As always, Chris and Tony remained close to one another as they walked. Not long into the resumed journey, Tony's legs began to ache again. Days of running with only short breaks... he didn't want to imagine what would happen if he collapsed. So he marched through it, smiling all the way to the treeline because that's what his best friend would expect. He wasn't the best liar, but he knew exactly how to fool her.

Watching the density of the trees decrease before them, and the abandoned shacks and cars begin to appear around a dirt road, relief sprang up like a cat at feeding time with its ears pricked. For the briefest moment Tony felt better, before reality struck him in the gut. He couldn't remember when he stopped smiling, but worry painted itself across his features now.

“Infected are most likely around here somewhere.”

When their new companion dropped down on the outskirts of the small town, Chris pulled the rifle over her shoulder back into her hands. She looked down the sights in every direction, motioned for her companions to follow, then walked slowly into the town. If there were infected to be dealt with, she would make sure they met a swift end.

She made her way through the town from its main road, passing rows and rows of empty housing before catching sight of the first store. Still, it was a quarter mile away, its colourful sign like a beacon. Chris slowed and trained her rifle on every conceivable exit and entrance, then glanced back at Tony and Joshua and indicated down the road to the store. Predictably, Tony responded with an enthusiastic nod.

Tamashii

Tamashii touched Mercy’s arm, smiling reassuringly at her. “We’ll be back soon. Stay safe” Tamashii murmured to Mercy. Turning back to face the vest guy as he handed the little girl a knife, she waited patiently for him to turn back to her and announce he was ready. “Right, let’s get this over with then” Tamashii murmured, looking down the street she jogged over to a house on the opposite side of the road sliding in close to a building on the other side. “Stay close, keep an eye out. We can sneak past a few but can’t risk boxing ourselves in” Tamashii murmured, moving along the wall playing with the blade in her hand. “I’m Ash, by the way” She added as she crouched at the edge of the house, peeking around the corner her eyes scanned the street sucking in a breath as after a few moments of watching she depicted there was movement...everywhere.

The slow movers were stumbling out of their holes slowly, appearing from between houses and under porchs. She even saw a few inside the houses bashing against the inside of the windows. She looked down the alley to her right, lifting her hand her index and middle fingers extended together, she twitched the tips of her fingers forward signalling for the man in the vest to follow her as she rounded the corner, running low and fast as she redirected down the alley stepping lightly over a few broken lengths of fence on her way.
She pushed herself close to the wall, inhaling sharply as a groaning mass of rotted flesh swung around the corner flailing its arms at her, she thrust her blade into the things eye socket pulling it back as the body crumpled to the ground. She wiped the blade clean on her jeans stepping over the body she rounded the corner quickly, stopping as she saw 3 more slow movers moving towards a yellow house with a white trim. She backtracked around the house, probably stepping back into the vest guy if he had followed her. “I count 3 down here...what do you want to do?” She asked the guy in a hushed whisper having turned so her back was to the house and she was side on to him and the slow movers. She held her knife defensively in front of her, looking at the vest guy impatiently. “The shots must have been fired nearby, they’re moving into the street out front”

Mercy

Mercy nodded at Tamashii. “You too” She smiled reassuringly at Tamashii, before looking back to watch the guy in the bulletproof vest hand the young girl a large blade. She then watched the pair move off towards the houses on the other side of the road, she glanced over her shoulder at the red head, she crouched down watching until Tamashii and vest guy were out of her sights. “Can you keep an eye out behind us? I’ll watch the street...I can take them down at a distance” Mercy asked the red head. Her blue eyes scanning the street in front of them, so far no movement... “You never told me your name by the way” Mercy stated to the red head. “Fancy sharing it now?” She asked, relaxing her grip on her bow string for a moment allowing it to become slack. She looked down at her arm, noting the state of the bandage wrapped around her left bicep the bandage was barely visible because of the thick layer of dirt that had darkened its colour it pretty much matched her filthy skin, she needed to change it soon...

Time passed and there was no sign of Tamashii or the man in the vest, Mercy was growing restless she was pacing in front of the alley down the side of the house, more and more of those things were swarming towards this area she looked up at the tree line for the umpteenth time. However this time she froze in horror at the sight before her, it looked like the trees were moving...but trees didn’t move...she bit back a whimper as she watched the wretched forms of slow moving figures breach the tree line, stumbling towards the town. “We have to move” Mercy whispered to the girl urgently, looking to the large blockade in the road, she imagined thousands more of those things were hiding behind it trying to clamber over it. “We stick this side, move fast and quietly...keep an eye out for the others and stay close to one another,‘ kay?” She murmured her voice shook slightly as adrenaline flooded into her system, she clutched her bow tightly looking one last time in the direction Tamashii had gone Please be ok before she turned and ran down the alleyway between the two houses, she cautiously rounded the corner pulling her bow string back she carefully positioned her arm releasing an arrow with expert precision so the string wouldn’t catch her arm. The arrow whirled through the air piercing the skull of an unsuspecting risen.

Mercy reached over her shoulder pulling out a second arrow her eyes focusing on a building across the gardens, it had a thick red line around its roof and colorful letters on the side, she couldn’t read it from here. It looked different from the other houses; she would have guessed it a store of some kind. “We need to get over there...Ash will head there when she realizes she can’t come back this way. Please come with me!” Mercy called back to the red head, she tried to keep her voice as low as possible but to no avail. She knocked another arrow firing it at another slow moving risen, before she jogged forward approaching both crumpled corpses ignoring their foul smell she gripped one of her arrows pulling it back sharply, it sprung free from the dead flesh with a sickening squelch and a small burst of dirty blood and sinew. Mercy grimaced and wiped the arrow on the creatures torn clothes, repeating the process with the other arrow looking back over her shoulder briefly to see whether the young girl was following her, she hoped she would...she didn’t want to leave her but she knew staying wasn’t an option. We have to get to that building... If the young girl did decide to follow her she pointed in the direction of the colorful building indicating where she was on about before beckoning her over once the coast was clear. From what Mercy could see the fencing between them and the store wasn’t looking so good a lot of it had either fallen down or had large panels missing, they could probably get through it really quickly...maybe without hassle from those things...

John knew that he had to get out of the house and soon. His companion and him pushed furniture near the stairways for when the dead would attempt to over run the upstairs.

It was hard to be quiet as those things thrashed, bumped and flailed to get inside the window and doors to the house. "Open up the windows, we can crawl out of them, then jump down and run" The woman spoke. "Ok, you get the windows and I'll get ready for those things".

Minutes later both John and the woman were on the roof looking for a escape route. They both began to scan the area for a place to hide.

-Remi-

"Yeah, three dead..." Remi narrowed his eyes, gripped his baseball bat and looked down the street at the shambling creatures. He knew that they could run in and probably take them out in no time, but what if more showed up? What about the people who were shooting? Where were they in all this chaos? He looked over at his companion and shook his head. "We need to make sure those three are alone. We can't afford a surprise." It was agonizingly slow the time they spent watching the three creatures; no others joined them and it seemed they were for sure alone.

"I'm worried about the shooter. The owner of the gun could be worse than three slow walkers." He nodded toward the undead and then sighed. "I'll take the one on the far right, you take the one further left and we'll meet in the middle on the third guy."

Just as they were about to silently sneak up on the infected, a man wearing what looked like a bathrobe stumbled out of one of the houses nearby; his eyes were wide and he looked crazed. He was holding a gun in his left hand. Their shooter.

"Ash, he's getting ready to turn," Remi whispered, all color draining from his face. "Ah, yes..." The gun in the man's hands fell to the ground, making a sound loud enough to get the other undead's attention. "We've got trouble. Change of plan." Remi reached into his pocket and pulled out a long, slender throwing knife. He weighed it in his hands and took a step toward the man who was still in the process of turning.

"Sorry," he said, throwing the knife, lodging it between his eyes. The other three were now almost on them.
-Olivia-

Olivia followed behind Mercy, dodging and moving out of the way when an undead came after her. The lady was good with taking care of most of them and it looked like they would make it to safety. When they actually did, she let out a long breath that she had not known she was holding.

"How long do you think we will be safe?" Olivia whispered. "I hope the others come back okay." She did not know the other two people, but it was always nice being part of a bigger group. She could pretend they were family, at least for a little while. The redhead sighed, looking out the window of the place they were in. The road looked clear and it was eerily quiet.

Tamashii

Tamashi glanced over her shoulder at the man in the vest, seeing him shake his head she frowned at him, rolling the knife in her hand as she listened to his words knowing he was right she suppressed a growl of irritation and forced herself to remain where she was. Patience was not her forte, she kept her eyes peeled for other animated corpses turning so her back was to the light haired guys shoulder that way she could watch behind them as well as in front of them, before long she couldn’t take it anymore...she needed to get back to Mercy as soon as possible. “Screw this nothing else is coming” She grumbled at the guy turning to face the three things in front of them she listened as he spoke of the mysterious shooter. “You have a point...but we can’t stay here and wait for much longer, who knows how many more of those things will be attracted here because of that noise” She pointed out, before she quietened down listening to his plan of action she simply nodded her head moving to his other side and focusing her eyes on the shambling corpse on the left hand side, she had barely taken a step forward when a man in a bathrobe stumbled out of one of the doors ahead of them, she felt her breath hitch painfully in her throat as he stared them with wide eyes and a crazed expression, when she noticed the gun in his hand she instantly dropped her free hand to her waist resting it on the handle of her handgun pulling the weapon slowly from its holster careful not to alarm the man.

