Who Art Tho?
The man known as Xan ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Hello there! You can call me Xanadu through originally on Old Guild I was known as Fa11ing Phoenix. I'm a University student that lives on the East Coast of North America studying History and Philosophy with aspirations of either becoming a History Professor or working in the Digital Humanities. I used to be really into forum based roleplaying when I was younger starting out on Neopets before moving to Max-Dan-Wiz and finally ending up on the Old Guild.
As I entered college though, I found it hard to find time to allocate time to writing posts when I have to write essays for grades and the like. Recently though, I've decided that for the sake of my own mental health that I have hobbies beyond work in an attempt to help keep myself sane. And thus I have returned with the expressed intent of continuing to do this weird collaborative writing experience that I love so much!
Y'know my mother always did say that if you spent too much time on the internet, you'd end up in a cult....
Also update time.
Practice reviews are in the works for those I owe them to. They take a little bit of time because I honestly really wanna do the best I can to help you guys. And I can't always be in that super critical, what can we do to make this concept better mindset for too long or else I'll get burned out. So please bare with me with any delays! ^_^
Besides that, I'm going to have another CS up soon as well to give guys another sample of what I'm looking for. You won't meet them for a little bit, till after some intro stuff, but I couldn't help but share them with you guys because like I just love the idea and the character a lot. Like I love what Kolya turned out to be so much that I promoted him from GM-NPC to a #realboi, but this character though is the one I originally had in mind for this. Their story just ends up working better if they are introduced later so in the terminology of Bob Ross it ended up being a happy little accident that worked out with the general story structure.
Also they aren't a human... so like that's cool! ^<^
Fair is fair! I'll take what I can and try to whittle it down :3 I wanna keep to the same standard as everyone else. Good God though what are her 3 defining positive and negative qualities. Hrrmrmmrmrmrmrmrmmmmm
You can also do what @Dervish did and just add both if you want! ^<^ It's honestly whatever you want to do! The history section is where most of my attention is going to be focused anyway.
@Inkarnate Nope! I mean you can, but it is not a requirement. Besides, I already know your writing style through Absolute Comics. Also I think we might have RP'd together before on the Old Guild in like a Yu-Gi-Oh! highschool AU RP? (The Early 2010s were a time). Because some people have been referring to you as Gowi. But that might of been another Gowi, so I don't know? Anyway, nah 12 paragraphs is not needed!
@Mortarion Oh shit you right. That's my bad lmao. I have some some important stuff happening on Friday, that's probably why it is on my brain. In my original deadline post I said Saturday June 1st at 5:00PM EST, which is like how the calendar actually works. So it's then.
@Stormflyx I don't mind. Personally, I just kinda don't like them but that's just because of how I work. Because I tend to write these whole big personality section, and then when I'm actually like writing the character I'm like... wait... they are actually kind of like this and not like how I described them in the CS. So I like traits because they are less restrictives in that sense. But, if you wanna do it in more of a traditional manner that is fine as well!
Because of her tendency to slouch her shoulders and an unshakable habit of avoiding eye-contact like one would a hung-over Krogan, Faena often appears smaller then her actual 172 centimeters. In practice, she appear to double-down on her ability to be swallowed by the background through a wardrobe of monochromatic muted tones that cover up as much of her body as possible, in particular being a large fan of turtle necks.
Yet despite her waifish first impression underneath the black and grays Faena has the body of a trained hunter. It's a combination of tightened muscle interlaced with an immeasurable number of scars and burn marks. The scars themselves are in a patchwork state of healing, some old and faded and others fresh and the skin around them still raw. Amongst the bullet and stab wounds that dotted her frame their are also the occasional careful and clean lines made by professional patching up jobs. At this point Faena isn't even sure that they can pass through a metal detector being a hobbled-together simulacrum of bolts, screws, plates, and medical gel.
Faena's eyes serve as the tipping point between reserved exterior and hardened interior. Her pale gray gaze caught in constant flux between fierce determination and doubt.
