Work in progress, but I'm getting started.

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Basic information
Official name: Союз Советских Социалистических Республик/Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik
Language(s): Russian, local languages
Population: 182,321,000(1950 estimate)
Capital city: Moscow
Demonym(s): Soviet

History: What was the Russian Empire dates back centuries, although it reached its height during the 18th century. By the 20th century, wealth inequality in Russia was vast and this led to plenty of civil unrest such as the first revolution of 1905. This uprising met a bloody end, but marked the beginning of the creation of the St. Petersburg Soviet, or worker's council. This subsequently set in motion the beginning of communist protest in the Russian Empire.

Tsar Nicholas II was also an unpopular ruler, a stance that was only reinforced by Russia's entry into WW I. The war itself indirectly led to shortages, angering many people. Millions of Rubles were also printed, leading to massive inflation and higher food costs. Naturally, this led to hoarding by peasants and massive food shortages in the cities. Left-wing activists seized this opportunity and began protests for higher wages and eventually strikes by 1916. This combined with heavy war casualties continually decreased the Tsar's popularity and desires for responsible government. Other less radical groups within the newly founded Duma also shared similar concerns.

The main opposition to these less radical groups came in the form of the Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin. Initially he was unpopular, but by 1917 he set off the protests that began the Russian revolution. By October 1917, the Bolsheviks had gained further control by overthrowing the Winter Palace. This set in motion a civil war between the years 1918 and 1922, with a Red Army victory. This led to the founding of the Soviet Union and conflicting theories within the party about how to go about building socialism, most famously between Leon Trotsky and Josef Stalin. By 1924 Lenin was dead and Stalin begun his ascent into position of leader.

Stalin's theories differed from Trotsky's in that he believed socialism had to be fully developed in the Soviet Union before being exported elsewhere. This led to Stalin instigating a large scale campaign of industrialization and collectivization. Due to the forced nature of this campaign it was met with much opposition, particularly from wealthier peasants in the countryside. Those opposed led campaigns of their own that included the destruction of crops and livestock, something which resulted in mass arrests, deportations, and famine across the Soviet Union. Just a few years later, in order to fully consolidate his own power, Stalin began what is known as the Great Purge. This resulted in the exiles, deportations, and even deaths of many of his political opponents, including Trotsky.

By 1939 Stalin was becoming increasingly aware of the looming threat of Adolf Hitler in the west. This resulted in a non-agression pact between the two leaders, although it was later violated once Germany proceeded to invade Poland, and subsequently the Soviet Union in 1941. The desperation of the Soviet forces to defend their homeland led to millions of casualties, particularly during the decisive battle of Stalingrad. This battle marked a major turning point in the war and aided in allowing for the eventual final defeat of German forces in the May of 1945. The territories affected by the war were eventually split between east and west as a result of the Yalta and Potsdam conferences. Those in the east installed communist regimes, essentially marking the beginning of the Cold War.

During this post-war period tensions increasingly rose between the east and west. While both the western and eastern spheres of influence were rebuilding after the war both were simultaneously developing weaponry. This led to the Soviet Union in 1949 being the second nation of the world to successfully develop a nuclear weapon. This was a move that marked the beginning of fears of nuclear warfare that would persist for decades on both sides, disabling both superpowers from engaging in direct warfare with each other.
Politics and Government: Multiple subnational centralized republics, socialist, Marxist-Leninist state currently led by Premier Josef Stalin. The Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union decides and votes on all major decisions.
Military: The Red Army, founded in 1917 in the period after the October Revolution. It is made up of an army, an air force, and a navy. It was arguably the most decisive land force during WW II, defeating large portions of the German land forces. By 1950 the number of personnel in the Soviet military dropped to approximately 4 million from about 13 million during wartime. Soviet law also requires all able-bodied males of age to serve a minimum of 2 years. Soviet troops also maintain a presence throughout Eastern Europe.
Geography: Spanning several countries and two continent, the USSR is considered the world's largest state in its time at 22,402,200 square kilometres. Due to that it is also situated in 11 different time zones. Due to being made up of several countries, the USSR possesses a rather diverse climate, hosting an array of tundra, taiga, steppes, desert, and mountain. The European portion is considered the country's economic and cultural centre. The USSR's highest mountain is located in Tajikistan and stands at 7,495 metres. Both the largest and deepest lakes are also located within its borders(Caspian Sea and Lake Baikal respectively).
Economy: The USSR was the world's first country to adopt a planned economy, meaning production and distribution of goods is centralized and directed by the government. Due to the replacement of Lenin's NEP in the late 1920's in favour of full central planning, it led massive industrialization of the country. This aided in preparation for war while transforming a previously agrarian society into an industrial superpower, particularly after the war. For the most part the Soviet economy is self-sufficient and does most trade within the Eastern Bloc itself. During the Cold War heavy industry such as arms production became a major player in the Soviet economy, even being reliant on it; they have become the largest arms exporter to the Third World and also aid other socialist states. Basic services such as healthcare and education are state-funded.
Culture: Being a multi-ethnic state, Soviet culture is rather diverse. Art and culture are supported, although subject to censorship. Due to the Russian majority much of it also tends to have a heavily Russian influence. The Soviet Union also has a distinct art form known as "socialist realism" which has spread to other socialist states. During different periods of history attitudes towards various types of art tend to vary as well. Various religions such as Christianity and Islam, while legal, are usually discouraged due to the belief of being incompatible with Marxist ideals. This resulted in an atheistic worldview largely being promoted.
Infrastructure , science and development: The Soviet Union places great emphasis on science and technology within its economy. Much of the technological development is aided by the military, although Soviet authorities, under the direction of Lenin began developing research and development organizations which remain important in Soviet society. Soviet scientists are also among the world's best in areas such as physics, medicine, and military technology. However, due to large amounts of bureaucracy the Soviet Union remains behind in areas such as computer science. As far as transportation goes, rail networks remain the most developed. However, road networks are underdeveloped(excluding major city centres). Due to a lack of road construction and large demand for automobiles, there is growing demand for public transportation. The Soviet merchant fleet remains one of the largest in the world, however.
Analysis: The Soviet Union is the second superpower alongside the United States, thus is a major player in almost all international events. This is a position that the Union hopes to use to their advantage in order to spread the ideals of socialism, Marxism, and anti-imperialism/capitalism. This will be done through trade, negotiations, and aiding various uprisings around the world. However, further focus will continue being put on other useful areas, particularly the arms race and eventually space exploration, something the Union strives to beat the United States at.

