So I recently got back into X and Y. (PM me your Friend Code if you care to: 0044-4249-9562)
It got me into thinking what my "real" favorite Pokemon are. This list (and hopefully the discussion) disregards legendary-status, starters, and statistical and competitive values. This list goes by design, flavor, and even personal attachments. Here's my top 32 and why:

1. Ninetales - I've always liked this Pokemon. I always consider it Fire-Psychic since it's moveset and lore make it out to be either Psychic or Ghost. I like the elegant design and Vulpix would totally be my starting Pokemon if they were real. [Extrasensory, Shadow Ball, Flamethrower, Confuse Ray for the win!]

2. Breloom - The third generation was one of my favorites (after the second). One of my first playthroughs I trained a Shroomish knowing it would evolve into Breloom. I also liked the Effect Spore ability and found it infinitely interesting. The typing was also original and I loved Mach Punch and Sky Uppercut with Giga Drain and Leech Seed.

3. Medicham - Another interesting type match up that I appreciated. I also liked the design. Having a Pokemon know Hi Jump Kick and Psychic was cool to me and I still find it interesting to this day.

4. Jumpluff - This was a recent favorite of mine and realized it was the first Grass Flying type (I found Tropius interesting but didn't care for its design). Its fast, which was also interesting to learn, and learned Bounce instead of Fly, which I found odd. Even though its not the strongest, I found it cute and almost playable.

5. Espeon - The only eeveelution that I ever cared about. Again, I like elegance and this Pokemon has it. I liked it during a time I thought Psychics ruled and just found it pleasant to look at.

6. Shiftry - I found its design and type-match up interesting as well as its evolution process. With Shiftry I learned that evolving right away wasn't always the best option. I liked the move Extrasensory (which is a major reason Ninetales is first) and found Shiftry to be considerably good in battle.

7. Flygon - I didn't much care for it until Garchomp came around. With Garchomp being over-powered, I enjoyed the idea of favoring the original Ground Dragon. I know this is petty, but I learned to like its design as well.

8. Froslass - I don't really know why I enjoy this Pokemon so much. The type-matching was original and I always had a fondness for Snorunt. I never liked Glalie so this was a great alternative. Though she's weak, she's, again, elegant and fun to use.

9. Bisharp - He's just really cool to me. I like its design and the idea that he can't touch himself without getting cut (hurr hurr) is a bit humorous. But its typing and design were unique and I found instant attraction to it. It's just a pain that you find it so late and it evolves so late. :/

10. Masquerain - I liked the idea of a Bug being able to use Bubblebeam for some reason. As soon as I figured this out, Masquerain was a part of my team in Ruby Version (Another solidification of stalling evolution). I wish they would add another Water Bug type, but Masquerain is a good enough pseudo-replacement for now. ;)

11. Ledian - I always found Ledian adorable yet impossible to play with. Ledyba was so difficult to train and Ledian was difficult to win with. I always imagined it being a Bug Fighting type since it learned all the punches. Also, ladybugs are just fricken cute.

12. Bellossom - The idea of having this tiny flower child kicking butt with Petal Dance is both awesome and adorable. I've never played with her but being the first branching evolution that I noticed was interesting and unique.

13. Sunflora - I've actually trained one of these and it's almost impossible. Slow and with low defenses, Sunkern and Sunflora are possibly the worst Pokemon right after Magikarp. Probably worse since it doesn't drastically improve after evolution. Still, they're cute and nice to look at. ;)

14. Sawsbuck - This took me a while to grow fond of, but I enjoy the seasons and the idea of a Pokemon changing with them is interesting. Also, being a Grass Normal type was unique and this Pokemon is a more attractive version of Stantler (and actually usable). I also like its unique moveset.

15. Toxicroak - I've never used him but I always thought his design was wicked cool. The type match-up was unique and I thought Poison Jab was a cool move.

16. Lanturn - Again, a unique type match up and a useful ability made Lanturn a quick favorite of mine. I liked its bulk and thought Chinchou was infinitely adorable.

17. Houndoom - This moved down because it became so popular (I know, I'm such a hipster). But I always thought it was scary cool and thought the Rocket Admin's Houndoom was difficult of which to take care.

