I already messed with it some. Any better? Is it simply her thoughts/speaking--which is fire brick red? Or is it the label at the top? Cause I messed with both, but I'm not sure if both are the problem.

Hey folks, if I could make a suggest to those who use colored dialogue: Please stay away from dark colors because they are just hard to read.

Unless there is a way to change it that I don't know about, the background color on here is already dark gray. So...dark font color on dark bg = no bueno.

And while you might not think "red" is a dark color, it doesn't contrast well with dark bg.

Anyway, just my two credits worth. Gracias mi amigos!

Hmm, I thought it was bright enough. I keep my screen just one notch above the darkest setting, and I can read it fine. Especially if I set it to the normal settings--which is honestly, too bright for my eyes. I can try and play around with it, though, if a lot of people have issues with it. I just don't want a bright red color. /8

ois was making rounds--again--on both the Hydroponic Center and Eden. While all the reports had repeatedly come back pristine, she needed something to do to distract her from the reality of the situation that she was leaving behind everything that she had come to know in the past twenty-eight years. So she would check it all again... and again... and again. From the current stocks of manure to the already budding fruits and vegetables. They couldn't very well leave Earth--her stomach lurched again at the thought--without already producing a steady gross of foods and herbs for the working crew. What they brought fresh would only last so long and the reserves were for emergencies, not because she couldn't get the botany team together.

Thankfully, the gardens had been seeded several months ahead of the intended launch date to ensure everything would be going strong from the start. She had nary a problem to truly concern her, since she had not only the best technology at her disposal but also the best teams of scientists and botanists she had ever had the pleasure of meeting. It was astounding what the Genesis Project had been able to do with everyone working together. She wondered that it had taken nothing less than the threat of humanity's total extinction to bring everyone together. She didn't understand people most times and she wasn't sure she ever would in her lifetime. Especially now that the majority of them would seen be wiped out--

Just stop. Stop thinking about it, before you drive yourself insane. It always came back around to that. She was already struggling with the survivor's guilt and the deed had yet to be done. But she knew that it would come to pass. They made sure that everyone knew this wasn't a drill. This was actually happening. No one was going to wake up tomorrow, back in their old lives. None of her brothers or sisters or the kind couple who had cared for her back on that small farm would be joining her. Who was left to care for the orphans created from the Devastator's first contact with humanity? The Holts had been one in a million as far as Rois was concerned; that's one reason she took their last name as her own when she came of age. Nevertheless, she hadn't been able to bring them with her on this trip. They didn't meet the requirements.

Moving away from one of the monitors that listed the approximate moisture and nutrients present in the current subsection of the garden, Rois moved to gaze at the apiary. It eased her mind to watch the bees buzz from bud to bud, and before long her mind was drifting off into nostalgia of her time growing up. She would always be grateful to them for getting her here. There weren't many in her situation that had been given the opportunities in life that she had, and she knew it. She'd taken every chance and ran with it. As fast and as far as she could, and look where she was now. The head botanist for the whole Ark. She knew they were proud of her, and that helped get her through it. She had to focus on the positive because it was too easy to let the negative become overwhelming.

It wasn't long before the sounding of the ship's alarm brought her back to the crushing reality. Rois was confused as the red lights shown around the room, and she ran to access one of the nearby consoles only to find that they were locked. She heard the call overhead. "...battlestations..." and her eyes went wide. They weren't supposed to be here yet, not unless Mars had fallen. At least, that was her limited understanding of the military's strategy for all the Arks. A force was sent to be a distraction while the Arks made their way to the Eye of Thea. Could the Devastator's have broken through their line already?

No satisfactory answer would come, so all Rois could do was seek the nearby designated shelter positions or a bunker. She ran through the rest of the labs at hydroponics, making sure all personnel heard the call and left the areas. She couldn't save anyone not already on the Vitae, but she would damn well take care of her own people. With the areas emptied, she'd follow and take her own shelter in place at the designated spot. After securely strapping herself in, she nervously began to whisper out all of the names of every type of fungus known to man in the hopes of keeping her disquieted mind preoccupied while whatever was happening... happened.

The Lorne Farm kept and raised several children in need of homes, and it was here that Rois first found her love of all things growable. It wasn't until ten years later, when the Genesis Protocol was started, that her life was altered in any meaningful way.