Before I continue on my sheet I need a couple questions answered. Firstly, how far back do you need us to go on history? Secondly, what do you mean by analysis? Like what would we be including there?

Languages:Chinese; Recognized Regional Languages include Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur, Zhuang, and various others.
Capital City Beijing
Population:582,603,417
Demonym: Chinese

Historical Information
History: Chinese History goes back millennia to before the fall of the Roman Empire. The first known records of a Chinese government go back circa 12th century B.C.E. A loosely feudal society, this gave birth to the numerous Warlord Dynasties that eventually lead to the Warring States Period of the 5th-3rd Centuries B.C.E. in which Seven Kingdoms ruled over the regions of China. This period ended in 221BCE when the Qin conquered the other six Kingdoms. This lead to the rise of Imperial China and the Qin as the first Emperor. The Qin lasted for fifteen years before falling to the Han Dynasty. The Han Dynasty instituted created a cultural identity among the Chinese as it lasted from 206BCE to the 220th year of the Common Era.

Upon the fall of the Han Dynasty, numerous dynasties arose which created a solid structure for the Chinese in following ideologies such as Confucianism and Buddhism. These Dynasties rose and fell until China was conquered by the Mongols. Under the Mongol Leader Kublai Khan, the Yuan Dynasty which lasted for 100 years before falling to the Ming Dynasty which eventually lead to the Qing Dynasty.

The Qing Dynasty lasted from 1644-1912 and suffered much under European Imperialism. The First and Second Opium Wars in the 19th Century left the Chinese in a state of disrepair due to treaties forced upon them by the British. The First Sino-Japanese War also saw the loss of the Korean Peninsula and Taiwan to Japan. The Qing Dynasty underwent numerous rebellions such as the Taiping Rebellion and the Boxer Rebellion. The Qing Dynasty eventually fell to the Xinhai Revolution which lead to the founding of the Republic of China in 1911.

Yuan Shikai, an Imperial General, was elected as the first President of the Republic for his military power. Yuan Shikai however ignored the constitutions of the new Republic and eventually attempted to declare himself the new Emperor in 1915. This angered the populace and numerous Warlord states arose. In south China, Sun Yat-Ten reformed the KMT party and established a government there. It was his dream to unify China once more though this would happen after his death. During this time period, the ideas of Marxism spread throughout China which lead to the creation of the Communist Party of China in 1920.

After Sun's death in 1925, the Chiang Kai-shek became the new leader of the KMT. A more ambitious man, Chiang lead the Northern Expedition and with the help of Soviet and the Communist party of China, reunified China in 1928. The Nanjing Government was established. Chiang however held an irrational fear of the Communists and ordered a purge of this political party. Thousands died which eventually lead to the Chinese Civil War in 1927. The Communist Party and KMT party fought desperately against each other until World War II. In World War II, the two reached an uneasy truce to fight the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War.

At the end of the war, fighting between the two forces quickly resumed. With assistance from the Soviet Union, the Communist Party outmaneuvured the KMT and the two soon found themselves in a more equal fight. In 1946, Chiang Kai-shek launched a full assault on Communist held lands. Knowing their disadvantages in manpower and equipment, the CPC executed a "passive defense" strategy. They avoided the strong points of the KMT army, and were prepared to abandon territory in order to preserve their forces. In most cases, the surrounding countryside and small towns had come under Communist influence long before the cities. They also attempted to wear out the KMT forces as much as possible. This tactic seemed to be successful; after a year, the power balance became more favorable to the CPC. They wiped out 1.12 million KMT troops, while their strength grew to about 2 million men. By 1949, the CPC had conquered the majority of China. In this year, Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China with their capital in Beijing. The remaining KMT Nationalist retreated to Taiwan where they claimed to still be the sole authority of China as the Republic of China.

