I made it through finals! :D So, I figured I'd get a post up.
Once the first years were more or less settled in their line to the stool where the hat was sitting, an elderly woman in long black robes and a formal-looking pointy black hat welcomed everyone to the school, made a few announcements, and introduced a new member of the faculty named Charlie Weasley before signalling the beginning of the Sorting Ceremony. With a last name beginning with the letter C, Dani was sure to be up sooner than she wished.

While she waited for her name to be called, Dani couldn't help but look at everything around. The ceiling was obscured by a few wisps of what appeared to be clouds here and there, with a brilliant white orb that was probably supposed to be the moon shining through every so often. All in all, it wouldn't have been anymore spectacular than any other wonderfully-designed ceiling, but the wisps themselves seemed to move as if pushed by an invisible wind.

The other things she paid explicit attention to was the Sorting Hat itself. Though it sounded rather jovial when it had sung earlier that evening and when it was shouting out the House the current student would go into, it had a distinctly grumpy look about it that unnerved her, even though her logic told her that it was probably just due to age, and that it was nothing to be concerned about.

All too soon, Dani heard her name called, and, after a moment of hesitation, began walking to the stool. Though she wasn't that far from where the Hat rested, the walk seemed to take forever, and she felt as though every single eye in the room was focused on her as she took a moment to climb up onto the stool, her legs being too short to allow her to just sit down. The Hat was then placed onto her head, the felt covering all the way down past her nose.

As the Hat touched her head, it seemed to come to life, squirming a bit as if situating itself more comfortably. "Well, aren't you a little thing?" the Hat said jovially. "Perhaps a trait well-suited to Slytherin, though it doesn't seem you have the cunning or ambition necessary to pull it off, especially not without any background knowledge about magic. T'would be like dropping you off into the pirahna pond."

Dani felt a momentary spark of hope rise being being dashed out. Being in the same House as Acacia was sure to have been nice. "Now, now, don't you worry, girl," the Hat continued, chuckling softly. "You'll make plenty of friends in your House. After all, you have a big heart, even if it is hard for you to show it through words. No, I'm certain that its... Hufflepuff!" At that, the hat was removed from her head and she slipped off the stool, heading towards the table where students were currently cheering loudly.

Once she was seated at the table, a few of the Hufflepuff members introduced themselves, including the prefects. Dani nodded along, not bothering at the moment to pull out her whiteboard and respond. They seemed to take it as nerves, not seeming to find it rude that she didn't respond in kind. Whatever it was, Dani was glad that they let it pass. She really didn't want to have to explain that she was mute a million different times if she could avoid it.

After that was out of the way, however, they all went back to watching the Sorting Ceremony, just in time for Dani witness Acacia getting sorted into Slytherin as expected. Several more students were called and sorted before the next Hufflepuff was sorted, a girl named Pearleane Pompaque. The older girls around greeted her with compliments on her fashion and hair as she arrived and sat down, ending up next to Dani by coincidence. Dani waved, but didn't otherwise try to communicate as the Sorting Ceremony continued.
I am here as well. Finals are starting, so things are going to be slow on my end.
From Acacia's explanation of the other Houses, Dani was fairly certain that she would end up in one of them, which gave her some measure of comfort. She had entertained the notion that she wouldn't have fit in in any of the Houses, especially considering the fact that she had no previous experience with magic. Which House she would actually end up in was another question entirely, as she didn't consider herself to be exceptionally smart nor hardworking.

The excitement in Acacia's voice resurged when the topic shifted towards textbooks. Dani wouldn't have exactly pegged her as a bookworm, though it was rather evident that she was passionate about learning. Just more evidence that one couldn't judge a book by its cover, she supposed.

"I've never seen one, no," Dani wrote, interested in where the conversation would lead. Unfortunately, before the conversation could be continued further, the professor that had been standing in the doorway announced that they were approaching their destination and should begin grabbing their luggage and preparing to disembark, with a reminder that first years were to follow Professor Sinistra.

Silently, Professor Sinistra led them down to a group of waiting boats that began moving down the river once everyone was boarded, some, like Dani, a little more apprehensively than others. Before too long, the self-propelled boats rounded a bend, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry visible above and before them. From there, the boats passed into a hidden cove where the students dismounted and were lead up the stairs into the building itself.

After traveling up what seemed an eternity of stairs, they arrived on the stage in the Great Hall with four large tables stretched out below them for the students of the various Houses and the table where the staff sat above and behind the stage. In the center of the stage sat a stool with a felt hat on it, clearly the fabled Sorting Hat. Anxiously, Dani awaited her turn at donning the hat to hear which House it would put her in.
Just to clarify, but, unless the professor could see Dani, it would appear that there were only two people in the cart at most, as Dani is mute. :3

Also, Happy Thanksgiving as well! :D
Dani was honestly a bit surprised by the severity of Acacia's disdain for Gryffindor, as the man from the Ministry had presented all of the Houses as more or less equal, though it was entirely possible that he was supposed to present an unbiased opinion to avoid giving the students the impression that one House was significantly better than the others. Acacia's opinion seemed to be more honest and reliable, especially concerning the fact that she had two brothers in the House.

In short, Dani found herself feeling a little apprehensive about the possiblity of her ending up in Gryffindor. There was almost no way she was going to end up in Slytherin, as she wasn't a very good leader-type person. "What about the other two?" Dani wrote on her board, feeling that she was probably going to end up in one of those and wanting to know what they were like. "Are they as bad as Gryffindor?"