B A C K G R O U N D
Faena grew up in the equivalent of mercenary royalty. Her mother was Salisa Sarsi, a decorated asari commando turned long-time member of the Eclipse recruited by long time colleague Jona Sederis. Her was Korten Brashk, a Krogan Battlemaster that would make a name for himself working with the Blood Pack. In what can only be described as the epitome of a "Slap-slap-kiss-kiss" the pair started off on other sides of the battlefield nearly killing each other before they eventually fell for one another. The two at least for a time managed to keep their work separated from their personal life and three children would eventually be born from their union, the youngest being Faena.
Soon after Faena was born in 2054, Salisa and Brashk separated as they both found themselves investing more time in their work then one another. The amicable nature of the parting lead to Faena spending her childhood split between Illium with her mother and Omega with her father. Growing up, Faena appreciated the time that she spent on Omega deppite its rather harsh presentation compared to the excess and luxury of Illium. To his credit despite Branshk's blunt and crude exterior he was an excellent father. The older krogan always had dreams of having children of his own, but with the harsh reality of the genophage, it seemed that dream would never become a reality. Branshk did his past to impart his children with his wise kernels of wisdom such as "Never surprise a Vorcha on the shitter" or "Make sure to have a backup gun to your backup gun."
Life on Illium with Salisa was a different story. Faena was always the disappointment child out of Salisa's children. Faena's two older siblings Unara and Ishiyna both took after Salisa intensely both exceptional biotics that would also have successful careers in the mercenary business. In contrast, Faena had always had trouble mastering her own biotic potential. Doctors didn't know if it was because of some neurological defect or just simple performance anxiety, but despite in moments of sever emotional stress Faena was never able to harness biotic power greater than the equivalent of an L-1 human. Knowing this Salisa made it her mission to put Faena in as much emotional stress as they could handle every single day, training them and pushing them to the limit. In this way trying to force her daughter into a state where she could always pull on her biotic potential
Predictably, this intensive training only drove Faena further and further away from Salisa. This rift eventually reach its breaking point after a particularly bad argument between the two that ended with Salisa biotically pushing Faena sending her young daughter headfirst into a glass table, the genesis of the scar that still hangs above her right eye to this day. The scar did not heal properly because rather then going to a hospital, Fena still bleeding from the head packed up her bags and left their mother heading to Omega where they would spend the rest of their adolescence with Brashk.
From that point on Faena had a goal in mind. They would train and become a good enough mercenary to join the Eclipse finally proving to Salisa that she was wrong, that they could amount to something. Brashk in his constant pursuit of the "Father of the Year" award took to Faena's new dream with gusto. Yet he took a different approach then Salisa rather then focusing on Faena's weaknesses, he honed in on her strengths.
It was this approach that would lead Faena towards marksmanship. It became apparent rather quickly that she did not thrive in close quarters combat environment. It seemed when thrust into such scenarios Faena's flight or fight response was hard-wired to flight, that or she just had a panic attack out right. To counteract this, Brashk began to train Faena with sniper rifles, so that she could be as far removed from combat as she desired. This also had the unintentional befit of harnessing that fear into a productive and beneficial force, fear driving her hands to be steady and her aim dead on, as to assuredly take down the targets before they got close enough to her. Though such combat scenarios would not occur until much later, the elder Krogan starting her out with simple stationary bottles to begin their training.
At the same time, Faena began to develop her technological skills. Faena's father was like a magnet for causing problems with electronics; terminals and omni-tools having the strange habit of just short-circuiting in the mere presence of him. To counteract this technological curse Faena had to pick up the slack for the both of them. In this department, she is more or less self-trained. Her skills developed through the Extranet, looking online for videos of how to repair, rewire, and generally deal with most technological problems. When Faena couldn't find a video, she would find other ways to solve the problem, slowly over time accruing a large sum of pirated files that stretched from instruction manuals to entire textbooks on electrical and computer engineering. And with all things with her extended practice she slowly began to have to use the Extranet less and less while depending more and more on previously established skills.
