Night has fallen over Aerune, capital city of Veronia. The people of the city are sleeping, safe in their beds. Guardsmen patrol the streets with their lanterns. Even at night the splendor of the city can be seen. The moon casts an unearthly glow on the marble statues that line the marketplace, and the light glints of the silver tips of the cathedral's spires.

In front of one building, in one of the poorer districts, a lantern is hung. It burns a strange blue color, a signal to those looking for it.

The building itself is unassuming, it looks like an abandoned warehouse giving way into genteel dilapidation. But as the five strangers would find when they gave the signal knock at the door, and were let in by an unknown mechanism, things are not always as they seem.

The inside of the building was well adorned, lit by candles and a fireplace roaring in one wall, one could easily mistake the place for one of the more high end taverns in the city. In front of the front of the fireplace was a large table already set with food and drink. In the center of the table a note was pinned by a dagger. It Read:

I apologize for being unable to greet you myself, as urgent business has kept me at the Palace this evening. To the five of you arriving tonight: I'm aware that you've yet to be told why I've summoned you all here, and unfortunately explanations will have to wait till my arrival tomorrow. Until then, enjoy the amenities of the safe house, it is one of many placed in various locations throughout Veronia for agents needing a place to regroup. As such it has accommodation for each of you, and a fully stocked larder. Additionally, one part of the basement houses an armory and training room, and the other a small alchemy lab. Until such time as I can arrive to make more clear why I have summoned you all here to the capital, I expect you all to get along, strangers though you may be, you have all taken the same Oath as a Player.

I will be very put out if anyone is dead by the time I arrive.

Solomon walked down the street at a calm pace, it was late but he knew the guards patrol and so he was not concerned he had another 86 seconds give or take before the next patrol should be by. He'd already been searching a good half an hour for the safe house the spymaster wanted to use as a meeting place but as he scanned the rest of the way up the street the will-o'-the-wisp blue light caught his eye and he grinned. Checking upon and down the street he pulled the hood of his cloak up and crossed the street at an angle towards the light.

Solomon ascended the three dilapidated steps on the front of the building leading to the door and looked calmly left and right to make sure no one was looking before he rapped the necessary knock and the door and pushed it open with a swirl of his grey blue cloak. The interior was dim and empty. Solomon sighed and rolled his shoulders. "first in last out as usual" He ghosted over to the table where the note was pinned and scanned it. "excellent, amateurs to work with what. What is it Hawk? getting a little soft?" Solomon snagged a chunk of cheese and scanned the room noticing the bar. He traversed the space between the table and the bar smoothly and rummaged behind it for a moment before producing a bottle of a potent spirit which smelled of mint and burned viciously on the way down before he took it. A glass and the cheese over to a corner table that allowed him to see the doorway. Returning to the first table he seized upon a loaf of bread and a sausage and ferried them over to his table. After he finished his spread he glided door the stairs in the back of the room to the armory where he hung his cloak and began pulling down new equipment. He never reused gear. Too easy to get caught with it and then they knew who you were. Taking a supple black leather harness down he produced a leather padded jerkin of similar dark leather and pulled it on lacing it up before he put on the harness. Snagging a belt he added a loop to it for a sword and the pouches for his other equipment. A length of wire with wooden handles not unlike a cheese knife was added to the pile. Half a dozen knives were added to the harness. A vicious one sided hanger sword was added to the belt. Finally he slid a Kris into the left side of the belt and a poisoner’s knife into the harness and a second one into his boot.

The alchemy lab was next as he applied asp vemon to the two poisoner's blades and resheated them. Wolfsbane and nightshade he secreted in the pouches at his waist before he added solvents of several types for removing evidence. These were followed by an excellerant for destroying larger ammounts of evidence. After all of this he hunted down leader head and forged a variaty of papers for all situations which he then stuffed into his belt. Satisfied he had what he needed he returned to the food he had prepared but not before adding a set of lock picks on an after thought.

After consuming the majority of his meal Solomon produced a pipe and lit it settling in to wait for the rest.

