I am not being controlled by a mind flayer. I just used my own healthy brain to come to that conclusion. Because I'm saying it, it must be true.

Miles leaned backwards on his chair, holding onto the counter of the bar to stop himself from falling backwards. He looked at the man, the same man who had passed him earlier. hmmm, so he is an adventurer. Miles pulled himself back to a upright position, he then leaned forward and placed his elbows on the table. He'd sipped at the ale he'd been given but it wasn't as good as the drink back home, the ale in Fendrel was mostly imported from Auroris where master brewers were.

Miles slowly stood up from the stool at the counter, using his free hand to wipe foam from his lip, his other hand still holding his drink. He held the mug away from him, towards the space between the burly man and Ana.

"Well there ye have it, three of us should do it. I reckon we all have skills and what not that could...uhh." he held the 'uhh' for a few seconds, his mind scrambling for the word. "Complimnet each other!" He blurted. Miles eyes shifted from Ana to the man, a genuine smile resting on his face.

He brought the mug back to his lips and sipped, than stretching out his arm once more as if expecting something.
Or something bitter if you dont want your cat eating spice

He leaned to the side letting a burly man pass him in the doorway, his eyes kept to the people in the bar. Voices echoed in the room from all the patrons, the low growl of noise made all the voices seem to blend together, making it hard to distinguish any voice. Most of the patrons here looked local with the exception of a few outliers, including the burly man he'd let pass. The man Miles was referring to didnt exactly look like he came from another village, but he didnt quite blend in like the rest of the rabble. Milles started walking slowly through the tavern dodging ale spills and broken glass as he made his was to the bar top. He sat next to a lady with smooth, young looking skin and brown hair that flickered red in the torchlight.

Looking down the bar pass this girl he could see one of the other outliers, he paid them no more attention than that.
"You must be Ana! Correct?" Miles said, his tone low and slightly raspy.

He looked away from this girl and turned back to the barkeep. Miles knocked on the wooden countertop to gain his attention.
"Just an ale please." The beekeep closed his eyes and gave Miles a nod. Miles started to fish for coin in his pocket. Waiting for both Ana and his drink.
"You're the one with the job, no?" Miles asked, his voice a bit louder than before. He didn't look at Ana when asking, he just looked around the bar instead.

"So...this is Stagcross."

Miles said with a raspy voice. He hadn't spoke much since he set out travel from Fendrel and being alone with little water on his journey left his voice hoarse. It wasn't a particularly dangerous journey, from Fendrel to Stagcross, but it felt long. He'd successfully fended off a mocker beast on his first day out. The clever animal had gotten close to miles while wearing the disguise of a merchant, no doubt it had gotten the look from an actual merchant some time in its past. When miles saw through its rouse it quickly changed shapes and attacked. It resembled a short haired wolf with an extra set of limbs in its midsection.

That happened on his first day out, since then things have been uneventful. It didn't matter now anyway, he'd made it to Stagcross. Parched, he set off for the closest tavern. He would surely be able to wet his beak there, it was also likely he would find the person who he came to find. A tavern was always a good place to find rumors and gather information.

After asking around briefly he had managed to locate the tavern. He marched up to the front doors and swung them open, standing in the doorway, acknowledging the room...and the smell.
I've yet to unsub from this, I may have been too hasty. So many GM's get lazy or uninterested after the initial hype and I've been in too many rps like that to count. I guess I thought this was another like that, sorry.
I was really interested in this idea, I still am. But I'm not sure if everyone else lost interest. It's been two days and no activity, it's a bit of a red flag. I'm going to drop out before this begins, assuming it even starts. Sorry GM and everyone else.
'Goodbye. I hope too see you soon. You must understand, I need to help him.'