She heard the vest guy whisper her name and state his purpose, her hazel brown eyes were focused on the man she could see what he was doing, she flinched as the gun fell through the mans hands, her stomach dropped as the sound drew the attention of the 3 corpses, 3 pairs of cloudy white and yellow eyes seemed to focus on them. “Damn it” Tamashii hissed under her breath, dropping the handgun back into her holster, she turned a little towards the vest guy watching him test the weight of the slender throwing knife before he stepped forward and expertly sent it hurtling towards the gunman, she had little time to admire his finesse however as the three shambling creatures were practically upon them in mere seconds. She turned sideways pulling her foot back before slamming it into one of the creatures chest with enough force to make it stumble back, just as another came up on her left side its hands clawing at her, she batted its arms away from her slamming her body into its side and pushing it against the house as she brought her knife up, thrusting it through the creature’s skull with minor resistance from its soft flesh, she wrinkled her nose as she tugged the blade free with a quick jerk, gore clung to the sleek metal and dirty blood spurted out onto her filthy shirt, she was barely able to turn before another undead creature was upon her, she ducked away from its clawing fingers, dropping to the floor she spun her leg round sweeping the creatures legs out from underneath it, the sickening crack that resounded through the air caused her stomach to twist in disgust as it collapsed to the floor, still trying to reach her, she pulled her arm up positing the blade above the corpses head as it lurched at her rotting teeth bared she buried her blade into its eye socket, twisting the weapon for good measure before withdrawing it.

She glanced up at the vest guy hoping he had handled the other creature without ill effect. “Screw this...he doesn’t look like he has anything we can use” Tamashii panted to the guy in the vest, getting to her feet unsteadily she walked over to the downed gunman showing no remorse for his misfortune she swooped down and picked up the gun lying beside him, opening the magazine she counted 2 unused bullets, it was better than nothing “Here there is at least two shots left should we need them” She told her companion, holding the gun out towards him before reaching for the throwing knife jerking it free of the man’s forehead she also handed that back to him. “We can either search his house or we head back and get the other two...this way looks fairly clear to me, could be a fast way through this town” She stated giving him the choice, she owed him that much...if he hadn’t been with her, she clicked her tongue in irritation pushing the thought away.

Mercy

Mercy had pulled her bow across her back returning her arrows to her quiver she had armed herself with the rusty hammer Tamashii had given to her earlier. She tried to keep her hands steady though she was trembling as she led the young redhead through the gardens, carefully negotiating the tedious obstacles before them. They had almost reached the building when the first risen pounced at them arms flailing at the redhead who was fast and dodged out of its way, with her heart in her throat Mercy had swung the hammer at the creature catching it in the back of the head which instantly caved in under the force of the flow and sent it to the floor in a crumpled heap beside them. Mercy’s breath left her body in a rattling exhale as she stared at the body for a few moments making sure it wasn’t going to get back up, her heart was racing within her chest spreading a fresh wave of adrenaline through her system as they continued on.

Once they reached the building Mercy signaled for the girl to stand to the side as she held the hammer at the ready and moved towards what she could only assume was the door to the back room of the convenience store, taking a deep breath she reached for the handle, she couldn’t hide her surprise as the door clicked open without any resistance. She signaled for the redhead to stand in the doorway hoping the girl would think to watch the outside for any corpses that may appear, once the young girl was stood behind her she slowly walked into the room, it was a small stuffy office with a desk tucked into the corner and filing cabinets scattered along the walls, the mahogany desk looked as if it had been swiped clear of clutter judging by the scattered paper that was spread across the floor around it along with a broken lamp and various other pieces of stationary the two far walls were covered in blinds leading her to believe they were in fact windows probably facing out into the small store there was another window to her right which she was sure looked out onto the road, directly across from her was a closed door which with any luck would lead out into the store. Mercy’s eyes flickered around the room looking intently for any signs of movement, seeing none she stepped out into the room spinning on the spot to check the only hidden place left behind the door, she exhaled in relief when she found nothing behind it but a china plaque that held keys.

She motioned for the young redhead to enter the room, quickly and silently closing the door behind her, she turned back to face the redhead as she spoke. She felt fear worm its way into her mind, though she refused to show her feelings she smiled reassuringly at the young red head. “Hopefully for a while, this place doesn’t look like it’s been damaged to badly” She commented, looking back at the door a part of her wanted to put the desk in front of it just in case but another part of her didn’t want to close off their only exit without knowing what was behind the other door first. She dropped her gaze to the floor as she processed the girl’s other whispered comment. “You and I both” She murmured in reply, concern mixing with her fear as she cast her thoughts to Tamashii and the vest guy she had gone with. She wouldn’t know what to do if anything happened to her companion...She was pulled from her thoughts as she heard the youngster sigh, looking over at her Mercy realized she had moved over to the window and was peeking out of it. “I’m going to look out the front, you can stay here if you want where its safe or you can come with me...just remember to stay close” Mercy announced in a quiet voice moving over to the door that lead to the front of the store, readying her gore splattered hammer she pushed the door open and carefully but surely moved into the store front keeping close to the towering displays as she moved quietly through the aisles, there were literally only a few.

With the sounds of the undead growing steadily louder, Chris and Tony skirted around the buildings on the street. They avoided the main road, walking through that would make them a glowing, neon painted target with flashing lights and an arrow sign. No, they sifted through the houses on the side of the road. Chris led the approach to the general store, with its colourful signage, her eye trained down the sights of her rifle. For his part, Tony sneaked along behind her, crowbar at his side. The sounds of the shuffling, grunting undead seemed to be coming from the edges of town, with the few odd moans within the nearer vicinity.

Halfway to the store, between a house and a run-down barber's, a walker shuffled out of the brush towards them. What might have been a scream died in Tony's throat as Chris slammed the butt of her rifle into the walker's temple. She released the baton and struck it over the head repeatedly, twisting to avoid the spray of rotting blood.

Tony stepped way back. He hated to watch these encounters; hated looking at the former human being, for fear he might get an idea of who they used to be, who their families were. Seeing Chris attack them was just as horrible. He didn't know if it was rage, protective instinct or pain he saw in her eyes when she struck the walker over, and over, and over again until it stopped moving.

She dropped the baton, then, and slowly turned to Tony for inspection. It was their ritualistic habit – Chris dispatched the undead, then Tony made sure she hadn't injured herself or ingested blood. He checked her for cuts first – all clean there – then glanced into her mouth, ears, eyes, anywhere she could have been splattered.

“You're okay,” he whispered, not ashamed of the relief that slipped into his voice.

Chris nodded, though it wasn't as stern as usual. She was relieved, too, he thought. She wiped the baton on her combats, collapsed it and stuck it back in her belt loop. They continued as before, the rest of the way to the store. Pressing their backs against the glass store front, they checked every angle, ever conscious of the increasing volume of the undead. Chris glanced in through the window and froze.

“There's something in there,” she muttered to Tony, who seized up at the notice. Chris spoke quickly in hushed tones. “Stay by the door, keep watch. If you see something, come get me. Don't be afraid to kill them.” Then, she opened the door just enough for her to slip through, refusing to let the bell above the door announce her arrival, and weaved through the stacks towards the figure.

-Olivia-

"No, I want to follow you." She looked down at her scuffed up tennis shoes and sighed. Her fingers gripped tightly around her handgun. She was young, so it was natural for people to treat her as a child; she was a child. Olivia just wished they did not think she was incapable of surviving. It was true that the undead had the upper hand. They were bigger for the most part, weighed more and vicious. Here she was, a 95 pound, farmers daughter. Olivia did know how to use guns; she had that at least. Before all this happened, her father had been teaching her everything there was to know about living off the land, how to hunt, how to drive a tractor and even how to drive their little beat up car. "Someone should be your lookout. You go first since you have the melee and I'll let you know if anything is coming from behind or from the sides." She bit down on her lower lip.

"I know I'm small, but I've made it so far. Don't think of me as just a kid." She looked around the backroom they were in and tried to find something that could be handy as a weapon and not as loud as a gun. There wasn't much; it was just a typical backroom for a small store. She hoped the store had stuff that would be useful for them.

Finally, her eyes landed on a broom. It wasn't much, but would do in a pinch. She picked it up, weighing it in her hands. It had some weight to it and despite being small, she was strong since she helped her father on the farm. Olivia tucked her gun into her jeans and then unscrewed the brush from the broom stick. She gave it a few practice jabs and nodded to the other girl. "I'm ready."

Suddenly, a light bulb went off in her head. "I'm so sorry. I forget to tell you my name." She blushed. "I'm Olivia."

