Plot

The Kingdom of Estoria has lost a great ruler; king Wildred Grandhelm, to a horrible sickness of which even the best healers could not cure. He wasn't even able to name an official successor before the disease rendered him comatose, and as such the throne would, as tradition dictates, be passed down to his eldest son or daughter. However, in an unprecedented move, 3 siblings along the line of succession passed up on the position for various reasons, leading to the young and inexperienced Aribelle Grandhelm to inherit the throne once she turned 18 in only a little more than a month after her father's passing. In this land there's only a king or a queen (rather than both at once), depending on the gender of the royal child taking the throne, so she had a whole lot of responsibility thrust onto her alone in such a short amount of time. She needed help to properly run her nation in these chaotic times...but could they all be trusted? She was admittedly a tad naive, impressionable, and unaware of the true nature of her position and the position of those around her, all qualities that would allow people with ill intentions to sneak inside her weak points and manipulate her into being a puppet for their own ambitions. These crooked individuals are not all there is to worry about. Not by a long shot. There are those who want not to manipulate her, but to kill her. Bring down the entire kingdom of Estoria with her. Watch the entire world burn.

Estoria was once a grand kingdom and has much potential to be brought out yet again, but is of this moment caught in a precarious situation that would test the abilities of even one of the greatest rulers. The dwarven empire of Durra'halma, to the southeast, has been locked with them in a long, brutal, drawn out war with no end in sight. The elves of the Ilinor Woods to the north are of unknown intentions, but are unlikely to be of much help to Estoria; if anything leaning towards siding against them unless some brilliant negotiations are employed. The diverse kingdom of Kaer, to the west, is the most powerful nation in the region and may become allies, but if they do it's likely going to be only in their own best interest. Although not (openly, at least) hostile towards Estoria, they're well known for their grabs for power, land, and influence not only in this region but across the world. Queen Aribelle must make sure not to become their puppet if she's to ask for their assistance, an all too likely possibility. There are a few other smaller kingdoms in the area, but none of much use against such a large threat as the dwarves and possibly the elves as well. Should she broaden her reach to the outside regions? Is a new, inexperienced queen such as herself even capable of such a feat?

And then there is infighting. Magic users have been persecuted for some time due to either fear, ignorance, or hatred. Although in these witch hunts there are indeed actual witches, some of which were using their special powers to harm those who had no way of defending against, that doesn't make the slaughter any more excusable. Sometimes the witch hunts were mandated by official laws, sometimes encouraged, sometimes ignored, sometimes banned, but during any of these times the witch hunts kept going, carried out by vigilantes who would kill magic users no matter what, considering themselves to be martyrs if they got caught by authorities. Queen Aribelle has banned the killing of magic users and even has some working in her court, inspiring much hatred by these groups. Public opinion of this issue is not in her favor, which is why some rulers, even with absolute power, still tended to cave in and turn a blind eye to the killings. No sense riling people up and causing a civil war for the sake of a chosen few.

The people she has working for her clearly have to work overtime to make sure things don't end in disaster...If they even have a chance to begin with.

Where We Come In

This roleplay will focus primarily within the castle's walls in the capital city of High Tower; of the politics and character interacts inside rather then focusing on the war itself. There will be some action scenes when assassins attack or in other rare circumstances, but don't expect the Queen to rush out onto some battlefield and start chopping heads any time soon. Unlike some roleplays, ending a war peacefully rather than violently has far more precedence, so a climax might very well be signing a peace treaty before everyone gets themselves killed in an epic battle that shouldn't be fought. Sometimes war is inevitable, but it's not the only solution here.

The main plot will simply be about keeping the kingdom from falling apart by forces foreign and domestic and your actions to achieve that goal as we go about our day to day lives. Unless, of course, you're playing a character who may secretly not have such noble intentions. There will be a lot of mystery involved about who is truly on what side. The ending of this roleplay is not planned out; only the beginning. That being said, everyone has the power to influence how this roleplay will proceed. Not only can your own actions tip the scales, but as mentioned in the plot you can also manipulate my character, Queen Aribelle's, actions as well. Will she turn out a majestic ruler or will you corrupt her into a tyrant? Will the kingdom of Estoria fall or will it become a thriving beacon of hope for the rest of the world? Only time will tell.