18. Archeops - I've read that some people hate Archeops but I thought it was cool. It was a powered-down Aerodactyl but still useful. It's also kind of pretty. xP

19. Chimecho - I don't know what it is about Chimecho but I always found it cute and nice to look at. It's along the same lines as Sunflora but with less appreciation.

20. Banette - This was the first Pokemon of which I was actually frightened to some degree. After reading its description, I found it even more dark and all the more interesting.

21. Sandslash - I've always liked Sandslash. I thought its design was cool but never found myself playing with it.

22. Ampharos - Mareep is adorable and I liked the idea of a non-fast electric type. For some reason I like the idea of Pokemon learning a random yet supremely flavorful Rock-type move, Power Gem (yes, I'm looking at you, Vespiquen).

23. Pyroar - Finally, a lion. I think it's a cool idea and even more unique that it's Normal and Fire. It's moveset is also quite flavorful.

24. Grumpig - I thought a bouncing piglet was adorable, and then I learned that it would die if it doesn't, and I found it infinitely more adorable. Also, another Bouncer which I thought was interesting. I've trained one once but it never made it to the Elite Four with Blaziken and Breloom.

25. Crobat - One of the only competitive Pokemon on this list, probably. I thought its method of evolution was intriguing. It's also a plus that it's not as ugly as Golbat. Its method of flight was also interesting (I never knew if they were legs or secondary wings...).

26. Weavile - This is a like for a friend. My best friend raved over Sneasle specifically and thought Weavile was cool. So even though this is mostly an ode to them, I think its typing is unique as well as its usefulness (or lackthereof).

27. Chandelure - One of my first favorites of the fifth generation but quickly fell down the list. I think making Pokemon out of previously inanimate objects is interesting, though only for Ghost types, and only if they look cool (lookin' at you, Rotom...).

28. Gardevoir - Another quick favorite of the third generation but its popularity made me seek out others to favorite instead. I'm currently using the one Diantha gives you post game and her elegance remains a key factor of why I like her so much.

29. Dragalge - This is a more recent favorite for having caught one and trying it out (for typing purposes, mainly. I also caught a shiny one! :D). I maxed out its Defenses and I find the idea of algae and seaweed as a Pokemon both humorous and interesting (it's holding leftovers for the idea that it's eating itself xP). There's a level of elegance here.

30. Mothim - He actually replaced Butterfree here. I liked that Butterfree could learn Psychic and such but Mothim seems like the more wholesome Bug, whatever that means. I like his design but never used him much in-game. You wouldn't know it but the Bug type is one of my favorites (after Fire and before Fighting).

31. Zangoose - I always thought Zangoose was cool and the idea of rivalries between Pokemon intrigued me.

32. Talonflame - The first non-legendary Fire-Flying type had to be a favorite, but it's not the coolest. I still think its interesting and the naming was obvious (to the point of being lazy) yet flavorful. I'm still waiting on a Fire-Dragon type (and not a Legendary one).

So, what are some of your favorites that others might not take interest in? What's one Pokemon that always has to be in your party? Was there anything in my list that you agree or disagree with? Since there was a constant theme of "elegance," are you surprised that Milotic isn't in the list?

Yeah... So, I think I'll have to break your rules here. Right away. Because, y'know, some people prioritise different things. But here's a quick list...