They quietly started to venture into the main part of the store. She was surprised to see some lights flickering. They were not very bright though and she realized they were emergency back up lights for when the electricity went out. Olivia wondered how long they would last. The area seemed clear, but the smell inside told her otherwise. She wrinkled her nose up in disgust. The dead were inside. Several if the smell was any clue.

"Look," Olivia whispered as quietly as possible. There was what looked like a young child sitting on the floor in front of a display shelf. It's eyes were wide open, but had no spark to them. It's head lulled about and it's tongue, what was left of it anyway, was hanging out of it's mouth. The child looked like he or she had been a little younger than Olivia.

"It's a lurker. Have you seen those type before?" You could get as close as a foot away from one and it would not react. Only when you were close enough to touch it would it lazily try to grab you, but with lacking effort, as if it were bored with unlife and did not really care to eat. It was easy to tell a lurker from the rest. Their skin usually decayed a lot faster than the others, taking on a mostly rotten look and sometimes, they were one step away from being classified as a walking skeleton. The normal undead were slow and it was usually easy to dodge and walk between them if there were not many around. Then there was the fast ones. They were the most rare and the the most dangerous.

Olivia had only ever seen one before. She shuddered at the memory.

"Wait," Olivia warned her companion. "I think I hear something behind us. Don't go any further inside." It would be the worst thing to get trapped with undead in front and behind them.
-Remy-

"Wow," Remy said, a soft whistle leaving his lips. "Thank you." He turned to Ash, wiping his hands on his jeans. "That was too close for comfort. That gunman almost made things fatal." He took the offered handgun and knife back from her, pocketing the gun, but keeping the throwing knife and his large knife out for melee purposes, just in case they got into another jam. "Well, I suppose this man answered our question." He looked down at him. "He must be the one who fired the shots." He tutted and shook his head. "Not even out of his bathrobe. Was he living in his own little world, not realizing this one had gone to Hell?" Remy bent down, inspecting him to see if he had anything else that would be useful.

"He really is only wearing a bathrobe. No clothes, nothing. Not to mention, his skin is damp." Puzzled, he looked toward the man's house, or the place he assumed belonged to the man. Had he really been having a bath? Sure, bathing was a treat and when the opportunity presented itself, Remy did not pass it up, but he usually only took one if there was lookout. Poor guy.

"Do you want to keep looking around or head back toward the others? Should we check in his house?" It did not seem this man would have much they needed, though maybe some food. "I guess a quick peek wouldn't hurt. Can you keep watch?" For some reason, he had an ounce of trust for Ash; maybe because she watched his back and hadn't let him 'accidentally' get bitten so she could steal his stuff. He had had people try and do that to him before. It never ended pretty.

Remy walked into the living room, checking carefully for any more undead. It was clear and he managed to make it to the kitchen. He opened the fridge and cabinets and took everything that would be useful and could fit into his camping backpack. He was thankful for his academy training. They trained him how to do combat while carrying around a lot of weight. He never thought he'd put that training to use.

He returned to the front door and nodded at Ash. "There wasn't much in there, but I grabbed some food. I'll ration it between the four of us when we meet up. Also, I realize I neglected to tell you my name. It's Jeremy, but I just go by Remy." He gripped the handle of his long knife and looked around them.

"Let's go."

Unknown to john and Maria, his female companion their were the other survivors close by and the two groups didn't even realize how close they were.

John and maria were about to jump down from the two story roof when Maria spied a male figure going into a nearby house while a female waited outside. " John, john, Look!" Maria was pointed excitedly as she grabbed his arm " Survivors". " Don't yell or we will all be in trouble, have you forgotten with things lurk below?" Hissed john as he squinted his eyes at her. " You didn't see them.." Maria commented " I'm not trying to get into a argument but--" John just stopped talking " Okay... let's go over and meet them" Maria smiled back at him and mouthed a thank you. John smiled back and realized that she really just wanted someone else to talk to beside him and that was fair.

John and maria jumped down from the roof while quickly evading the dead, then they made a slight back track to break line of sight from the dead to come behind the female that should hopefully still be outside the house where the man went into.

John took point as the usual with rifle in hand the two made haste to meet up with the other survivors. Both John and Maria hadn't seen anyone else alive so this was exciting but dangerous. Not everyone is crazy, asshole that wants to eat your flesh or have sex with you because your the last female. But then again you don't know what everyone is thinking either. They could be looking at you the same way and them both parties are looking at the other kinda messed up , then one side doesn't like the way that the other side was looking at them.

You get the point, Humans are warlike and barbaric in natural as histories have told us time and time again. This would be any different John told himself as as he was trying to formulate a plan to safely contact these other people.

**Close by a dog barked**

as our two heros started to come around the corner of the house, john and maria were able to use the cover of the building of the same house. They were about to approach the female that was waiting, she looked nervous and was alert to her surrounding as john and maria whispered to each other about "how to make contact with other people". Maria just wanted to jump out and say "Hi, With are survivors" but John didn't like that plan. Before the two could come to an agreement they both heard the man exiting out the house, the wooden floors creaked as he began to walk out to the front. The man that come out was carrying a duffle bag and a shotgun while wearing a police bullet-proof vest. He then spoke to the female.

"There wasn't much in there, but I grabbed some food. I'll ration it between the four of us when we meet up. Also, I realize I neglected to tell you my name. It's Jeremy, but I just go by Remy." He gripped the handle of his long knife and looked around them.

John and Maria instinctively ducked down even thou they were less than eight feet away. John held Maria still in the bushes watching and listening.

"Let's go." Remy said and the two walked off.

"Way didn't you say something?!, He was right there" Maria exclaimed to john. " Because he was wearing a vest and it says "Police" but we are miles away from the city, this area is under the Sheriff's Department". John explained. " So you think that he isn't a Cop?" Maria asked. " I...I don't know. Maybe...maybe not" John shrugged his shoulders.

"Your wearing a vest so does that make you a bad guy?" Maria smirked
" Depends.... "
" Depends on what?" Maria asked.
" Who is hold the gun" John frowned

" Fine, throw a rock to get their attention and talk to them from right here, I'll be running around the back to flank them if something goes bad. So wait for a signal and sit on the porch and don't move!".

" Okay, okay...." Maria frowned as John went to do his secret spy stuff to say "hello".

** moments later **

a rock flew over head and landed in front of the two that were traveling away from the house. The rock roll in the same direction as they were walking... meaning that it had to come from behind and unless the dead were fighting back with rocks. The two knew it was a live person as they turned to see a hispanic woman sitting on the porch that they just left. Then the woman waved and smiled at them from a distance.

John waited in the darkened room with his line of sight on Maria....waiting for the two to return. He stayed out of sight and would let the two pass into his field of fire as their back would be exposed to john as they would have to pass into view. John was a former soldier and this wouldn't be the first time setting up and ambush, making sure that he would have tactical advantage but he was worried about the two other ones. Somewhere that man and woman had two more "friends".

Kaylah: “I hope we find some company soon girl. I love you to bits but you don’t talk though I know your barks very well.”

The young woman walked slowly, she had a backpack on to keep what she needed, only two bottles of water could be seen, everything else was hidden within the black bag itself. Her furry friend walked in front of her, since it was the type that watched and guarded it was normal and besides she always did that. Though this Rottweiler was only 3 it was bigger than the average one and so it was very intimidating but it was a gentle if you had good intentions. Her semi-wet noise sniffed the air for any possible threats; Kaylah relied on her furry friend to keep her out of trouble, her constant fear of injury and being left alone was always present at the edge of her mind. Just like that her pet went mad as it saw two undead corpses make their way to her, one was slow the other slightly faster.

Kaylah: “OK, OK Bruiser. Calm down, stay behind so you don’t get infected…….. OK Kaylah you can do this, you have a ranged weapon so you won’t get hurt. My weapon is only dull and fatigued after the last few encounters, oh god. (Heavy and rapid breathing). Your only friend is safely behind you so just kill them already.”

She was talking to herself but her nerves were playing on her, this happened with each encounter. Her heart rate went up and her mind went blank as the other hostile zombies came at her. Her pet bared its teeth behind Kaylah hoping to scare them but they were brain dead so it did nothing. One zombie was a hoodie and the other wore a green t-shirt which had a logo on. Both were wearing jeans but one was the standard blue and the other was a black pair. Both also had bloody faces and bloody clothing from where they were either bitten or where blood had been added during one of their bite fests. She was about to attack when she heard some gun shots that were not too far away from them. It had got the attention of the two corpses

Kaylah: “OK Kaylah, you can do this. They are turning away now (Breathing still heavy). One could strike to the head or to the neck. Beheading them should be easy enough.”

She soon took a few breaths before taking a swing with her blade mounted hockey stick. A horizontal attack was done; an attack that was aimed carefully and had as much force as she could give it due to the dull blade. She took the one with the green t-shirt on and as she connected the blade to the corpses neck it started to bleed all over the place, luckily missing her face but it hit her clothing which was barely there. The chances of getting any in her mouth were zero but getting it in her eyes were a possibility. Her pet Bruiser avoided it too. It felt very weird and it was very new to her as she felt the bone take most of the force but there was enough to go through it and remove the head of the undead. It had freaked her out and it had taken a lot out of her to do it but she did it.

