"I was but a boy when the Diadem of Calydon was placed atop my head. My father left unto me a realm threatening to buckle and collapse populated by unmotivated idiots. My subjects were petty dukes who would sooner destroy my realm and carve it amongst themselves in greed than bask in joined glory under their King. A usurparious and avaricious lot though they were, I found use for them. I directed their greed from within to the enemies of our realm: fastidious Astelesia across the Rift. As a boy who had seen but seventeen winters, I herded the squabbling dukes and what hosts they could muster across the valley and into the the Astelesian Dominion. There, in the burning ruins of Melida, I whetted Calydon's thirst for riches on the plunder of vanquished Astelesia. Wealth looted from foreign coffers flowed into my cities. And like newborn hogs suckling at the sow's teet, my cried out for more.

So I gave them more.

On my eighteenth winter, I ordered the great Hycadian Forest cut to the last sapling. Those Hycadian timbers formed the backbone of a fleet that would carry my legions across the sea. My fleet three hundred barques strong rowed across the Straits of Calydon and set recalcitrant Ivas and Ibara ablaze. The bloated merchant ports beyond the two isles were no better suited against Calydon's hunger. The ports burned behind massive walls and we plucked the gold and silver from the ash and bone.

And still they were not satisfied. So I pressed Calydon's hosts forward beyond the extent of our maps - south to the brink of the habitable world where naked savages with ebony skin defied the Calydonian host. Nor was I repulsed by the spire-cities of Sjarram - the fell magics of their sorcerers did naught against Calydonian stength-at-arms.

Transepruxia, Colcaro, the Qarima Empire, the Gorgorrans and so many more - all fell at my command. My legions were invincible, my advance inexorable. All the world was to be Calydonian - the world was to be all mine."





Welcome to (RP NAME)!!!


Syros is dead and the world is up for grabs. The Calydonians have conquered the known world under the banner of Syros the Unparalleled, and in the wake of his death without an heir that same world is being clawed over by the remaining families. You will take the place of one of these royal families as they fight for power, or even just to stay alive, in a world where men still fight with bronze and the remnants of newly conquered peoples dream of a day when the old powers will return. This RP will include...

-1: A Pre-Designed Jumping Off Point. There are a few requirements for every app. We will start the RP off with a battle. So long as you join before or while this battle is taking place, you will be required to attend. Your family must be from Calydon, and they must currently govern some piece of land in the Calydonian homeland. This applies even if you govern a Satrapy. This is so the storyline doesn't end up breaking apart to become a bunch of people jacking off in their own corners while ignoring each other.

-2: Dynasty based RPing. You do no RP a nation per se, nor do you RP an individual or a ragged band of unconnected people. You will be given control of one of the Calydonian families. This will include their retainers, advisers, and subjects as you wish to introduce them. You can play a small dynasty with very little land, or you can play a larger one with possession of up to one satrapy (kingdom subject to imperial rule).

-3: A fantasy world based on Classical Antiquity. This does not mean you will be limited to what was historically true, of course. We are not merely mimicking the real world. Magic will be limited to a level that could be construed as merely mysticism or ignorance insomuch as it will be made to look plausible. You will be allowed to invent your own plants and animals so long as they make sense within this world's eco-system (IE: No dragons or T-rexes. Nothing that would not possibly be able to eat enough to sustain itself, basically).

-4: Late Bronze-age, Early Iron-age technology. Steel will be a mystery from far beyond the borders of the Calydonian world. It will be a rarity. Most metal-working will be done with bronze, copper, or crude iron.

-5: Character Centered, Third-person Perspective (ideally limited). We aren't looking for chessboard RPing where you simply say where things are and what they are doing (IE: "The Broian Army is moving south with five hundred spears and six hundred cat-tossers. The city is producing lots of copper wiring due to an industrial level of homeless crackheads living in the area"). We also don't want to see first person, as first person tends to get confusing in an RP setting. Everybody is I and suddenly you forget who's I's are who's. Limited perspective is what you should strive for, but understandably that isn't always easy so it isn't necessarily a requirement.

-6: Long posts will be common. Don't get too intimidated. So long as you mean reasonable level of literacy, you should be good. A paragraph or two is acceptable. Don't be surprised if some of us are pumping out 2k+ word posts, however. It sorta happens like that.



