Off Topic is recovering I'll grant you guys that.

Though claiming it's a strictly worse and more vicious environment... That depends on who you ask.
For those who came to spam and were accepted it would defelently look that way.

But spam does have it's cliche's and popularity levels.
If you're not accepted or 'in' then most of the community doesn't really treat you that well right off the bat.
At least in Off Topic you're often give a few chances to make Intelligent and well thought out posts or arguments before (most) people choose where you stand.

If you like one or the other more is personal tastes, tomato, tomato, apples & oranges.
Both have flaws (some a bigger deal to certain individuals than to others), and both have their perks.

Spam hasn't really been like that for, idk, a year or so? The only people who really get harassed nowadays are the really annoyingly stupid people. Most new faces just stroll on in and have no issues. Ask idlehands how well or poorly she was treated when she first joined Spam, for instance.

Most of the people who were xenophobic idiots about the place either left or realized that they were being idiots quite a while ago. So long as people around running around spouting dumb shit that would get them a backhand elsewhere in the forum too, they do just fine in Spam.

I was treated fairly and welcomed, I think I played on easymode.

I actually lurked around for a few months before really posting. Spam, OT, and every other forum in the history of the internets have the same rules. Be cool, don't demand acceptance, and learn how the social dynamics work before plunging in and scream for attention. People will gradually become familiar with you and you won't be such an outsider, thus earning a foothold. Or show your tits, either way.

I do admit it has seemed to die down a lot.
Mostly as result of I've spent the past month decently active in it (minus the last week or so, shit's been happen irl) and haven't had most people here get annoyed with me and demand I leave yet.

Though I am hopeful and confident that Off Topic will recover and get back to how it used to be.
It was a fairly intelligent and respectful community for the most part from what I saw.

Though granted, that's probably because I signaled out those "I'm always right" kinds of people, and kept more open ears for when others like you, mdk, Brovo, Dark Leaf etc had stuff to say.

I dunno if you were/are ever in Spam during those times, so you probably think I'm nuts... but serious conversations here usually have a bit more substance because we know how to joke and have fun instead of having a "I'm better than you. My opinion is right. No exceptions" attitude, something that old OT had in back-stock.

Man, I'm a little surprised by that, but then again, I do remember things in Off-Topic Discussion getting heated really fast.

I don't think there's an "I'm better than you" attitude in OT or that there ever was; I believe the mindset has always been similar but significantly less malicious. I think it's always been just slightly pretentious; it's a hallmark of a pretentious person to have an expansive vocabulary and misuse it regularly. I find that often in OT, and as a pretentious person myself, I feel like a lesser authority on pretense.

The explanation is that RPG is full of precocious young folk (also like me) who are just discovering their voices and are looking to be heard in some significant capacity, and they go to OT. There's other kinds of people too, but that's because OT's community is much more loose than Spam's. You can walk in to OT, walk out, and no one will notice, but any fresh face in Spam attracts some kind of attention, good or bad, spoken or unspoken.