The other started making its way towards the sound of the gun shots. This gave Kaylah and her pet a chance to move away from it which they did quickly. They went the other way where it was clear, the zombie not noticing them and even if it did it was slow. After a little stroll down the road which took about ten minutes because she was looking round they reached a store but was it empty?

“OK Bruiser, Go sniff it out for me but stay out of danger girl.”

Her dog barked before making its way to the store while Kaylah stood watch to see if anything else was coming.

Mercy

Mercy hesitated at the door as she waited for the redhead to respond, she was rather relieved when the young girl said she would come with her. Mercy wasn't very good at seeing danger, she often allowed herself to be lulled into a false sense of security even in these troubled times. "That would be great, two sets of eyes are always better than one" She smiled at the redhead, warmth clinging to her soft blue eyes she knew Ash would scorn her for it but she trusted the small girl...she saw no other choice in this situation anyway. She felt a pang of guilt at the girls words, her brow creased as she studied the redhead for a moment, she was a child though. Being a kid isn't really an option anymore She watched the redhead scan the room, probably searching for a weapon. "I'm sorry; I didn't mean to undermine you. From now on we can be in this together, I've got your back and you've got mine?" Mercy offered voicing her trust in the girl and offering to treat her as an equal, with equal responsibility. The woman’s words were true though she knew it would be a while before she would be able to completely suppress her protective nature. She waited patiently for the girl to prepare herself, pressing her ear against the door listening intently.

She glanced at the redhead as she spoke, noting the broomstick weapon she nodded in approval her mouth curving into a small smile as the young girl finally gave her a name. "It’s ok, given the circumstances I can forgive you" She jested, subconsciously expressing her nerves through humour for in reality she really didn’t want to open this door...she could deal with what was in this room she feared she couldn't deal with what lie ahead. Still with trembling hands she pushed the door open, her face crinkling in disgust at the rancid smell that met them as they slid through the opening. She was unable to crouch to close to the floor as they moved through the shop because of the bow slung across her back but she was careful enough to keep her head down. She hesitated as she heard Olivia whisper behind her, her eyes skimmed over the lurker laid across from them she felt her breath hitch in her throat as she looked at the creature it no longer looked human to her, she couldn't think of it as a human.

"Yes" She breathed almost inaudibly, her throat was painfully dry and her heart was beating so fast she was sure her companion could hear it. She had barely shuffled forward when the redhead’s voice cut into the silence a second time, warning her to wait she cast her gaze behind them before slowly lifting herself up just enough that she could peer over the top of the aisle they were hiding behind, her eyes focusing on the door at the store front, first she noticed a figure stood by the doorway secondly she realized it was ajar, her eyes quickly scanned the rest of the shop, apart from the lurker across from them she couldn’t see any movement, she ducked back down.

"There’s someone outside...” Mercy whispered to Olivia her voice little more than a soft hum. “I’m just going to check it out...it may be a human” Mercy stated to the redhead, her face a mixture of hope and dread as she contemplated her course of action, it turned out to be a simple one not giving herself a chance to stew on her decision she lurched out from behind the shelves straight into the path of another woman. Her breath hitched in her throat and she instantly raised her hands to defend herself thinking it to be the figure from the door, she held the hammer tightly ready to swing it should it not be a person but high enough she could block an incoming blow. Surprising people like this nowadays was a sure way to get a pipe to the head. "Wait!" She exclaimed barely keeping her voice down surprise apparent in her actions, as she flinched away from the woman.

Tamashii

Tamashii raised an eyebrow at him as he thanked her; she hadn’t even offered him the same courtesy. She looked down at the shooter as the brown haired guy spoke to her, studying his appearance for a moment before scanning their surroundings. “It was a good call...waiting” She mumbled to him in answer to his statements, a frown etched its way onto her face she was growing restless as he knelt down to check the man over, knowing she needed to be aware of everything was one thing but not having Mercy within her sights was slowly eating at away at her, the last time this had happened...Tamashii was pulled from her thoughts by her companion's observations. “Either that or he decided he didn’t want to live in this hell” She shrugged at him, folding her arms across her chest pressing her blade against her wrist as she glanced around them feeling uneasy at being so casually out in the open. “I can’t believe it; he literally must have just got out of the bath” She voiced what they were both thinking, a slightly envious hint to her words what she wouldn’t give to feel safe enough to take a bath...

She shook her head stepping back from the man and scanning the area around them for any signs of danger careful to keep her back turned towards the house, her hazel eyes were tense as she listened to his questions instantly she wanted to get back to Mercy, but it would be foolish to pass up the opportunity to check through this guys house as she opened her mouth to answer he near enough took the words right off of her tongue. She pursed her lips as he asked her to stand watch, studying him for a moment before she nodded her head curtly, moving towards the door of the house, making sure her back was to the building as her companion walked through the door, she felt uneasy about this though she had her eyes peeled for anymore of the undead, she was sure there were more drawing closer to them with each second. Her paranoia made her occasionally check the windows of the nearby houses as well, how could they be sure this guy was alone anyway? What am I doing out here? She dropped one of her hands to rest on the gun at her waist, she couldn’t shift her feeling of unease as she waited. “Hey, are you nearly done?” She called softly through the door, her hand twitching up in a reflexive motion as he appeared in the doorway. She exhaled and stepped back from the door allowing him through it, she listened to what he said unable to prevent another frown creasing her expression. Enough for the 4 of us? We’re a group now?

She reached up to her face pushing a strand of her fringe behind her ear. “Remy hmm? I suppose its faster to say then Vest guy” She acknowledged his name, her jaw was tight and her brow was creased it wasn’t easy to decipher whether she had meant that in a humorous manner or not. She cast her glance around them one last time before following after him as he moved away. “We should get back to the others” She kept her eyes peeled as she walked beside him. “Remy...” She murmured his name glancing at him without moving her head. “I feel like we’re being watched” She whispered to him, her hand had remained on the handle of her hand gun the whole time, her other hand gripping her trusty combat knife.

As the rock sailed past her head she jolted her hand up, her gun in her hand as she spun on the spot her gun already held in a ready position to shoot should she need to, her finger hovered over the trigger as her eyes zeroed in on the Hispanic woman. Her gaze remained hard as she watched the woman smile and wave, though expected her expression to change when she saw the brandished firearm. Tamashii’s other hand slipped the combat knife into her belt quickly before she lifted it to support her handgun, it was a curious predicament they found themselves in. Last time she had been pointing this gun at Remy...Mercy had convinced her to give him a chance, the other woman wasn’t here now. “Who the hell are you?” Tamashii growled, already angry with herself for allowing this person to sneak up on them. She cast Remy a very short glare, keeping him within her peripheral vision. How did he miss her? she didn’t like standing with her back towards open ground but this situation left her little choice, she kept her ears peeled for even the slightest sound behind her.

Shortly into her inspection of the store – the suffocating stench of death driving her to work quickly – Chris found a walker stood facing the corner of the room, apparently oblivious to her presence. Wrapping her fingers around the baton again, she stepped closer to deliver a fatal blow, before she heard a whispered voice. Chris forbade herself from losing sight of the walker, and listened.

“Look . . . It's a lurker. Have you seen those type before?”

Chris drew the police baton slowly out of her belt loop. As she listened to the kid talk, she was sure of two things; the girl wasn't alone, and there were more undead cramped into the store among them.

She had seen lurkers a few times before, and they seemed to stick in the places most suitable for shelter, as if they knew where survivors would come looking. Of course, they didn't, they weren't in the least bit smart enough for that. A lurker tried to grab her grandfather as they made to escape the city, and almost succeeded given that he was just an old, tired man. That was the first time Chris killed one of them... the first time she killed anything that didn't have eight legs. Even now, killing wasn't something she did readily, but in a short time it became habit, and instinct.

“Wait . . . I think I hear something behind us . . . Don't go any further inside.”

Once it was out of her belt, she lowered the baton until it straightened. She took another step closer to the looming walker in the corner, turned her body just so, and as the creature turned its sagging face to greet her, her baton collided with its head. Chris ducked forward and pulled it away from the corner before it could hit the wall; she didn't want to alert any more of the undead, nor the other survivors. Still gripping its upper arm, she hit it twice more. Then she eased it to the floor and shuffled around it.

The store wasn't terribly big and she was certain the other survivors would have heard something of her scuffle, so she stepped through the aisles towards the girl's voice. The woman turned into her aisle just as Chris was raising her baton to strike what she thought was another walker.

The woman couldn't have been more than a few years younger than Chris, and carried a hammer in similar fashion to the baton. If not for the woman's abrupt cry, Chris might have attacked on instinct. But while the cry did save the woman from immediate injury, it gave up their position to the multitude of walkers in the store. A chorus of grunts and moans, as though they were waking from a long sleep, erupted from all corners of the room.