• Articuno is and always be, majestic as fuck. I'm too much of a min-max whore to ever use it on anything, but design-wise I love it.
• Breloom is also one of my favourites, though admittedly for competetive memories. Spore is just that evil.
• Flygon is another one I just love because of it's design. It's got built-in sand goggles. It's also one of my favourite surprise evolutions ever.
• Ampharos, because when I played g/s/c I thought three stage evolutions were the best pokemon and well... Learning there was an electric one was awesome. Also Mega Ampharos is fucking fabulous.
• Lapras, is just beautiful. I didn't give a fuck about Ash' Butterfree but when Lapras left I stopped liking the show. Like, I literally cared more about Lapras than everything else in that entire show.
• Darmanitan is one of my favourites not because of it's design, but because it was my personal wrecking ball in b/w. It drove through errbody in-game. It's also my bp-farming machine. Machine.
• Krokorok 'cause it's a gangster. idc what people say about Scrafty, Krokorok is the real hustler.
• Ho-oh. It's everything I ever wanted Torchic to be, but nooooooo... Like Articuno, Ho-oh is majestic as fuck. Which is why it's awesome. It's also actually good, which is nice.
• Golurk. It learns Fly.[/topic]
• Combusken. It might have gotten the most dissapointing evolution ever (I totally thought it would evolve itno a majestic fire bird, probably because I could never read Japanese and before gen 3 didn't use fighting ever) it was the original fire/fighting and my introduction to the awesome of the fighting type.
• Before Staraptor I thought Fearow was as good as it got when it came to normal/flying. I was wrong. It went from my personal taxi to brave birdin' close combatin' monster destroyer.
• Mienshao. 'cause it's evil. Fake out, U-turn, and oh BTW regenerator-ability. When I saw Mienfoo in my first B/W run I knew I had to have it. By which I mean I didn't have a fighting type and only 5 mons in my team and I was so close to the e4 I knew I had to round out my team. It grew on me and it's high speed HJK was the only thing that managed to save me from the Hydreigon... I was underleveled... I wasn't prepared...
• Mismagius, because they made a wizard-themed mon look good (unlike certain others... Cough, Delphox, cough) It's like this evil cackling witch, and well... It's evil. I like that. Ghost pokédex entries are the best.
• Tropius. It is huge dinosaur that flies with the most unconventional leaves for wings and has a banana beard and is a HM-god. What is not to like?
• Heracross. It's a beetle with a giant nose horn. Except a pokémon. It's one of my favourite insects in pokémon form.
• Volcarona, because it's a legendary that could breed! Don't you just love playing games in a language you can't read? idk why, it's design is alright, it's pretty powerful but I rarely use it on any team, but for some reason I really like it.
• Aegislash, probably my favourite from XY. I love this thing.
• Togekiss is another great normal/flying. Well, it's fairy/flying now, but it went from that retarded baby Misty carried around to an actually cool looking mon. Also paraflinch hax. So much paraflinch hax.
• Riolu... Because prankster copycat roar... Because fuck everything. Fuck everything without priority.
• Lombre, because it's based off a kappa and I like those critters. Also it has a duckface. It's hilarious.
• Gastrodon, because fuck rain. Fuck thunder. Fuck every team ever being the same. I'm looking at you, b/w ou.

Damn, I've sank way too much time in this franchise...

Electabuzz. What a bro.

Here are a list of some of my favorites in no particular order.

• Crobat. Zubat is terrible, Golbat is decent, but still nothing great... and Crobat? Crobat is the reward you get for training that annoying little Zubat so far.


• Sandslash. Such a great design, I don't even know what else to say.


• Heracross. This thing, is great. Definitely an underrated bug-type; this thing has some crazy attack power. I loved it long before it had a Mega Evolution.


• Charizard. Ok, fine, tell me it's overrated; tell me it can be KO'd with stealth rock; tell me Blastoise is better; I don't care. If you ask me, Charizard is the baddass dragon I always saw it as when I was growing up - and its new Mega Evolutions give us plenty of new things to do with it. I always loved Charizard, and no amount of the use of the word "overrated" will change that for me.


• Lapras. This is sort of a new one to add on the list, since I didn't really appreciate this Pokemon until I recently caught a shiny one in X, but when I did, I realized this thing is just plain gorgeous. It has a great design, and beyond that, it's actually pretty great to use in battle, too - particularly thanks to its water/ice type and ability to learn psychic. It's a great thing to have on a team, and to look at.


• Skarmory. Yet another underrated battler. I've had this guy on my team before in a couple different playthroughs, it's pretty fantastic for carrying you through the game. Not to mention awesome-looking.


• Pidgeot. Pidgey is one of the first Pokemon you encounter in what was probably the first game many of us played; thus making it one of the first Pokemon we all caught. And Pidgey is a decent Pokemon to have on your team at the start, sure, but it has surprising staying power on a team - holding its own in battle and preventing you from needing an HM slave you can teach fly to. And when one of the first Pokemon you catch on your journey sticks with you for so long, going through so much, and still does so well, that's worth appreciating.