Yet another shady meeting place. Standing outside the softly lit building, Ilario wondered whether a noble looking and clearly secure house would soon become the less predictable area for staging such a rendezvous some time in the future. Still, at least the pattern left many opportunities for hidden mechanisms and explosive contingencies. Or perhaps Hawk just decided to buy out an old tavern for the night, who knows? If he were honest, Ilario didn't much care. Hawk had informed him of another assignment and this was likely to just be a briefing.

As Ilario stepped up to the door, he pulled out a small ear trumpet from behind his cape and pressed it to the door, listening through the other end with his ear. There was no immediate noise, but he was listening not to what was on the other side of the door, but the door itself. Still listening, he knocked the coded knock clearly against the door with his free hand and scrutinised the sounds of the locking mechanism. It opened immediately and Ilario walked in, quickly hiding the trumpet away. The mechanism was... satisfactory, but he would rather change the code soon. Hopefully the engineer who constructed the thing allowed for such an action.

The inside was warm and cosy, not to mention far cleaner than the outside would suggest. Hidden decadence as always, I see, Ilario thought. It was only when the red flare of a pipe lit up the face of the shadowy figure on one end of the set dinner table that Ilario noticed he had company. It was something of a shock at first, he was so still that it was like he was a part of the furniture. After looking across the room awkwardly for a few moments, Ilario closed the door, hung up his cape, and spoke in his heavy Colameri accent, "Good evening." He then proceeded to the table and read the note. His eyes looked up from the note to the man, "We are to be colleagues then? What do you do, sir?"

Isabelle sat on a rooftop about 3/4 a kilometer away from the meeting place, absently twirling a small ring in her fingers. She'd swiped it earlier from a man who'd had a little too much to drink this afternoon. It wasn't worth much, but it was pretty, and she liked it, so she was going to keep it. Izzy held the ring up so that the faint blue glow of the signal lantern could be seen through the hole. So this was it, huh? This was the night she finally met her new companions. She sighed a bit at the thought. All of her thieving career (which, admittedly, was only a few short years so far), she'd operated alone. Working as part of a small team wouldn't be too major a change for her, but it would still be a pretty big one. She hoped they wouldn't mess her up in the future. She hoped she wouldn't, either.

Finally, the moment she'd been waiting for appeared: the small gap in the archers' patrols that would allow her to slip past. Here in the Royal City, even the rooftops were guarded day and night, so she'd had to memorize a few locations and patrols in her line of work. Slipping the ring into a small satchel she kept around her waist, she stood up and stretched. She'd only have a moment to get through this undetected, but the thrill was definitely worth the risk. She braced her left foot and waited. One... Two...

Three!

Isabelle took off, running swift and silent across the rooftops. She leapt from one to the other, taking a somewhat zig-zag path across. At three individual points, she encountered guards both around and beneath her, but just as she'd planned (and prayed, just a bit), they were looking in the opposite direction every time. Finally, with one last leap and a double front flip for style, she landed in front of the blue-lit meeting house and stuck the landing.

"Thank you, thank you!" she said quietly to no one in particular, bowing to the imaginary applause for her performance. She allowed herself the fun, but then it was time to head in. She knocked the secret knock, and the latch quickly opened, allowing her inside. She walked through what appeared to be a dark, decrepit hallway, but led to what was actually an amazingly well-constructed safehouse. Wow, she thought. Remind me to hire the architect if I can ever achieve my dream home.

Walking into the room, she was just in time to hear a man with incredibly poofy clothing asking a very, very, VERY heavily-armed man smoking a pipe, "What do you do, sir?"

"I'll go out on a very wide limb and say that he's the guy who kills people," she answered for him. She was going to die someday anyway; poking fun at a big man with the miniature arsenal at his waist was, in her opinion, a pretty bold way to go. "Yes, yes, I know what you're wondering: 'How can a little girl have discovered our hiding place?' Well, first of all, I'm actually 18. Second, believe it or not, I'm actually on this team. So, starting today and onward, we're all going to be teammates!" she said, throwing her hands up in the air excitedly. She had no idea how they were going to respond to that. She was hoping it'd be funny.