“No time,” Chris muttered. She lowered the baton momentarily, in a sign of good faith to the other woman, and pointed it at the store front instead. “Front door. Go!” Slinging the rifle onto her shoulder, Chris jogged back the way she came, to the front of the store; to Tony.

Great, another person, Remy could not help but think when he and Ash turned around to see the oddly happy looking woman. He raised his eyebrow at her and looked over at his unlikely companion. She was obviously not pleased at all with the arrival of another person. He sighed as quietly as possible. It wasn't that he did not want to see more people; it was just meeting new people 9 times out of 10 never ended well. In a world like this nobody could ever be trusted and he understood that. It was really every man for himself when it came down to it. He hoped Ash did not think this girl was part of his group and that he had lied to her before.

"Who are you?" Remy repeated the question a little more civilly, rubbing his free hand warily through his brown hair. The woman did not look like someone who could handle herself alone in an undead infested world. This made the cop suspicious and he was sure that Ash had come to the same suspicion. He leaned close to Ash's ear and whispered. "I think we are being set up for an ambush." He had seen things like this more than once in his field of work and that was even before the outbreak. He may of been a rookie cop back then, but he had all the training. It was also the fact that this lady seemed so sure of herself and the creepy smile on her overly cheery face.

They were at this stand off for what seemed like forever. He looking at the lady, with Ash glaring beside him. What were they waiting for? What were they supposed to do anyway when it was obvious the Hispanic woman had at least one partner and he or she most likely had a gun aimed at their backs. In all the small country towns in the world, it figured this would be the one where he ran into so many other survivors. First the little girl, Ash and her friend and now this lady and her partner or partners. Remy sighed again, not liking the odds.

"For crying out loud, stop smiling and waving at us like were at some high school party," Remy finally said, getting impatient with the whole situation. "This is not the time or the place for such foolishness. Whoever is behind us might as well show themselves." He turned around and looked into the row of houses behind them. There was some movement and either it was more undead or the person hiding.

The sound of growling got his attention. "You've got to be kidding me," Remy murmured under his breath. He tapped Ash on the forearm. "There really is no time for this." He nodded down the street. It was a huge group of undead. It looked like the undead version of rush hour traffic. It had been so quiet before and the town was so small. Where had all these creatures appeared from? Did an undead convention just let out or something.

"Lady, man hiding in the house, if I were you, I'd run."

But before he could even think of running, several of the undead broke off from the group and were coming at him, Ash and the lady at an alarming speed. "Crap."
"Oh God," Olivia moaned. The undead were everywhere inside the store. Before, it had seemed like there might not be that many, but since the two woman had ran into each other, causing a bit of noise, the cries and snarls of the rotting creatures could be heard all over. She could see movement from behind one of the shelves.

Please don't be a fast one, please don't be a fast one, she prayed to whoever might still be listening. The thing that came into view had once been a young man. He was still mostly untouched and if not for the outstretched hands and the way his eyes looked, she would have thought he was a living, breathing human. Without even hesitating, Olivia thrust the handle of her broom upwards. Her aim had been a little two low because of the man being so much taller than she was. It was a stupid miscalculation.

Olivia tugged on the broom handle, the slurping sound of it coming out would give her nightmares if she ever manged to sleep again. This time when she stabbed with the handle, she hit true to home. She was surprised how well the broom handle worked out, though it was a bit of a pain pulling it back out and was not a very fast melee weapon. At least it was quiet.

She watched as the new person ran toward a door in the store, wondering what she was doing. Was she just going to leave them in the mess she helped create?

"Behind you," Olivia whispered, an undead almost on top of Mercy. She watched with wide eyes, knowing she would not be able to get to the other girl in time and hoped she had really good reflexes.

Strange knocking sounds got her attention. In the middle of the store there were at least five undead banging against a glass display cabinet. The kinds that had sliding glass doors on the sides the clerks stood. She raised her eyebrow, shocked to see a person, a real, honest to goodness person inside the case. It was a man and that was all Olivia could tell before another undead was at her side. She spun around and kicked it's feet out from under it's rotting body. It landed on the ground, sounding like a rotted pumpkin being thrown at concrete.

Olivia stabbed into his head over and over, mashing in his face, giving it no time to get off the ground.

"Mercy... there's a person in that cabinet." Olivia pointed. She wanted to save him. He looked helpless and had no weapon that she could make out. He was also fairly young. Maybe twenty. But she was just a girl. There were five undead between her and the man and Mercy was quite busy herself. Who knew what the other lady was doing now.

The man was looking through the glass at Olivia, pleading for help with his big blue expressive eyes. The glass was made not to crack very easily, but it looked like it was starting to give in.

Any minute, it could break.

If things could not be any worse, suddenly there was the sound of a bark. Olivia froze. She knew about the undead canines. They were even worse than the normal walkers and always fast, never slow. She looked around, panic taking over her features.

But it was a normal dog, sniffing around the front door of the store. It was gone before Olivia could even point it out to Mercy.

The glass on the cabinet cracked. The man inside let out a muffled cry of alarm.

Mercy

Mercy’s breath left her in a shaky exhale as the woman didn’t strike her, her voice had saved her but doomed them. She didn’t have time to feel guilty though as the shop seemed to come alive with grunts and groans as the undead roused around them. Her soft blue gaze was fixated on the woman taking in her appearance quickly as she muttered something, lowering her baton for a mere moment and pointing it at the front door.

“Front door. Go!”

The other woman’s voice was abrupt but her tone instantly made Mercy pull herself together, she nodded quickly as she turned to Olivia, her eyes automatically catching shadows moving in several places. She gripped her weapon harder watching as Olivia struck out at one of the creatures her shot missed but before Mercy could intervene the girl had dispatched the shambling corpse. She opened her mouth to say something as Olivia turned to her watching the girls eyes slide from her face and focus on something over her shoulder, the look in her eyes warning enough as Mercy spun round hammer at the ready.

She hadn’t been prepared for how close the creature was to her, the hammer smacked against the side of the creatures head as Mercy twisted away from its flailing arms, tripping it so it nose dived into the corner of the shelves between her and Olivia. As it fell to the floor she leapt forward angling the hammer slightly to her right she brought it down into the creature’s soft skull with a sickening squelch, gore spattering across her hand but away from her face. She went to pull the hammer back gasping as the handle splintered and broke away from its metal counterpart. Without time to think about it she dropped the useless piece of wood watching the young redhead finish mashing in another of the creatures faces, she frowned at the young girl as she breathed her name pointing to something to Mercy’s right, her gaze shifted to where Olivia pointed her stomach twisted painfully as she noticed the trapped man, looking at Olivia with pleading eyes, Mercy flinched as she heard a dog bark.

There was no time for this she reached for Olivia who seemed to have frozen, attempting to grip the girls arm as she didn’t seem to be moving. “Hurry” She murmured to Olivia indicating for her to move after the dark haired woman who had already begun to run to the front of the store. “Quickly” She encouraged the red head, moving along behind her. “I see him, just get out!” Mercy hissed if the young girl protested, there was a harsh undertone in her voice that had not been there before. As they moved she reached up pulling her bow over her head, trying to stay aware of her surroundings as she counted the distance between herself and the young man. Nimble fingers found an arrow from her quiver, only once they’d almost reached the ajar door did she turn pulling the string taut she inhaled before loosing an arrow at the undead around the cabinet, the short distance worked miracles, the arrow split through one of the creatures necks, severing the spinal cord on its way through only to impale in the side of another’s head.

Mercy reached for another arrow taking a step back a glass cabinet protecting her right side but unfortunately her left side was open to assault from the undead, her hands were trembling as she aimed another arrow at another of the creatures aiming for the one blocking the man’s escape from the cabinet if she could hit it...he could slide out and run for them. She was so focused on the creature by the display cabinet she didn’t see the other ambling up to her left side, she inhaled before releasing her arrow poking her elbow out just a fraction enough to avoid the string connecting with her bare arm. The arrow ran true embedding itself in the back of the head of the creature scratching at the door, now it was up to the man she couldn’t spare many more arrows, she had barely pulled another from her quiver when a groan to her left announced another creatures presence, Mercy’s eyes flicked to rest on it as it lurched towards her she would be hard pushed to avoid it without assistance.

A triplet of walkers shuffled into her path before she could reach the door. “Fuck!” She brought up her baton to meet with the closest's face. The rest of the undead in the store spilled out towards the survivors from all angles, banging against glass, knocking over useless stock, and all that groaning – the street outside would be filled with walkers and sprinters in minutes. Chris struck out with desperate force, but the triplet caged her in. A quick glance around between swings informed her the other two survivors were trapped, too.

No one could get to Tony.

Abandoning all caution, Chris cried out to her friend. “Tony!” She kicked a walker away from her and swung the baton at its companion. The metal sliced into the rotted flesh of its cheek. “Run, Tony!” There were too many for the rifle, now, and repeated strikes to one walker would only increase her vulnerability to the other two.

She wondered if she was going to be responsible for the deaths of the young girl and her older friend. Premature guilt slithered in her gut.