Faena's move from stationary bottles to living beings came unexpectedly. Her father as usual took Faena to an abandoned part of their neighborhood in Omega, that over the years he had slowly converted to a practice range. That day though an angry Turian by the name of Litorius was searching for Brashk and he was looking for blood. Litorius was part of a mercernary group that made the grave error of starting to encroach on Blood Pack territory and it was Brashk had lead the team that was sent to discipline them. Brashk had ripped off one of Litorius' mandibles with his bare hands, and so Litroius wasn't leaving until he put a bullet through the Krogan's brain. Unfortunately for Litroius, Brashk's child was quicker on that day and a sniper round took off his other mandible and most of his head.
Faena didn't sleep for days after the Litroius incident. She didn't pick up a gun again for a solid six months. During that time, they turned she threw herself deeper into her study of electronics. Faena weighed her options and wondered if it wasn't too late to go to university, become an engineer, work for some corporation on Illium or maybe even on the Citadel. Yet she couldn't do it, the little spite engine that sat the center of their chest refused to let her mother be right. At the crossroads of salvation and damnation Faena choose the latter path. And after that Faena began to find it a lot easier to kill people.
Soon after, Faena's skills had grown to the point where Brashk felt comfortable enough to allow her to start taking on missions for the Blood Pack. Faena felt very out of place amongst the krogans and vorcha that made up the ranks of the Blood Pack, but she was treated kindly enough, Brashk making it plainly clear that if anyone as much as laid a finger on Faena that they would soon have to start calling them "triples" not "quads". Thankfully, Faena didn't spend too much time amongst the rough and tumble crowd, most of her missions were solo-operations, assassination against Pack targets: drug pushers that didn't pay their bribes, rival mercs, vigilantes that were getting too full of themselves. Whoever they were, soon they found themselves in Faena's sights.
Faena would spend five years causing death and terror from Omega's shadows.
Near the end of their fifth year was when the wanderlust began. Faena knew that they needed to grow if they were even going to achieve their goal. Omega wasn't going to do that for them, Omega was the place that folks went to rot away. And so with tears in her eyes they said goodbye to their father and got on the next shuttle leaving Omega. From there Faena would began a long and successful career as what she would call a "problem solver" and what everyone else would call an "assassin". Over time she gained a reputation as a quiet and efficient professional. In her time browsing the professional market she took on contracts of all shapes and colors from pirate lords to CEOs.
For a long time the credits were good and the jobs kept on coming in and during this stretch of time, Faena almost forget her goal as for the first time in many years Salisa's torment felt very far away. But fate had other plans and in 2176 CE, Faena was hired by the Batarian Na'hesit during the Anhur rebellion. As luck would have it, much of Salisa's work during that time would be killing Eclipse commanders, the mercenary group hired by the Abolitionist faction to win their war for them. The Eclipse would eventually turn the tide on Anhur, but while the fighting still raged Faena made life for them a living hell. She took out entire squads on her own before the mercenariness had any idea what was happening as shoots rang out from the shadows. For a time, the Eclipse even thought that the Na'hesit had hired an entire team of turian snipers. The Eclipse probably would of been better off if the Na'hesit had.
A year after the war had ended in 2177 CE, the Eclipse were finally able to track Faena down. Following the age old adage of "you can't beat em', join em'", Faena was offered a contract with the mercenary group, now at the height of their renown after the group's swift work on Anhur. Ironically enough at the same time Faena was joining up, Salisa was leaving after irreconcilable differences arose between her and Jona Sederis. At that point Faena had "won", they had more then enough proved their worth and had proven their mother wrong. But Faena soon found out that life continued after you "won".
Faena needed something to fill the void, and she found that something in their new job. Faena had spent most her freelance career working alone. Working with the Eclipse, Faena began to miss the long hours spent alone staking out a target waiting for that perfect moment to take the shot. At the same time Faena did come to appreciate the support structure that existed within the Eclipse. The fact that jobs were delivered instead of them having to go talk to clients was nice. The fact that a professional cadre of quartermasters were on staff to keep their gear in top shape and provide them with supplies was also nice. And in time while Faena did miss the isolation, they began to understood way so many choose to work in groups and large organizations.