Ewin´s always liked his visits of the poorer parts of the city. He spent there a lot of time, but he could never really get used to things these districts prepared for him. The smell of sewage mixing with stench of nearby tanneries, homeless beggars calmly sleeping on the cold cobblestones, sound of lively conversation from pubs of questionable quality… A cocktail of pretty much everything Edwin hated mixed solely for a purpose of humiliation of his senses. Only thing it needed to achieve true perfection was some pompous asshole with blue blood shouting orders.
Speaking of assholes, Edwin noticed a few shady characters watching him. He grinned a little, hoping that those guys will have balls to start a fight. He wouldn´t really mind a little sparring practice to brighten up his mood. “There is no time for this…” he reminded to himself silently and sighed. Hawk had a job for him, and he didn´t want to make him wait any longer. Edwin was man of few virtues and reliability was one of them. He fastened his steps, put a hand around the hilt of his sword and hoped that thugs won´t be interested in prey that could bite back.

He get into the warehouse without any incident, thugs remained on their spot waiting on someone harmless, and soon he knocked on the door in predetermined pattern, an effort was awarded by allowance to step in.
He was quite surprised by the interior of the building. From outside it didn´t look like much, but insides of the place was quite nice. Edwin already visited a lot of these “secret meetings” held by Hawk and this looked like the most pleasant one of them. A cosy tavern was great improvement from dead end of city canalizations or hidden chamber under cheap brothel. And the food was also a change he was glad for. What wasn´t that great change, was the company. He expected Hawk to be there, not a bunch of… random individuals.
“Evening,” he greeted them and doffed his hat with faked courtesy. At first Edwin wanted to ask, what is going on, but he noticed the note pinned to the table and decided to read it first. Basically they should make themselves comfortable, get to know each other and wait for his arrival. Now he regretted that missed opportunity with street brawlers. At least there was a dinner…
He gave his company an inquisitive look. They were a strange bunch of individuals, a dark alley murderer, scholar and a rather childishly behaving girl. Edwin didn´t say anything, just poured some wine into the closest goblet and took a deep gulp. Sometimes, he missed the army.

The night was chill. The cold air stung the dark mans lungs. His eyes watered from the sight of the full moon. A bright night for danger. The silhouette of the giant man laid against the brick tiles of the streets. Their uneven lining like that of broken teeth. Kicked in multiple times yet never truly giving them selves into the harm and abuse they endured. The city was dark yet not asleep. It, a being with secrets and a dangerous attitude. It was more than the sum of its parts, the city was held aloft by a more sinister motive than to survive. It was a vicious murder that thrived on the bloodshed it spread. But despite that, it was the only place where Vestiago felt at home. The only place he felt peace within himself.

He sighed as his thoughts about where he lived assailed him. He was much to large to enjoy the vantage points of the city. He had only his minds eye to help him image the beloved place he lived in. His usually joyous nature was subdued with his thoughts and emotions. He felt sentimental tonight because of the weight it carried. it was the first night that Hawk had given him a real assignment. Call it a sixth sense, but Vestigao had a feeling that tonight his entire life would change. For better or worse. He pocketed his hands after pulling up his hood over his head. He much enjoyed the touch of shadows and darkness. It was the only place he felt no one could judge him. Within his own mind, he was perfect. And in that place, he took solace against the hurt of the world. He had seen and known so much pain. He knew both extremes too well.

Vestiago was a worldly man. During his fights, he had traveled the world twice over. When he was a champion of the underworld fighting syndicate, Vestiago had tasted what the world had to offer. He much enjoyed it. His only regret was that his bloody path was a lonely one. Vestiago breathed in deep through his nose as he made his way from the stink of the waters around him. The sad wooden planks cried and squealed under his weight. Tonight was a sentimental night, but now business called. His time to regret and change had ended. Now it was time to act and embrace the majestic hatred and dark places he was now apart of. A kings player, the title he had been gifted now needed him. It was a heavy weight to carry, but it was not enough to crush his indomitable spirit nor his body.