One more thing; the events of this roleplay may be grey and grey morality rather than black and white. It's recommended that nobody be truly evil, but instead have reasons for their actions, some of which highly sympathetic. Despite the Dwarven Empire being at war with us for a long time, many of them are just as tired of it as we are and had their reasons rather than all "Yeah! Let's keep killing everything for fun!" Even the witch hunters might just be scared of the witches power and wrongfully assume the witches are the evil ones out to destroy everyone.

The Races

As mentioned there are dwarves, elves, and humans; the primary three fantasy races. There may be others as well, just not having a large kingdom within the region this story takes place in. There are many faeries within Estoria and other places. Fauns have a lot of influence in Kaer. There are many more than just these examples, so if you have a race you'd like to include than just tell me about it and I'll see if I can approve them. As for mythical beasts, expect unicorns, (rare) dragons, griffons, etc.

Technology and Magic

This is a fantasy world with medieval technology. As high technology as crossbows has been invented and they can wear steal plate male if they are rich enough to afford it.

Magic is of the witch and wizard variety, chanting incantations from a book (or from memory) or using rituals such as pouring ingredients into a cauldron. There's a huge variety of spells available but most people are incapable of using any of them. Instant death or coming back to life are two spell types that are said to not exist. If they do exist than there are no documented cases. Being able to use magic is something you're born within besides rare circumstances. Everyone has mana, magical energy, but only said magic users are in tune with their mana enough to use it in their incantations of magic. If you can use magic, huge amounts of training is needed to be able to effectively cast it by way of controlling your mana. As such there is rarely young people able to cast magic, causing the stereotype that only elderly people can use magic. There are some exceptions to those especially gifted. Mana is the strongest in the youngest due to it fading with age, so exceptions might very well be quite powerful indeed.

Elves and fairies all have some form of mana control while dwarves have no documented cases that can be verified. Humans rarely have it, similar to most races. Fairies can use magic without incantations, using only their instincts, but are not very powerful in most circumstances. Magic was the cause of the so called "Great Tragedy", a story passed down for generations among the people of Estoria that has contributed to the hatred and distrust of magic by many. In the story there was a group of magic users who committed suicide by unleashing all of their magic at once, wiping out a good portion of High Tower. Indeed there is evidence of a huge blast that has been rebuilt over a long period of time.

If you wish for any magic than please inform me before using it in the IC to make sure it's fine.

Rules

1. Keep things PG-13 or less.
2. Casual and forum rules apply. This means no god modding, etc.
3. This already has a ton of interest so expect to be turned down unless you were among those who have expressed interest already. You can ask to be PM'd if a slot does become available in case a bunch of people drop out. Either that or you're free to start your own roleplay based on this and get everyone together who couldn't be in this one.
4. If you are gone for over a week than please inform us. I or someone else can manipulate your character to move the plot forward if they hold us up that long.
5. No one liners. I'm hoping for a high casual sort of thing, or just normal casual if you can't do it. Just put in effort and you'll be fine.
6. I'll be the queen so no taking that position. Everything else is pretty much fair game if it hasn't already been reserved and there isn't any room for more of that position.
7. You may have more than one character.

Name- Prince Finn Audalian of the Illinor Woods
Age- 21
Gender-Male
Race- Elf
Occupation- Prince
Appearance- Minus the dragon of course lol.
Personality-Finn is extremely smart and clever, often getting into intent discussions or verbal battles with his siblings. He's extremely loyal to those he cares about but is also bent on doing the right thing. He has a tendency to try to please anyone who reminds him of his father.

Magic- Yes. Finn's magic is limited to being able to move things without touching them. However he can't lift anything heavier than a knight in some heavy armor without getting a massive headache.
Abilities- Finn is an excellent swordfighter and an amazing marksman. He has won many tournaments in his kingdom with those skills. He's also a skilled strategist and was often called upon by his father to help him with troop movements in the recently concluded civil war between Northern and Southern Illinor Woods. Finn is also very agile and a master climber. He is often seen scaling the towers of the castle at home and anywhere else he desires to reach the top of.
Weaknesses- Finn can tend to think with his heart at times, often disregarding tradition and his reputation to do whats right. Once he sacrificed a tournament so a poor elf could win the 5,000 gold prize, even though his father had had the family's reputation riding on Finn's winning. Finn would also sacrifice himself to save a loved one even if it was a stupid decision.