The time came for Faena to prove herself, a year into her new career. The Eclipse was hired to deal with some pirates that were harassing Volus' trade ships and Faena was part of the team tasked with resolving the issue. To their great surprise though when storming the beach that lead up to Pirate's fortress, the squad was suddenly attacked by a gunship that the pirates had acquired after their most recent raid. The ship's heavy guns ended up putting intense pressure of the squad and left them pinned on the the beach hunkered down behind what little cover they had. With no other options Faena popped out of cover and lined up a shot on the gunship. The bullet found its way home striking through the reinforced glass of the gunship's cockpit already damaged in the firefight and embedding itself into its pilot. As the gunship spun out of control Faena's team was able to turn the tide of the battle, pushing the pirates back and eventually taking the fortress.
After that Faena was soon promoted up the Eclipse food chain gaining the rank of commando. After having served in that capacity for a year, Faena received a notification about her mother. Salisa who had been on the run since parting ways with Eclipse having stolen a significant amount of credits from the organization during her departure had finally been found. The Alliance raids on Torfan and Theshaca had finally flushed her out and the Eclipse had picked up the scent. Faena was being placed on the team that was responsible for her retrieval. Maybe because she was good at what she did. Maybe it was a test by the higher ups to see where her loyalty was. Whatever the reason, the results were the same. Faena never imagined this kind of ending, on the team that would bring her mother in for her own execution. But... a job was a job. Right?
S K I L L S
Faena is far removed from that young girl shooting bottles as decades of practice have sharpened her skills. These days Faena is a highly effective marksmen able to land shots thousands of meters away in the right conditions. The calculations and considerations needed to perform such feats as factors like bullet drop, wind speed need to be carefuly considered are performed in her head with relative ease. Despite this marksmanship has never become an automated aciton for her and for good reason as Brashk always had the habit of reminding her "the moment you stopped thinking is the moment you end up dead". Each shoot is its own process carefully considered, mapped, and planned out before its execution. In this Faena likens herself more to an artist then some random nutjob that picked up a gun.
Beyond her skills with a rifle Faena also knows her way around electronics. Taking her initial interest developed in her years with Brashk, Faena was able to expand those skills into something with application on the job. Her understanding isn't as good as somebody who had some kind of formal education and she can't particularly give you the theory beyond why what she does works. What she can tell you is that if you cut this wire this door will open or if she overloads this circuit then this robot will explode. And when push comes to shove at the end of the day the execution matters more then the theory in most cases.
Spending long stretches of time sometimes years at a time without non-professional contact to another living being beyond the Extranet, Faena learned rather quickly to take care of herself. She is a remarkably self-efficient individual having had to depend solely on her own ability for such long periods of time. She knows her ways around basic back-alley medical treatments knowing how to make one roll of gauze do miracle work. And her navigation skills especially in urban environments are particularly strong. This is paired together with a rather strong "danger sense", in that her gut is usually pretty okay when it comes to wanting to nope out of an area.
And while she is incredibly competent at what she does in a way this is Faena's greatest weakness. She is in some ways overspecialized at what she does. Having spent so much of her life focusing in on her skills as a infiltrator, Faena is barely able to float by in situations that don't depend on those skills. She barely knows how to cook relying heavily on what basically amounts to dehydrated ration kits, that she can basically just add water to, to get her daily required calorie allotment. Beyond that her social skills are... basically non-existent, the traditional grace and social ease that the asari are known for nowhere to be found.
The armor is presented as a kind of "signing" bonus even though the Eclipse like any professional organization won't let you run jobs without it. The armor itself is based on a Jormangund Technology framework with some after-market additions to round out the package. Mercs working with the Eclipse, especially commandos end up doing small modifications to their armor to better suit them as individuals. For Faena most of those work was placed into her helmet Faena upgrading the hud and targeting suite software to homebrew system that she designed herself and had been using for years.
Devlon Industries M-92 Mantis
The Mantis has been Faena's weapon of choice for some number of years now. Among marksmen the Mantis has a mixed reputation. Some considered it nothing more then an antique, a lumbering beast with an ineffective heatsink whose high impact, single shot capacity is more of a liability then a benefit in the days of kinetic barriers. Defenders of the Mantis such as Faena argue that the Mantis is a reliable piece of equipment. That the concerns about it's single shot capacity are offset by its sheer stopping power, and the single shot capacity isn't a problem if you slow down and make each of those shots count. Faena's looks pretty much like the stock model save for a drawing of a cartoon varren that she drew on the stock.