The night streamed past him as he made his way. People looked up at him during his passing, but none dared to offer their words to such a demon. The Red Fist, The Demon, The Butcher, all names that were tied to him. His past didn't matter anymore. Vestiago rolled his shoulders as the pale blue light came into view. The signal to enter beckoned him. Vestiago stood infront of the door with his hand held at the ready. He made sure to knock lightly as to not damage the sturdy door. He doubted he could ram it down if he tried, but a little caution never killed. He took a moment to observe the surroundings, putting them into his memory. As the door opened for him, he noticed he was not the first to arrive. He expected this as he took his time to arrive. His girth took the entire frame of the door. He blotted out the night air and shine of the moon as he took a moment to drink in the smells and sights of the room. Other now apart of his family before him. He smiled and stepped in. Letting the door close behind him as the warmth of the fire kissed his chilled face. His dark skin glistened against the light, he pulled off his hood to properly inspect every one else. He didn't mean to set an intimating aura, but it happened some times.

"Good. I will not be starting the night alone! Nice to meet you all. I am Vestiago! Let us all be friends!"

Vestiago gave a big hearty laugh and relaxed slightly. His deep booming voice commanded attention of the room. He smiled genuinely and grabbed a cup and filled it himself. Vestiago then seated himself along the table with food and drank deep from his cup of tinted liquid. The burning spirit cleansed him of doubt and filled him with a warm vigor. He then looked at the others and smiled, memorizing each of them individually. Hawk was a good man, Vestiago trusted his judgement bring together a good group to represent the King in his struggles. The anxiety washed away from Vestiago as the night became more pleasant.

Before the seated man could respond, Ilario almost winced at a high voice behind him. He turned around to see a diminutive girl and creased his brow in confusion. Glancing over to the other man and finally noticing all of the glinting cutlery strapped onto his person, he could see she had a point. However, it didn't change the fact that her voice was irksome. Ilario instead walked over to the flagon of wine and poured an amount into a goblet, before carrying it to the fireplace. Addressing the girl properly, Ilario took on an arrogant tone, "I'm sure if we need to annoy the other nations out of invasion plans, then I can see we will not be understaffed."

The next player to enter the meeting place was another sufficiently armed man. This one looked stronger and had an authoritative confidence about him. Ilario returned his "Evening," and followed through with a sip and a comment. "Hawk must be assembling an army."

Just when Ilario thought the team was fully assembled and perhaps everyone could at least start exchanging names, yet another player walked in. His silhouette was intimidating enough. But when the dark skin giant walked into the light, he seemed to be difficult to not notice. "Never mind the army," Ilario said under his breath. The giant then introduced himself so jovially that the atmosphere of the room seemed to change with him. "Now is as good a time to introduce myself, I suppose." Ilario raised his voice and his goblet, "You may call be Ilario Falegname. If your brain starts to hurt from thinking too much, leave the task to me."

Isabelle stuck her tongue out at the arrogant man and simply nodded to the pipe smoker. She then took a seat at the main table, propped her feet up on it, and grabbed a sweet roll. Clearly, this food was made for nobility. She liked it. She liked it quite a bit. She noticed the note on the table but didn't bother looking at it; she figured Hawk would probably just explain everything when he finally arrived. Whenever that would be.

She sat and watched silently as two more individuals came into the tavern. First came an older-looking man that looked sufficiently armed. Not as armed as pipe-smoker over there, but pretty well armed. Next came a bigger guy who looked REALLY well armed; and by well armed, she meant his actual arms. They were huge! He was huge! She watched as the big man looked around the room and said, "Good. I will not be starting the night alone! Nice to meet you all. I am Vestiago! Let us all be friends!" He then went to sit down and have a drink. Isabelle stared at him for a moment, then glanced around at the other three. Poofy-clothes spoke next. "Now is as good a time to introduce myself, I suppose," he yelled, raising his wine glass. "You may call be Ilario Falegname. If your brain starts to hurt from thinking too much, leave the task to me."

Isabelle rolled her eyes. At least the big guy, Vestiago, seemed like fun. The rest of 'em just seemed like a bunch of stuffed-shirt nobles. Booooring. But, if they were going to be her teammates, she might as well play nice with them. Munching on another sweet roll, she gave a quick wave as Ilario finished his introduction. Then she decided to speak up. "I'm Isabelle. For those who didn't hear it, yes, I am the young, and yes, I'm meant to be here. Got the same invitation from Hawk as all of you. Cheers," she added, raising her sweet roll in place of a glass. I dunno. If you work it just right, even the stuffed-shirts can be kind of fun. Lookin' forward to seeing what this lot can do. And to proving 'em all wrong if they say I shouldn't be here. She smiled. This was going to be a fun line of work.

