I've been interested in metal lately. I listened to a band called Harvey Milk, kind of a sludge metal type thing, really really enjoyed that. In the past have listened to a bit of Tool and SOAD. Also really like a lot of crustier punk type stuff, so anything along those lines would be good too.

Leave suggestions for god-tier albums I should listen to, and genres I may be interested in.

Vassline's pretty good imo, but metal isn't my field of expertise. I'm more of an alternative/rock kinda person.

If you're into sludge, Melvins is always a good starting point. I would also suggest The Ocean and Mastodon. I feel like you're probably more a fan of the experimental/noise aspects however, in which case I would suggest Big Black, Jesus Lizard, Helmet, and White Zombie.

Tool and SOAD share alternative metal elements, so for that I'd suggest Faith No More, Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Primus, basically anything that was popular in the early 90s.

Crust punk isn't my thing, but I could suggest melodic hardcore acts if you dig that.

Love you Smiral, you're a legend. Thank you for adding a whole 15 hours of new music to my iTunes library.

Melvins are amazing, downloaded one of their albums (Houdini).

The Ocean, downloaded Pelagial and Anthropocentric. Cool stuff.

Mastodon was okay, not really my thing. Not that I didn't like it, just not bad, but not really good either

Big Black and Jesus Lizard weren't particularly great either, passed on both of them.

Helmet is super cool, downloaded their first four albums (Aftertaste, Betty, Meantime, Strap It On).

White Zombie, really like them as well. Grabbed Astro Creep: 2000 and La Sexorcisto Devil Music Vol. 1

Skipped almost everything in the second paragraph of yours, sorry. Like those bands, just not really enough to put em' in my iTunes. That being said, I did in fact download Tool's entire studio discography.

I'd suggest Monkey3, they are a great instrumental metal focused band. Specifically go for "Birth of Venus." Gojira are great too, although I've only just gotten into them myself. just dabble a little into them.

One of my favourite bands of all time, Opeth. They are pretty fantastic. Stick with the albums Watershed, Heritage and Ghost Reveries. Plus the stoner metal era of Corrosion of Conformity. Deliverence, Wiseblood and America's Volume dealer are stellar albums. Breed 77 is a great British based Spanish/Latino Metal band. Mammal, an Australian Metal/Rock Band are also on my top list for recommending. And if you like, Karnivool is the next step. If you wanna go for something slow, heavy and dark as hell, Neurosis all the way, Honor found in Decay being my favourite album by them. If you like SOAD, I may suggest Dog Fashion Disco, Polkadot Cadaver and Knives Out! three bands that are really crazy and fun to listen to. More industrialized metal you prefer? Ministry, Rammstein, Twinzero and Pitchshifter maybe more up your ally.

Stone Sour is a good band.

Don't know if that counts as a metal band, though.

I love metal but also admit that my taste in metal I listen to day-to-day is terrible. Attempting to avoid my own bad taste, I'd recommend a few of the bands already mentioned, but would add in Alter Bridge, who I've been into recently. Bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica etc. are obvious suggestions that I'd hope you've already heard are some point. I'm gonna take a risk and throw Five Finger Death Punch in there, 'cause I love them no matter how generic they can be. Trivium and In Flames are great too.
