…Evie...
They walked in silence and arrived back at Evie's house pretty quickly. She still hadn't decided whether this was a good idea, but she didn't have a chance to back out now. She unlocked the door, signalling to Tobias to be quiet, before poking her head inside, listening out for her mother. It was just about 6am, so she knew her mother would be around, probably getting ready to leave. She didn't want her to see Tobias, because she didn't want her mother to get the wrong idea.
"Wait here," she whispered to Tobias, creeping in through the front door and pushing it shut behind her. She walked down the hallway into the kitchen and saw her mother, making herself some breakfast. She had her back to the door, so hadn't seen or even heard Evie come inside. Evie turned and crept back down the hallway, opening the front door again, praying it wasn't going to creak.
"Come on, quickly." Evie whispered to Tobias, who surprisingly was still waiting there.
...Tobias...
"Can't be any quicker with a closed door." Tobias winked at Evie and followed him into the house. The door closed behind him wiht a small thud, but nothing that would alert somebody who wasn't paying attention.
Tobias eyed Evie who sneaked around the corner, and waved to him to follow. Tobias slowly walked behind her, sneakely, but not as suspicious as Evie. At the next corner where Evie, once again, looked around as if she was searching for someone. Before she could signal to him, Tobias touched Evie's shoulders to stop him. He looked her in the eyes. "Why are we sneaking again?" Tobias showed a broad smile, and then stood up, straightening his body, and began to walk around the corner.
...Evie...
"Stop!" Evie hissed at Tobias, putting her hand out to stop Tobias from going around the corner into the kitchen where her mother was. She didn't want her mother to see him. She didn't want to have to answer any of the questions that would inevitably come with her bringing a home a young man, especially at this time of the morning. "My mom is in there, you can't go in there." She whispered to him, before pulling him back behind her.
When she touched his arm and pulled him, she felt her fingers start tingling. "Shit, not now, not now." She said, pulling Tobias down the hallway and pushing him into her bedroom and shutting the door behind them. She could see the lingering effects of her powers, her hands were completely invisible and on the space where her hand had been on Tobias's arm, there was an invisible handprint. She hoped that he hadn't noticed the brief moment that she made a hole in his arm.
"Sorry, I just don't want my mom to ask questions." She said, shaking her hands, feeling the tingling diminishing and her hands coming back into visibility.
...Tobias...
Tobias was grabbed from the back, before he could turn around. Evie stopped him. And after that she started pulling him across the small house. It was understandable why Evie didn't want her mom to see him. But what was not, was the tingling feel on his arm, where Evie touched him. Tobias wasn't into her that much for sure. So as soon as Evie locked the door behind them, Tobias took a quick glance at her hands. Or he would have, if they weren't missing! He looked at his own arm where Evie touched him, and he saw a few disappearing fingerprints that pierced holes in his arms. Tobias was surprised, but he himself was weird because of his powers, so as Evie came back with her hands in place now, he simply looked at her like usual.
"Hey baby. what's the rush with bringing me here? In your bedroom." Tobias let out a small laugh, and scanned Evie's facial impressions. The girl was angry at him for many reasons, unknown to him, but there was also a faint trace of anxiety and conflict. So once again, Tobias spoke up.
"Evie, what was that?" Said Tobias, as he pointed towards the girl's hands. "I hope you are not gonna tell me I was hallucinating that you missed your arms." He looked at his own hands, where the fingerprints used to be. "Or my arms having invisible fingerprints." Tobias looked deep in her eyes, and waited for a response.
...Evie...
Evie took a deep breath and slumped onto her bed. She had hoped he wasn't going to notice what had just happened, but of course he did. He was probably the worst person in the world to find out about this, but she didn't know how he was going to react. How should she play this? Could she pass him off as drunk, pretend he was seeing things. No, Tobias was a lot of things, but he wasn't dumb. The question was, should she trust him? The only other person that knew about her power was her mother, and her mother made it her business to know nothing about it. So could she trust Tobias with the biggest secret of her life? He was a jerk sometimes but she didn't think he would be so untrustworthy that he would spill her secret to the whole of Mars.
