Targa Household
Yuuma nodded in affirmation. "Perhaps one person was enough to satisfy the ghoul's hunger. The other two kills were just to eliminate witnesses. But..."
The boy lowered the camera and bit at the tip of his thumb, deep in thought. "Why go through the trouble of breaking into a home? Why leave potential food around, instead of cleaning up and taking it with you? The ghoul could have just picked off a random drunk on the streets or something instead. Like this, we've got tons of evidence. Either our culprit is an idiot, or there was more purpose to this than just feeding."
As Luca went off to explore more of the house, the young bureau investigator came stumbling back into the house, holding a tablet out. Yuuma took it and handed him back his camera.
"Um, those are the two people who lived here officially, sir," he said, pointing to the screen.
"A married couple..." he muttered, quickly confirming that the two identifiable bodies were them. Two people living in the house, and three bodies. Possibly a friend staying over or--
"But I asked the neighbor that first called the police here," the investigator spoke up, breaking Yuuma's train of thought. "And he said there was also a teen-aged boy, named Targa Akurai, who lived here. We have no information on him registered, sir."
Yuuma looked up, a bit of surprise on his face. "What was his relation to the couple?"
"Um, apparently, he lost his parents years ago, and the two decided to take him in. No blood relation, it looks like."
"That's... off," Yuuma said, thinking out loud. He then looked to the puddle of bones. "The kid...?"
"Th-the parents were human," the bureau investigator offered, earning him an annoyed look from Yuuma.
"Yes, I can see that. Check their blood anyways." His mind went back to the mystery-kid. "And make sure the neighbor gives a solid description of the boy. Ask around the block some more about him, when you have the time."
Yuuma handed the tablet back, and moved to the living room, eyes on the lookout for something in specific -- which he found quickly enough. Briskly walking across the room, he reached for a framed photo, and brought it into the light. It depicted a happy-looking family; A mother, a father, and a son.
His eyes narrowed as he looked back towards the bones, bloody hand prints on the floor leading to it. "Do everything you can to identify our mess over there, as soon as possible," he said to the other investigators. "Check the wounds on the couple for any traces of ghoul, see if you can match it with anything on record."
Yuuma then heard Luca call him, so he quickly made his way to his partner. He entered the washroom, and frowned a moment later, when everything had registered. Things were beginning to click together.
"This might be too easy," he said, handing the picture to Luca. "A young-adult male apparently lived here, but he's completely unregistered. Sounds like this kid is possibly a ghoul. I'm thinking that he lost it, maybe from hunger. Doesn't explain the fact that there are three bodies though. Once we get all the results back, we'll be able to tell exactly what happened here, and have plenty of leads to help us decide where we want to go from there."
He nodded towards the bloody pile of clothes. "Must belong to him. I'll ask to have it fully analyzed -- most of the blood probably isn't his, so we might not get much, but we can't pass up the chance to get him on record."
He stepped back out into the hallway, ordering the bureau investigators to thoroughly sweep the washroom.
Addressing his partner again, he took another quick look around. "I believe we're done here, Luca. Just need to wait it out 'til tomorrow, when the results come in."
On his way out of the home, he passed by the young bureau investigator, and realized he had been fairly rude to him. He wasn't feeling very apologetic about that -- he had simply been doing his job. But... he could give the guy a break.
Yuuma sighed, before speaking up. "What's your name?" he asked the boy.
The kid looked like a deer caught in headlights. After making a sound that was not unlike a croak, he found his voice. "R-rank 3 Investigator Yamamoto Ryo, sir!"
"Good work today, Yamamoto-kun," Yuuma said, giving him a tap on the shoulder.
With that, he stepped back outside, and turned to wait for Luca.
CCG Cafeteria
Yuuma gave another smirk, knowing exactly what Luca was talking about. Fresh was right -- the Bureau Investigators who had undoubtedly been dispatched to gather data likely hadn't even reached the scene yet. "I'm glad we both want to get into it immediately. I'll make the call."
