Devin parked the rental car and got out with the sun beating down on the hot parking lot. Looking around he adjusted his sunglasses back to his eyes and looked at the meyhem in front of him. Tech people were running wires from trucks to the loading bay area and speakers the size of a motorcycle were being wheeled up ramps. A large man with a security windbreaker walked over to him and took down his information followed by letting him know how to get into the concert venue.

Following those instructions he made his way through the winding maze of the backstage location until he found what he was looking for. “DEVIN!” A voice rang out through the whole stage area. Turning and seeing his old friend walking towards him, he smiled and the two gave each other a hug. “Happy you could step in last minute. The original team we had wasn’t able to do the first two locations so you are really helping us out.”

“Yea well you did say it was a candy grab gig so who am I to say no to easy money.” Devin said casually. “You said this was a small show isn’t this like one of the bigger venues in the whole city?” He was concerned because his old friend had a habit of under explaining and this was quickly looking like another situation with that tail.

“Well yea but your escort isn’t the headliner so you don’t have to worry about the same type of issues. For now at least. Like I said she is going to be the next big thing.” Anyway I am meeting her at the hotel later today so come by and we can do a meet and greet.” He then, as quickly as he came left the place and gave Devin the time to do a full walk through.

Three hours later and a quick talk with the regular security team for the stage. He was being frisked by hotel security. When they looked over his ID they waved him through and he made his way to the front desk. “I am here to see Savannah working as her personal security.” Devin was then directed to what floor and room. He made his way up and walked into the room after he knocked.

His old friend brought him in and let Devin walk in to meet his protected. He was wearing dark jeans and a black shirt and a mustard colored motorcycle jacket. What he saw in front of her was an attractive woman who apparently has the voice to match. Smiling he extended a hand for a handshake. “Hello nice to meet you Savanna. My name is Devin Coal. I’ll be shadowing you for the next few shows while we get the companies regular protection team in place.”
Looks great so far!

Stroking his ego with compliments could work on Devin, but he felt he needed to keep a straight face thorough this conversation. Points she was making were fair, and likely missed because of how out of sorts this event put him. Every time he had tried to get through the paperwork he was being reminded of the last two years of doing it with her across from him at her desk. They were good together at work, great together in bed, and not bad on the dance floor.

"Yea well red is really not your color so lets make sure we don't make that mistake in the future." Devin was feeling more comfortable but didn't sit up. Instead leaning back into Harper. After she kissed him on the cheek he leaned in and kissed her back this time on the lips only to have anything further from starting when Sean came running in and started taking some of the spring rolls.

Devin realized his own awkwardness wasn't being hidden at all when his partner started asking about how he wasn't acting normal. Before he could assure her that his awkwardness wasn't surrounding their jungle gym usage of each others bodies, but over the fact that his partner had been shot. He knew if the situation was reversed she would be feeling the same thing. Like he failed her. This went beyond the whole male ego he and all other men were cursed with, but to the heart of being a partner. You have each others backs and would always take the bullet for them if they could.

Lost in thought he was set upon Harper and dragged into a headlock. This was somewhat new. Their bodies intertwined, but the almost childish playfulness of it was a side he hadn't seen in her before. "Are you seriously telling me I had the hard day at work?" He said not fighting the lock. He wasn't about to flail around her hand. "You got SHOT Harper? Don't you want to talk about that? Shot at too this wasn't meant for your hand..." His tone didn't hide his vulnerability. Jesus what are you trying to say he thought to himself before relaxing more so Harper would release him.

Devin had met Sean a few times here and there, but never anything of meaning as far as conversation goes. In most cases his opinions of him was colored by how Harper described him. Still he remembered what he was like when he was his age and figured they were similar enough. At least he had younger sisters and not an older one so that might be incurable.

Casually walking through the doorway and into the house he didn't notice anything really different from the last time he came which was to help Harper move back in. Plenty of awkward silences during that afternoon. The pizza he had been paid in was not worth it, but partners do what partners can as they say.

'Are you sure you should be drinking right after surgery?" Devin asked while thinking he sounded like his mother in his thoughts. He then walked into the kitchen and started to get silverware and cups down. He poured his partner a glass of water and himself a beer from the fridge. Taking the bag of food and putting it on the living room table he sat down on the couch and looked over at his partner.

"I got only one of them as spicy so make sure you now which is which." He said as he grabbed a fork and looked at what was on the TV. Thankfully it was one of the few channels that wasn't running the news of the shooting today on 24/7. While not one to pry Devin came over to check on his partner so that is what he was going to do. "How is the hand? Jordan said you were pretty lucky." He said without being able to look her in the eyes.

