Samantha

The basket fell from Samantha's hands, landing with a dull thud on the worn dirt roads. Of all the days, after all this time, why now? She was being chased by two men; men who she presumed were there to take her back. The mere assumption of having to go back to that place was enough to make her want to vomit and yell. Biting back a blood curdling scream at the thought, the tangy taste of blood from biting too hard slowly seeped into her mouth.

Not a sound, be swift.

She dodged and weaved amongst the crowd, trying to make it to the woods. If she could just make it to the ridgeline she would be golden. There was only a slim chance, she hoped anyways, they knew the area as intimately as she did. Spending close to half a decade here tends to familiarize someone with a place. Sam could run with the best of them. Not much of a fighter but man could she sprint. A left here, just around this building, yes just one more and I’ll b-

A sickening crunch and suddenly she crumpled to the ground. Her ears rang, the taste of blood rushing into her mouth at this point. Metallic, overwhelming.

“You stupid fuck! We were supposed to bring em’ back mostly okay! You dumb..” The trail of swearing trailed off quickly as her eyes fluttered, threatening to close. She had crumpled to the ground, tenderly and slowly reaching to touch her head. She had been hit with something..fuck. She was so close. So so close. Everything went black before she could even let out a word.

When Sam awoke, the world felt bleary. There was so much noise and it was so bright, just too bright. Bright? Then where was she? It was never bright in..

Her eyes snapped open at the thought. Quickly she scanned her surroundings. Of course she was in a cage. However it wasn't where she really thought she was. Shuffling closer to the bars, she gingerly peered out. It was hard to glean off any information based on her immediate vicinity. If it wasn’t for the fact that she was in fact still in a cage, she would almost sigh with relief. At least she wasn’t being dragged back “home”. If this was worse though was yet to be determined.

Sam winced as the loud booming voice spoke to her and the other unfortunate souls in these cages. The resounding static in her ears made it almost impossible to listen to what the man said. She needed to listen though, this could be life or death.

“..you have one great reason to fight!”

Reality washed over Sam like a cold blanket, lighting all of her senses in an instant. Ah. Similar. A blur of movement happened in the corner of her eye, causing her to whip around. A young man broke from his confinement with what looked like relative ease. Sam turned back just as quickly to look at her own door. A fight hm? Being stuck in this cage would be an instant game over. The feeling of claustrophobia descended upon her almost immediately. It was almost like she couldn’t breath, the tightness in her chest threatening to crush her organs. With an almost animalistic scream she kicked at her door and it swung open as well.

Oh thank god.

Scrambling out, she took a defense route and started out further away from everyone. Her whole body was tense and waiting for anyone else to really make a move towards her. She was ready to sprint at a moment's notice.

Sora Kimuri

Sora sighed, clearly frustrated. After a long day for her, the last thing she wanted to do was go out. However Senka had different plans. She wouldn’t stop chattering about a nearby sighting, and how important it was to go. Sora had never actually bothered to show up for many of the fights. Not out of fear really, oddly enough most of the time it never bothered her. Just the mere thought of having to put in the effort rather than going to bed or studying..that was a whole other story. She would much rather just focus on being “normal” and moving forward with school. Fate had other plans though, and fate just happened to be named Senka.

A small jingle played from the kitchen, prompting Sora to get up. It was the hunters chat, and she knew she probably shouldn’t ignore it. After a bit of searching she found it and opened up the text.

“Hmm there's some weird stuff going down in the woods just outside of town. Ukiko seems concerned, so it’s probably a good bet to head over there. Damn. I was comfy too.” She said, quickly grabbing her coat and shoes. It was a miracle she was even added to the group chat, but that's a story for another day. She was just thankful she got involved and added in something, even if she didn’t outwardly project it. She grabbed Senka on the way out the door, earning a small yelp from the fan.

“Geezus you could be a bit more considerate of how you treat me. I'm delicate, you know, you should treat me like a precious item.” Senka declared smugly.

“Maybe you should hush. Be grateful I'm going at all”

“You know very well you don’t have a choice in the matter do you? Thought so. Hurry up, we're gonna be late like always!” Senka chidded. Sora rolled her eyes, and hurriedly started off on her bike. Thankfully it wasn’t a far ride out from her place to the meeting spot. She already said that someone else had confirmed themselves for this particular mission in the chat as well. Senka was right, she was going to be late. Again. Like always. Groaning loudly she peddled faster.

As Sora approached, she saw the group of people gathered. Noticing them as the other hunters she rode up to them and waved. After getting off her bike she quickly noticed the line of sluggish people trudging off into the woods. Like a line of ants blindly marching where told. Ah. That would be what we're here to deal with.

Without wasting another beat, Sora transformed. Her normally blonde hair poofed out behind her into pink curling twintails. A very frilly blue white and pink outfit replaced her drab school outfit she hadn't bothered changing out of. She never got used to how...different she looked.

