Savage societies replenish the pneuma by performing animal, or even human sacrifices. The primary society in this setting replenishes pneuma through sexual activity, hence the importance of frequent sexual relations. Just as the physical act of sex between a man and a woman creates the body of a new baby, so the passion produces pneuma for the creation of a soul. When no baby is created, no soul is created, thus sex between two people of the same gender is much more likely to produce pneuma. When someone is raped and impregnated a body is created, but, because there was no real passion or love, no soul was created, and thus the child is born soulless. Similarly, pregnancies aborted through the use of the wormwood herb, if the child in the womb had a soul, creates demons, who are hateful and vengeful about having been rejected and denied life.
