Respect from fear isn't worth having, Stella. And what happened in the past is irrelevant. What matters is the future. Not what your mom and I have done, but what you and your siblings are going to do. What we'll all do together. You earn respect by following conventions people make. Is that what we should do? True self-esteem comes not from the approval of others, but from your approval of yourself. Embarrassment comes from wanting the approval of others, and feeling that you fail to have it. It's not something to ever worry about, okay?