A moment later, he had his cell to his ear, put on hold after making his request. It didn't take long for him to hear the secretary's voice again.
"You've been given jurisdiction over the crime scene, and are to head there immediately," she said simply, to the point. "At the moment, there are too many questions surrounding the event, but once we have more information, you two will be among the first considered to be assigned to any ghouls involved."
Yuuma gave a quick thumbs up to Luca as he responded to her. "Excellent, thank you."
Hanging up, the older boy motioned to Luca to follow him. "We gotta go, before bodies start rotting." As the two quickly made their way out of CCG Headquarters, Yuuma explained he had been told -- that they hadn't actually been assigned anything, but that what they had was a start.

Targa Household
Police surrounded the home, not many of them actually doing anything other than standing around. One of them, an older man, noticed the duo approaching, and stepped towards them. Not interested in wasting time, Yuuma simply showed his badge and the papers that proved him and Luca to now be in charge, and the two were quickly granted access.
As they stepped into the house, Yuuma's serious expression remained unchanged from the sight and smell. He simply looked around, studying, mentally picking up anything he could. He did offer a comment, though. "Looks like some fun was had." Despite the positive-sounding comment, his brow furrowed.
There were four Bureau Investigators present. Two held cameras, snapping pictures non-stop, gingerly stepping around the gore that surrounded them. The two others gathered samples from every pool of blood, every limb, and every unidentifiable piece of flesh. They paid little mind to the two young Ghoul Investigators. That was fine; they knew what they had to do, and they were doing it.
"So there's three dead," Yuuma said, partially to Luca. "One woman, one man, and... that." He pointed to the largest pool of blood, bones with little flesh hanging onto them bathing in it.
Mind working, he called one of the cameramen over. "You. How many people lived in this house?"
The boy, who barely seemed to be 18, acted all flustered. "Uh, I-I have no idea, s-sir!"
"Go find out," Yuuma ordered, taking the camera and motioning the boy out of the house. He continued taking pictures in his place.
"Obviously a ghoul involved here," he said, glancing at Luca. "Just need to figure out what happened, why, and who."
CCG Cafeteria
Yuuma looked up, the little concentration he had had broken, and gave an easy smile when he saw the speaker's face.
"That's right," he replied. "Rank 2 Investigator Saito Yuuma." He closed the folder in front of him, and stood up, reaching across the table with his right hand outstretched. "Are you doing well, Langley-kun?"
Sitting back in his seat, he took a moment to gather his thoughts, deciding what he wanted to cover and in what order.
"Before anything else, I have a request," he said, his easy smile still there. "I'd prefer if we keep formalities between the two of us to an absolute minimum. Not only are we essentially married now, but we're both the same rank, and similar in age. So just call me Yuuma."
Yuuma gave a small, content huff, glad to have that out of the way. It would even help with efficiency. No matter how little, that fact pleased the boy.
"I was going through these," he continued after a moment, pushing the folder towards Luca. "Have a look. They're files on some ghouls I find at least mildly interesting. I figure we can request to be assigned to one, instead of waiting around and twiddling our thumbs."
Yuuma scratched his nose and leaned back into his seat, before deciding to share more of his thoughts with his new partner. "Considering we only have three years of field experience between the two of us, I can't help but feel like we'll be seen as weak and unreliable. And as much as I'd like to prove that notion wrong as soon as possible, I think it'd be good for our first few assignments to be C and B-ranked ghouls who have a penchant for violence. I'm sure you know, but I haven't done anything in a year, and I need to get back into the swing of things." His eyes darted towards his briefcase. "And my new quinque is a koukaku-type. The last one I had was an ukaku, and to say they handle differently is an understatement."
Yuuma got out of his seat and stretched lazily. "Point is, while I'm plenty confident in my abilities, I wouldn't mind a little warm-up. We can familiarize ourselves with each other in a low-pressure environment. Then, we'll really start to work on making a name for ourselves, yeah?" he finished with a friendly smirk.
The boy paused yet again, realizing he had been talking a lot, and hadn't given Luca much opportunity to speak up. "Is there anything you'd like to ask, or want me to know?" he invited, a curious look on his face.
