A fleet of ships (one per player) leave Earth to travel to a world in another star system, via a wormhole (yes, I know it's sci-fi, but it's theoretically possible, and I needed a way to get us to another system) Earth found on the edge of the heliopause. Scientists can't understand why it is there, but understand it well enough to have sent several probes through it already. On the other side, they found another star system, much like the Solar system, but with a slightly redder star, and far more worlds. The only world with liquid water on it, however, is a ringworld, a planet tidally locked with the sun, one side always baking, the other always freezing. Around the border between the light and dark sides there is a canyon spanning the entire world, created by millions of years of ice blowing in from the cold side, thawing, then refreezing on the cold side or depositing sediment on the hot side before evaporating. It is the only place liquid water exists, and even then the vast majority of it is under the surface. Very few lifeforms exist there, mostly microscopic, but there are algaes, lichens, and a type of coral-like miniature lifeform.
The ships will land in this canyon, remarkably flat from the canyon-forming process. The colonists will construct a base underground in one of the many large naturally occurring caves in order to avoid the storms which frequent the surface, an average of twelve tornadoes or ice-hurricanes on the planet per day.
A space probe sent microscopic records back of every lifeform (took 5 months to get the signal), as well as chemical tests of a huge number of them for toxins, but found few toxins that could hurt humans (ex: a type of lichen that can survive much higher levels of arsenic than humans is fatal if eaten due to arsenic buildup in it). They haven't tested viruses or the like, but it's unlikely their micro-cellular life could effect humans or Earth life.
Spectroscopic analysis shows no refined metals, except on the hot side where it happens naturally. There is also no sign of artificial electronic activity, though if it was far underground it would be shielded from detection.
The trip is one way, due to fuel, though only LH2 is needed as fuel, so it can easily be made two way. Takeoff is done by heading north or south until you clear the canyon wall, then heading over the hot side to get the extra lift from the heat coming off of the ground. The 747-8f has 855 cubic meters of cargo space, so let's say ours has a bit less (as some will be taken by the reactor, crew space, etc.), say 825 cubic meters. They need two cockpit crew, though I'd guess a spacecraft would need at least 4, say a pilot, engineer, doctor, and another. The 747-8i can seat 605 passengers, so I doubt you can fill up on passengers. It took 17 months to get there, so any trip will probably be one way anyway.
We got lucky. Much of the life on this world, on the colder, light side of the canyon, converts co2 to o2, as do many endothermic lifeforms that live underground on the hot side. As such, the air is 15% oxygen, 1% CO2, and about 84% inert gasses, mostly nitrogen. It has a surface pressure of 58.2 kpa, so, a bit thin, and you need a CO2 filter, but we can adapt.

Also, it has a gravity of .83G.

The ships:
Roughly the size of a Boeing 747, but massing slightly more, they are powered by a 10GW, U-239 nuclear reactor. They have four 2.4GW nuclear turbo-jet/nuclear rocket hybrids and a 10GW mini magnetospheric plasma propulsion drive for interplanetary travel. With roughly 300 tonnes of cargo capacity, it was designed to haul cargo to and from the in-system colonies, but has been use to haul colonists as well.

The rules:
1) Any tech that isn't a reasonable improvement over current tech, or tech that hasn't at least been proof-of-concept proven has to be approved by me before it can be introduced.
2) No aliens unless they are pre-approved. I definitely don't want humanoid aliens, just aliens that are actually alien. Remember, they evolved under completely different circumstances. Being that walk on legs, have arm with hands, and heads may be accepted if they are suitably alien.

Everyone will have their own ship and will decide what cargo to haul on it, or crew/colonists to bring with them. People who aren't active can be placed in stasis, a medically induced coma in which heart rate and brain activity is greatly decreased, and in acceleration capsules, like they were in for transfer through the wormhole.
My ship will carry basic construction supplies(a pre-fab hanger for each ship, a bulldozer, concrete mixer, etc). We will (at least) need a farming vessel (more accurately, a hydro/aeroponics vessel), a mining vessel, and a manufacturing vessel. I can't launch the RP until we have those four ships.

Sure, there is the additional drive caused by competition, but those who can't excel make it harder for the ones that can, generally with laws, rather than competition, as they have numbers on their side."
History/Story: He grew up in a large city, seeing his parents always try to scrape by at a factory, or an office, or wherever they worked. He decided that that wasn't for him, so even as a child he pushed himself harder than any other child. When he graduated from high school as Valedictorian, he went to college on a scholarship, studying mineralogy, hoping to get a position on one of the colonist ships heading to Mars, where he would search for minerals. When it came down to recruiting people, however, he was overqualified for the position he wanted, and they didn't need another scientist of his caliber yet.
He got a job working for one of the under-water mineral survey corporations, analyzing the data of the probes to better guide them in their search. He worked there for several years until he learned of the colony program, sending a few ships of humans through the wormhole to colonize a new world, he signed up.

Like most people on Mars, his parents weren't very monogamous (a cultural trait of the Martians, as it diversifies the gene pool), and therefore never got married, but that didn't matter. He started living with his dad at the age of ten, which is when he discovered his love for machines. By the age of twelve, he was helping his dad fix ships, and by the age of sixteen he had officially joined the maintenance staff at the dock.
He worked on his education while trying to save up enough money to buy his own cargo ship, or at least be a partial owner of one. When he learned of the colonization efort on Earth, though, he spent his savings on treatments and rehabilitation to readjust his body to Earth-normal gravity. Once he was finished, he took a shuttle to Earth to join up.