Solomon smiled a charmingly sadistic smile. "Dear sweet girl, I do not kill people. I silence them. I'm hurt that you would call me a killer that is such a......how do I put this? Blunt, term for me." Solomon tapped out his pipe and refilled it but did not relight it, the bitter smoke already swirled around him like the fingers of his victims clawing at him from beyond the grave. "I am a cleaner, I clean up messes. Sometime people are part of the messes that need to be cleaned up and that means that the people have to go too. Out with the trash really." The second glass of the mint smelling spirit burned a little less has he tossed it back but his throat and tongue were beginning to loose sensation. "See my job is so much more, stylish and nuanced. Who do you think cleans up the botched jobs for the king's players? Why of course me!" He stood and moved to the bar and produced a cast iron tea kettle and after disappearing into the larder he returned with a kettle full of water which he hung over the fire. "Now, I've told you all what I do and typically that on its own would be grounds for me to 'Silence' all of you but because I've been asked so kindly by our employer not to attempt such a horrible thing." Solomon dropped back into his chair put his feet up on the table producing the pipe again, contemplating it and finally relighting it "what, are you doing here? because it's quite apparent I'm here to assist and pick up the pieces of whatever job Hawk has in mind"

Hmf, such a vote of confidence this 'cleaner' is. How utterly sociable. Ilario sarcastically thought to himself, keeping his bearded chin raised as he looked over the team. Whatever assignment Hawk has planned, it obviously must involve his own intelligence and artifice, a lot of muscle, steel, quiet death... and a small girl. It was a puzzle that fascinated Ilario. Certainly such a wide set of skills had an equally wide range of applications. Ilario looked into his wine and swirled it around, finally realising power and staging yourself a quiet coup, Hawk? If that's the case, I thought better of you.

The cleaner, whom had not shared his name, asked the girl, but probably the rest of them as well what their role was in this little party. "Indeed, if we are to be working together, we might know each other's capabilities." Ilario's accent flourished with at the end of each of his sentences, "As I eluded, I will be the scholar. If you need a lockpick that can humble any lock in moments, you come to me. If you have a design for a the strongest fortress and require it's weaknesses discerned, you come to me. If you require an explosive or a weapon to exploit such possible weaknesses, come to me. If you need a poison or a drug that will exploit other weaknesses, you come to me. Finally, if your bones are sticking out of your limbs because you failed in exploiting those weaknesses, pray your wounds do not fester, then you come to me. I will of course supply this group as such according to necessity."

Edwin silently watched the first men, and a girl, as they introduced themselves. His face was the one of professional gambler, but under this mask, his mind worked at full speed. They had one piece of everything: soldier, scholar, brawler, street urchin and overly cocky sociopath. Edwin knew nothing about Hawk´s future plans nor about task he is going to give them, but with the team like this, it surely will be something on the very edge of feasibility. He couldn´t help himself not to look forward to the challenge.
The first man to describe his role in upcoming events was the self-proclaimed cleaner. He was quite a disturbing individual. He spoke more like an actor from a cheap theatre than a man skilled in shady arts, as he described himself, but Edwin was sure that behind his coxcombry was more than just a grain of truth. There was something in this man, something unsettling. Also, he couldn´t overhear the silent threat, a warning to be precise, in the last sentence he said. He will have to keep an eye on him and if he tries something, Edwin will gladly introduce him to the both of his steels.