CCG Headquarters
Rank 2 Ghoul Investigator Saito Yuuma was officially cleared for duty once again. His body had healed itself as best it could, and he had worked hard to get back into shape. All the paperwork was done, and he had been assigned a new partner. He had even received his new Quinque, which he held onto at this very moment, in its briefcase form.
He quickly looked over the papers on his new partner for the dozenth time as he walked. 19-year-old Luca Langley, also a Rank 2 Investigator. When Yuuma had first received the news, he had thought a mistake had been made. Two young, low-ranked, inexperienced investigators being thrown together? It didn't seem to make much sense. Yuuma had been assured, however, that there was no mistake, so he figured the higher-ups had their reasons.
If the boy was competent, Yuuma wouldn't have anything to complain about. In fact, he thought, having a partner so close to his age could be fun. Perhaps they could become good friends, something that had never been possible with Yuuma's last partner.
No use thinking about it now. He had called Luca a few days ago, scheduling a meeting in CCG's cafeteria today after-hours. Yuuma would soon be able to decide if he liked him or not, and then go from there.
As the young man entered the cafeteria, he checked his phone for the time, noting he was a little early. As he dropped his Quinque on a nearby table and folded his paper away neatly, he saw that the large room was fairly empty -- normal, considering the hour. One person in particular did catch his eye, however: Cannibal Corpse, Matsuoka Yuuka. He had seen her around enough that her appearance was no longer shocking, but it was certainly still a little unsettling. She sat with a dark-skinned boy, the pair poring over what Yuuma assumed to be an assignment. After eyeing them for a few moments, he returned to his own business.
While waiting for Luca, he looked over multiple ghoul files, trying to find an assignment the two could ask for, instead of waiting around to be given one.
Name: Saito Yuuma
Nicknames: None at the moment, as he's been off-duty for a year.
Appearance Description:
Yuuma stands fairly tall at 182cm, and is lean, weighing just over 70kg. By Ghoul Investigator standards, however, he's not the most intimidating. He has black hair and light-brown, almost reddish eyes. He usually dresses as pictured, forgoing any sort of overcoat unless the weather really calls for it. Light-pink burn scars cover his right arm and shoulder, ending on the lower-right portion of his jaw. He isn't very conscious of them and makes no attempt to cover up; in fact, he could even be considered prideful of them, as they are proof of his greatest achievement.
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Rank: Rank 2 Ghoul Investigator
The Koukaku-type Homewrecker takes the shape of a giant axe. One side of the head is blunt, and the other is sharp, allowing for either smashing or slicing, as Yuuma sees fit. Both the handle and head can grow and shrink, giving it versatility, and it can block attacks effectively. It feels light to the user, making it possible to wield, while still being capable of doing plenty of damage.
Looks something like this, without the chains and spiked blade-edge:
Yuuma is a sharp, quick-thinking man. He is always observing and noting his surroundings, something he has done his entire life. He's calm and easy-going when off-duty, happy to keep co-workers company and make conversation. On-duty, however, he prefers efficiency -- everything he says is simple and to the point. He always has his job in mind, and everything he does is done to finish that job as quickly and perfectly as he can. Nothing is wasted, neither time nor energy.
He has no hatred for ghouls as a species; he simply views them as humans who have the capability to be more dangerous and destructive than your average Joe. He does, however, have a bad habit of categorizing things as either 'good' or 'bad' -- rarely is there a middle ground. When he decides someone is evil, he will go to extreme lengths to kill them, to the point where he often no longer seems sane. Likewise, he does everything he can to protect those he deems 'good.' His criteria for what makes someone 'good' or 'bad' tend to be very loose, and highly affected by his emotional state, but most often boils down to: hurting innocent people, human or ghoul, lands you on his bad side.
Yuuma doesn't enjoy fighting and killing, he simply sees it as a necessity.
Like any other child, Yuuma was taught to fear ghouls. All the adults did, so he should too. That belief was challenged one night, when he was seven years old.
