“Excellent. I love fighting when I’m sore,” Knight joked, lying on her back like a baby. Then proceeded by jumping back on her feet in a combination of balance and nimbleness. Even in armor she usually found her footing without much effort. Wasting no time, she jumped into the next room, got on the ladder and scaled it as quickly as she could. The air in Midway City felt a little light. A sudden smell of hotdogs came with the taste of fear being carried through the wind. Even with no visible damage or danger both things were still clear as day with all the people fleeing. Knight took a look at her teammates, jumping up from the ladder. In her head she almost weighed and measured them to the treat they were about to face. Yeah, she defiantly felt prepared for this. How is it that so many snakes try to swallow prey, clearly larger than them, she wondered, before taking the first steps towards the center of attention.
A grown man’s hand grabbed Knight by the shoulder and shook it. It took her a moment to escape the dizziness. Had she been dreaming? No. Knocked out maybe? In the blink of an eye every survival instinct in her core went off. Reason and understanding took a backseat to the more pressing concern of staying alive. With limited motor skills Knight defended herself by averting the opponent’s grab and shielding herself, until she could get a grasp of the situation. “Easy – easy!” dr. Willis called out with his soothing, yet firm voice, while his office yet again manifested itself before Knight’s eyes. “Everything is alright.” “What happened?” she asked, bathed in sweat. “You agreed to be hypnotized, remember?” “I…” Still in a state of utter confusion, she rubbed her eyes. “Of course. How, ehm, how’d it go?” “I’ll tell you in a second, but first, could I get my arm back?” Only now did Knight see the awkward angle for which she had twisted it. “Yeah, I suppose you’ve grown attached to it, right?” She joked in the hopes that it would distract him. Then, while suppressing a new sweat-wave, she followed his calm walk back to the desk. Only when her son was present did she feel good wearing a plain shirt, not like now where it mostly felt like a costume for which to fool the world. Knight pretended there was a grain of dust on her leg and sat up in the long chair to brush it off her on-sale-jeans. “Now, in your dosed state, you did mention something about a fiery sky,” dr. Willis finally explained, “however, what really seem to set you off was talk of your father.” Instantly ever muscle in Knight’s body tightened. Her throat became dry, her heart pounded like a mad gorilla. “… My father?” This was a mistake. This was a mistake! something screeched inside her. “Yes. It seemed like a message, a rejection of sorts.” “What did I say?” “You said…” Willis raised his notepad. “Father, don’t … please, don’t. Go back. The World is bare. Unprepared. The world isn’t ready for something like you. Please, don’t…”
Knight’s little incidence at the shrink had been more than enough reason to storm out of there and spend some quality time pondering at Metro Tower. Secretly hoping for something, anything, to distract her from seeing her father’s face when she closed her eyes. She got her wish granted in the form of a code yellow. Already in full armor, and yet she hesitated. For a while actually. Knight sighed, and rid herself of the nightmarish visions she kept from the rest of the League. Cleaned her soul of the evil that had once tainted it. Does anyone know? … No. No, of course not. She then headed straight for the teleporting station. Entered the conversation between Virgil and Robotman with a “Snakes in the garden of Eden, huh?”
<Snipped quote by The Angry Goat> As it stands in the beginning, it does look like the League would be at a severe disadvantage should they come to blows with the Titans.
Hehe, well maybe the League prides itself on making sound, tactical decisions based on experience. And maybe they handle more complicated issues. But ... yeah, I suppose based on raw power, the League is a bit low tier.
Secret Identity: Gabriella Knighthood is the identity, she has acquired in a back alley. However, a thorough look would reveal this person to have lived so much off the grit until age 19, that she might as well be invisible. That fact alone might be highly suspicious. Her real name, and unknown to even the Justice League, is Grail, the Godkiller, destroyer of worlds, and daughter of Darkseid himself.
Status: JLU
Age: 27 years old.
City: Metropolis
Day Job: A consultant over at S.T.A.R. Labs. Very much a freelance job.
Powers: Having fled Apokolips at a young age, Grail had yet to reach her full potential. However, the fact that she would one day match her father in strength became a real possibility, even without the prophecy. Like her father, she draws her divine strength from the eternal flames of Apokolips, and on the day of her escape her Omega Beam finally manifested itself. Her human form might seem immensely more fragile in comparison. Still, Grail (or Knight as she would then call herself) is not to be trifled with.
Enhanced healing: The only slight sign that Knight might not be entirely human. Injuries that would take weeks to heal can take mere days, in some cases hours.
Weaknesses:
Standard human weaknesses. A bullet can kill her.
Her weaknesses, should she ever revert back to her old self, would be the dependence on having to restore her energy from the fires of her homeworld. Should she encounter something that can suck or absorb her energy, she would also be left severely weakened.
Skills: In dept knowledge of extra-dimensional point-to-point Einstein-Rosen bridges. Actually, the whole concept of teleporting matter through time and space is known to her. She can’t exactly build a Mother Box from scratch, but knows enough to guide human scientists in the right direction (though she uses this knowledge to do the complete opposite)
Martial Arts: an expert in tae kwon do, judo, kick-boxing and judgement; a fighting style known only to the citizens of Apokolips.