“I’m here too, hope I'm not super late. Let’s do this. Whatever this is. “ She gestured to the weird conga line of zombie people.

@LuckyBlackCat I went ahead and updated it! Ty for the feedback

I’m super into this, I can have a character sheet up in the next day or two <3

The last anime I watched was Vampire in the Garden
Admittedly, Yvene was having a bit of an out of body experience. Boarding the tram triggered a bit of an internal panicked reaction. In no way was she ready to face death, she may have resigned herself to the fate of the ship yes. However, that was many many years of living alone in solitude. No chance, well. Other than the ship going down but truthfully it would still float..whatever. No chance of being hurled at high speeds into a metal wall. She fell silent, shuffling onto the tram and grabbing onto a nearby pole to steady herself. She hoped that on the outside she felt and looked composed, just silent was all. Yvene was clutching that pole with all her might though, hoping it might mitigate some of the damage if they do happen to go flying.

Of course, the tram had to come to a screeching halt and she barely had any time to say a word or think before she saw Felix go flying into the windshield. Her lips were sealed shut, not saying a word or uttering a condolence. She was too terrified to really help him much. Her attention then whipped over to catch a brief glimpse of something bolting off the tram, though she could not catch exactly what it was. Sighing, she turned back to see the others already regrouping. Felix was fine and Typhon was seemingly scooping out the entrance way. After giving a clear signal, Yvene ran off the tram as quickly as possible, taking a quick look around. Yvene barely went to the med bay, not too keen on doctors or talking with anyone. There weren't too many ways to hurt yourself in a prison cell unless you were trying too. She had no intention of making a fuss or creating the need to speak with other people.

Tuning back into the conversation around her, she heard Ziola mentioning a cat. Was that the blob she had seen earlier? It was hard to get a look between the dissociation and the dark tram. Hopefully it was harmless, maybe it just needed to hitch a ride. That or possibly it was hanging out on the tram and they disturbed its resting spot. Something else that really ate at her mind as well, they have cats on board? Yvene bit her lip, to stop herself from clearly overthinking. There was more to focus on then the cat. If it comes back then they will deal with it then.

They made their way through the med bay, as it seemed just as chaotic as the cell block they were in before. None of the medical staff seemed to care that they were there, just focused on the patients they had. She was grateful no one was up their asses about being here. Not like she was going to leave if told anyways, not a chance in hell. Personnel were scrambling, gauze and disinfectant in hand as they moved to treat the wounded and sick. Yvene could only imagine what was going on, and could only think back to the coughing and the implied plague outbreak from before. Lowering her head she followed the group as they entered into the Doctor's office.

Ah. The cat thing was in here. She heard Felix speak about it first, mentioning to Ziola he had found the cat she saw. Moving forward to get a better look, sure enough there was a cat like thing. Wasn't so much a cat but a cat like girl instead. Felix seemed to relax and not do anything about it, so it couldn’t be that much of a threat. Right? It didn't really seem normal though, obviously. Something felt familiar, in specific terms but Yvene couldn’t place it. This was a Saphiste girl wasn't it? Maybe. It was hard to think straight, especially when her head was still a bit clouded as she tried to not think too deeply about everything going on. Was it a defense mechanism? Sure. Probably.

“Doctor. Nice to see you.” Yvene spoke, not wanting to be rude.

The doc was indeed taking them in. Though she wasn’t sure if the doctor was doing this out of the goodness of her heart or because they simply showed up and she had no choice. Either way though.

It was quite the interesting little group they had gathered. Yvene did not have much time to evaluate her now sudden companions before they needed to move. Leaving was of course the most pressing issue, but she wasn’t exactly sure about the others. Two other Tulaks and a human seemingly. Oh well. There was no time to think more on the matter, they needed to move. As the male Tulak rather eloquently pointed out before knocking another inmate flat on their ass, everyone here was a prime target. Rage is an emotion that spares none and mixed with confusion is even more dangerous.

Grateful she was even moving and not being left to just die alone and pathetically in her cell, she swiftly followed the mechanic into the side door he had pointed out. As she stepped in she glimpsed over at the Sentries who were advancing quickly. Every gun shot made her jump just a tad, knowing well and true that could have been her on the other end. Letting out small muttering of swears and prayers only those really close to her could have heard, she dipped further into the maintenance tunnels.

“Thankfully, even among the engineers I’m one of the only people that knows how to navigate this maze without a map. Even if we’re followed they shouldn’t be able to catch up too easily.” The mechanic remarked. Yvene let out a sigh of relief. She was silently worried they were just going in circles.