A frenzied ghoul broke into his home, killing both his parents. The traumatized boy could only stare as he saw the ghoul pulling his father and mother apart, before making his way over to Yuuma, kagune out and ready to strike. Before that could happen, however, a second ghoul entered the picture, and attacked the first. After a short struggle, the frenzied ghoul was dead. The man who had saved Yuuma looked around, and realized that the boy had lost his parents. He picked up the unmoving boy gently, deciding to unofficially adopt him.
It took a while for Yuuma to recover from that night, but eventually he did, and greatly warmed up to his adoptive father, who simply went by the name Jun. Jun raised Yuuma as best as he could, getting him to go to school and just generally live a normal, human life. he also taught the young boy about ghouls, and how a lot of them weren't evil monsters like the general public believed. The most important thing Jun passed down to Yuuma was his sense of justice. Jun spent most of his time being a vigilante, killing problematic ghouls and humans alike, always doing his best to protect those who did no wrong.
The CCG eventually, inevitably, caught up to him. Yuuma was 12, hanging out in his room, when he heard the loud commotion downstairs. Running down, he saw Jun dead at the feet of two Ghoul Investigators. At that moment, Yuuma hated humans, more than he had ever hated ghouls. They had killed a man who had done nothing but devote his life to keeping innocents safe.
The investigators would have killed Yuuma, too, had one not noticed that he wasn't a ghoul in time. From there, he was considered a victim, someone who had been held captive by Jun, and was promptly enrolled into the Academy.
During his years there, he grew into his own and shined. He vowed to continue Jun's work, deciding to become as strong as he could to eliminate all the evil in the world. Always the top of his class, he showed great promise, being extremely resourceful, analytical, and efficient. He graduated at 18 and was given the title of Rank 2 Investigator.
His very first assignment - a B rank ghoul who worked for another, more important ghoul that the CCG was lacking information on - gave a perfect example of the extreme lengths he'd go to. Simply put, to get closer to the ghoul, Yuuma ate human meat with no hesitation; it was an act that bought him just enough time to capture and extract information from the ghoul, before putting a bullet in his head.
During his first two years of service, Yuuma's track record was golden. Every job he had been assigned had been completed, with minimal casualties. He had received his first Quinque, and learnt to wield it well. He was known to disobey orders somewhat regularly, due to his own moral compass, much to the chagrin of his partner, Kazushi, but it always seemed to work out, meaning Yuuma only ever received slaps on the wrist.
He didn't like his partner, the leader of the duo, at all. The man was malicious, and loved killing any ghoul he came across. After seeing him cut down a child ghoul, Yuuma resolved to kill him.
The opportunity presented itself one fateful night.
The assignment was a fairly simple one, and very reminiscent of his first job: the duo were to track down and capture a rank A ghoul, who was part of a small, troublesome gang lead by an S-rank. The goal was to get information on the S rank.
The search lead them to an out-of-the way house, which appeared empty at first. It was quickly revealed to be an ambush, with all six members of the gang in question present. It should have been a slaughter -- 5 A-ranked ghouls and an S-rank, up against only two investigators, with the element of surprise on their side.
And as it turned out, it was exactly that: a slaughter. Having mapped out the entire house and everything in it in the short time he had walked around inside it, Yuuma developed a plan. He pick-pocketed Kazushi, taking the mans oft-used lighter, and kicked him into the ghouls' clutches, buying himself extra time. He scrambled through the kitchen, ripping a piece of paper off the fridge as he ran by it. He made his way down the hall, three of the ghouls chasing him after him, climbing over one another in a frenzy. He barreled into the house's side-garage, lighting the paper on fire and dropping it near the door. Scooping up two plastic gasoline cans, he tossed them hard at the walls beside the paper, causing them to burst and splash their contents everywhere. The fire immediately caught, and began spreading quickly thanks to how much fuel it had.
