As an avid reader, I just want to say that the boats are a first year student affair only.
From second year and beyond, they travel by carriage to the castle. It's only brought up in the fifth book because Harry had finally seen someone die in front of him, thus making the threstrals visible to him. Luna Lovegood explains this to him, as she witnessed her mother die when she was young. If you know this already, I'm sorry if I sound presumptuous. >_<
