THE BACKSTORY

One hundred years prior to the start of the story, there was a legendary swordsmith named Kayou Kuso. Throughout his lifetime, he was credited with making high quality katanas, to the point where the emperor of Japan acknowledged his skill. It was in his old age, however, that the emperor's son requested him to make seven blades of the "highest quality that has ever been seen." Once presented, the emperor's son was displeased with them, and ridiculed the old man. He demanded them to be remade, but Kayou refused. He said they were the finest swords to ever be made and that it would be impossible to improve them. Enfuriated, the emperor's son had him thrown out of the castle and his name dishonored. Shamed, Kayou Kuso retreated with his blades and gave up the art of swordsmithing. It was unknown when he died, due to his reclusive nature, but ten years after that event, bad things began to happen.

The man that had shamed the legendary swordsmith became emperor ten years later, and immediately there were problems. In the far north of Japan, strange monsters as black as the night, called Oni, began to appear and wreak havoc upon the land. At first, despite the ferocity of these demons, there was little concern over the matter. The armies of the land were more than capable enough to keep the demons under control. However, as time dragged on and the weeks became months, the months became years, and the years became decades, the invasion never faltered. In fact, it only grew in intensity. More demons continued to appear, and they grew stronger too. This proved to be too much as the years dragged on and the nation of Japan began to lose ground to these creatures. Now, ninety years after the start of the invasion, the demons have destroyed nearly half of Japan, leaving the emperor and the shogunate in a panic.

The current emperor, the third generation to be in command during this invasion, is growing desperate. His army is wearing thin. By this point the daimyo have all put aside their differences in order to join forces against the Oni. As grim as the situation has become, a recent discovery may have turned the tides. The shogun's most prized samurai, Yasushi Miyoshi, combatted Oni for the first time and it was discovered that his katana was able to destroy the demons in droves. When questioned, he explained that his blade had been passed down his family line for a few generations, originating about one hundred years back. This led to the discovery that Kayou Kuso had distributed his final blades after his humiliation, and also the discovery that the blades had legendary power and abilities. When the emperor tried to relinquish Yasushi of his sword, Kouhei, he found that nobody else could even draw the blade. The swords chose their owners. With this in sight, it was determined that the power of these blades would be necessary to combat the demon invasion, and Yasushi was charged with the task of gathering the other six swords.

THE STORY

After gathering all the swords and their owners, Yasushi Miyoshi brings them all back to the emperor for their instructions. They are told the history behind the swords and their mission, which is to travel deep into the Oni territory and find a way to end the invasion and destroy the demons. This is emphasized not to be optional, and the seven owners are to be accompanied full force by a small battallion of soldiers. While they travel Japan, they will learn of the mysteries that surround their swords and the demons that stand in their way. Perhaps they will learn a bit about the emperor and shogunate too, and hopefully a bit about each other. But one thing for certain is that the road ahead is difficult and unknown. After all... nobody that has strayed north has ever returned.

Name:
Akio Kenjou
Age:
20
Sex:
Male
Occupation:
Merchant
Sword:
Hasaki
Personality:
Born into a merchant family, Akio has been pleasing customers all his life. As such, he has developed an agreeable personality that allows him to at least fake a smile for even the most rude and obnoxious people. In addition to his pleasant demeanor, he can also be very persuasive, especially when he actually knows what he is talking about. His agreeable demeanor has its limits, though, as he will not tolerate any kind of violence or vandalism. Of course, there is little he can do to prevent such things himself, but he will be the first person to call the guards and has a knack for accurately describing criminal’s faces. Akio is a stranger to danger and has never left the safety of the south, let alone faced an Oni. While the prospect of fighting monsters terrifies him, his courage has yet to be put to the test.
Background:
Akio was the second son of Shugo and Amane Kenjou, and had lived in southern Japan all his life. The family has run a successful shop in the city that sells all kinds of miscellaneous goods from shoes to swords. His father would often leave for long periods of time with his older brother to peddle their goods to other cities, but Akio would stay behind with his mother to run the shop. One day, his father came home with a new blade in his hand. He said he got it from a broke old man who was desperate for some coin, so Shugo bought it from him for a ridiculously low price. Even if the blade was in poor condition, they could still turn a profit on it. The problem was that it seemed to be stuck in its hilt. Shugo took it to a swordsmith, but even he had no luck, so Hasaki became a mantelpiece displayed above the counter to get customers asking questions.