History- Finn is the firstborn of King Nessimon Audalian of the Illinor Woods. Finn has lived a privileged life and was doted on by his mother, Queen Arwen, almost constantly. Finn was often neglected by his father until he was old enough to fight and prove himself, which lead to Finn having a subconcious desire to please people like his father. Finn, unlike his father, harbors no hatred for humans and often questions why they don't have diplomatic relations with Estoria. After Finn's 17th birthday King Nessimon sent him to the kingdom of Estoria to gather info on the ailing king there he met the king's oldest daughter and they began a relationship that was forced to be kept a secret lest his father finds out or her kingdom, who seems to despise elves and magic users.

Name- Fidget Danger AKA "Fi"
Age- 11623
Gender- Female
Race- Fairy
Occupation- Queen's Playmate
Appearance- Like most Fairies, Fi is kinda small. Standing at an insignificant height of four (and a half!) inches, she is about the average size for a mature Fairy, although she is proud to say that her wings are exceptionally large for a Fairy's, taking an almost dragonfly-like appearance. Her skin is brown, her eyes bright green and her hair blonde. She wears her hair messily and medium-length, almost entirely hiding her elfish ears beneath its wavy length. While she rarely wears clothes, she does in fact have a fancy black dress specially made for her minuscule size and wings.
Personality- Playful and carefree, Fi is the perfect example of what a Fairy should be. She helps people when she feels like it, goes where she pleases and does whatever she wants, without much of a care for what other people want. While she's extremely innocent, even childlike, she also has a bit of a mischievous side and an "Appreciation" for sparkly or sweet-tasting things. She always means well, though, and her overall virtue makes her a being that can be trusted.

Magic- As a Fairy, Fi has no troubles producing a wide variety of magical phenomenon. She isn't as powerful as ordinary magical users, however, and don't ask her to preform any magical feat involving Iron, which drains her powers.
Abilities- Fi can read and preform basic mathematics. She also, she has an extraordinary amount of experience in all sorts of mundane things, making her a great companion for any young child. Good at playing and jokes, naturally.
Weaknesses- As her name suggests, Fi has a hard time sitting still. Her only fear is large bodies of water, since she can't swim. Oh, and standard Fairy weaknesses, such as her Iron allergy and inability to lie.

History- Nobody in the Court is exactly sure when Fi started accompanying young princesses, but she's been doing it for so long that people have stopped questioning it. Without fail, whenever a princess whom she favours arrives, she approaches them in secret and befriends them at a very young age. Past attempts to ward her off have always lead to failure, so she has been ruefully tolerated for so long that she is simply a part of castle life in Estoria.

Naturally, ever since this new Queen was first born, Fi has accompanied her. Playing together, telling eachother secrets, sneaking treats from the kitchen chefs, if you can name it Fi was probably involved. At first, her siblings and father were shocked, but upon being informed of her legend, that she was a guardian spirit of sorts that played with the castle's princesses, they quickly grew to accept her. Now, Fi still follows the Queen around even after she has graduated from being a Princess, although she shows herself less often before others.

Let's see how many people actually carry over from the interest check. I may or may not make a character depending on that.

But wait, does Fidget just fly around naked most of the time?

Name- King Alexander Gildone
Age- 24
Gender- Male
Race- Human
Occupation- King of a Kaer
Appearance-
Personality- calm collective and somewhat mysterious

Magic- no
Abilities- he is really good at strategy, and a strong fighter with a sword
Weaknesses- does not know magic, doesn't like talking about his father's stepping down from the throne.

History- Alex had a tough life growing up. His father trained him to be a King from a young age. The training was hard and strict. Alex didn't understand until he turned 21 and his father told him that he was stepping down from the throne and Alex was taking his place. The reason why his father stepped down is still only known by the royal family, which has created some rumors going around the Kingdom. This made it harder for Alex to rule, but over a few years he was able to win the people over. When the King died Alex knew that he would have to set up another treaty with the new queen, so he traveled to the kingdom to talk to the new queen about the future of trade in between the two kingdoms.