Every 30 minutes Devin was getting texts from Dan giving him an update his partners status. He likely could have been at the hospital; however, after the tactical teams were done with their sweep the entire place became a crime scene without a senior detective. He hated the anchor the whole thing was and what it was doing, but he texted Jordan who said she would stop by the hospital and give him a non-Dan review. After all she had a medical degree whereas Dan had a college degree in criminal justice. When he needed help with justice he called Jordan still first so Dan wasn't the top man for the job right now.

A third sweep of the garage came up empty save for some heavy skid tire tracks. They think the shooter was able to exit out of the second garage exit that went through he building next to it. The rest of the day they had been combing security footage and cell phone recordings to find any hint of a clue. Four hours later and with nothing to show for it Devin was exhausted and needed to head back to the precinct to get started on the mountain of paperwork that was ahead of him after the event. Another five hours later and he had barely finished half. Thankfully the captain told him to go home and he considered it an order.

Swinging by Harper's favorite restaurant he ordered dinner for two and drive to her place. He took the bag of food and walked up to the front door. He had read the last text he got from Dan which said that Harper was heading home under protection. Since Devin didn't see them he figured they were parked in plain clothes. Since they didn't approach him he figured they recognized him. He felt it was a little lazy considering he looked like an Uber eats guy than a fellow cop. Devin knocked on the door twice and then opened the door which was unlocked.

It was mayhem in the streets around the scene. News vans were being used as cover and civilians were screaming this way and that. The shots had subsided, but had left fear as the greatest danger. In the distance a car crashing into another that stopped short to avoid hitting a fleeing person could be heard. A few brave reporters seemed to be still trying to broadcast, but when the camera men gave up they quickly followed.

Reaching the tactical truck and unlocking the back. Devin quickly put one on and then grabbed three more. He then hoofed it back to his partner and her ex. Tucked one under Joel’s knees to make the fact that he was on his knees more comfortable. The other two were for Joel and Harper. He didn’t want to leave them, but as Dan arrived shouting about the captain he heard Harper reply. At least I know she is going to be okay. He thought.

Devin unholstered his gun and yelled down at both Joel and Harper. “Not the damn time you two. Get her to the hospital and make sure they know she is a flight risk.” He then looked over at Dan. “VEST!” He said and the young man seemed confused. “PUT IT ON!”” Devin then heard a lieutenant give orders to move on the garage.

Turning up the street and running to the stairs he followed up four cops in uniform. Patting the shoulder to let them know he was there they moved to the second floor and left the first to the other team coming through the car entrance. WHen they reached the third floor Devin went through first and with their weapons drawn they announced themselves. “NYPD everyone stop!”

Moving between the cars they registered anyone in cars first but didn’t see anyone immediately. They made their way to to the far side which was the side that oversaw the crime scene. Near the back was a van with no windows. Moving in on it they called out their identity once more. “NYPD! IF anyone is in the van hands up and get out!’

No one could see any movement so they slowly moved in the car and then popped to its side ready for anything. The van was empty. Devin brought his gun down and continued to scan the area. “Block this area off. If it wasn’t this floor it was the ones above. I am going up. He then joined the other units who were making their way up to the third and fourth floors.
Going to review everything and start character drafting today. Looking forward to tackling this world together with everyone!
That is a great idea. Sadly while I have discord I'm not much of a wizard when it comes to using it. Would you be able to help make a group chat on there?

SHOTS FIRED!!! SHOTS FIRED!!!

Devin moved fast and pushed Harper down to the patch of grass next to the curb. Above them they could hear more shouting and moving. Devin looked down at Harper He saw the blood on her hand and chest from where he tackled her down and started to panic. "Get a doctor!" He shouted as he started to look where the blood was coming from. With the blood on her hand and chest he immediately feared she had been shot in the chest.

With every officer having to go through basic medical training he knew pressure on the wound and something to soak blood instead of just push it was needed. Tearing his jacket off and bunched it up as well he could he pressed it against stomach.

Devin couldn't hear if there were any other shots being fired, but the lack of return fire meant it was unlikely.

"From the parking stricture!" It made the most sense and from where they were facing it was likely the best vantage point for a shooter. "Harper." He said quickly and then again looked around to see if there was anyone coming to help him. "Jesus..." He said when he saw the blood wasn't stopping. He then realized it wasn't her chest but her hand that had been shot. Taking his jacket he wrapped it around and started to tie the arms together.