• Kangaskhan. Well, I knew I couldn't put Missingno on this list (lol), but since I do love glitches, this Pokemon earned a spot on my list for practically being a symbol of that love of glitches. Plus, it's hard to resist nicknaming one Kagaskhan.


• Gyarados. Old favorite, but I've always loved the story of a Pokemon as weak as Magikarp evolving into something as impressive as Gyarados. Definitely the biggest improvement between evolution levels that I've ever seen.


• Sceptile. Best grass-type starter. /done


• Delphox. One of the best designs I've seen for a starter in generations. I mean look at that thing - that's just gorgeous.


• Shedinja. Weirdest Pokedex entry. Weirdest method of obtaining a Pokemon. Weirdest thing to use in battle... it's just weird, but I like that. It makes it unique, and with the right moveset, it can be a real troll in battle.


• Zoroark. The illusion ability is just plain fun - especially when you disguise it as a Shedinja and make people think they have to switch out in order to do anything, thus forcing them to waste a turn.


• Flygon. Fell in love with the design when I first saw it in that Jirachi movie as a kid. It wasn't until long after that I finally got to use it in-game, mostly because I never would've predicted that it evolved from Trapinch. But when I did get to use one of these, oh boy did I love it. Training it was a bitch, but once it finally evolved all the way? One of my favorite dragon-types.


• Swirlix. A lot of people say that this guy is the reason why they hate fairy type, but for me... I dunno why, but I fell in love with this thing the first time I encountered one. Its adorableness was just too much for me to bear. One of my favorite fairy-types. Speaking of which,


• Xerneas. No one can tell me that all fairy-types are adorable, dainty things. Xerneas is a baddass creature who will moonblast its enemies to high hell. Make fun of it and it will sodomize you with its horns.


• Noivern. This thing is just plain gorgeous. Whoever's idea it was to take the generational bat and turn it into a dragon for once is a genius. I love this design. I love it so much. It's beautiful. There is nothing more to say.

Haha! Kestrel, Kaga...too funny. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has "foolish" favorites that aren't necessarily competitive but just fun to have or appreciate the design of.

Kestrel: I know Staraptor is one of the better birds, but I always thought it was ugly. :(
I actually liked Mismagius. I used one in Pearl and thought of her exactly how you did. I couldn't help but cackle when I sent her out sometimes. >.>
I have to agree with you on Delphox. Even though it was my starter, I can't get over the hair puffs that look like wings coming out of its ears. Too weird.
I actually didn't think Mienshou was any good. I thought its design of was interesting but didn't think it held any value. I'm interested to know that it does and maybe now I wouldn't mind trying to train one.

Kaga: I think that's another reason I actually care for Crobat to some degree. ;)

I'm actually using Pidgeot in my second party in Y right now. I forgot how good it was. It's fun to use.
How do you get over those hair puffs, or whatever they are, coming from its ears (Delphox)?
I guess I'm not alone in my interest in Flygon. I just feel like mine is less legitimate. :(

Is Noivern any good in battle?

Follow up question: What would your top three favorite typings be? I guess dual-types can be allowed.
If it wasn't gathered from my post, it is Fire, Bug, then Fighting.

But but I like Delphox's ear hair. :( Noivern (excellent design), Chandelure (badass), Tropius (DAT 3D), Shedinja (badass) and Lapras (nice all-round) are pretty great in my opinion too. I used to be all over Flygon, and it's still alright, but I'm a bit meh on it now. Same goes for Blaziken (although a bit more so) and Heracross (a bit less so).

My top three favourites are here, others I like are below them. :P

• Sigilyph is my favourite Pokemon. I've always been a huge fan of strange and ancient Pokemon, and Sigilyph fits the bill. Interesting name (sigil + glyph) and surprising competitive value don't hurt. Sigilyph's been a faithful companion in a lot of my runs, I love it. <3 <3


• Crinoids, on the other hand, are my favourite real animal, so Cradily is also high on the list. It's an interesting and menacing fossil, and the probably the biggest underdog of the type chart- Rock is a bad defensive type, Grass is an ok defensive type, put them together and you get a surprisingly good tank.