One day when Akio was cleaning the store, the blade fell off the mantel. Akio picked it up by the sheath, and just like that the blade began to slip out. Curious, Akio drew the blade completely to see what kind of condition it was in, having been neglected for so long. Apparently, it was in great condition, but, alas, it was wood. It was worth more as a mantelpiece than as merchandise, so back on display it went. That was, until Yasushi Miyoshi arrived.

At first, Akio thought that Yasushi was simply entertaining some idle curiosity about the blade by inquiring about it; after all a renowned samurai like him was bound to have a blade ten times better than anything a lowly merchant could offer him. However, after hearing the story of the blade, Yasushi determined that it was a legendary blade. Akio thought it was a joke, but one was not to laugh at the seal of the emperor, so reluctantly, Akio bid his family goodbye and joined the samurai on his quest to save humanity.
Skills:
Charismatic and convincing salesman; great at various kinds of math, especially bookkeeping; having dealt with many kinds of goods, he has become clever and unusually educated for a commoner by devising practical uses for a wide variety of things; has a knack for games of strategy like Shogi, Mahjong, and Go. You could say he has a “sharp” mind.
Equipment:
Since he has never traveled before, Akio can only guess at what would be useful in the far north. He brings fifty feet of rope; a small knife (for cutting, not combat); a warm cloak, scarf, boots, and gloves; a blank notebook with ink and writing utensils to document their journey.
Notes:
Akio has never been in a fight in his life, let alone practiced swordsmanship. He will have to learn how to save himself before he can save Japan.

That is because the two characters presented in the first post are the respective owners of those two blades. XD

@ruronihs: I like him. Accepted. I will update the first post to contain a list with links to all the characters.

I want to have a character that's going to need to learn how to fight from the ground up, so I figure a sword that cuts anything is a good way to balance out an inability to fight with any degree of precision. Typical "shounen protagonist trump card" nonsense. lol.

Name:
Saito Takasu
Age:
17
Sex:
Male
Occupation:
Assassin
Sword:
Soyokaze
Personality:
Saito is a quiet, reserved person, rarely speaking. This has helped him stay alive in his profession, as he is rarely noticed, and never remembered. Saito has trouble concentrating on more then one person at a time, and is very bad at recognizing faces. He rarely speaks to strangers, and is very blunt. Saito is seen as rude, and inconsiderate by other assassins, but most just accept that the unsocial parts of him come with the business he's in. Saito has never fully unsheathed Soyokaze, as he believes it's power is too great to be held by a mortal such as himself. He knows all too well its power of corruption.
Background:
Saito was born into a wealthy family, with two older brothers (Juzo and Utamara respectively), and a younger sister (Emiko). At the age of 7, after a large dispute over the throne, the younger of Saito's two brothers, Utamara killed himself. The family was in shock for a while, and although the family never fully recovered, life moved on. When Saito was 11, Juzo raped Saito's younger sister, and after confessing to a priest, committed Seppuku, making Saito the eldest. Saito was 13 when his dad died, but instead of becoming the lead of the Takasu family, he abandoned his home, and began to train under a ninja who never revealed his name.

Saito mastered the art of the sword at the age of 15. Saito's sensei was assassinated near the end of Saito's training, which forced Saito to go into hiding. Eventually, he took on the surname Inoguchi to prevent his past from being discovered, and to keep his family from finding out his new profession.