Graal Spike Thrower
Faena has only had to use the spike thrower on very rare occasions. It was the only memento that Brashk had of his father who was a famed big game hunter back on Tuchanka. The spike thrower was the only thing his fellow hunters were able to recover after he tried to cement his name in legend and take down a Thresher Maw. Brashk felt that it was only right that he give the spike thrower to his child, so that it could serve her as it once served him. Unfortunately Brashk didn't really take into account that the weapon really wasn't Faena's style, the device built for a krogan so Faena had to anchor herself before firing least the kickback knock her flat on her ass. She still keeps the gun on her though as a sort of good luck charms and those rare times she is forced to use it... it gets the job done.
Kassa Fabrication M-12 Locust
When enemies start getting in too close for comfort or Faena just needs something a little bit quicker then the Mantis, she turns to the M-12. The M-12 high rate of fire and relatively strong accuracy when compared to most SMGs makes it the perfect fall back weapon for Faena. And its compact shape makes for easy concealment and even easier to pack which is always an added bonus.
Kassa Fabrication Polaris Omni-Tool
The Polaris was Faena's gift to herself after her first successful solo mission after leaving Omega. These days she could most certainty afford a better model but she keeps to her tried and true variant still to this day. The reason is simple enough with her current model basically running only a Polaris shell with a bunch of custom made applications and other changes run in the background. And lacking the forsight to making these mods universal, if she purchased even a new model of the Polaris, she would have to rewrite all the programs again from scratch a task that she would rather not have to perform.

PSYCH PROFILE
Psychological Evaluation of Potential Commando Candidate Faena Sarsi Talking to her squadmates its hard to get a clear picture of the young Sarsi. They all can vouch for her skills on the battlefield, something that her service record shows clearly but beyond that? Nothing. She seems very withdrawn from others preferring to spend her time alone between missions either spending most of the day at the practice range or hold up in her quarters browsing the Extranet. Her squad leaders don't necessarily mind because she doesn't cause any real personal problems (kind of hard to start grudges or any other problems if you don't talk to people) but they do complain that sometimes it feels like Faena isn't doing her all to fully inter grate herself into the team.
A few squadmates that have run on more then one mission in the past reveled that once Faena began to warm up to them that she did manage to speak up a bit more. During those rare times she even managed to express a remarkable level of understanding towards their current problems, even being able to help some of them sort of troubles they had around the time. Though at the same time they noted that Faena was very reluctant to share much about her own past or what she was thinking, despite her willingness to listen to others problems. Noting that she became particularly distressed if the conversation drifted towards the subject of their mother.
In many ways Faena seems like the polar opposite of Salisa which given recent events is probably a good thing. Yet by all accounts there does seem to be one similarity linking them and that is their rage. While Salisa's anger management issues were as you are well aware, a major problem in her time serving with the organization. Her young daughter in contrast seems much more mellow at first glance. Yet that same fire seems to be easily triggered, usually occurring when others offer her help in some way. This suggest some sort of inadequacy issues, a fear that they aren't good enough, that they are constantly being judged. While such outburts have not lead to violence as they often did with Salisa, they still present a hurdle that the girl must learn to overcome.
In my own personal meetings for the girl conducted for this report, I tend to agree with the ideas already established in the present. From our brief time together, Faena presents to me as a curious case of duality. At once there is the sniper efficient, professional, polite, and withdrawn. Yet at the same time there are hints of another there. The figure that comes out in these occasional private moments with her squadmates. Insecure, anxious, and full of doubt. And yet Faena chooses to march on despite it all.
That I believe in a way marks a courage that is rarely spoken of....

V I C E S
Scratching More of a nervous tick then a vice, but ever since Faena was a child she had the habit of scratching at her skin. Typically it occurs only in times of great stress and anxiety. In times of great stress this scratching would eventually lead to bleeding, leaving numerous scabs across her body typically along her arms. Her skin-covering attire is mostly worn to dissuade her from this activity or at least put a barrier between herself and her skin. Another side effect of this habit is she tends to keep her nails filed down to be almost painfully small size to prevent her nails from damaging her skin. The nail filing in a way slowly coming to replace the scratching as a new tick.