• Scolipede! Talk about badass, even without Speed Boost. I've actually taken out competitive teams (albeit on a simulator) with a Defense Curl + Rollout Scolipede. I used it in-game and it worked exceedingly well. All round probably one of the coolest Pokemon in the game, I think.



• Maractus is adorable and it's grown on me very quickly. Doesn't sound like there's much to say but I love it.


• Tangela and Tangrowth. Woo, tentacles + Terrifying plant monster + Tanky as fuck!


• Shuckle is a Pokemon that has a lot going for it in my opinion. It's surprisingly usable, with Sticky Web, Power Split, Contrary Shell Smash, Infestation, and even the odd Power Trick + Trick Room variant. It's also based on a lichen thing, which is cool, and it's cute.


• Pinsir was one of my first favourites, fell out of favour, then it received a lovely Mega and now I like it again.


• Swalot is a giant spleen.


• Relicanth is another fossil-esque Pokemon that I really like, and I'm not sure why. It looks good but not amazing, its name is good but not amazing, its stats are actually very good but still not amazing. Oh well, love is love. <3


• Tropius is really, really weird, but I've always liked it and now I like it more after seeing how it flies in 3D. The fact that it can also use moves like Dragon Dance, Dragon Pulse and Outrage also helps.


• I like Gastrodon for entirely non-competitive reasons, namely, cool three-eyed nudibranch that breeds with everything.


• I'm fond of Drifloon and Drifblim because of their uniqueness in stats, typing and ability, and how eerie they are. They're also surprisingly versatile in competitive play.


• I absolutely love Crustle and Dwebble. For one, the moves that are viable on them actually make a lot of sense design-wise, unlike Torkoal's Shell Smash and Garchomp's Earthquake. Jolly Crustle was my first random shiny, which was great because I've always liked their apocalyptic-looking Shiny form, and I raised one from a Dwebble in my first BW2 run.


• I didn't even play Red/Blue and I still love Venusaur. It's adaptable, it's well-designed, and it worked great in X/Y as a Toxic staller. Probably my favourite starter.


• Scraggy and Scrafty are hilarious and appropriate Dark/Fighting types that worked well for me in-game.


• Carbink is cute and simple, it's another Maractus case.


• Trevenant and Phantump are both scary ghosts in their own way, with excellent designs. I haven't gotten a chance to use them in-game yet, but I'm EV training one and planning to use another in my next XY run.


• Bergmite and Avalugg are the same as Phantump and Trevenant in nearly all respects. Avalugg's worked quite well for me competitively, while Bergmite I find very charming and I intend to use it on my next play.

That's all that I have outside of a bunch more Unova Pokemon. I loved that generation so, so much. Might put them in here when I next have time.

Is Noivern any good in battle?

85/80/80 defences, 97 Special Attack, 123 Speed, 75ish Attack. Access to Boomburst, U-Turn, Fire Blast, Draco Meteor and Super Fang. Typically used as a Choice Specs attacker, ranked Underused by Smogon.

I am not at all ashamed for knowing this off hand.

I actually dislike competitive play entirely because it disregards so much flavor that Pokemon should have. I actually become upset when a Pokemon knows a move it "shouldn't" (like Kyogre knowing Thunder or Starmie knowing Thunderbolt or a wild Buneary knowing Ice Beam). I can't like it and I can't indulge in it. So that question about Noivern was purely in-game value.
That's why when I RP Pokemon, I limit them to specific moves and if I run them, I make everyone do it (mwahaha!). I simply don't care for the "competitive" movesets and care more for the flavor and style of the Pokemon itself. I don't know why I'm so anal about it, but I am. >.>

AT: and you shouldn't be ashamed. It's good to be able to know a lot about something you're interested in! It's just that I have no idea what "underused" and the rest of those things mean. I don't even know what "parahax" means since Spore makes a Pokemon sleep, not paralyzed. I've watched quite a few competitive battles on youtube but never really understood some of the lingo.
But then again, this discussion isn't for competitive play (which you talked about with most of your favorites). It's more about flavor and personal connections. Granted, you being competitive will have a lot to do with what you like and dislike, which is fine. Just something I noticed, not hatin'. ;)