APPLICATIONS


You'll notice i'm not into big apps. Don't worry too much about what happens in them. It's mostly to make sure you are capable of stringing together sentences and coming up with an idea that is both coherent and fits in this world.

To understand how this works, here are explanations for each section.

Family name: We are using an informal classical Greek/Roman naming convention. Yeh, i'm aware they are very different on a technical level. Just get something that sounds sort of like it fits in one of them and we will be good.

Banner: Describe the banner or flag that your family uses to distinguish themselves and their retainers from others.

Home City: This is where your people originate in native Calydon. It is, in essence, your homeland. This will be a city state that has belonged to your people for generations, and where many of your characters where probably born. If you want to play a smaller family, it can be a village or homestead. Again, Graeco-Roman naming convention.

Satrapy (if applicable): If your family is big enough, your can claim governorship of a Satrapy. This means your family has been handed control of a province in the new Calydonian Empire. Refer to This Map for a layout.

History: Self-explanatory. Most families should trace their histories back to a legendary family member who may have even given them their name. Aside from that detail, tie together what you can. We don't expect, or even really want, a history book.

The World



They said the flame that burned inside Syros could never be extinguished. Even the drowned spirits had failed to inundate the fire when he sailed the Straits of Calydon all those years ago. It was unimaginable that it would be the hoof of a horse that would put out the fire that burned in his heart. Some say he made the Creator jealous - that Deos himself feared Syros would overtake him as God. They say He envied him so strongly he killed every son Syros tried to conceive - all but one. It would seem as though Galos was born to be nothing more than false hope for Syros - a cruel trick. He lived to become an adult, but fell when a Rhumid arrow pierced his heart. Now Syros himself is dead, and without an heir.

Family Name: Milatids

Banner: A snake skeleton against a green field. Colloquially known as the "Bone Snake".

Home-City: Milatus

Satrapy (if applicable): Copsis (consisting of the land hugging the river on the northern continent.)

History: The Milatids trace their ancestory back to Milatides, a hero from the legendary age who founded the city and sired the dynasty that ruled it. Milatus is in the western highlands and away from the sea. Milatus is situated on a stony hill overlooking the surrounding valley, and it controls an inland road that connects the sparse western lands to the sea.

Cletus was the patriarch of the Milatids when Syros rose to power. Initially neutral, the Milatids joined Syros as soon as it was clear that he was going to come out the victor in the struggle that saw the country fighting itself. Cletus was loyal and followed Syros until the fight for the Copsid land in the pale north, where Cletus was slain. As a reward for their service, his family was given control of the Copsid lands. Cletus' brother Solon married Sephira, the daughter of the fallen God-King of the Copsid Empire, where they jointly ruled. Cletus' son Onesimos led the Milatid forces as they followed Syros in his campaigns. Having went blind in battle, Cletus' eldest son Tycho went home to govern the affairs of Milatus.

After the sudden death of Syros during the funerary games of his son Galos, Onesimos has taken the middle path in the following crisis. He has sent his son Hesiod to scout for the native warriors that slew the prince, and he has urged unity until a new king can be chosen.

I've claimed the Copsid Empire and Hugs has claimed Transepruxia during the process of making the RP. Those are the only places claimed thusfar, though I would note that Calydonia can't be taken as a whole. We will all start with small power bases there.

You can play as vassal Houses/families that are under the major family in whichever region. But it's the major family/player in the region that has final say on anything big. I think we're all willing to give people freedom to do whatever they want with their families, and really anything, but you'd probably have to ask the major player in the region before you decide there's a giant wall stretching across the entire province.

Home-City: Magesanitarus, named for the man believed to have created the family of Magesanitus. The city is sandwiched between the two bays in southern Calydon.