The second man to describe his profession was the scholar. Arrogance in his manners was almost tangible. He reminded him one soldier in his old unit. He was awfully educated man, behaving like someone who swallowed all the knowledge of the world. He was forced to serve because of a foul he did in the past and servitude in army was the only way he could atone for his sins. Edwin had never met a more annoying man or worse soldier in his whole life, he was even forced to whip him once hoping it will make him grow a backbone. It failed. The man died in upcoming fight, not to the sword of enemy but to hoofs of his own horse. Fool.
Edwin hoped that this man, Ilario, will be different. He said he is skilled in picking locks, healing wounds and sapping fortresses, Edwin wasn´t really sure if he believed his words, but if he truly is as capable as he says, he could be invaluable asset to the team. Hawk had always an eye for new talents and Edwin was sure that he wouldn´t pick a man without any use.
Edwin decided that he will be next one doing introduction. He stood up like a soldier on military parade, straight as a pike. He spoke to people in the tavern in same manner he used to spoke to his men. “My name is Edwin Blackwaters, former captain of His majesty cuirassiers. I use to lead an armoured fist of our king, may he rule forever, and now I do the same thing for our common employer. I know how to lead an assault of cavalry, how to siege a city… or how to gut a Skaarlund swine in dozen ways. If you have any questions in these things, you are free to ask me.”

"So," Isabelle said out loud, "we have a creepy guy who makes people disappear, Ilario Stuff-Shirt who basically knows a lot, Vestiago who I'm assuming crushes skulls with his bare hands, Captain Edwin who used to be in the military, and last but not least, me." She finished off the last bite of her sweet roll, then continued. "For those wondering, I may not look it, but I'm actually a thief. Lockpicking, breaking into places, being sneaky, that sort of thing. I can get in and out of just about anywhere. The difference is that I can do it without killing everybody," she added, giving a playful nod to Creepy Guy. "Basically, if you need stealth, infiltration, or wisecracks and one-liners, I'm your girl!"

Solomon coughed down the third drink."Creepy guy? Really? The name is Solomon Crow. Or Solomon. Or Crow. Crow is the most appropriate after all I make the dead disappear" Solomon didn't laugh, it was a tasteless joke and he'd been given the name as opposed to taking it. He stomped over to the kettle and poured a clay mug of the boiling water and added a handful of a substance from his belt to the mug. With a momentary grimace at it he picked up the mug and took a large gulp of it. "Anyway, for the record dear sweet girl. I do't kill people to get into places I get into places to kill people that know things they shouldn't." With a vicious look he slammed the mug down "And if you feel like judging me, fine. I'm good at what I do and I do it for Hawk because if not I'd have been buried in a shallow grave at a crossroads. Solomon sighed "And I will keep doing it until someone does just that. Because I was made into what I am and I'm finally being used by someone who has a semi decent motive for my services." Solomon sat back down and crossed his arms and stared down into his mug with a pensive look.

The soldier, Edwin, made it clear that he would be the expert in military matters. It made Ilario grateful not only to know that there would be a man of discipline among them, but someone who had practical experience in a subject that Ilario was severely under-read on.

Raising his nose and squinting at Isabelle in response to her comment on his attire, Ilario pondered on her skills. A thief then? Perhaps there is more merit than what your appearance and behaviour suggests.

The assassin, now introducing himself as Solomon Crow, -a name so poetically appropriate that Ilario thought it could be a stage name, let alone an alias,- caused Ilario's eyelid to twitch as he took a gulp of freshly boiling water with... something in it. The man must have a mouth of clay. You should let tea infuse, Solomon. His next actions reflected light off the details of his many knives and Ilario couldn't help but wonder what use he had for so many at once. Unless he was a collector of sorts, his only thought went to perhaps losing them all the time and requiring spares. Irresponsible, Ilario judged. He didn't much care for his tone, however. "A semi-decent motive, you say? Hmm, we will see when we are briefed, o semi-honourable Solomon." Ilario said in a matter-of-fact tone, "Now, that just leaves you," He turned his head to the giant, "Vestiago, was it? Are you to be the muscle of this team, or are you also a genius in the political sphere or..." Ilario pulled a sturgeon frown and waved his hand in a circle, trying to find another example, "... I don't know, a chef or something?"

(I'm posting as his character for now, until he gets back, as he suggested.)

Vestiago pondered Ilario's words for a moment. He held up a hand to wait, and walked into the larder. When he came back out, he was carrying an onion and a large knife, as well as a slab of granite used as a cutting board. He set the slab on one of the smaller tables in the room and set to dicing the onion. His huge hands held the knife with surprising delicacy, and he moved it with the skill of a master, in seconds the onion was minced more finely than even the head palace chef could manage.