It was then that Acacia replied to Luke's offer of joining him in meeting new people on the train, explaining that she wanted to look at the textbooks and that there would be plenty of time to meet new people once they arrived. "I'll stay here for now. Writing and walking is hard to do at the same time," Dani wrote, showing the board to the both of them.

Almost immediately after, an individual who was obviously a member of the faculty stuck her head into the cart and advised Luke to move quickly if he was in fact planning on going to a different cart, citing their proximity to Hogwarts and a sharp bend down the track as reasons for her advice. What was more unnerving than her sudden appearance was the fact that she didn't seem to be in a hurry to leave afterwards, providing, at least for Dani, a feeling of discomfort.

She tried to ignore it, however, continuing her conversation with Acacia. "Which textbooks are you interested in the most?" Dani wrote, turning to Acacia once they knew what her decision on the matter was. She did hope that Luke wouldn't be upset with her, but he hadn't spoken up much at all, and so she wasn't as concerned as she normally would have been.
Sorry it took me so long, but I had a crazy week of homework and studying last week. :D
Just as Dani began to feel that maybe she had made a mistake in declaring her ignorance of the magical world, Acacia surprised her by leaning into Dani's "bubble" so to speak and answering her question with excitement and, possibly excessive, friendliness. But Dani didn't really find it was weird as she found it sort of comforting. At least she hadn't offended Acacia, and it seemed as though they might actually become friends.

Though the potential discussion of spells interested her to a large degree, Dani figured that it might be best to stick to the subject she knew the most about, relatively speaking anyway. Her lack of knowledge wouldn't have made for much of a discussion anyway. "I don't have any siblings," Dani wrote, pausing to make sure that Acacia and Luke saw the board before erasing it so that she could write more. "Are they really that bad?" She had heard stories from some of her friends back home, but it has seemed as though there was no real consensus on whether or not siblings were a bad thing.

It was about then that Luke chimed in that he was looking forward to eeting new people, though he lapsed back into silence again and seemed to lose interest in the conversation until Gryffindor was mentioned. Though the man from the Ministry had explained to her what the houses were, Dani wasn't entirely sure what the differences between them were or anything along those lines. So, taking another chance of embarrassing herself due to her ignorance, she asked, "What's so bad about Gryffindor?" From Acacia's tone, whatever it was couldn't be minor.

Acacia's slightly-frightening, dark tone was replaced by her previous cheery one almost immediately after mentioning Gryffindor, offering to help explain some things that Dani might have questions about, particularly concerning the houses, as that was what her and Luke had been discussing before. "Well, I know about the houses, but not the differences," she wrote, feeling a little more comfortable exposing her ignorance now that there had been no negative repercussions for doing so.

Before Acacia could respond, Luke stood up and mentioned that he was bored and going to go and see if he could meet new people. Instead of responding, Dani looked to Acacia to see what she wanted to do. Meeting new people was always awkward for her, at least when she was by herself. If Acacia went, she would go because Acacia could tell people that she was mute and introduce her. But if she didn't want to go, then Dani wouldn't go.
I'm still around. Forgot to say so last night. :3
Acacia was sitting quietly as the Hogwarts Express started to move, unsure where to take their current conversation. Perhaps she should just open her luggage and start reading through one of those books she bought. It would give her a head start over the other sudents, and she would gladly welcome any edge she could get. Plus, she was never one for this friendly socializing thing all that much. However, before she could act on her thoughts, a girl was shoved roughly into the room by some of the people outside that were still getting settled and trying to get to wherever they were going. Blue eyes, brown hair...sort of a vulnerable look to her, though that was probably just her imagination. Still, she got the feeling that she might not like this girl all that much.

She expected her to say something. That would have been the normal thing to do here. Acacia was somewhat surprised at what she did though, and a bit confused. The girl, who was apparently named Dani, took out a marker and began to write on it. Could she not speak or something? Maybe she was just nervous. She was sure there was some magic that could help with that. Whatever the case though, she supposed she should say something before the silence got awkward.

"Acacia Coronet," She replied with a friendly smile. "Pleasure to meet you, Dani." She wondering if asking about the board would be awkward or something. Not that she actually cared in the end, but she was trying to build a repuation here. Might as well see what happened at least. "So, if I may ask, what's with the board?" She almost added some snide remark about it, but managed to contain herself. She was trying to be friendly here.

~~~
"That's a pretty name," Dani wrote, a little surprised by how exotic it sounded. More than that, however, was the swirl of colors that it sent rushing through her mind when it was said out loud. A vibrant mix of purples, blues, and greens all flowing as if in a dance. Yes, Dani could say with a certainty that Acacia was indeed a pretty name. The girl's last name, Coronet, wasn't nearly as pretty as her first name was, though it did add a splash of warmth to the overall image, namely by adding a few orange and red shades to the mix.
"I suppose that I should say that my last name is Carson to be fair," Dani wrote, feeling that she didn't really give a proper introduction as Acacia had, being used to giving more informal introductions. Acacia certainly did have a... "proper" air about her. Hopefully Dani wouldn't be offensive to the other girl.
Acacia asking about the whiteboard kept Dani from really contemplating why the boy with brown hair hadn't yet spoken up apart from the thought that he might just be a silent kind of guy. "I'm mute, so I can't speak at all," she wrote after erasing the board. This time she made sure to show it to both of them, as answering the same question twice tended to get annoying fairly quickly.
"If you don't mind my asking," Dani wrote, "what are you looking forward to this year? I'm rather new to the whole thing." Dani did feel a little hesitant about admitting her ignorance concerning everything magical, but she figured that it would be better to get some insight from someone who seemed to know what was going on than to hold onto her pride.