My thought went out towards the glorious gates that slowly shrink in the distance. The call for my help was fading aswell, but I knew it was still out there. That person sounded so urgent, but now the sound of their cries for help were waning. But I wasn't going to stop. If I had learned anything about myself recently it was that I was very determined; I would no longer break my resolve. My legs moved in the blackness, in my minds eye I could see them moving back and forth. The fellow dweller of darkness was in my sights now. I lept from my position towards the figure, hands outstretched. My hands clasped the pilgrims wrists as I landed on my stomach. I imagined I would have looked like I'd just caught someone falling over an edge, while I myself lay atop it. Horror crept across my face when they were engulfed in the abyss, their form disappearing into obscurity. I could feel my hands slam violently into fists before me, as if the wrists of this person had turned into air.

My soundless screams raged in my mind
'NO NO NO NO! I WAS SO CLOSE!!!!'

My mind grew still for just a moment as a thought scuttled by. I turned my head towards my own gate to salvation, expression blank. It too, was fading. I couldn't make it there in time, even if I used all my energy to sprint to the gates, I know I would still fall short before they disappeared. I was doomed. I laid on my stomach in the darkness, light slowly fading before me, teasing me. I was once again reunited with the Nothing as the only thing providing any light had disappeared. It was gone, but only for a few seconds. Another light had come, not as bright as the last light, but when their was an absence of light even a small flicker would brighten the world. The light grew fast and surrounded me just as fast. Before I knew it, the darkness had all but vanished and I was left standing there in the light.

This isn't my salvation.

Rock formations all around me. A cave. The word came to me quick, I barely had to think about it. I didnt care though, at least i was rid of the darkness. The relief was shortlived when I saw the being in front of me. More darkness, this was different though. It seemed more...tangible, it was a being, like me, but different. Beyond the tangible darkness a figure stood, with the skeletal hand of darkness resting on their shoulders.

My thoughts continued.
'This isn't a trap, this is real, they are both real. They-. Its bringing the person back into the abyss. The tangible darkness is trying to take them, they who I've come to save...not in my watch.'

I raised my arms and I swung my hammer down.
I pushed and pushed and pushed. The Nothing, the abyssal darkness that threatened my existence by swallowing my being, would not let me have my way. Even after I had decided to put my faith into the voice that called me, the darkness still tried to hold me back. Grabbing at my feet while I walked, obscuring my vision so I would loose my way, it tried everything to stop me. It knew. It knew I was trying to escape it. A few times my resolve had wavered while I sat floating in the nothingness, but since I choose to follow the light, my will couldn't be shaken. I was determined. This was my faith.

Had I been religious before the darkness? Was there a 'before the darkness' anyway? Did it matter? I didn't see the light as my god or any diety of the sort, I saw it as my savior, the one who would give me meaning and presence. So I pushed... through the void, through my fear, and I pushed through that little voice at the back of my head that screamed 'STAY'. I pushed and pushed and pushed. Suddenly I had been rewarded for my faith. The gates that would be my sanctuary, my salvation. I knew it in my heart. Even if this light turned out to be ordinary sunlight peering through my eyelids as i wake from a nightmare, I would still be immensely grateful.

I couldn't raise my hand fast enough to open the gate. My hand stopped not 2 inches away from my freedom when I heard it's voice. It wasn't The voice, but a voice like mine, or at least what mine would have felt like. The voice I heard wasn't omniscient nor did it command me, it pleaded to me for help. It was coming from within the darkness, away from the gates...From a person. Thoughts flooded my mind along with their respective emotions following.

'I need to help him!' Worry. 'Who is that asking for help?' Curiosity. 'This is a trap.' Surprise. 'I must help him.' Anxiety. 'Save yourself.' Guilt. 'He didn't help you, why help him?' Anger. 'Hurry up and help him already!!' Courage. I made my choice, I will not condem another to a fate such as this. I clenched my outstretched hand into a fist, I squeezed so tight I could feel my fingernails digging into my palm. The pain was trivial at a time like this. I rested my fist on the door for a brief second, keeping myself stable while I leaned in close.

'I'm sorry. Please, wait for me.'

Before I could convince myself to stay, I pushed off the door and started towards the voice, the person who cried out. I broke my gaze from the gate when I turned my head to the voice. A few tears of sorrow streamed across my cheek as I pulled myself away from my savior.
Oof

Edit: I've made my choice