Advanced utilization of one’s environment: As she fights she can use her environment and surroundings to her advantage. Sometimes she stabs a robber with his own knife, sometimes she drops a chandelier onto a team of criminals. Sometimes all she needs is a pen to do some real damage.
Appearance: When just walking down the street, glasses and a cheap pair of jeans does wonder to hide her identity.
Turning human did nothing to change her height or face, merely her skin and hair color. Standing 175 cm, with long dark brown hair. Taking inspiration from stories like King Arthur, she created the identity of Knight and made a costume to match. An armor made entirely from flexible, lightweight materials. In many ways, the opposite of who she use to be.
BRIEF Bio:
Legend told of the immense destruction the last child of Darkseid would unleash. Annihilation without comparison. As soon as little Grail could stand, she was knocked down. If she wanted to eat, she needed to hunt. She wanted belongings, she had to steal or claim them from her victims. Training for war was her entire life, she knew nothing else. The woman-like creature of Godness’ torment made Grail a living weapon. Someday she would be the edge, Darkseid had needed to conquer New Genesis, or so it was believed. As Grail’s power grew her freedom grew with it. In order to truly prepare for everything, she used Mother Boxes to travel the stars and beyond.
But on a very special planet something happened that Grail had never been prepared for… At age 19, she stayed on the strange planet through months and months for reasons she didn’t quit understand. She liked it there, but when the message of war came, she left without a second’s notice. After leading a highly successful attack on New Genesis, Grail returned to the sound of applause, yet inside she was broken past redemption. The softness of the place she had previously stayed had latched on to her like tar. Refusing to leave her, impossible to shake off. It had made the faces of those she had killed flash before her eyes to no end. It was around that time, her pregnancy started to show. And the big day approached rapidly. Ravaged by guilt, by doubt, by uncertainty she picked a fight with none other than the leader of the Female Furies herself; Big Barda. Somehow between the girl who had traveled and the woman who had returned, Grail had outgrown even Barda. The daughter of Darkseid grabbed the beaten woman by the head, raised her up from the crater and clenched her fist, showing Barda how her life would end in just a second.
Then Grail felt a kick…
Not from Barda. Not from an enemy. But from inside. And in that moment Grail knew she couldn’t kill. She didn’t have it in her anymore. Her child had replaced it. She spared Barda even though mercy was forbidden, and fled Apokolips. A lot happened that day, but to make a long story short: In Grail's mad, feverish escape she hid the one place that had taught her softness, compassion… love. The home of her unborn child's father: Earth.
On planet Earth, Grail made a new life for herself using technology taken from her home. The advancements of Apokolips allowed her to undergo a fairly short, but most exhausting transformation into human form. A disguise that would hopefully protect both herself, her unborn child and Earth from the wrath of Darkseid. Suddenly everything hurt, and fear became so much more tangible when having to be a mere human. Despite having to adapt to this new, brittle reality, she gave birth to a beautiful, human son with nothing of his grandfather in him. She named him Steve, named herself Gabriella Knighthood and made it a duty to repay the universe. Where she had used her skills to kill, she would use them to save. Along side a woman named Martha she deliberately avoided teaching Steve anything about fighting or violence.
Now 8 years later, she’s a member of the Justice League Unlimited as Knight. At least 3 members had noticed her missing past, namely Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman, with only the former being inclined not to ask questions at all. Now he’s gone, and Knight dreads the day someone digs a little deeper. Occasionally, she acts as a kind of freelance consultant of S.T.A.R. Labs. It started out with her simply wanting to pay the expensive medical bills of her son, but evolved into something completely different. Knight is not trying to help humans develop teleportation, she’s actively leading the geniuses working at the lab the wrong way. Making sure they’ll never attract the attention of her father, who’s civilization has already perfected it.
Supporting Characters: Steve: Knight's 5 year old son and only real love. Though being absolutely human, Earth hasn’t been kind to him and more times than not, he’s been sick. For obvious reasons he knows about her membership in the Justice League.
Martha: A common name on Earth. This 40-year-old woman acts as a nanny to Steve and at times a sort of mentor to Knight, having been at war more times than she can count. She has a back-problem that makes her limp and hunch.
(Possibly) Orion: Another child of Darkseid, nevertheless, fighting for the survival of New Genesis as its prominent commander on the battlefield. An expert tracker and piloting the Astro-Harnes; an interstellar vehicle of great power. Should he and Knight ever meet, things would get ugly real fast.
Secondary Character: Darkseid. (name followed by dramatic music)
Additional Notes: My character is more or less completely human, and can’t just revert back to her old self just because the circumstances calls for it. Her old strength came from the fires of Apokolips, at the other side of the universe. Should she ever regain her former strength, her power level can be discussed then, but I was imagining her to be up there with the likes of Superman and Darkseid.