Satrapy (if applicable): The majority of Sepruxia

History: The Magesanitus is a particularly odd family, in that it is composed of both a Calydonian ruling class and a large range of Sepruxian wives and husbands. Throughout the Empire, the family of Magesanitus is known for both its reverance for nature and the particularly vicious ways its native half fought against Syros and his armies when they began a horrendously bloody campaign in Sepruxia. The people who live in Sepruxia, though they rarely ventured away from their homes, became a cause of much confusion for their impeccable fighting skill and the unexpected sumbmission they displayed when conquered by Syros. In particular, the notion that one should submit to a conqueror if the conqueror defeats them has proven to be heavily ingrained within Sepruxian society, and proved to be one reason that Syros was able to maintain control of the region without facing constant rebellion from a nation of warriors. As the Sepruxians and the Magesanitans in particular have an intense reverence for skill and tactics in and battle, they saw Syros's conquering of their people as something to be respected, which has led to an undying loyalty to their conqueror since their defeat.

Not only did Sepruxian warriors prove to be a particular thorn in the side of Syros, but the beasts which they fought alongside proved to be equally if not more deadly than the warriors that commanded them. Sepruxian wildlife does vary, though the most prominent species are either canid, caprinae, bovine, or equine in nature, such as Sepruxian wolves that the region's inhabitants often ride into battle, believed to be related to War Mastiffs), Sepruxian war-horses, or the Sepruxian Great-Goat (a large species of Caprinae that often serves to carry supplies or tow siege machines), and even simple bovines such as the domestic cow.

Although the Sepruxian ruling class was granted the privilege of marrying into the Magesanitan family that was given control of the region, due to the fact that they were still recently conquered, Calydonian men still preside over the large majority of the going-ons of the region and often make up the bulk of decision-making for their people. The Magesanitans, though, are highly valued for both their incredible fighting prowess and the astonishing sexual appeal and skill of their women. Magesanitan women are widely known for being particularly exotic (due to the oftentimes soft red colouring of their irises) and are widely prized as wives and as companions for Calydonian men. Since the death of Syros, though, the current lord of the Magesanitan family, Valentinus, and his Sepruxian wife, Zaharina, have remained largely neutral in the squabbles over Syros's Empire and have attempted to quell conflict as a result of his death. Lately, though, their beautiful daughter Aemilia has reached adulthood (and age appropriate for marriage in Sepruxian culture), a fact which Valentinus plans to use to strengthen his family's position through political marriage.

History: The Mithrids hail from the bureaucratic east of Calydonia. Mithreum is situated south of Heliocarsus, on the base of a mountain. Its fortress, and seat of the Mithrids, lies midway up the mountain and overlooks the rest of the city. It's built partly into the rocks, with waterfalls that bring fresh water in the form of small canals/aquaducts that pass through/under its walls. These canals are used to bring in drinking water, but also as a defense mechanism allowing defenders to divert the water so it rushes down the rocky inclines leading to the castle, if an army were to try to climb to it.

They trace their descent to the legendary hero Mithreus, who's feats were instrumental in the foundation of a united Calydonia in the Second Era. Since then, the Mithrids have upheld the rule of law as staunch supporters of the Kingdom, and later Syros' empire. Few Mithrids have ever dealt in politics, or striven to rule themselves. Instead, the Mithrids insured the stability of the realm through military force, becoming one of the most well-known military families, and earning the trust of even Syros when it came to military matters. A strict tradition of service to the state has yielded many excellent generals and soldiers loyal to the king/emperor.

Marcellus was the patriarch during Syros' rise to power. A good friend to Syros' father, Marcellus was among the first to rally behind Syros. He became one of Syros' most trusted and skilled generals early in the conquests, but was slain during one of the battles for what would later become Transepruxia. His son Marius finished what remained of the campaign there and was granted governorship of Transepruxia. He followed Syros but never reached the greatness of his father. He brought shame to the Mithrids when he retreated during a battle against the Qarima Empire, losing over half of his force in the process. His son, Cassian, never forgave him and lead a force to capture Marius so that he could be brought before Syros and be punished. Marius survived his retreat with serious injuries and was succumbing to infection when he chose to take his own life, rather than face Syros' wrath.

Cassian, the current patriarch, is a battle-hardened general and ultra-loyalist. He earned Syros' trust after proving himself more competent than his father through multiple campaigns, and the two had formed a bit of a friendship. Cassian supported the safeguarding of the empire, and strongly opposed any notion to break it up. He was among the first to mobilize his army when it was clear that civil war was inevitable. While some families work to make their provinces into kingdoms following the death of Syros, Cassian has made his intention to keep Transepruxia a part of the empire very clear.