The ever growing noise of the herding undead had Tony pressing his face up against the front windows of the store. He leapt back at the sight of shuffling corpses. He could see one, maybe two groups swarming around something – or someone . . . But though he could hear Christina's shout, he couldn't see her. Tony was neither strong, nor fast, and he barely knew how to use the revolver in his hands; his best chance would be to run. He just couldn't bring himself to move. Christina was family.

He was spared from making a potentially stupid decision by the sound of a dog barking. He jumped farther back from the store and lifted his crowbar as if to strike, only to see the hound sniff at the front door. Its skin still clung to its body, healthy, and it smelled positively not dead.

Yet Tony still refused to move, terrified. Who owned the dog? What would they do when they found him? Christina couldn't protect him. He didn't even know if she would survive escaping the store.

Inside, Chris spun on her heel and knocked another walker to the ground with a sure strike from her baton. With speed and strength fuelled by desperation, she seized the third creature's head and twisted. It tumbled to the floor with a broken neck. Finally she'd cleared a path. She looked around to recover her bearings, and saw a stumbling corpse lurching for the archer woman.

Her hands found the rifle and fired at the creature. The bullet missed its head, but sailed through its neck; the second bullet soared into its head. She spotted the man behind the glass door, a path cleared for him, too, and slung the rifle onto her shoulder again, then retrieved her baton. With more undead making their way to the survivors, she grabbed the archer woman by the arm and made again for the exit as she scanned the store for the girl. The man would have to follow them out. Finding the girl, Chris pulled the pair with her out onto the street.

The Rottweiler went from the front entrance and did a little scoping out before returning back to Kaylah. Clearly the situation was bad and it was going to get worse though Kaylah was unaware as she slowly made her way closer to the store itself, with her weapon held tight in her hands but as she walked closer people popped out of the entrance. There she could see several people, they were alive but they were not the only ones there as it seemed the walking corpses of this world were in the store as well.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck. OK girl stay behind me and don’t bite the infected.”

She put on a brave face though one could not tell as the lower half of her face was covered with a shiny blue vial, why she was still wearing this was always question of the day. A question that never seemed to get an answer. One of the survivors had a ranged weapon while another had a melee based one. Kaylah could also see another survivor as well but this one looked much younger. She did not approach any closer as they could be just as hostile as the infected though deep down she hoped they were not, killing was not her favourite thing to do and just chopping one down was enough.

A noise came from within the store, was it from the dead or someone who was stuck within the store and could not escape. Of course at this time Kaylah’s two phobias kicked in, the infected could easily take away anyone she knew and it was even easier for her to get hurt in some way. Her eyes widened as she felt the terror wash her over, the weapon still in hand as she gripped it with both hands. She started taking a few deep breathes but it was not working at this point as she started to shiver, her dog soon began to rub itself against her to show some form of support.

It worked but was it enough as she soon took another step towards the survivors, she needed to go into that store but if it was overrun with those infected then she would have to pass. There was still a nice gap between her and the others, her weapon could just about reach them if she stuck it out to them but she didn’t. Her mind was clear but the fears were still there yet the support of her furry friend made her push to this very point. Now she needed to know if they were friendly or if they were going to be assholes or worse cannibals. Story's went round and she heard a few as she traveled pass other survivors looking for places to call home, they went in the direction she came from and so she did not join them.

“Ummmmmm, what the hell is going on, is that store full of the undead?”

She did not say that very confidently as she was still scared, her mind said run but her body said stay right here. Bruiser stood close by, it bared its teeth though not to the humans but to the undead closing in. A growl could be heard coming from her, it did what it always did when bad things came its owners way. It looked like Kaylah was not getting any new stock this time.

"Who are you?" Remy repeated the question a little more civilly, rubbing his free hand warily through his brown hair.

" I didn't want to startle you, so I took me time but making contact with you" Maria said as she looked at the weapons pointed at her now, their hands on the trigger. Maria thought that this was going to be the end for her as the two showed hostile intent. " I'm not trying to harm anyone, I'm just trying to survive like everyone else, what would you have done coming across another person?. Would you just stick your guns in a strangers face and asked questions like you are now in a threatening manner.

Maria kept her hand still out in the open

" So are you really a cop and what are you doing out here? "

My man became suspicious and he leaned close to the other woman's ear and whispered something.

Remy sighed again, not liking the odds."For crying out loud, stop smiling and waving at us like were at some high school party,"

"I'm not moving because I think that one of you will shoot me...or worst" Maria answered.

Remy finally said, getting impatient with the whole situation. "Lady, man hiding in the house, if I were you, I'd run."But before he could even think of running, several of the undead broke off from the group and were coming at him, Ash and the lady at an alarming speed. "Crap."

John watched the whole thing unfold but said nothing.

Maria wanted to make contact with this group and it didn't go off to well as they were armed and dangerous, but she didn't listen to him. John had spent alot of time in plenty of hell hole to know that most people are at their worst during times of marshal law. You can't trust anyone, well not for a while it would seem as the two reacted. John listened to the man taking about someone being behind him and wonder if he wasn't signaling the other two that he mentioned before.

When Maria saw what was coming, she broke in a run for her life not caring to get shot by either the police officer or his companion and began to flee.

John watched as everyone began to move, "snap scoping" John acquired multiple targets of opportunity and understood why Maria ran for safety. Fast movers thought John as he saw they begin to engage anything that moved and for that reason, John wasn't about to reveal his "hide" position. He would let them pass knowing that they were already on the trail for the living. knowing that the door was secured and that he didn't break cover from his hide that they would pass him by.

Maria on the other hand choose to flee away from both threats and try to find her way back to the stake truck for safety. Using break, line of sight technique, she hoped that john would know where she was going to the "rally point" as he instructed her. Maria got within sight of the stake body truck before the path was cut off by undead, surrounded and the circled left her not alot of options. The creatures advanced which made her escape impassable.

" I don't want to feel a thing, I don't want to feel a thing" She kept telling herself as she knew it was the end from her. Pulling the derringer out and placing into her mouth she made a last 360 before retiring. No sound that could be heard, just darkness.

-Somewhere during the beginning of the outbreak-

On her way to ballet class, Rena noticed that there were three traffic accidents. One of them were right near her home, one of them was at the halfway mark on her walk to class, and one of them was just a block from the building she danced in. She also noticed that it seemed eerily quiet, despite the accidents and nobody seemed to be in the cars or around. Rena figured rescue had already came and gone, but it was strange that they had not blocked off the areas where the cars crashed. There was blood and glass all over the pavement. Why hadn’t the police blocked it off? She wondered if the cleaning crew would have it cleared before her class ended.

Accidents happened, so she tried not to think on it too much, but could not help but feel sorry for the people in the cars. How many of them had died? Had they suffered any pain before dying or did their death come quickly? If there had been any casualties, she hoped they had been instant.

She could not stand the idea of pain and suffering. Rena had enough of it in her life and did not want to see it around her anymore. Even though she had been three at the time, she still vividly recalled the way her mother and father were brutally stabbed and shot by two burglars who had broken into their home. That memory would always be with her. The last thing her parents did before dying was to hide her in the closet the moment they heard someone breaking in through the front window.

The burglars had seemed surprised to find her parents home. Rena watched through the slats on the closet door as the male intruder reacted as if by instinct, grabbing a knife out of his belt and thrusting it into her father’s stomach. Her mom had looked at the closet, knowing Rena could see them, her eyes begged her to not make a sound, so she had forced herself not to cry as she watched the female burglar pull out a gun and shoot her mom once in the chest and twice in her lower stomach. By the fate of God, Rena had not been discovered as they robbed the house.

When they left, Rena left the closet and called 911 as she had been taught to do in case of emergency.

Rena shook away the old memory and walked into the dance studio. She frowned when she noticed only a handful of people had shown up. That was odd. Her classmates were all very serious about their work and almost never missed a day.
“Did you notice anything strange today?” Rena asked her dance partner. He looked over at her as he was doing his warm up stretches. She watched as he turned to face her. “I mean I’ve never seen the place so deserted and I saw 3 traffic accidents on the way, but could not find anyone around, no one blocked the areas off, either.”

“I think a lot of people are out with the flu,” he answered.
The next event was a blur to Rena. There was screaming and people were running around. She saw someone laying on the floor, gurgling up blood and someone… some person was biting her dance partner’s throat. Her first thought was really ridiculous. “Vampires.” But she did not believe in things like that.

Rena did not even remember how she got to point A to point B. One minute she was doing warm ups and the next everything was in chaos. It was as if the whole town suddenly woke up and were going crazy.

She took a deep breath and told herself to calm down.

“Remember mom and dad,” she whispered to herself. ‘I need to be calm and collected like I was during their murder. I need to keep my head.’

She dodged the person… creature that had been attacking her dance partner and started to take action. She needed to get out of here and somewhere safe. She grabbed her backpack that had all her dance supplies, water and energy food and also grabbed a pile of clothing. They weren’t hers, but their owner was now….

Rena looked over to where her partner was twitching on the floor. He was dead but starting move! How did that even make sense? She stuffed everything into her backpack, but managed to pull his jeans on over her leotards. Still wearing her pointe ballet shoes, she ran out the door.