Because don't fairies have genitals? Though i suppose the nudity norm is different when you're four (and a half) inch tall.

She's hardly the image of sexual maturity, by human standards. Also, as you astutely noticed, she is only four (and a half!) inches tall. It might qualify as nudity to a dictionary, but the unlikely pervert looking for a nice shot of fairy bum would probably need to look rather closely to get a good view. And that's assuming they can catch her and hold her still long enough to actually see anything.

Name- Sonorus "Son" Carver
Age- 21
Gender- Male
Race- Human
Occupation- Queen's Adviser
Appearance-

Personality- Son often shows two characteristics. When facing those with higher authority than him, he is noticeably polite and humble; often saying praises and speaking in a low tone... However, when he faces those who are lower than him, his demeanor changes drastically. He, now, speaks in harsh and incessant words; gleefully spouting insults and grim words at those he faces. However, his position has an adviser, of course, speaks for his talents. Son is a shrewd person who, sometimes, dictates plans and/or actions which benefit him rather than the queen. By the way, Son has an immense hatred for dwarves, and will happily watch them burn.

Magic- Touch of Decay

Abilities-

Weaknesses- As mentioned, there is a great flaw in Son's ability. For one, he can only send his ability of decomposition to a SINGLE body part at a time. Which means, after draining his right hand's ability to decompose, he needs to send it to other body parts in order to defend himself. This means that multiple opponents can greatly impede Son's ability as they can strike from multiple directions while Son can only channel his ability to one body part at a time. Furthermore, Son is secretly bound by an oath, as a result of his magic, to never tell anything untrue. Should Son say anything untrue, his body will begin to decay until he corrects the untruth.

For now I'll accept characters from people not from the interest check as a tentative thing. If we don't have too many people than you will indeed be accepted once the roleplay starts up. If there does end up too many people because almost everyone shows up than even the so called accepted characters from those not in the interest check will no longer be accepted in order to make room. That is unless everyone else in the roleplay is fine with the few extra people. We'll see.

That being said, all the characters so far are accepted.

As for the fairies not wearing clothing, it seems like a mixed bag where sometimes they're depicted with and sometimes without. The glowing variety probably never, but it's hard to tell. In this world it would be up to a individual Fairy to decide. There's no social taboos against it for them but obviously some would still prefer covering themselves from the elements or wearing armor unless they used magic for said protection. Oh, and some would just like the fashion of it too.

Unless there's male fairies then they wouldn't have genitelia anyways. I'm not sure if there are male fairies, or if there are they don't seem to show themselves much.

Hey Siren, cool character. One question: does the public know he has magic? If they do, a lot of people would surely distrust him just for that.
Also, since you may not have read through the interest check, i'll let you know there'll be another malicious adviser you'll have to compete with. That is, assuming Stranger makes it to the OOC. Check out this page, 6th post from the bottom. Just so you know.

Edit: Maybe for fairies the male-to-female ratio is like 1:100, like with some animals. Or they're just born from plants or something.

Hmm...I have a funny narcoleptic fairy character I ended up not using for another roleplay. Maybe she could be in this one? I think she was a glowing fairy while these fairies have actual skin tones so I'll need to do some adjusting. The good thing about a narcoleptic character (or maybe not exactly narcoleptic but the same idea) is, if I'm too busy to play as her, she falls asleep until I get more free time. While sleeping she just hangs out in a pocket or something. She could be a scout for the army but obviously doesn't do a very good job. The human authorities don't have much power over what fairies do, who kind of consider themselves as their own fairy kingdom even though they are still a part of Estoria. Therefore they have a sort of diplomatic immunity and can get away with a whole lot. That being said, if a bunch of drunken fairies trash your inn then you may have trouble being able to sue them for damage. "Blast you cursed fairies!!!" You shout to the heavens.

I was thinking maybe fairies are born from flowerbuds.

Male Fairies are so extraordinarily rare that they might as well not exist. Fairies don't normally reproduce in the same way humans do, they just sort of occur naturally and don't go away unless killed or asked very, very sternly.

I can see the main reason Fairies don't wear clothes being, well, have you ever tried to slip tiny pants onto a Fairy in flight? It is not an easy task, so one would have to somehow convince them that wearing pants is fun, or provides them with some sort of mysterious benefit. Chances are, they're just going to protect their bodies with magic if it's cold, or too sunny, and not give a crap because they're Fairies.