Initially the United States had no desire to support the KMT, however the onset of the Korean War prevented this. The United States Seventh Fleet moved to the Taiwan Strait to prevent the PR and RO from attacking one another. The United Nations supported South Korea, while the Soviet Union and People's Republic of China supported the Communistic North. Recognizing the danger of a United States backed Korea on their doorstep, Mao Zedong ordered the People's Volunteer Army to move into Korea to assist the North. During this time, China also annexed Tibet.

Politics and Government: The Peoples Republic of China is a Communistic Government lead by Mao Zedong
Military:

-Military Numbers: 4.5million
-Military Equipment: Poor
-Military Tactics: Guerilla
-Military Projection: Modernize with help from the Soviets.

Geography:China stretches some 5,026 kilometers across the East Asian landmass. China is bordered by seas and waters eastward, with the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, Taiwan Strait, and South China Sea, and bordered by landmasses on its 3 other sides, from North Korea to Vietnam. China has been officially and conveniently divided into 5 homogeneous physical macro-regions: Eastern China (subdivided into the northeast plain, north plain, and southern hills), Xinjiang-Mongolia, and the Tibetan-highlands. Its physical features are multiples. The eastern and southern half of the country, its seacoast fringed with offshore islands, is a region of fertile lowlands and foothills with most of the agricultural output and human population. The western and northern half of China is a region of sunken basins (Gobi, Taklamakan), rolling plateaus, and towering massifs, including a portion of the highest tableland on earth (Tibetan Plateau) with lower agricultural possibilities and thus, far less populated.
Economy: The years between 1949 and 1953 were a period of economic recovery for China. The Chinese had suffered greatly during the Civil War and Second Sino-Japanese War. These years were devoted to restoring stability to the economy. Despite the Korean War, this recovery succeeded. By 1952 price stability had been established, commerce had been restored, and industry and agriculture had regained their previous peak levels of production. The period of recovery had achieved its goals.
-National Currency: Renminbi
-GDP: 82,419 CN¥
-Economic Projection: Begin the Five Year Plan

Culture: The Chinese culture is one of the oldest and most complex cultures in the world. The culture of China has been influenced by China’s long history and by its diverse ethnic groups which customs and traditions could vary greatly between towns, cities and provinces. Despite all of its regional diversity, the Chinese culture is dominated by the Confucian value system. It has been the ethical and philosophical system in China since its foundation by Confucius. It is a complex system of moral, social behavior, political, philosophical and quasi-religious thought that has had tremendous influence on the culture and history of China.

Infrastructure, Science, and Development:After the establishment of the People's Republic in 1949, China reorganized its science establishment along Soviet lines. The Soviet model was characterized by a bureaucratic rather than a professional principle of organization, the separation of research from production, the establishment of a set of specialized research institutes, and a high priority on applied science and technology, which includes military technology.

The government's view of the purpose of scientific work was set forth in the September 1949 Common Program of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, which stated, "Efforts should be made to develop the natural sciences in order to serve the construction of industry, agriculture, and the national defense." On November 1, 1949, the Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded, amalgamating research institutes under the former Academia Sinica and Beijing Research Academy (the former Beijing Research Laboratory). In March 1951 the government directed the academy to determine the requirements of the production sector of the economy and to adjust scientific research to meet those requirements. Scientists were to engage in research with significant and fairly immediate benefits to society and to work as members of collectives rather than as individuals seeking personal fame and recognition.

Analysis
Going forward, Mao Zedong will wish to implement the first Five Year Plan. The Chinese Government will be focused primarily on economic growth with help from the Soviet Union. Despite this help from the Soviet Union, the Chinese will remain very wary of Foreigners and seek to grow internally as much as possible. Socialism is expected to grow exponentially in China during this time.

The Korean War is technically still going even today. It really only ended in a ceasefire rather than an actual treaty or anything. I hope that answers that question.

Well I meant the Armistice Agreement on July 27th, 1953. Was wondering if that had occurred yet or if this is at the very start of 1953. January 1st.

Well, I've got it finished. :) I'm kinda iffy on the military numbers since they are based off the numbers/info for the 1950's, but I did my best to account for the Korean War.

I've not stated more on the Korean War as I am not certain what date this is in 1953.

Syria is still standing.

Who to buy weapons from? Imperialist USA or the USSR Borg Collective? Decisions, decisions.... maybe Her Majesty's government will be looking to invest? I'm going to read up on where Syria "went wrong" IRL and see what I can do, realisticly, to turn it into a Middle Eastern power. I have a strange feeling that like many other states, a military dictator keeps the religious strife at bay, and democracy might be a bloody pathway to a theocratic tyranny. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Since the USSR only existed after 1922, your history should be focused on the period between 1922-1953, though it wouldn't hurt to go into a bit of Russian history before that.

Analysis is like a brief prediction of your nation's future directions, take a look at UK and PRC's profile, something like their analyses would be good.