It was like the world had turned into the set of a horror movie. People who looked dead were shambling about, making groaning noises and if they got close to someone who was not dead, they attacked. Luckily, they were really slow, so Rena was able to dodge them. She passed the maintenance shed and grabbed a shovel, just in case she needed a weapon.

“It’s just like in all the movies… but how in the world can something like this happen so fast? How long has it been going on?” She murmured to herself as she carefully walked the streets back to her home. Once she got there, Rena was not sure what her next step would be.
She hadn’t expected her adoptive parents to be home, but even so Rena felt a spark of sadness digging into her lower stomach. They were most likely gone if the outside world was any indication. Her mother had a bad limp from a skiing accident and could not even run very fast and her father was considered obese. Fate would not be on their sides. Even though they were her adoptive parents, she loved them dearly; Mona and Chase Richard had been there for her in her hardest time and helped her cope with her emotions. They were the ones who made her start learning various forms of dance. Mona had said being active was a good way to help channel her feelings. It had worked too. Of course, she was still sad, and she had nightmares all the time, but now she was making friends, dancing every chance she got and doing stuff with her life.

At least she had been. What now?

Rena looked around their two story home. All in all, it was decent. Not too fancy, but not too shabby either. She locked the doors and pushed the plush couch in front of it for added protection while she went through the living room, making sure she was really alone and there was no horrible surprises waiting for her. The living room was clear.

Squeezing the shovel in her hands, she started for the kitchen and her parents bedroom. Clear. Bathrooms. Clear. Upstairs. Her bedroom. Clear. Dance studio. Clear.

“Well, the house is clear. But how long will this last?” If those things were what she thought they were…

“I am not going to say the Z word.” She shook her head. Rena sighed. There was no doubt about it, for some reason, the dead were really coming back.

First things first, she needed to prepare. She went around the house, found her camping backpack, and put all her most needed supplies inside, including her all her ballet slippers and pointe shoes. The undead be damned, she would still be a dancer. She went to the kitchen and put in a can opener, some canned goods that could be ate cold, bottles of water, her dance energy snacks, and food that didn’t need to be in a fridge. She stuffed it until it weighed quite a lot, but being a dancer, she was really strong and was able to put it on her back, no problem.

She put on one of her dad’s old work bets; the ones he used back before he gained all his weight. In the belt, she put two flashlights, extra batteries, her dad’s old hunting knife, a larger butcher knife. With a cringe, she even added her dad’s old hunting rifle, his handgun and extra rounds of bullets. Rena hated guns, hated hunting in general, but knew that she would need to eventually use them if she wanted to survive.

And she wanted to survive!
-Several months into the outbreak, small town of Karn(Fictional) in California-

From the high vantage point in the tree, Rena could see a whole lot going on around her in the small forested town. She put a hand over her eyes and did a sweep over the little area. It was not hard to see everything because the town was almost too small to be considered a town. There was a convenience store on one side of town, next to that was a sheriff's office and what looked like a school building. On the other side of town, there was a row of houses on either side of the street. Just below her, there was a strange dressed girl, she looked like a sex toy the way the slinky blue material stuck to her body in all the right places. It was not the type of clothing for the world they were in. Rena could not judge though. She still wore her ballet pointe shoes and a pair of leotards. They were more comfortable and made it a lot easier to move around in a graceful way the undead could not match.

Across from the blue sex toy girl at the convenience store, there was a huge commotion. She could see a young man who looked frantic and what looked like three women running around the store as they were being pursued by the biters.

"Damn," Rena whispered. She looked on the other side of town, near the row of houses and witnessed as a large group of undead were closing in on a small group of alive people. Rena sucked in her break as one of the people, a Hispanic woman pulled away from the rest and got herself surrounded. When she put a gun into her mouth, Rena closed her eyes and waited for the inevitable sound of it going off.

She would jump down and help them, but knew that if she tried anything, she may just make things worse. One person was already dead and it did not look very good for the others. Rena watched as a man pulled a woman into a house, after kicking the door in. They both collided into an aging man; after that she saw no more, because the door was shut.

Rena looked back to the convenience store, watching as a lady came dragging a little girl out the front door. The child was crying about someone being inside and trapped. A dog appeared by Blue's side below Rena's tree. He was growling at an undead that had found it's way behind the girl, though the woman seemed unaware. Rena sucked in her breath, not wanting a death happen so close to her, especially when she could help, though it would put herself at risk, too.

Despite the camping backpack over her shoulders, she was still able to jump down from the tree as gracefully as a cat, landing behind Blue girl and the undead that was about to grab her. Rena grabbed her shovel that she had hidden behind the tree and slammed it on the corpse's head.

"Duck," she hissed, hitting the undead again and again, until it finally went down.

Mercy

Mercy jumped as the gun went off, flinching back against the display cabinet to her right as she did her eyes focusing on the corpse still moving towards her until the second shot pierced its skull, she backpedaled rapidly as the creature flopped forward towards her, the knuckles on the hand clutching her bow had turned white she had an arrow clasped between her other fingers. That had been too close, her blue eyes lifted from the corpse as she turned desperately seeking out Olivia when the dark haired woman from before appeared at her side, strong fingers curling into her arm and dragging her along after her as she made a beeline for the door.

Mercy didn’t resist her at all, eyes searching for Olivia as she compliantly followed the other woman pretty sure she owed her, her life. She was beyond relieved as they came across Olivia just by the door, before Mercy could reach for her the dark haired woman had grabbed her as well pulling them from the store and into the street. Once they were out of the door, Mercy gently pulled herself from the older woman’s grip darting back towards the front of the store; pulling her bow up onto her shoulder she reached for the door slamming it closed after the blue eyed man slid through the gap by the skin of his teeth, stumbling into the road. She jolted away from the door violently as one of the creatures slammed up against it. She stepped back her breathing heavy her face pale beneath the layer of dirt that clung to it. “Shit, shit, shit” She breathed lifting a trembling hand to her head lacing her fingers through her dirty blonde hair, she looked up at the dark haired woman and the two men, soft blue eyes gripped with concern as she studied them. “Thank you” She breathed, standing straight despite her quaking hands she seemed fairly calm if not prepared for the worst, her eyes slid to rest on Olivia stood next to her. “Are you ok?” She asked the redhead as her first concern. “Did anyone get hurt?” She aimed this question at the other survivors, sweeping her gaze across the 3 of them briefly.

Her hand reflexively reached for her bow as she noticed another stranger approaching them she was holding a gun and dressed in a rather peculiar blue dress, Mercy licked at her lower lip nervously a habit she knew she should abandon in this day and age as it could potentially be dangerous. Her eyebrows rose as the girl in the blue dress asked her question, she felt her eyes turn towards the store watching a dozen of the creatures pad at the glass dead eyes watching them hungrily, she shivered involuntarily. “Yes...” She answered her slowly; she had grabbed another arrow from her quiver by now and held it loosely within her bow, she jutted the tip towards the store as if to say she only had to look at the windows to answer that question.

“L-“ She had noticed the undead creature sneak up behind the girl and dog but before she could warn them, yet another survivor literally dropped in on them landing behind the blue dressed girl and taking a shovel to the imposing creatures face no sooner had she well and truly smashed its face in Mercy shuffled closer to the dark haired woman and her companion. “We need to go” She announced boldly, she didn’t know any of these people and they didn’t know her but she knew none of them were safe here. “If we stick together for a while we’ve got a better chance of getting through this” She added her voice was loud enough for all to hear but she was almost directing this at her savior (Chris)

She felt a small twinge of anxiety snake through her chest as she waited for the others response aware the glass store front would not hold the creatures at bay for long, she was worried for Tamashii...but she was holding onto the belief that her friend was ok and would find her...somehow. She looked past the two woman just ahead of her, releasing a shuddering breath as she saw what was moving down the street towards them.

Tamashii

Tamashii’s jaw tightened as she listened to the woman answer Remy’s questions, her shoulders tensed up at the exchange. She heard the woman perfectly well, in a normal situation she wouldn’t have been this aggressive when meeting strangers...but this world was different. It had changed people...Ash was a prime example, it fed her negative side caused her to embrace everything she had tried to hide away. She flinched as Remy’s voice pulled her from her thoughts, she had barely taken her eyes off of the woman across from them, listening to what he said her eyes grazed the windows of the houses to the left of them. “I know” She murmured to the man at her side. “We need to get back Remy” She whispered though there was a steely undertone to her voice, her eyebrow lifting as the woman said she wasn’t going to move in case they shot her or worse. What’s worse than being shot? “Don’t do anything stupid and I won’t shoot you, its that simple” She warned the woman about to continue when Remy beat her to it, calling out to see whether anyone was behind them and asking that they show themselves. Tamashii was inclined to agree with him they needed to get back to the house, back to Mercy and the girl. “Listen we’re not going to hurt you...we’re leaving and-“ Tamashii started to say taking a step backwards when she heard Remy exclaim she resisted the urge to look at him still pointing her hand gun at the woman.