After that was done, he brushed the chopped onion onto a platter then set the knife aside, and before anyone could blink, slammed his massive fist onto the table top. There was a sound of splintering wood as the table collapsed, also on the floor was the thick slab of polished granite, in pieces.

He said nothing, but looked pointedly at Ilario, before breaking into a broad smile.

This was a bad idea. She'd told Hawk as much when he'd proposed it to her, but he'd gone ahead and done it anyway. If they'd all had military training and were used to following orders, then it might be something that could work, but as it was only one of the team he'd picked had a distinctly military background, and that just made it worse. If they'd all been loners and miscreants, it would have been easier to make them understand each other and work together, but with just one military influence, one man used to rigid structure and the giving and receiving of orders... It was like trying to make a bowstring with a length of metal rod wrapped in sinew.

Cora stared at each arrival in turn through the small one-way mirror set behind the bar, hidden from sight and listening intently to their exchanges. She was pretty sure the "cleaner", as he'd dubbed himself, was plotting out how to make each of the others disappear if this all went south, and given the amount of weaponry he carried she was amazed he could even get out of his chair, much less walk around. He was probably trying to compensate for... other shortcomings. The only other time she'd seen a man who thought he needed that many weapons he'd been utterly useless in a fight, spending more time trying to figure out which weapon to use than he did using them. To each his own though. She was certain he was a master at one thing at least, or Hawk would not have bothered.

She smiled at the antics of the other woman, or girl, rather. She was everything that had been wrung out of Cora herself when she was still a child, full of joy and gleeful energy and comedic wit. All three were things that Cora had been unable to indulge in when she'd been growing up, so busy had she been stopping her father's plots. It was refreshing to see, though she suspected it also hid some deeper pain.

The soldier was even easier to read than the first two, and his disdain for the cleaner was evident from the start. He was a man who was used to giving orders, and having them followed without question. He also wore his sword with the air of a man who knew how to use it, unlike the cleaner he already seemed to hate and who reminded Cora of a rodent trying to puff itself up and look as threatening as possible. No, the soldier moved with the air of a predator, a man poised to strike at a moment's notice. Perhaps even a man who lusted after violence, though such a man would be dangerous to have in a group like this. She prayed it was not the case.

The dark-skinned giant of a man that strode in and introduced himself as Vestiago was fairly easy to figure out, though she didn't expect his deft strokes with the knife once he retrieved the onion, especially for a man with such large fingers. Such dexterity was almost unheard of in a man his size, and she respected the effort it must have taken for him to reach such proficiency. The loud crash as the table was smashed to the floor a moment later startled her out of her musings, but did not throw her off for long. In hindsight, she realized she should have expected such a display. a man like him would be used to using his strength, and likely wouldn't take kindly to others questioning his capabilities with it. In the world he no doubt frequented, displays of power would be far more effective than words about it.

The scholar was the only one of the group that seemed to be exactly what her first impression told her he was, with little that was hidden beneath the surface. He was a man of thoughts and words, and no doubt believed that reason and logic could solve every problem in the world. Not to say he would be wrong, but sometimes there were more efficient ways to overcome a difficulty. A clever mind could get you a long way, but you needed a capable body to cover the remaining distance. All in all, the team would have been perfect, apart from the fact that they already disliked each other and only one of them was familiar with the concept of orders.

Picking up the tray on the shelf next to her, she made her way out of the hidden room and entered the tavern proper through the service door to one side of the bar, setting the tray down and unloading the pitchers of wine it carried, then looking up to notice the others in the room. "Oh, good. You've arrived." She said, as though she hadn't been watching and listening the entire time, then smiled at the five and offered a deft curtsy. "I'm Cora. Welcome to The Hawk's Nest." Her eyes went to the note pinned to the collapsed table, and she moved to grip the handle of the dagger and pull it free. The note came with it. "Hawk won't be happy that you broke his table." She said as she plucked the note off the tip of the knife and made her way over to the fire. "Since you have all been explaining what it is you do, I should probably tell you that I am the brains." She looked pointedly at Ilario in order to quell any arguments. "Not with regards to technical aptitude, so your position is safe, but it is I who will be the final say in the field, when the instructions of Hawk himself fall short." She bent down and held the parchment close to the fire, though not so close that it would combust, clearly waiting for something as she fell silent.