There she made a name for herself finding cures for the outcome of the use of ever-more-clever biological, chemical, and radiological weapons. She, however, found it a bit boring, the only times she really pushed herself being the first 18-24 hours of a new pathogenic outbreak.
The colonization effort offered her something she couldn't find anywhere else, millions or billions of new, possibly hostile, lifeforms.

When she graduated, she designed buildings for the many growing cities and towns around the world. She never felt like she had a truly blank canvas, to produce her art with, so when the colonization effort started, she signed up, hoping that a new world would be a much more open medium for her art.

sounds interesting and i have started making my character sheet as for tech level i say it should be warhammer level (least when it comes to guns) meaning lazer weapons do exist but they do not see as much use as conventional weapons (IE: Guns)

ok. SO, we have particle beams, lasers, and plasma guns, but rail/gauss guns work better for battle? That works. The others would have their uses.

yeah basicly the laser, particle beams etc would be used mainly for outer space warfare and large scale planetary bombardments but as for ground warfare rail/gauss guns work much more effectivly

cool. I was planning on having three kinds of armor for vehicles/ships.
Nanotube is made by layering carbon nanotubes, like Kevlar. It is great against physical weapons, ok against energy. It is mostly made on Mars and Earth.
Ablative armor is made out of a titanium-aluminum alloy. It is good against energy, ok against physical. It is mostly made on the moon (the moon has large amounts of both titanium and aluminum).
Hybrid is layers of nanotubes held together by the titanium-aluminum alloy. It is good against everything, but isn't as good as nanotube armor against physical, and isn't as good as Ablative against energy.

Also, what purpose will your ship serve? Farming can just be added to one of the other ships (probably mining), as hydroponics tanks, nutrients, and cafeteria supplies don't weigh that much. We need mining and manufacturing, though.

The only real plot is that we need to get the world setup for colonists. We won't get any until we are ready, though, as we will have to tell them to come (though there may be some refugees at some point.) I designed my ship as a kind of cargo-hauling space-plane, but you can design your own if you want. Just remember that it can't take off/land from a planet unless it generates more than that planet's gravity worth of thrust. My ship takes all the reactor can put out to launch from Earth with a full load.
Antagonists will really depend on if you need them. In the interest check there is a guy that wants to be a military team, so he's going to have to have pirates follow if he wants to have someone to fight. There aren't any higher-order animals small proto-fish and mollusks at most, or worms.

welcome aboard. I might be able to lose some weight now, as I have a library computer, consoles (large tablets) and fiber cable for communications, as well as a comms relay (satellite dish for broadcasting to the orbital satellites. I was also trying to figure out how to carry satellites with me.
What kind of generators will you have? The generator I'm carrying produces 1gw of power, more than enough to run computers and comms at the base, as well as our mining and manufacturing stuff, at least for a while.

Sure. My people are wearing nanotube mesh space suits (for radiation blocking and because it would be a lightweight, durable material), though the Captain will have a hardened, thicker form of it for spelunking. Also, I'll give each person on my ship a gun too. They will be carrying ion stunners (basically shoots a stream of ions at you, effects like a taser on humans, trips circuit breakers or burns out electronics), and when we see a threat, I'll have someone build them Gauss pistols and armor.

Here's my ship design. I plan for it to stay in geosynchronous orbit above the planet acting as a communications satellite and refueling station. If there's anything I should change or doesn't fit let me know.

Name: Ferris
Number of crew: 8 (space for 20 other personnel.)
Role of ship: Power generation/Supply, refueling, Communications.

2xSSTO shuttles: 60 tonnes
Water:50 tonnes
Food/Supplies: 5 tonnes
Description: It was assembled in orbit around Luna due to it's large size and mass. During travel the ship resembles a long cylinder with a hemisphere at the front and it's ion propulsion system at the rear. The ship can be deployed by extending an outer shell of habitation and other modules via long structural cables. These modules are rotated about the core in order to simulate gravity. The deployed ship has a rotational diameter of 224m and spins at 2rpm giving a gravitional force of just under 1g on the floor of the habitation modules. The modules are connected to one another via flexible airtight corridors. However they are structurally weak and so are joined by air locks in case of failure.
The central core houses the ship's 4 plutonium reactors, the main cargo hold and other core systems. Power, air and coolant is transferred to the habitation modules through the ducts within the structural cables.
The habitation modules contain small hydroponic facilities to bolster food supplies to the crew. Alongside this their are bedding arrangements for up to 28 personnel; a medical bay and recreational facilities including a bar, gym and lounge. The ship is designed to support 8 crew indefinitely and 28 for up to 20 years.
There are several other modules that act to carry out the ship's objectives. A fully equipped electronic warfare suite and communications hub is present and broadcasts to the surface and throughout the solar system. Also present is a suite of 3D printers, which can be used for maintenance and replacing parts, and a refueling module which can service other spacecraft and the ships contingent of SSTO shuttles.
The 2 SSTO shuttles have a small cargo payload and are primarily used to shuttle supplies and personnel to and from the surface.
Defensively the ship is equipped with a missile battery and has a small supply of weapons on board. Offensively the ship has a battery of 3 tungsten rods. However the launch codes are not known by the crew or stored on the ship. Only commands from high up in the Terran government can unlock their use.

Cadet: I like the ship. With ion engines you would need to keep the crew alive for years, so it's cool that you did that. It's kind of a portable space station.
Stitchblades: a 1 billion terrabyte harddrive? That will come in handy when I'm trying to render an entire capital ship down to the smallest component. Who needs compression?