Recruiting the best and the brightest, the Nagasaki Conglomerate was not in the least bit picky about whence the future of its STEM programs came, and she along with a few other of her 'siblings' were chosen for the natural aptitude for learning they showed at an early age. Of course, none of them were told why specifically they were being given the opportunity for a top notch higher education, but she wasn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

A decade later, Rois had more than made good use of the extraordinary opportunity offered her. She was a brilliant--if eccentric--botanist in her own right with various specialties including: Plant Biology (Systems Ecology and Physiology); Applied Plant Sciences (Agronomy and Pathology); and Mycology. She absolutely adores fungi of any kind and finds them to be one of the most fascinating forms of plant life. While she technically holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Botany, she absolutely abhors being called 'doctor', preferring her forename to 'Dr. Holt'. Rois--and a few of her colleagues--having proved themselves, were recruited to the Genesis Project as a part of the Hydroponics division. With her passion for her work and impressive field work, she was offered the Head of Hydroponics position on an Ark, which she gladly accepted. She was sure all her siblings were proud of her and she proud of them.

Since her arrival on board the Vitae five years ago, Rois has been quick to set to work. Thankfully, most of the basic structure of the Hydroponics center was completed before her arrival. She simply needed to plot out the best mix of nutrients, crops, and symbiotic organisms to get the plant started. While far less crop rotation is needed aboard the vessel due to the capabilities of the provided technology, she made sure to have the team draw up several contingency plans for various circumstances--such as illness, vitamin/mineral deficiency, et cetera. Coordinating with the processing facilities, robotics, water, and even fabrication centers are key to keeping it all running. She has grown quite used to working with all of these as well as helping to distribute food--when she isn't needed for more important matters.

Naturally, she spends most of her time either in the Hydroponics main plant or research center and in Eden for monitoring and upkeep. When not at work, she is definitely likely to abuse the 'no more than three hours' rule at the garden; it's just her favorite place to be. It reminds her of being back home with her siblings. Unfortunately, of the few who were chosen for STEM along with her, none ended up on Vitae. Nevertheless, she keeps a group photo of everyone in her cabin next to a terrarium filled with various fungi. Her thoughts of home and patchwork family keep her motivated on the Ark and helped her over emotional stumbles. These people are part of her family now, too, and she was going to do her best to take care of them.

Relationships:

• Audrey Knight: They first met back on Earth during their higher education years; Rois very impressed the with younger woman's work seen at more than one science and robotics exhibits. Fast forward years later, Rois was pleasantly surprised to see a familiar face on board the Vitae and even more delighted that the bright mind would be helping with hydroponics' many automated systems. It took some persistence, but soon she thought she could even call Audrey 'friend'. Rois occasional brings Audrey some food, listens to her ramblings, and goes on some tangential blurbs on some new botany project or other. It's a (mostly) symbiotic relationship.
• Michael Smith: A weird boy, Rois has often run into the young man both in and around Eden, whether on her visits or during maintenance. She has frequently been impressed by the cornucopia of knowledge he always has to offer. On more than one occasion, Rois has come to him with a particularly confounding question and Michael is always ready to offer assistance. While he is more than a bit socially awkward, she really isn't one to judge due to her own eccentricities.
• Hal McCormick: Mostly encountered at Eden in the hub, it didn't take long to determine this fellow was rather conservative with his words. Nevertheless, they found some common ground in their shared time spent growing up on farms back on Earth. Considering him at the very least a good acquaintance, Rois is always pleased to take time for reminiscing with the man when their paths cross. Rois appreciates his practicality and ability to get his point across with as few words as possible.
• Dr. Naomi Wolfe: A highly esteemed colleague of Rois' in the Hydroponics Center of the Vitae, she also considers Naomi a good friend. While the woman may be a bit lacking in her ability to self-express, Rois does not mind in the least as Naomi likewise puts up with her own oddities of character. If possible, the woman seems even more literal-minded than herself, finding it hard to understand abstract ideas; on the other hand, Rois values Naomi's ability to straight shoot with her feedback with no need to fluff it up or mince words.

@Cairo If you like, I feel like Audrey and Rois could know each other both from their time in the Conglomerate and on the Arks, as well. More recently, I'm sure Rois would need some assistance with automated equipment used to both monitor and help tend to all of the plants hydroponics houses. Though their fields are quite different and Audrey a recluse, perhaps Rois could be one of her few closer friends/acquaintances? She surely wouldn't mind any rambling about projects. (8