“Well I am glad you know where we are because I haven’t the faintest of clues. My sense of direction is horrid.” She said, careful to make sure she stayed close enough with the group. Occasionally she would brush against an exposed pipe that was hot, causing her to bite her lip so she wouldn’t complain about the pain. Eventually they had made it an old hatch that the mechanic busted down so they could get through. Stepping out of the tunnels she sighed, taking a look around. Though there wasn’t much to see until suddenly someone flicked on the lights. Before her lay a dilapidated looking tram. Clearly it had not been used in a very, very long time. While the mechanic moved to go fix the tram, Yvene wandered slowly around the platform trying to collect her thoughts. A tiny rat scampered up to her and immediately darted away upon realizing she did not have, nor was food. Chuckling a bit she watched them run around. Rats never scared her, she shared homes with them for most of her childhood. Sides, it was nice to see life other than them. Finally someone spoke up, drawing her attention back to the others.

As Felix introduced herself, she gave a tiny smile. “I'm Yvene. I’ve been imprisoned here for reasons too.” She shrugged, not really wanting to get super friendly with these people. Not yet anyways, who knows what was going to go down.

“It’s nice to meet you..and you.” She said, turning to each of the two Tulaks, extending her hands to both as a sign of grace and politeness. She’d try to be at least a little civil.

She then jumped a little as she heard the tram whirr back to life and the old mechanical voice spokeout. "De-de-de-stination set: Medical....Ple-e-ease keep all ha-nds o....the tram will be departing the sta... mome-me-me-ntarily."

“Oh gods that is horribly creepy.” She said mindlessly, not fully realizing she stated that aloud until a moment later. Oh well. It was true, she was worried that it would even take them five meters before exploding or something ridiculous like that. She hesitated before looking back at the others, clearly not wanting to get on first.
Yvene fell forward just a bit as she was still slumped against the door before it clicked open. Correcting her posture immediately she stood up and looked at the open doorway, the reality of what was going on still not setting in. Gods, how long had it been since she had seen the door open? Since she was able to step out into the hallways? Not since they dragged her kicking and screaming the first time. It felt wrong almost, as over the course of however long this voyage was she had been trained into being complicit and staying put.

Before any thoughts could be formulated she heard a loud metal on metal clashing sound out before the lights suddenly went out. For a moment the cell block was pitch black before the red eerie lights started up again.

“Oh so it's all going to bloody hell” She muttered under her breath, letting loose a string of curses in her native language. Yells of panic and joy could be heard as she pivoted around, looking back at the equipment pod that staud tauntingly above her head every day. The only thing she had on her at her time of arrest was a small jeweled lanyard. It had a delicate engraving on the silver metal lantern piece that hung on the end. It was tiny enough that Yvene could store it in the most inconspicuous of places and it was not noticeable. It held no real currency value, not much anyway. Purely was a keepsake she liked to keep near and dear. It was worn and spots of rust that she could not quite remove seemed to spread across the old metal. It clattered to the ground once the pod opened and she dove down, grabbing it quickly. Smiling lightly she tucked it safely into her top and once again made her way back to the door frame. Why was she hesitating so much? She had daydreamed extensively about being able to wander around again freely.

Hesitation however only lasted for a moment before she went strolling out into the hallways. Although she wished it was under better circumstances, it was still nice to roam free. Even if death loomed just down the hallway. The metallic stench hit her nose causing her to recoil just a bit. It was hard to tell from the mostly sealed cells but out here it smelt like death. There was no doubt this was a do or die situation. She scrunched her nose slightly, before looking over to the person who set her free. Or at least who she had assumed set her free as they looked like a mechanic rather than one of the ragtag looking inmates.

“Maybe if we can let Dr. Bursmir know what’s going on she can do something about whatever’s spreading through the ship. I don’t know, this wasn’t exactly in the handbook.”

At the mention of whatever is spreading Yvene became acutely aware of the coughing that seemed to be resounding through this block. The pieces suddenly snapped together cognitively for her as she realized why this might be happening. Though not all of the information seemed apparent it was still pretty obvious. Truly also all the more worrisome.

“Oh. Oh. Is..this why the guards are clearing us out? I'm not coughing. I swear I’m not coughing.” She grimaced, moving to cover her mouth and nose. She recoiled a bit, moving closer to her cell door again so she was away from other people, least the most she could be. They needed to leave though. No doubt the “cleaning” would sweep over this way and she wanted to be gone for that.

“Okay. So the doctor. Where is her office, or the sector she works in? I rarely speak with her, and if I do she comes to me. We should move. Probably now.” She paused for a minute before laughing. “Oh and thank you for this. For freeing us, you didn’t really have to but you did, even knowing the risk.” As the last words left her lips Yvenes entire body froze, as all of her cells seemed to vibrate in response. A guttural roar seemed to echo through the ship. It wasn’t super audible but it still made her tear up slightly, the sound triggering a pure emotional response which was unusual. Yvene had to root herself in place to not go chasing after it, this distressed noise. She felt the innate need to do so, but managed to stay in one spot.

“We really need to go.”
