Rat Race - Accumulation-type Quirk
Jackalope possesses the somewhat stress-inducing ability to increase her speed the more she increases her heart rate, allowing her to achieve truly remarkable velocities and acceleration rivaled only by some of the top pro speedsters (for a short time). This Quirk has the potential to make her a true hypersonic hare but it comes with its fair share of downsides that limit her top speed.
First and most obvious is that it takes time to raise your heartrate from a sitting to sprinting pace, time in which Jackalope is potentially vulnerable. Once she gets going, the effect of strenuous exercise creates a feedback loop that continually elevates her heart rate, but interrupting her before she gets going effectively eliminates her as a threat. By the same token, she needs just as much if not more time to bring her heart rate back down again, which leads into this Quirk’s second and biggest weakness.
The second weakness of Rat Race is tachycardia, or in layman’s terms the effects of spending prolonged periods of time with an elevated heart rate. Should Jackalope push herself too hard for too long, either to maintain her fighting ability or achieve even greater speed, she runs the risk of suffering from tachycardia, meaning she’ll become lightheaded, fatigued, dizzy, short of breath, and possibly even faint. This presents an obvious problem in the heat of battle but an even greater one long-term, as chronic overuse of her Quirk could potentially weaken Jackalope’s heart and lead to cardiac arrest. She takes medicine to help manage this, but it won’t compensate for any truly gross misuse of her Quirk.
In order to help raise and lower her heart rate as quickly and efficiently as possible, Jackalope is always drinking canned coffee and carrying energy drinks (the tiny bottled kind). She’s trained herself in a variety of meditation techniques, and she always wears headphones when using her Quirk so she can listen to music that’ll help “set the tempo of her heart”. In other words, all important skills and tools of the modern office worker!
Because she is still inexperienced and not confident in her hand-to-hand combat skills, Jackalope prefers to fight by throwing darts or rubber balls that pack a greatly enhanced punch when she throws them while running at top speed. One convenient use of her prosthetic arms is as a container to hold such ammunition, and she also had special wire cufflinks designed for tying up villains at super speed built in as well. She activates the wire by holding her wrists together and can use it just as easily to cut through obstacles and debris as she can to subdue.

Jack “Jackie” Sugiura has had a more interesting path towards becoming a hero than most. Age 22, she spent her first few years out of highschool not working in anything hero-related, but as a secretary for the Detnerat corporation’s office in Tokyo. Originally her Quirk only saw use in the office as a way to speed up her workload, but that all changed after an unfortunate workplace incident.
As a result of Detnerat’s reputation and line of work, it is inevitable that they would come under fire from villains from time to time, be they disgruntled ex-employees, thugs looking to steal support items, or proper big-time villains looking to cause trouble for heroes. Jackie was unfortunate enough to get swept up in one of these villain attacks, the aftermath of which left both her arms too mangled to be repaired. Though she took the subsequent amputation and physical rehabilitation better than most people were expecting, what truly surprised them was her admission after the fact that she wanted to become a hero, stating “I know what it’s like to be a bystander, now let’s see what it’s like to be a hero”. With this goal in mind, Jackie worked hard to master her new arms and went down the long, arduous road of going back to school as a 19-year old, eventually graduating from Eiri and turning her second-year internship into a full Sidekick position.
By the way, her name comes from the Jaku General Hospital where she was born!
