I'm liking Carver more and more. I was expecting him to be played like the stereotypical paladin who is obsessed with justice/religion/not breaking the law. He's very sweet.

Aww, thanks.

He started as my idea for a paladin of a Neutral Good Deity (Pelor from DnD for the curious). He still has a vague amount of Standard Paladin Analness, but more from the perspective of 'Protect the Innocent' rather than 'Punish the Wicked.' I like playing him, which is probably why I do it so often. :p
Hmmm... would a sophisticated knowledge of the occult be able to translate into any sort of practical talent?

What I'm asking is, would a scholarly character with some sort of ability to perform rituals be an option?
Okay, I had Carver do The Oath that he always does whenever I do anything with him.

Gives him some RP reason to be acting as the tank.
Carver put his hand over his breast. "Your humility does you credit, friend Separ, but you need feel no shame for your actions. You did what you thought was best, and put yourself in harm's way for the sake of another. I think you are very noble - it would be my privilege to journey with one of such spirit."

The paladin smiled fondly down at the gnome as set his energy to the man's injuries. "Aha! Our diminutive friend shows talent. Fear not, I will speak to the girl - see if I'm unable to convince her."

He approached her, still standing where she had been speaking to the half-elf. "I understand that you are afraid. It's a very sudden offer, to go off journeying with strangers. I don't know much about you save that you have some power, and it frightens you." He smiled. "But you don't have to be frightened anymore."

The gnome's childlike curiousity and bizarre manner. The half-elf's bitterness, surliness, and surprising gentleness. Separ's spirit, his temper, his headstrong approach to his problems. The girl's shyness, her fear, the strange power she clearly possessed. These people were innocents, trying to make their way in the world. And innocents needed to be protected. That's what Carver could do, he realized. He could protect them.

In a daze, he drew his sword and planted in the ground at the girl's feet. He dropped to one knee, places his hands upon his hilt, closed his eyes. "In terror of the night, the sun is our greatest deliverance. If we should journey together, my lady, I swear on my honor that no harm will come to you. As long as I draw breath, I will keep you safe. All of you."

He rose, and sheathed his sword.
Alright, I'm off to bed.

Feel free to assume Carver follows the party out when they retreat, which they'll hopefully do.
Seems to me like it's time to split and re-evaluate, boys.
Okay we have some continuity problems, let's get this straightened out.
Ah, poop, someone posted while I was posting. fixing.
Carver saw the sword come out in slow motion, but its arc was complete before he had time to shout a warning. Blood had been spilled - there could be no doubt that the barkeep was deserving of punishment.

But... not today. Not with the gnome, and the girl, and an already injured friend. Certainly not with the rest of the crowd, who seemed like they might choose the side of the local swindler over the foreign knight.

The bearded man grabbed Separ, attempting to pull hims back and call for a retreat. The idea was a sound one.

Carver spoke, not breaking eye contact with the barkeep. "This villain will face a judgement, friends - of his own making. A life lived in adversity to the right can have no other outcome. But perhaps now is not the time." He looked across the room, making eye contact with each of the strangers - the gnome, the scarred half-elf, the girl, the bearded man, the injured adventurer, even the woman with the air of evil about her who had tried to soothe tensions. "Let us leave, for now. The sun is too high for bloodshed."

The words burned Carver's heart as he said them, but they were true. He promised himself that he would see this man punished one day, but for now he hoped the strangers would take his words to heart.