She flinched as Remy touched her forearm pointing behind them, Tamashii saw the fear flicker across the woman’s face it was enough to make her relax her arm and turn to see what was going on. As her eyes fell on the horde of shambling corpses behind them, the air left her lungs in a gasp, she felt her head spin as panic embedded itself in her mind. “No, no, no, no” She whined. “Mercy...” Tamashii breathed despite the odds, she spun her hand gun on the creatures that begun to shuffle towards them. Refusing to believe her companion had fallen, the only sure thing in Tamashii’s broken mind was she had to get back to that house. She took aim as she moved forward, capping two of the creatures in the head both gun shots echoing around them, the fact of the matter was if Remy hadn’t practically man handled her she wasn’t sure what she would have done. “No! Remy, we have to get to her!” Tamashii hissed as she was pulled backwards wriggling despite herself. She flinched against him as another gunshot sounded nearby, falling quiet as she was dragged into a house barely registering the gentleman crouched just inside the door as it was pushed closed behind them.

“Get off of me!” She growled at Remy, pulling free of his grip she instantly shot across the room, carefully pulling a curtain back to glance across the street, her stomach twisting as she realized how many creatures had fallen in behind them since they had split up. Stupid move! Why did you do it?...She’ll be ok she would have moved Tamashii was breathing heavily by now, panic well and truly set into her mind as she danced back into the hallway, keeping her footsteps light she tucked her handgun into its holster, pulling out her knife she ran a hand into her hair hearing the tell tale thuds of the undead banging on the door they were trapped in here. “Roof access? We can move along get ahead of the horde...” She whispered to Remy, casting her eye on the man with the gun tucked off to the side in normal circumstances she would have been more wary of him pointed a weapon at him maybe, but this wasn’t the time. She stepped back into the hallway, holding her combat knife at the ready as she moved towards the stairs, carefully ascending them before either of the men could protest.

Crunch....

Crunch...

Thud...

Silently, but quickly, two tall forms moved through this town. The taller of the two casually tossing dismembered body parts or a departed human being towards whatever groups of undead were. There seemed to be a bit more suddenly. Usually, the duo didn't go into more populated areas due to the population of undead and possible terrified survivors but it would be nice to have somewhat normal food.

Human fingers were tossed off as bait for the undead, the taller form calm and calculating as he looked around. His black shaggy messy hair having specks of sticky blood and mud in it and his face dirty and his black jacket ragged and worn from conflict and age.

The shaggy golden brown haired boy looking girl followed him without complaint but frown a little as her rusty brown eyes watched. They were twins, and their names were Cat and Dog... Heh odd names really for human beings but perhaps they never really were human. Just strays surviving the world. They had been mostly roaming when the outbreak happened, and when it did, it was indeed a shocker. Cat found it amusing. A challenge that now required every human in the world to be in their shows. Fighting for survival and to be forever in fear. To be actually show their true colors.

Yes, her twin was a bit twisted some would say. Cruel. Especially when knowing he was like this before the end of the world, this just gave him more a excuse to act on them. Since now it seemed regular political law didn't apply anymore. They did not have any set destination to go, they never really did. Their soul goal was simply to survive. Continue to walk and struggle what life they did have like all living things do. Now with just a different predator.

Dog gave another sigh as the tall boyish girl's right hand clung on the back of her twins jacket from the back. Only when did Cat stop she finally focused what was going on around her. Peeking from around a corner, she saw a building that looked like a store with a handful of survivors with some disposed of undead on the ground. The brown haired twin grinned a little excitedly as she saw a actual healthy non undead dog among them. She loved animals and she almost ran out cheerfully to cuddle the canine with affection. Of course, the black hair twin's calculating cold gaze made her pause.

Cat was examining the group carefully, evaluating them. Most would have a hard time understanding what exactly he was thinking but Dog could make a good guess. More or less, this group would be too much of a bother to get involved with by means of combat. A dog was a problem for living uninfected people among a group with guns. The boy didn't seem too much of a problem. Either Cat or Dog could over power him and he seemed unskilled and a bit edgy. A nervous sort which Cat often took advantage of as his prey. There was a little girl, another sort Cat wouldn't hesitate to go for. The woman with the little girl seemed a bit scared as well, the group probably had a run in with a near death experience. Cat probably was most concerned with the dog and two of the women.

It was probably better to just ignore them and move on since it appeared this area was already pretty dangerous.

Dog's assumptions were correct since her brother turned back and started walking away, not giving a single word. Already assuming his sister knew his thoughts without wasting the energy by talking.

However, Dog couldn't help but be curious. A little girl and a dog was mostly caught her eye... Honestly... Neither her or her brother were really scared of the zombies or other survivors... But Dog was a little lonely and both of them accepted they would die sometime. They just didn't know when. Back when before the world became hell, interacting with people didn't seem all important since they were everywhere. But now humans were dying off like moths to a flame. The shorter twin wanted to feel what it was like to actually be somewhat on the same level as others. Of course, no one really was normal anymore.

So in her hesitation, Dog stayed still watching, shifting the fairly decent sized pack on her back as she stayed curiously at the group.

Cat paused as he noticed his twin pause, seeming not to notice a slow moving shambling corpse coming up behind her. Rolling his eyes a little a giving a quiet sigh like he was watching some stupid tv show, he walked over his fists clenched as he punched the undead walking corpse in the side of his head. Not hesitating his assault, he punched again and knocked the body to the ground. Quickly smashing his metal covered knuckles against the skull of the hungry corpse.

Dog blinked curiously as a thud was heard as Cat knocked down a upcoming walking corpse. His powerful fists striking again and again even after movement ceased and decomposed brain matter spilled out from the crumpled skull. Blinking a little as her brother lazily picked up a handful of the squished brain matter, squeezed it inside his fist before letting it fall and wiped his dark bloody hands on his jeans. Standing up, Cat looked at her with blank eyes but with a slightly arched eyebrow.

Sighing, Dog mouthed the words 'sorry' before slowly moving around the corner, hand up and away from the pistols at her hips as she lightly waved to the group. Shot or not, she wanted to at least speak to somewhat regular people who probably didn't start off like the people she was used to. So why not give it a try? Her brother may disapprove, but she knew he'd accept it. After all, they agreed if they were going to die, they would get to choose how. Of course she wanted to at least die in a nicer place... Maybe the ocean.. But this was fine as well.

"Um, I come in peace.. I think that is what one is suppose to say when you don't have any white flags eh?" Dog said softly but clearly in a husky boy like voice. She was used to talking and being a guy. She grew up to be one to hide her gender. The end of the world didn't seem to be a chance to change that habit, so she would continue to play the role as some pretty boy. Though she was sure her smiling joking manner would probably be odd for these terrified people.

-Olivia and Rena-

Olivia looked around them with wide eyes. She had started with just her and Mercy running off and now there was a huge group of people. She looked around, making sure they were safe for the moment. The glass doors of the store front was holding, but just barely and the undead she could see yards ahead of them did not seem to notice them. That was the only good thing about them; they were really stupid, unless you were dealing with the fast kind or the canine type. She looked at the last undead that had been killed. It had been killed by some strange girl who had been hiding up in a tree. Not only that the person the tree girl had saved was another stranger. A very odd stranger at that. What kind of clothes was she wearing?

She may be thirteen, but Olivia knew a thing or two about the world before the outbreak. This woman looked like some sort of street walker. At least her mouth covering would protect her from undead fluids. Then before she could even wrap her head around the two new people, there was two more, not to mention the guy who had been with the woman and the man they freed from in the store.

Olivia stepped closer to Mercy, putting her hand on top of hers. She felt a vibe from this new couple; they were not to be taken lightly. The man wearing metal knuckle gloves actually scared her. The one who had spoken did not seem that bad, but there was something about him as well. The only thing that was for sure was that they were related. They looked like brothers, but the smaller one had a more gentle look about his face. The larger one looked harsh, cold. His eyes were void of emotion or so it seemed.

"Uh... Mercy's right," Olivia said, not sure the new people had heard her. "We should go quickly. Those undead are going to notice us soon."

"Plus there is a horde of them over by the houses," one of the new girls added. "I'm Rena by the way." Rena pointed up at the tree. "I saw everything from up there. The street over by the houses are filled with undead, with at least 3 fast ones."

"W-what about the others....?"

"I saw a man and a woman running into a house, they collided with another man. Older guy. There was also a Hispanic girl, but she shot herself after being surrounded," Rena interrupted, having a good guess at what the little girl was going to say. "Our chances of getting back to them are really slim. That horde will be here soon and those lazy undead over there will follow them." That was how the undead worked. Something had caused the undead to come together and storm the town.

It had most likely been the gunshots from before. That was why shooting was a last resort.

"No time for pleasantries," Rena yelled, pushing on Blue and pointing down the road. The horde was a lot faster than she had expected. "Go. Go. Go." She grabbed Blue's hand out of instinct and pulled on her.

"The forest," the man from inside the store yelled. "That way," he pointed left of them away from the crazed horde. "The path is clear."

Were they escaping the frying pan only to land in fire?