Extranet Faena spends an ungodly amount of time on the Extranet. Whenever she isn't on a mission it is safe to say that you will find her hold up somewhere with her computer. What she is doing can vary from watching funny animal videos, to reading the laster chapter in the Blasto Fanfic that she's been following. She also has a substantial presence on some obscure forums particularly ones associated with that deal in the buying and selling of antique sniper rifles, a side hobby that has recently gotten into. Yet really the Extranet provides her with a lifeline in a way. Faena really doesn't get out much nor does she talk to people that much and so the only real communication she has is on the Extranet. Mostly this means her family, her father and sisters, which given how they are all scattered across the galaxy its sometimes hard to keep in contact, but with the power of the extranet Brashk and Faena try to have at least one vid-call a week if they are able.
Plushies Before Faena moved to Omega full time, whenever she would came to spend time with Brashk he would of somehow acquired her a new plushie. This small, squishable, and soft friends provided the young asari with a measure of comfort. Even though it is somewhat "childish" Faena continues this tradition to this day and over the years has slowly amassed a large collection of the creatures. Each of them have names and are tended to with an almost immaculate level of care. You know how John Wick gets with his dogs? Yeah if you messed up Faena's plushies you would get the end result... only like much worse.
Hallex Faena started taking Hallex during her time on Anhur. Spending days at a time without sleep holding down positions against abolitionist forces, she resorted to the stimulate to keep herself up through the long hours. This extended use and abuse eventually lead Faena to becoming addicted to the stuff. These days she needs to take at last one pill a day to avoid the jitters and shakes from kicking in. Typically she'll take it before a mission so that she can stay on focus for its duration. It hasn't killed her yet and the Eclipse hands the stuff out like candy, so for now it seems to be working out okay for herself.

D R I V E
If I'm being honest Faena is the product of two albums: Painting of A Panic Attack by Frightened Rabbit and The Sunset Tree by the Mountain Goats. Faena at her heart is a very messy and flawed character which I tend to find to be the best kinds of character. Much of this stems from the abuse that she experienced under her mother, abuse which drove her to become the person that she is today... incredibly good at the one thing that her mother said she would never be able to do and incredibly shitty at everything else.
But also I find that its an interesting dichotomy and a very "human" one between the exterior and interior self. Outwardly she is probably one of the better snipers currently operating in the Terminus system, and is damn good at her job. By all marks and standards, she should feel like she is at the top of the world. She completed her goal, she proved her mother wrong in more than one way. But of course life is never easy and the problem with trauma like that is that it doesn't just go away. You can't just prove it wrong. It kinda sticks to you. And so despite being as skilled and successful as she is, she is a wreck emotionally and mentally. All the good in her life she doesn't attribute to herself but only as a product of her past, and the bad shit in her life she attributes to not being able to overcome that past.
Stuck in this eternal catch-22, she never has had a purpose that was truly her own. She is always doing things to prove others wrong, to avert that judgmental gaze upon somebody else. She's never even asked herself what she wants from her life. But that spite engine, that little voice in the back of her head is constantly yelling, pushing her to get back up, pushing her to keep on moving. Because everyone believes that she can't do it. And all that little voice whispers in return is simply two words.
>so many human characters >where are the Turians? >on a ship ran by a human >less than a generation after the First Contact war
Yeah that's why I was like.... yeah this adds up.
Also @Jarl Coolgruuf Let me know if you want me to give you a practice review!
@Mortarion@Lauder Applications are open until Friday June 1st at 5PM EST. So as long as you folks get a sheet in before then, you will be added to the applicant pool from which the final cast decision will be made!
Also, can I ask questions about the feedback in private? Just to be sure that we are on the same page? @Xanadu
Yeah if that would help!
@Xanadu also is there, a uh bar on the ship? Like the Normandy had.
I mean like... the haunts section of the CS is for you guys to tell me what is on the ship. Sooooo if you want there to be a bar. There is a possibility.