Kyogre summons rainstorms. Naturally the Thunder/Lightning is part of the territory. :P

1. Musharna: I got into Munna because someone else on another forum insulted it when the fifth generation was coming out. I thought it was cute, and posted adorable fanart of Munna to troll him. I eventually grew to like Munna (and Musharna when the evolution was introduced) as a Pokemon. The things one can do with Dream Mist, and a little imagination. 8D Moreso after I used it in-game. She's bulky enough to take hits and dish them out.

2. Togekiss: I like Fairy types in general, but Togekiss is my favorite. (Even before Fairy existed). It's an adorable angel that spreads happiness to all. What's not to love? Also, Serene Grace + Thunder Wave + Air Slash = Frustrated opponent

3. Flygon: It's an adorable Dragon type that's easy to get. The other Dragons at the time were too rare, came too late in the game, was a boring Normal/Flying type (Swablu), and/or are a pain in the arse to evolve.

4. Gardevoir/Gallade (Their tied) They're both elegant, yet somehow cute at the same time.

There are more Pokemon I like, but then this list would be ridiculously long. Also, a lot of the reasons for liking them are the same, and it would get repetitive. :P They're either cute/look good, they're good in battle, and/or they're easy to get in-game.

Pokemon I dislke.

Hypno: Musharna does the dream eater thing better, honey. :P You are a pedo.

Charizard: I got bullied when I was younger because I preferred Pikachu over Charizard. I still have resentment for that wannabe Dragon to this day... >_>

Ferrothorn: Although now that it doesn't resist EVERYTHING anymore, it's not so much of an issue but I still find it annoying and not cute. :P

Blaziken: When I use it, it dies before it gets to do anything. The opponent uses it, it sweeps my whole team... :/

Emboar: I just... don't like it... :/

I've never been a much of a Pokemon player, almost zero competitive play and I've only completed a couple of the video games (as a kid I got fed up with the games because I couldn't just level up an Abra to get Alakazam, had to do the stupid trading thing and nobody I knew had the cord for it), so my pick is actually based largely on the card game, which I was into when I was a little kid. Everyone else was all about Charizard and stuff, but once I read his description thing that said his IQ was estimated at 5000 I decided he was infinitely superior to silly dragons. I ended up getting 3 different versions of Alakazam, all of them holographic cards (which was the coolest shit when I was a kid, sort of equivalent to shiny versions in the video games), by trading with friends. The best part about it was being better at the game than said friends and smashing their conventionally cool Pokemon with my ridiculous Alakazam deck.

So yeah, Alakazam is my sole favorite both due to nostalgia and really liking his design/concept.

I still remember back when I collected the cards my favorite card always was a holographic "dark alakasam". Badass shitz.

My favorite would be ampharos, with metagross following with a close second.

My least favorites would be a long list of a vast majority of the 5th gen pokemon.

I have a feeling the +20 points it gets to Defense is solely because the beard is capable of absorbing impacts.

I really really really fucking hate Seel. It's a Pokemon based on a seal! It lives in the same locations as a seal! It looks like a seal! Its name is basically the same!



But at least it's got a small horn on its head.
When people tell me they think later generations are shitty, I point them in the direction of Seel and give them a club.

Manz I like:

• Hoppip: so cute, so useless. Just generally quite a well-meaning little critter. N'awr.


• Whimsicott: similar deal, but surprisingly a bit of a sweeper if you train it right.


• Sableye: the Sableye on my team is such a little bitch. Fake Out, Shadow Sneak, Toxic and Will o Wisp combined with Prankster? You mad bro?


• Spritzee and Aromatisse: French! Fabulous! Perfume! Yay! As well as somehow slightly sinister...


• Inkay and Malamar: as well as having an incredible design and relationship with one another, the one is as crazyawesome as the other is sweet. Plus, they're base on cuttlefish, which are basically the closest thing the real world has to real Pokemon.
