focus and strictly rational insight into the world and people around her, even if it sometimes means she has trouble dealing with unexpected Youkai that interfere in her well-laid plans. However that rigidly rational attitude is being worn away as she has met and fallen in love with her lord, the heir to the Mitsumine Clan, and now works seeking his approval and favor.

Skills and Abilities:
* Innovative Bookkeeper- Hana's first and foremost skill, and the only one she will openly but softly boast of, is her ability to manage the numbers, sums, and finances of the Mitsumine Clan with astounding accuracy and speed unmatched by even the greatest of Imperial Bureaucrats. Not only that, she is actively improving upon her abilities with new financial techniques. Changing age-old systems set by the bureaucrats of the capital with her own unique sets of ciphers and bookkeeping methods. (Double-entry bookkeeping in an era of single-entry accounts)
* Merchant Visionary- While she is merely an assistant to the Master of Coin of the Mitsumine, Hana has some serious authority over the Mitsumine Clan's finances where her master gives her some freedom of action (mostly in recordkeeping and large-scale business transactions). But in other regards she is kept under tight watch by the Master who finds her secrecy involving her books quite suspicious.
* Whispers of Merchants - Hana always stays abreast of economic developments thanks to informants and maintaining a regular economic journal of all goods across the Imperial domains. And in the process quite a few rumors and pieces of information also like to fall into her lap.

Possessions and Assets:
Hana always carries with her a satchel laden with books, ink, and a quill, so she may write numbers or notes whenever needed. Her accounting books are in ciphers and organization only she can comprehend, with techniques unheard of by even Imperial Bureaucrats held within their bound pages.

Hana has a friendly rivalry with a Yuki-onna (Snow Girl) accountant of the Tiger Clan, who is one of the few that can rival her in financial skill and ability. While the two frequently fight and duel over tariffs, trade, and subverting businesses and guilds to their sway, the two are respectable friends on a personal level. The bored Yuki-Onna finds amusement in this human game of money now that she has found a strong opponent while Hana uses her opponent as a whetstone to sharpen her abilities against, and the two often swap stories and juicy information when the two meet. Yet for all their friendship, they don't know eachother by name. Merely the "Crimson Scholar" versus "The Frost Dancer". And both would prefer to keep it that way.

Hana is also able to tap into Master Tenzin's informants regarding financial and trade affairs. But such informants also report to the Master of Coin.

Bio: Hana is tight-lipped about where she came from and what her original birth family name was. She considers her true birth, and wakening to the field of trade and coin, to be when she was adopted by a wandering merchant from a foreign land at the age of 10, and she considers him to be the origin of all her ideas and way of thinking as they traveled and traded together as teacher and student. Then one day after reaching the age of 16, the trader disappeared, leaving Hana with his cart and all worldly possessions. In hindsight, Hana wonders if the merchant may have been a spirit of some sort, and refuses to speak of his name.

From there, Hana found herself adopted again by a major merchant guild of the Mitsumine Clan, when in her dealings she met the aged Master of Coin Matsuran Tenzin. Tenzen enlisted her as an assistant to replace his previous incompetent one upon seeing her make transactions in her hidden journals. For the next three years, it was a dance of interactions between the two as the old master Tenzin turned a wandering trader into a scholarly bureaucrat able to run the complex affairs of an entire clan, whilst trying to obtain her secrets for himself. To his amusement, he has so far failed despite his best efforts, and thus has kept Hana as a close assistant to watch her work and try to decipher her unusual skill. He keeps her so close, that he brought her to the clan heir's coronation just to show off his protege and point out how unusual she is.

And it was there she fell in love with her lord and master. Further driving her to succeed and aid in the Mitsumine Clan's rise of new power to obtain recognition and approval from her lord. Her position could not be more precarious. She is held in suspicion by some quarters of the clan for being an adopted outsider, many seek the secrets of accounting and finance she knows, and even her own master keeps watch over her actions. She merely thinks of it as challenges to rise to, if she is to be accepted by her lord.
Hmm. From what I'm reading here, economically it seems that the Mitsumine Clan stands more as an industrial and wealth-driven clan compared to its war and trade based major neighbors, plus a minor tourism boost from spiritual sites.

Steel, plus appropriate smelters and blacksmiths, and direct supplies of silver to be minted into coins or jewelry. Plus a decent food supply supported by major imports. All of that means....damn, we're like the Lannisters of this setting!

Now how to make my accountant character relevant here.... Perhaps she comes from the capital as a assistant to the heir's most trusted master of coin serving the heir, and is given to the young lord to balance his martial power with awareness of the finances of running such a large clan? Because regardless of how much power he may have, an army still runs on its stomach. And even the most mighty of samurai still eats the same rice as a farmer.

I am going to have fun playing medieval economics here. :)

^ I like your character very much.

Heh.

In a supernatural Japan setting filled with supernatural beings, spiritual powers, samurai, ninjas, rivaling lords, epic swordplay, centered around the rise of a fledgling young heir with the potential to change the world with the power within his body, I am playing the accountant.

I like a good challenge.
