Also lets not forget this is a world where technology has advanced enough that virtual reality headsets are a widespread thing, I don't think it's too farfetched to have a virtual/artificial intelligence so advanced it appears to be/is sentient. As for the botting, you can't deny it's a facet of online life.

Actually from what I read it's both: if you log out chances are you're gonna kick the bucket, so you can't log out because of the threat of death