Fairies occur magically rather than naturally, I would think. But as a race they completely blur the lines of everything and make it confusing to think about for everyone, so must just accept that they exist and move on.

Slipping pants on a fairy mid flight seems like a fun event in a festival, like pin the tail on the donkey. Only rather than pants I think it would be better to have it be like a medallion, anklet, etc., or simply catching them. Of course it would be close to impossible to win (without bribing the fairy) but you'd get a prize.

For more information on their magic, fairy magic is mainly powerful over time for effects like magical protection rather then short bursts of powerful magic such as fire shooting.

Name- Goliath
Age- 25
Gender- Male
Race- Mauscin. They are very human in appearance but have greater physical prowess.
Occupation- Personal guard
Appearance-
Stands at 6'7
Personality- Goliath is a person who isn't known for being aggressive despite his appearance. He is very peaceful and isn't one to try and hurt another unless it is to protect others. Many would find Goliath as a weird fellow because he is not very at holding a conversation. A lot of people often make fun of him because of his lack of social skills. Goliath is one who always speaks formally and is the kind of person who tries to make friends with everyone because he never had friends as a kid. People don't really trust Goliath but in the end, Goliath only wants the Queen's trust.

Magic- Goliath had his soul given power by a dragon giving him the ability to breathe fire and shape parts of his body into that of a dragons.
Abilities- Extended life span. Expert in hand to hand combat and with a variety of weapons ranging from swords to pole arms. Enhanced physical attributes. Can speak the language of the dragons.
Weaknesses- Goliath doesn't have any knowledge in political activities. Breathing fire for long periods of time will leave him winded. Shaping his limbs to that of a dragon for too long can leave the areas bruised or even broken if not careful.

History- Most Mauscin villages serve as caretakers for a dragon. When a time comes, a personal servant for the dragon is chosen. Goliath was only eight years old when he was chosen. Goliath of course was frightened by the decision. When the day came for him to be taken, the dragon flew down to the village and Goliath walked right up to it and was ready to leave. His time with the dragon wasn't what one would expect. The dragon gave a piece of its soul and fused it with Goliath's. After this, his training began. The dragon trained him to harness and perfect his physical prowess and his new found abilities. He learned many things from the dragon including their language. A time came where the king of great kingdom became sick and things didn't look well. The hooded figure came to the dragon and asked it to look after the soon to be new queen of the kingdom. Though the dragon could not do this personally, it sent Goliath and thus his journey into a different world began

Interesting character. Could you give a rough estimation of his physical strength? E.g. one and a half times a normal soldier's, double, triple, etc. Also his size. It seems someone called Goliath would be pretty big.

History- Rose grew up as a farmer in the outskirts of the kingdom. Her brother Rand and her had a wonderful childhood, full of happy and cheery memories. Until a neighboring rival kingdom attacked their farm when Rose was seven. They burnt their cozy home and murdered their parents. Rand escaped with Rose to a village where he left her, in the hands of a friendly and considerate old woman named Elisabeth, to join the military. There Rose embraced her gift of magic. When she lived with her parents, they kept her ability secret from everyone, including her brother Rand. The closest neighbor was four miles away, so it wasn’t difficult to keep her magic private. Elisabeth was a witch herself, except not nearly as powerful as Rose was. Elisabeth taught Rose how to control her magic and use it wisely. Rose used Elisabeth’s spell book and eventually inherited it herself. Rose also learned how to sew from Elisabeth, a talent she continues to do. When Rose was 16 years old, her brother Rand, now 23, came back for her. She returned to the kingdom and now lives with Rand. They became closer than ever. Rand found a job for Rose in the kingdom where she met princess Aribelle and instantly became friends with her. Soon after, Rose began getting visions of Aribelle being the new queen. Somehow, Rose knew she needed to protect her, so became Aribelle’s personal servant. About a year later, Rose’s vision came true and Aribelle took the throne. Rose knows that Aribelle will become a powerful queen, but whether she will be good or evil is unknown. Rose uses her secret gift to watch over the queen and protect her from evil lurking in unknown places.