Evie looked at Tobias, standing in her doorway and sighed. There was no way she was getting around this. "You might want to sit down," she said, offering him a seat on her bed. She thought he would make some more jokes about this, but it wasn't really the time for joking anymore.
"Tobias, I am deadly serious when I say that you can't tell anyone about this..." Evie started, she couldn't even look at him to gauge his reaction. "And I don't want you to make some kind of joke out of this. But I have a secret power." She turned to him, making eye contact, trying to work out if he was going to burst out laughing or just run out of her room screaming. She decided this was it, all or nothing. She had to trust him.
She let her eyes glaze over a little in concentration and she felt her fingers tingling again. She hadn’t been very good at using her powers on command, but she was getting better everyday, gaining more control. She took a deep breath and held the air in her lungs, hoping this work and she didn’t just look insane. She felt the tingling feeling travel across her whole body and knew then that Tobias would no longer be seeing her standing in front of him.
…Tobias…
Tobias's eyes lost focus as Evie disappeared in front of him. He blinked and looked in front of him again. Still nothing, but the thin air as if Evie never existed. Tobias clapped his hands together in applause, making sure it wasn't loud enough to alert Evie's mother. "Amazing!" He gasped with a slight hint of acting in his voice. He couldn't be a 100% amazed when he himself has powers too. It just didn't have that mind breaking effect. Not anymore that is. If he was to see it like, 3 months ago, he would have surely had a shock. But now he only nodded, and looked at the small reflections in the air. The invisibility wasn't perfect, but Tobias suspected it was because of the clothes, rather than the ability itself. And as much as he wanted to ask Evie to take her clothes off, he resisted the urge. Tobias grabbed Evie's shoulders as best as he could, and in an instant, his body started tingling for a few seconds, and then it stopped. He himself turned invisible too. He looked at his legs, but he couldn't see them. Amazing.
"Can you turn it off as quickly too?" The invisibility slowly faded away from Evie, and Tobias stepped away from her before she turned back completely. As he lifted his hands, he became invisible at an instant, in a blink of an eye he appeared in the mirror. So that's how it worked. Tobias winked at Evie, and raised his hands above his head. With a few cracks and screeches he straightened his arms and rotated his head. "Well, I can't possibly go without returning the favor can I?" He said, and grabbed Evie's hands. "Stay close babe!" Tobias winked at her and eyed a catwalk on a large chimney of some factory.
With a chilly rush, from Evie's bedroom, they appeared on top of the opposite house. A calm wind blew as a large panorama appeared in front of them. It wasn't the prettiest part in town, but from up here, they could see a few blocks, and the bustling of the streets. Even though early in the morning, it was already crowded, and constant honking could be heard. He looked at Evie and smiled broadly. "Whaddaya think?"
…Evie…
Tobias’ reaction was unexpected. She thought he would be more shocked than amazed. But he easily digested the information and became only slightly excited by her performance. And she surprised herself when he took hold of her arm and disappeared as well. Her powers could travel to other people? The possibilities this brought up were just endless.
Evie wasn’t really paying attention when he grabbed hold of her hands, the tingling feeling only just dissipating. There was a great rush of air around her and she found herself standing on a roof, looking back towards her bedroom window. She looked around, feeling slightly dizzy and thoroughly confused.
“What even just happened?” She said, sinking down so she was sitting on the roof. She could hear the sounds of the city below them and she looked to Tobias for an explanation. Before he could even say anything, it clicked for her. “You have powers too?” For a moment, Evie was flooded with a great relief to know she wasn’t the only one. There was finally someone she could talk to, share this with. The only downside was that it was Tobias. If only it was anyone else in this city.
“If you have powers, and I have powers…” Evie mused aloud, “then maybe we aren’t the only ones.” She looked out across the city, her thoughts whizzing a million miles around her head. Should they try to find other people like them? Did the government know? How did this even happen? There were so many questions that remained unanswered. But there was one that she knew Tobias could answer.
“How are we getting off this roof?”