The ghouls leaped through the fire, kagune's out, ready to tear Yuuma apart. The young man did everything he could to bide his time -- he quickly shot off every bullet in his clip, and then brought down shelves and junk between him and his enemies. The blaze grew and grew, the heat and smoke making everyone's lives harder. All the while, Yuuma eyed the stack of propane tanks in the corner, willing them to explode from the heat.
And explode they did, spectacularly. After the first one went off, the rest quickly followed. Intense heat and pain hit Yuuma's right side, and a moment later the entire building started coming down. The young man was lucky; the blast knocked him back, sending him through the wall as it collapsed, out into the cold winter air. He scrambled back, unable to stop himself from groaning in pain. He realized with a little sadness that he had dropped his Quinque, which was now certainly destroyed.
His ordeal wasn't quite over yet. The S-ranked ghoul crawled out of the rubble, holding and biting into a charred arm. He was in far worse shape than Yuuma was, but the investigator knew he wouldn't be like that for long. If he was allowed a few moments to eat the arm, he'd certainly be well enough to kill.
So Yuuma did the only thing he could think of. He forced himself up and charged, jumping on the surprised ghoul and pinning him to the ground, raining violent blows down on his face. A weakened version of the ghouls kagune emerged, quickly striking at Yuuma. Yuuma reacted, knocking it downwards, causing it to pierce into the lower-left half of his stomach -- it hurt, but was far better than taking it in the chest. Driven by pain and adrenaline, Yuuma grabbed a nearby splintered piece of wood, and viciously drove it into the weak ghoul over and over. The kagune eventually receded out of Yuuma's stomach, and the exhausted boy realized his target was dead -- along with everyone else who had been in the building. He passed out right there, filled with pride and satisfaction that he'd been able to remove so much evil from existence in one night, no matter how lucky he had gotten.
When he woke up he was in a hospital, burns covering the entire outside of his right arm, all the way up his neck and ending just on the bottom right of his jaw. This would leave a noticeable scar.
He spent the next year recovering from his injuries and getting back into shape, while enjoying his small amount of new-found fame for single-handedly killing the gang of ghouls. He's finally been cleared for active-duty, and has received his new Quinque, Homewrecker, created from the S-ranked he killed. Now his goal is to get promoted, so he can go after more dangerous ghouls.
Here's my CS, ready for inspection. I may have gone a little overboard with the biography, so let me know if I need to dial it back a bit. I'll edit tomorrow.

Toma Tanaka - After School
Toma's smile widened at Aiko's words. "That's what I like to hear," he said, giving the boy a light, reassuring punch on the shoulder. He tossed his bag over his shoulder before leading the way out of the classroom. Glancing over at Aiko, a bit of worry flashed across his face for an instant, as he noted the less-than-stellar state he was in. Not that Toma himself was much better.
"Just don't push yourself too hard, yeah?" he said, looking away. "I think I know how taxing the past several days have been for you, I guess." He stopped at a vending machine, continuing as he inserted money. "No shame in taking a day off every once in a while."
He grabbed the two drinks he had bought with his left hand, and tossed one to Aiko. "Down it quick," he said with a smirk. "Arata won't be impressed if he sees us drinking this stuff just before practice."
As Toma worked on cracking the can open with his teeth, he receded momentarily into his own thoughts. There were more than a couple people he felt like he should apologize to. His parents, of course, but also Kotori and the big guy, Alexei. He had, at least partially, put the two of them into awkward spots when he had burst into the flower store.
With a sigh, he finished guzzling his drink. He eyed his injured wrist, bending it ever so slightly. A small frown formed on his face as the pain registered. He'd have to grab some tape to wrap it up, to help keep it from moving as he ran. He could find some in the nurse's office, but immediately discarded that idea. He'd heard too many horror stories about that place. There were both a Boxing club and an MMA club at the school, so there was bound to be some in the gym storage room. That option was much safer.
He looked back over towards Aiko as they walked. "So, how's your brother doing? I've overheard that he's okay, but I figure you're a more reliable source." Toma sort of also wanted to ask about how Noboru had been found, but decided against it, for no real reason other than being satisfied enough just knowing that he was fine.