As the parchment was brought close to the fire, a very strange thing began to happen. Rows of handwriting began to appear on the previously blank back side of the letter, very faint at first, but within a few seconds darkening to legibility.

The newly revealed text read thus:

Now you didn't think I'd leave all of you alone and without supervision did you? If you're reading this then my apprentice has done her job well kept an eye on you just as I instructed her to. Gathering data unseen and making observations are an integral part of the spymaster's craft, something I'm trying to teach her. What is not part of a spymaster's craft is the quip's I'm sure she made upon revealing this. Yes Cora that is something you need to learn.

In any case I'm sure you'll indulge me this little training exercise, especially seeing as by the time you'll be reading this you'll have had no choice in the matter.

I only have this else to say, I would suggest that you all get your sleep this night, because tomorrow I will be expecting your undivided attention for the mission briefing. You'll need to need to listen well because I won't have time to explain anything twice.

She smiled as she read the letter, no doubt due to some hidden meaning the others would be unable to discern, then passed the parchment on to the nearest of the five, which just happened to be Solomon in his chair. "There are rooms and beds upstairs. Try not to fight too much over who gets which ones." She moved to the bar and poured herself a drink, then took a seat at Solomon's table, waiting until he finished reading to speak. "Tell me, why do you feel it necessary to carry so many weapons? Would it not help to remain inconspicuous, rather than drawing the attention of every guard that lays his eyes on you?" She fingered the lip of her mug as she spoke, then eyed him curiously as she waited for his reply.

"Eyah!" shrieked Isabelle as the woman seemed to materialize behind her from thin air. In her panic, she accidentally fell back in her chair. She glanced up from the floor at the woman, who introduced herself as Cora. "Hawk won't be happy that you broke his table," she told Vestiago.

"I'll say it was like that when we got here if you will," Isabelle offered, still lying on her back. She was too interested in where things were going to get up right away. She was also very interested in the invisible ink trick. That would come in handy in the future; she'd have to consider asking Ilario about making her some later. She listened as Cora read the note out loud, then sighed.

"Bed, huh? I'm actually all for that," she said. She'd had a long day even before coming here... and she'd only been here a few minutes. "I'll see you guys tomorrow morning." With that, she headed upstairs. Surprisingly (and to her delight), there were enough rooms for everyone to have their own. She took the one closest to the stairs and stepped inside, locking the door behind her.

The room was actually pretty nice. There was a comfy-looking bed (with silk sheets!), a small nightstand, a table and chair in the corner, and a window overlooking the city. Overall, it was simple, but homey. She fell back on the back and sank with an audible sigh into the mattress. It was so comfortable. She might not be a real noble yet, but she was definitely living the high life. Quickly undoing her pigtails, she tucked in and closed her eyes. This was gonna be an incredible experience.

Or it would get her killed. She tried not to think about that.

Ilario flinched at Vestiago's mighty blow against the table. He blinked and was thankful that he didn't spill any of his wine. "That... I cannot refute." Ilario commented.

Out of a door beside the bar came a woman who held herself like the host of the establishment. Her sudden appearance scared Isabelle clean out of her seat. The events that followed revealed that she was somewhat in charge. The protege of Hawk himself, even. Good, with some direction they wouldn't be flailing like drunks for whatever tasks had been set. Ilario would have preferred to take orders directly from Hawk, but he had made it abundantly clear how busy he was with his own absence.

The invisible ink was a detail that Ilario had not thought to consider in this situation if he were honest. It suited a man like Hawk to use such tricks in his vocation. When the note came around, Ilario read over the hidden message. It caused him to glance up at Cora with a wariness. She was watching the entire time, wasn't she? I will have to check the room I end up in. He passed the note on, Alright Hawk, if this is to be a training exercise for your pet, then at least it has the implication of being trivial.

After Isabelle took her leave, Ilario felt the need to investigate the rest of the building before he trusted its hospitality. He had no doubt that Hawk was being as transparent as he needed to be, but if something unplanned were to occur, he did not want to be short on contingencies. "I am going to take a look around." Ilario mentioned, before turning on his heel and beginning from the basement.