At the age of 16, Saito was assigned the mission to kill the head of the Takasu family, his sister Emiko. She was seen as a disgrace for becoming the head of the family, and not immedietly marrying herself off. Saito accepted the mission, but upon arriving at his old home, instead of killing Emiko, he explained the situation, and fled with her. In an unexpected turn of events, Emiko revealed to Saito that she had obtained the cursed sword Soyokaze after becoming the head of the family, and attempted to kill Saito. He fought back, and successfully killed her, barely escaping with his own life. Afterwards, Saito went into isolation to mourn the death of his sister, before finally going back into his life of being an assassin. Saito has never actually used the cursed sword.

Saito was tracked down by Yasushi after he made an attempt on the emperor's life. After having him arrested, Yasushi discovered that the boy was in possession of Soyokaze, and it appeared that he was able to draw the sword. With this in mind, he brought Saito back to the capitol to assist with the emperor's quest. Saito seemed quite dissmissive of the thought that he might end up working for the prey he had hunted, but eventually conceded at the promise that he would be kept alive. Saito agreed to help the Emperor.
Skills:
Saito is stealthy, and has an impressive amount of endurance, being able to run for very long amounts of time without becoming tired. Although Saito is quite skilled with the sword, his unfriendly nature leads to trouble .
Equipment:
The cursed sword Soyokaze, two poison tipped kunai, a dagger, and a katana.
Notes:
Saito's theme song.

Name: Kawazoe Kyousuke

Age: 18

Sex: Male

Occupation: Thief

Sword: Soyokaze

Personality: Kawazoe is dark at times, not much of a joker and very philosophical. He does not mind breaking the rules, or bending them if it helps him reach his goal. His loyalty is undying to those who are willing to break the cold surface he set around himself.

Background: Kawazoe was born into a family who quickly abandoned him, leaving him on the doorstep of their home as they moved from the small town they called home. An old man, and ex-guard to the local noble. The old man taught Kawazoe well in the samurai arts, until he was forced to fight off the Oni to allow Kawazoe and the rest of the village to flee. The only thing Kawazoe could carry with him was his masters old Kusarigama that he was training Kawazoe with when the Oni attacked. Once Kawazoe was resettled he quickly attempted to find ways to be useful, he couldn't find any, and without his teacher he could not learn, he had nothing left. He travelled to a new town, one where a noble presided, hoping to be of service to him. His service was denied. Kawazoe truly had nothing left so he turned to crime, his last resort stealing what he needed to survive, until he felt an undeniable urge to break into the local weapon-smith's house, being guided to a blade mounted on the wall. After grabbing it, he could feel the power surging, and when he began to run he realized he was moving beyond anything he should have been able to.

Skills: Climbing, run with good speed and endurance, quick tongue (not comebacks but he has a way of convincing people)

Equipment: Karuta Tatami armour, 2 Kusarigama

Notes: *anything the above sections did not cover goes here*

I dunno, I feel this would've been better if the weapons were more than just a collection of katanas, considering the variety of japanese weapons and their story. A kanabo would be a better fit for a weapon symbolizing sheer brute strength, since it's a large spiked truncheon often associated with imagery of oni IRL. A naginata would be better used as the weapon that can effortlessly cut through anything, imo: for a time naginatas were seen as an ideal weapon for women, as its reach would allow them to lessen any advantages in size, weight and strength an opponent might have, so the ability to allow even an unskilled wielder to inflict great wounds would be a good match. A shakujo, a type of ringed staff, would probably work better for both morality and spirituality, as it was a religious symbol for buddhism first and a weapon second. A weapon that seeks inconspicuousness would more than likely be an easily hidden knife; some type of weaponized tool such as a kama; a canesword or even a regular staff. I'd also consider a canesword for the weapon that grants improved sight, if only because of its link to Zatoichi.

That's just me and what I think, take it or leave it. I'd like to reserve Kashoku since Chromehound already called Yoken. I'll have a CS up tomorrow or on Thursday at the latest.
